POLICE GAZETTE, FCG AUTFRORITE CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Properly that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Hemes far the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5160 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BUKNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Samuel Langford, of Much Wenlock, Salop, about 8 p. m. ou the 27th instant, while lying down drunk, at Coal Brook Dale : a verge Watch, German silver case, No. 868, maker Jasper Gregory, Basingstoke, and ' S. L.' scratched on the inside of case. Information to be given to Sergeant Wyley, Madeley, or to P. C. Cooper, Iron- bridge, Salop.— Bow- street, January 31. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on the 4th instant, from the house of Mr. C. Debenham, farmer, E Hough : a large old- fashioned tortoiseshell Watch, maker Fras. Colman, London ; two electro- plated Dessert Spoons ; a silver Mustard Spoon, supposed to be marked ' T.' or ' D. a pair of Eye- glasses, silver- mounted ; and a Purse, containing £ 2 8s. 6d. Information to be given to the Police at Beccles, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 9. Between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. on the 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Wm. Weed, of Empingham, Rutland, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black rough cloth Overcoat, loose made, double breasted, velvet collar, twist buttons, two pockets outside, without flaps, nearly new, had a red silk handkerchief, with shell pattern spots on it, in the pocket, and an old- fashioned silver dump Watch, double cases, Roman figures, has a bit chipped out of face. By two young men, tramps, one tall and slender, had on a cap, no whiskers, and the other short and stout, had ou a black felt hat ; both wore dark clothes, and one carried a carpenter's tool basket, with a piece of wire attached over his shoulder. Information to be given to Sergeant Rowland, Empingham, or to the Chief Constable, Oakham, Rutland.— Boic- street, February/ 9. During the night of the 1st instant, the workshop of John Morgans, shoemaker, Forden, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a light pair of watertight Boots, fore parts hard worn, brass eyelet- holes, and the seam of the left boot has been torn. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown ; or to P. C. Thomas, Montgomery.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen by means of housebreaking from the rectory of St. Brides- super- Ely, near Cardiff, between 11 a. m. aud 1 p. m. on the 28th instant : a wash- leather Bag, containing a Cheque for £ 14 6s. lid., drawn on the National Provincial Bank, Cardiff, signed William Ayres ; another for £ 7 16s., drawn on the same bank, signed C. L. Traherne ; two £ 5 Notes, of the Brecon Old Bank, old and dirty, Nos. not known ; about £ 30, chiefly in gold ; two small slate- coloured calico Bags, containing from 26s. to 30s. each, with a good many pence ; a 5- chamber Revolver, with ' George Webb, Oxford '; and a Ring, with blue aud white stones. A man dressed in ragged clothes, tall and thin, was seen passing through the village at the same time. Information to be given to Superintendent Sadler, Constabulary Office, Bridgend, Glamorganshire, S. Wales.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen during the night of the 3rd instant, from a field at Lambourne End, the property of Mr. James Clark, farmer: a black nag Mare, in foal, aged, about 14 hauds high, long mane and tail, hind fetlocks white, star on forehead, and small white spot on right of rump. Also stolen during the same night, from a shed, the pro- perty of Mr. Phillip Taylor, farmer, Stapleford Abbotts, a light spring Cart, painted black outside and white inside. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Mr. James Clarke, Lambourne, or Superiutendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex. - Bow- street, February 9. Supposed to have been stolen from a stable at Walsall during the night of the 2nd instant: a grey Mare, aged, 14 hands one inch high, lame at the fore feet, and used to cab work. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen from a field in the parish of Iffly, Oxon, on the night of the 27th ultimo, a brown Gelding, 3 years old, 14$ hands high, just broken to harness, and had a halter on, the property of Mr. William Ludlow, farmer. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, Oxford, or to Sergeant Hawton, No. 9, Charles- street, Iffly- road, Oxford. — Bow- street, February 2. Description of JOHN BURRELL, alias FREDERICK HAWKES, JOHN SMITH, WILLIAM MAYHEW, HENRY SMITH, & c., in which names lie has been convicted, in different counties, he is a native of Wymondham, aud is now charged with stealing a Pony in Wymondham, on the 15th ultimo, which he sold in Norwich : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, proportionate made, light brown hair, cut short in Yarmouth Gaol, small whiskers, meeting on the chin, fresh complexion, grey eyes, has been in the army, and is marked ' D.' on left side ; dressed in grey coat, cord trousers, black chummy hat, sometimes dressed in black cloth, & c., is of slovenly appearance ; he frequents low beer- houses, and is sometimes employed by horse dealers, or as a drover. