CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in ease* of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horeee for the purpon of tracing and recovering them. No. 5163 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the . Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to MB. W. D. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that tho Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. tail, shoes off hind feet, and a fast trotter; also a brown cart Mare, 10 years old, 15 hands high, white face, hind legs, and feet. Supposed by a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, ruddy complexion, and cleanly shaved ; dressed in light cord jacket and trousers, and black felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, February 9. Stolen during the night of the 3rd instant, from a field at Lambourno End, the property of Mr. James Clark, farmer: a black nag Mare, in foal, aged, about 14 hands high, long mane and tail, hind fetlocks white, star on forehead, and small white spot on right of rump. Also stolen during the same night, from a shed, the pro- perty of Mr. Phillip Taylor, farmer, Stapleford Abbotts, a light spring Cart, painted black outside and white inside. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Mr. James Clarke, Lambourne, or Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex. — Bow- street, February 9. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 9tli instant, the dwelling- house of Edward Mayhew, Esq., of Tonbridge, Kent, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver Tea Spoon, marked ' E. S.' on handle, embossed; part of a silver Fork ; and £ 2 in Money. Supposed by two young men, dressed in dark clothes, one had a black round hat, the other a cap and carried a black bag. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Dance, Kent Constabulary, Tonbridge. — Bou;- street, February 14. Stoleu by means of housebreaking, ou the 4th instant, from the house of Mr. C. Debenham, farmer, Ellough : a large old- fashioned tortoiseshell Watch, maker Fras. Colman, 5 inches London; two electro- plated Dessert Spoons ; a silver Mustard whiskers Spoon, supposed to be marked ' T.' or ' D.;' a pair of Eye- glasses, silver- mouuted ; and a Purse, containing £ 2 8s. 6d. nformation to be given to the Police at Beccles, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 9. Between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. on the 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Wm. Weed, of Empingham, Rutland, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black rough a cloth Overcoat, loose made, double breasted, velvet collar, twist buttons, two pockets outside, without flaps, nearly new, . . _ had a red silk handkerchief, with shell pattern spots on it, in age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark hair, eyes, aud complexion ; the pocket, and an old- fashioned silver dump Watch, double dressed in old- fashioned cloak aud cape, and bonnet, trimmed LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen between 6 and 9 a. m. on the 14th instant, from the premises of John Frist, innkeeper, Ely Trinity, the pro- perty of a lodger: a pair of elastic- side Boots, about half worn out. By another lodger who slept in the house on the previous night; about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, brown hair and moustache ; dressed in a dark coat, striped trousers and waistcoat, and red woollen shirt; is a hawker and a native of Norwich, but often frequents races at Newmarket and other places. Information to be given to Superintendent Lantsbury, Ely, Cambridge. — Bow- street, February 16. Description of WILLIAM GARDNER JACKSON, charged on a warrant with embezzlement, at Leeds: he is from 28 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light complexion, curly and sandy hair, and slight moustache. In- formation to be given to the Chief Constable, or to Superin- tendent Hunt, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, February 16. Description of JAMES ROSIER JARVIS, a native of Doncaster, who has absconded from Worcester, charged on a warrant with embezzlement from his employer, Mr. Thomas | Southall, Town clerk : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or high, light complexion aud hair, and very small he is a good writer, writes short hand, is fond of cricket and billiards, aud will probably seek employment in a solicitor's office or endeavour to emigrate; he is accompanied by his brother who is about 20 years of age, dark hair, and is stout built. Information to be given to the Worcester City Police.— Bow- street, February 16. Stolen fr « m a dwelling- house at Liscard, Cheshire, on the 6th instant: a pair of elastic- side Boots ; a pair of women's Stockings; a calico Shirt; a white Apron ; and a woollen Shirt. By ANN CLEGG, the servant, 35 years of cases, Roman figures, has a bit chipped out of face. By two young men, tramps, one tall and slender, had on a cap, no whiskers, and the other short and stout, had ou a black felt hat ; both wore dark clothes, and one carried a carpenter's tool basket, with a piece of wire attached over his shoulder. Information to be given to Sergeant Rowland, Empingham, or to the Chief Constable, Oakham, Rutland.— Boiv- street, February 9. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of a man charged with stealing a Horse and assaulting the Police, in the parish of Debtling aud Stone, between 6 and 10 p. m. on the 9th instant : the horse has been recovered, the mau assaulted the Police, and escaped near Dartford, Kent: he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, very dark eyes, full dark whiskers ; dressed iu short dark coat, woollen cord trousers, black shiney leggings, round felt hat, and of jockeylike appearance ; he is supposed to be the man who stole the boy cob Gelding, from Cob Trees, Boxley, Kent, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 29tli November last, which has not since been heard of. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Ovenden, Kent County Constabulary, Dartford, or to Sergeant Smith, Kent County Constabulary, Head Quarters, Maidstone.