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Barrett, Wymond- ham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— : Bow- street, February 2. BH^ Absconded on the 3rd instant, from Upper Gornal, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. KSj? S2SJ& dark brown hair, rather thin, no whiskers, blind of left eye, lias a glass one substituted, pale complexion, and pockmarked; dressed in a dark overcoat, dark trousers, and black billycock hat, he walks with a quick step, and it is supposed he will emigrate to America. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Police Office, Sedgley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street. February 7. tenced to six calendar months' imprisonment, after a previous conviction at same place : and a woman with whom he ia travelling, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high ; dressed in a dark lindsey dress, black and red plaid shawl, and black hat trimmed with green ribbons. They disposed of a portion of the stolen property at Worcester, about the 28th ultimo, saying it was part of a bankrupt stock, the remainder is supposed to have been disposed of at small shops in various towns, ( see Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo). £ 5 reward will be giveu for such information as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Norris, Coventry, warwick, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 7. Absconded on the 23rd ultimo, from Crown Wharf, Creek- road, Deptford, charged with embedment: a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, sallow com- plexion, full round face, no whiskers, and dark hair ; dressed in a long dark frieze overcoat, dark ribbed cloth trousers, and high black hat with broad brim. It is supposed he will endeavour to emigrate to America. £ 50 reward will be paid to any person who will give, to Messrs. Courtenay and Groome, solicitors, 9, Gracechurch- street, London, such infor- mation as shall lead to his apprehension.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, February 7. Description of JOHN HUME TAIT, who belongs to Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, a grocer's assistant, who absconded from Armathwaite, Cumberland, on the 1st instant, charged with embezzling £ 60, the property of the Armathwaite Co- operative Society, his employers: he is 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale face, dark brown w hiskers and moustache, dark eyes, dark brown hair, and slender figure; dressed in brown tweed coat, grey tweed trousers with black stripe down sides, and grey tweed vest, all much, worn aud soiled with flour, & c., black silk hat, and boots with elastic sides; carried a new black travelling rug. He may proceed to Ottawa, British North America, where he has a brother residing ; a short time ago he was in the employment of Mr Gowbrougb, wine merchant, Boar- lane, Leeds. prior to which he filled situations in Glasgow and Dublin. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, Feb. 7. appre- HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of the 27th ultimo, from Myatts Fields, Brockley- green : a red roan Horse, 7 years old, 15 hands 1 inch high, thick neck, thick black legs, small feet, black tad shoes off hind feet, and a fast trotter ; also a brown cart Mare, 10 years old, 15 hands high, white face, bind legs, and feet. Supposed by a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, ruddy complexion, and cleanly shaved; dressed in light cord jacket and trousers, and black felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, February 9. Description of CROSSLEY BOTTOMLEY, late a clerk iu the employ of the Littleborough Gas Company, charged with embezzling various sums of money : 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; diessed in a brown cloth overcoat, dark cloth jacket, light tweed cloth trousers, and black billy- cock hat; he was formerly a clerk at the Railway Station, Littleborough, and is a native of that place. A reward of £ 10 will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Brindle, County Police Office, Rochdale, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his hensiou. — Bow- street, February 9. Further particulars respecting the £ 30 stolen from a cottage in the parish of Enville, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 1st ultimo : by a navvy, named GEORGE NEWINHAM, and he was seen in Stafford- street, Birming- ham, on the 16th ultimo, he is about 52 years of age, 6 feet high, black hair aud whiskers, turning grey, dark complexion and eyes, small sharp chin, carries his head a little forward, ' and speaks with a rough voice ; was dressed when last seen iu hard low round hat, moleskin jacket, with white buttons, 1 blue plush velvet vest, moleskin trousers, turned up at the 1 bottoms, and strong navvy boots. He is likely to seek employment on some railway or under some town surveyor. Information to be given to Sergeant Baldwin, Kinver, near Stourbridge, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his; apprehension.