— Bow- street, February 16. Stolen from a farmyard at Lavenham, on the night of the 13th instant, the property of Mr. Mumford, farmer : a chestnut cart Horse, blind of near eye, and lame of near fore foot; also a chestnut cart Mare, flaxen mane aud tail, and white mark on forehead ; both are aged, and in good working condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Schofield, Police Station, Boxford, West Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 16. I Stolen during the night of the 11th instant, from a field at Alridge, in the parish of Lambourne, the property of Edward Haimes: a chestnut Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, white spot on off side, small scar on near thigh, off hind fetlock rather weak, and iu low condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, February 14. Stolen during the night of the 27th ultimo, from Myatts Fields, Brockley- green : a red roan Horse, 7 years old, 15 hands 1 inch high, thick neck, thick black legs, small feet, black with a bunch of artificial flowers. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police, Birkenhead, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, February 16. Description of ASUTON WROE alias DASH WROE, a carter, who is charged with stealing 27i lbs. of Copper ( since recovered) from the Railway at Chadderton on the 16th ultimo : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, full face, large mouth, and light whiskers round the face; dressed in dark cloth coat, cord trousers and vest. He is in the habit of sleeping at colleries and outbuildings. Information to be given to the Superin- tendent Brindle, County Police Office, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 16, Absconded from Whinbergh on the 5th instant, charged with stealing eight bushels of Barley : JAMES FISHER, a labourer, 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, high shoulders, small whiskers, florid complexion, turus his toes out; dressed wheu last seen in beaverteen jacket, dark cord waistcoat, dirty beaverteen trousers, and high hat; supposed to be in Yorkshire. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Amis, East Dereham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 16. Absconded, charged on a warrant with larceny ( as a bailee) of a silver Watch, sunk seconds, No. 29490, maker— ' Bennett,' a gold albert Chain, gold Locket attached, and another gold Chain : FREDERICK HANCOCK, a travelling watchmaker, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, sandy whiskers, small features, has lost some of upper aud lower back teeth, and walks with a quick and shuffling gait; dressed in dark clothes and soft bowler hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Goldsmith, Taunton, or to Ser- geant Price, Wellington, Somerset.— Bow- street, February 16. Description of GEO. CORNFORTH, charged with stealing ou the 12th inst., from his lodgings, a black Jacket, Waistcoat, and pair of Trousers, a pair of strong Boots, a cloth Cap, aud 7s. in Money, the property of Mrs. Stevenson, of Ladymoor, near Bilston, Staffordshire : he is 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, stout make, bread features, thick lips, hair cut short; dressed in black cloth cap, moleskin trousers aud vest, one strong boot and one clog, and red and white muffler, or may be wearing the stoleu articles ; he is an underhand puddler, is supposed to have gone to Earls Town, Lancashire, and has a relative living at Stone- street, Manchester. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Bilston, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 16. Description of MARK BARROW, a low horse dealer, of Redlynch, in the county of Wilts, against whom a wairant has been issued, charged with having on the 8th ultimo, at Walhampton, in the parish of Boldre, did unlawfully and knowingly, by a certain false pretence, obtain of and from one Isaac Dodds, certain goods, to wit, a Horse, the property of the said Isaac Dodds, with intent to cheat and defraud him of the same : about 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, red hair, little whiskers, round full face, fresh complexion, grey eyes; dressed in light clothes, light coloured wideawake hat, check neck ties, is in the habit of attending markets and fairs in company with low horse dealers. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Lyndhurst ; or to Sergeant Brinson, Hants Constabulary', Lymington, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 14. Description of a man who sold a cow in Oswestry Smith- field, on the 7th instant, for £ 13, during the absence of the owner, and immediately afterwards absconded with the money : he is from 30 to 35 years of age, rather tall, sandy whiskers, and pockmarked; he was seen in company with several persons who came in Oswestry the same morning by train, and who had the appearance of low horse dealers. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, February 12. Stolen during the night of the 10th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mr. John Lunt, farmer, Walgherton : a light brown Overcoat, with dark velvet collar, lined with plaid, worn a little on one cuff; a grey woollen Overcoat, dark lining ; five men's white liuen Shirts ; two black and white striped Shirt3, one has a little red colour on right breast; a pair of men's cotton Drawers ; a pair of mei^ e^ Iastic- side Boots, much worn ; and several pairs of - SttKjkJkgs. By a man who had been employed as a labourer at Mr. Lunt's since the 7th instaut: about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, no whiskers, speaks with an Irish accent, has an anchor on back of one hand, and other marks on the arm ; dressed as a sailor ; he said he belonged to the ' Rescue,' now at Liverpool, as a fireman. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, February 12. Description of CROSSLEY BOTTOMLEY, late a clerk in the employ of the Littleborough Gas Company, charged with embezzling various sums of money : 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; diessed iu a brown cloth overcoat, dark cloth jacket, light tweed cloth trousers, and black billy- cock hat; he was formerly a clerk at the Railway Station, Littleborough, and is a native of that place. A reward of £ 10 will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Brindle, County Police Office, Rochdale, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension. — Bow- street, Febiuary 9. Further particulars respecting the £ 50 stolen from a cottage in the parish of Enville, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 1st ultimo : by a navvy, named GEORGE NEWINHAM, and he was seen in Stafford- street, Birming- ham, on the 16th ultimo, he is about 52 years of age, 6 feet high, black hair and whiskers, turning grey, dark complexion and eyes, small sharp chin, carries his head a little forward, aud speaks with a rough voice ; was dressed when last seen iu hard low round hat, moleskin jacket, with white buttons, blue plush velvet vest, moleskin trousers, turned up at the bottoms, and strong navvy boots. He is likely to seek employment on some railway or under some town surveyor. Information to be given to Sergeant Baldwin, Kinver, near Stourbridge, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 9. Absconded from Nottingham on the 5th instant, charged with stealing £ 4 17s. 6d. aud a Purse from her lodgings : MARY BRITTLE, a native of Matlock, 19 years of age, 5 feet high, rather stout, good- looking, light hair, fresh com- plexion, and light blue eyes ; dressed in a green check frock, black jacket and hat, trimmed with violet lace. Information to be given to Chief Constable Parry, Nottingham Borough Police.— Bow- street, February 9. Charged with stealing on the 18th ultimo, from the lobby of au hotel iu Coventry : two brown paper Parcels, belonging to a commercial traveller, containing a large quantity of Swiss Muslim aud edge Works, used for trimming ladies under clothing: THOMAS HILL HENDERSON, alias ANDERSON, a tailor, 40 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh or sallow complexion, scar on light check aud jaw, ' B. A.' on left arm ; was con- victed at Gloucester Quarter Sessions, January, 1871, for uttering counterfeit coin, at Cheltenham, and discharged from Gaol, on the 3rd January last; convicted also before the County Justices at Bath on the 11th August, 1870, and served three mouths in Shepton Mallet Gaol; also supposed to have been convicted at Southampton in January, 1870, and sen- tenced to six calendar months' imprisonment, after a previous conviction at same place : and a woman with whom he is travelling, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high ; dressed in a dark lindsey dress, black and red plaid shawl, and black hat trimmed with green ribbons. They disposed of a portion of the stolen property at Worcester, about the 28th ultimo, saying it was part of a bankrupt stock, the remainder is supposed to have been disposed of at small shops in various 9 P O L I C E GAZETTE. Absconded on the 23rd ultimo, from Crown Wharf, Creek road, Deptford, charged with embezzlment: a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, sallow com- plexion, full round face, no whiskers, and dark hair ; dressed in a long dark frieze overcoat, dark ribbed cloth trousers, and high black hat with broad brim. It is supposed he will endeavour to emigrate to America. £ 50 reward will be paid to any person who will give, to Messrs. Description of FREDERICK PRITCHARD, charged with violently assaulting aud kicking one William Evans, a water bailiff, in the employ of the Severn Fishery Board, while in the execution of his duty, on the night of the 21st of December last, at Powick, near Worcester : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, very round full face, brown hair, and slight moustache; dressed iu short dark cloth jacket, sometimes a short white slop, dark trousers, hairy cap ( imitation sealskin), and sometimes a deestalker hat. He is supposed to be accompanied by a prostitute, named ROSE Wigley, alias Silks, who is about 18 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, slight bui't, very good looking, and brown hair ; dressed in black 1 cloth jacket, black feLt iiat, trimmed with red roses aud velvet, Gatehouse, R . • • • who absconded* from Armathwaite, Cumberland, on the 1st and " moustache, dark eyes, dark brown hair, and slender figure; dressed in brown tweed coat, grey tweed trousers with black stripe down sides, and grey tweed vest, all much worn and soiled with flour, & e., black silk hat, and boots with elastic sides; carried a new black travelling rug. He may proceed to Ottawa, British North America, where he has a brother residing ; a short time ago he was in the employment of Mr. Cowbrough, wine merchant, Boar- lane, Leeds, prior to which he filled situations in Glasgow and Dublin. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, Feb. 7. Had iu his possession a pedlar's certificate, granted for the Borough of Ipswich, No. 192, which will expire on the 24th of April, 1872. Another man, whose name is unknown, is charged with aiding and abetting James Harris ( now in custody), to obtain 15s., by false pretences : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, thin face, and dark hair cut short; dressed when last seen in a blue guernsey, light mixture trousers, aud sealskin cap ; he hawks fish. Information to be given to Head Constable Mason, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for their apprehension. — Bow- street, February 12. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of a woman who is charged with obtaining goods by false preteuces from tradesmen at Middlesbrough : is about 22 years of age, 5 feet high, brown hair, thin face, pale looking, and proportionate figure. On the 2nd instant she obtained goods from two tradesmen by representing she was sister to ' Dr. Park's wife,' at that time she was dressed in a mauve- coloured dress, trimmed with black velvet, black velvet jacket, black hat trimmed with white lace, aud wore a gold hoop. She aiso attempted to obtain goods by representing she was Dr. Henderson's wife's sister ; at that time she was dressed in a blue stamped flowered dress, short black jacket, fits tight and opens behind, black hat trimmed with white lace, had a scarlet flower aud a red ribbon bow on one side, wore ear- rings in the shape of a cross, carried a brown silk umbrella, a brown muff, and wore black kid gloves.