— Bow- street, February 9. The youth, EDWARD GARRATT, who absconded from No. 113, Euston- road, stealing £ 250 in Bank of England Notes, aud £ 15 iu Gold ( as advertised iu Police Gazette of 22nd ultimo), has been apprehended, and £ 130 of the stolen notes recovered. He is remanded at Clerkenwell Police Court till the 13th instant.— Bow- street, February 9. Absconded from Nottingham on the 5th instant, charged with stealing £ 4 17s. 6d. aud a Purse from her lodgings : MARY BRITTLE, a native of Matlock, 19 years of age, 5 feet high, rather stout, good- looking, light hair, fresh com- plexion, aud light blue eyes ; dressed iu a green check frock, black jacket and hat, trimmed with violet lace. Information to be given to Chief Constable Parry, Nottingham Borough Police.— Bow- street, February 9. Charged with stealing on the ISth ultimo, from the lobby of an hotel in Coventry : two brown paper Parcels, belonging to a commercial traveller, containing a large quantity of Swiss Muslins and edge Works, used for trimming ladies under clothing: THOMAS HILL HENDERSON, alias ANDERSON, a tailor, 40 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh or sallow complexion, scar on right cheek and jaw, ' B. A.' on left arm ; was con- victed at Gloucester Quarter Sessions, January, 1871, for uttering counterfeit coin, at Cheltenham, and discharged from Gaol, mi the 3rd January last; convicted also before the County Justices at Bath on the 11 tli August, 1870, and served three months in Shepton Mallet Gaol; also supposed to have been convicted at Southampton in January, 1870, and sen- Stolen from a van in the Market Place in the Borough of Ashton- under- Lyne, on the 29th ultimo: a large wooden Box, containing the following property : a drab cloth Coat; a brown striped moleskin Coat; three dark woollen Shirts ; three Guernseys ; three pairs of Drawers ; six pairs of Stockings; two cotton Sheets; two Pillow Slips ; a pair of lace- up Boots, brass- eyelets; a dark leather Satchel; an opossum skin Cap ; a O- barrelled Revolver, out of repair; portion of a leopard's Skin ; about 9s. old copper Coin ; and a number of Letters and Pawntickets. By a man, who had been employed by the owner for a few days, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slender make, light complexion, glides with left eye, slightly pockpitted, he is a native of Leicester, and has the appearance of a horse keeper; dressed in a long blue coat, black cloth vest, drab woollen cord trousers, leggings, and spring- side boots, sometimes wears clogs. £ 1 reward will be paid ou his apprehension and conviction and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Borough Police Office, Town Hall, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Mr. Henshall Moss, farmer, Randlow, near Betley, in the county of Chester, between 10 p. m. on the 4th, and 7 a. m. on the 5th instant, the following property, viz. : one giey Shooting Coat and Vest, both nearly new ; one black Coat; one dark Vest; one double- breasted Vest, speckled cloth, and faded ; one pair of Watertight Boots, nearly new ; one pair of lace- up Boots, brass eyelet holes and capped ; also a pair of leather Leggings with springs. By a man of the following description, who was hired by - Vi r. Moss as a servant for the year, being quite a stranger, name unknown, but was called * DICK,' ; oid is between 45 and 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout aud stiffly made, large grey whiskers, little finger of right hand stiff; dressed iu cord trousers, and moleskin sleeved waistcoat. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire.— Boic- st., Feb. 7. Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from a house iu the parish of Meriden, a silver Watch, £ 2 5s. in Gold au : Silver, and a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, with white buttons. By a tramp- ing stableman, about 22 years of age, 5 feet high, dark com- plexion, hair, and whiskers ( meeting under chin); dressed in dark clothing and the stolen Boots. Information to be given to Superiuendent Gallaway, Aston, Birmingham, or to Inspector Boulter, Coleshill, Warwickshire.— Bou.- st., Feb. 5. Information to be given to Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham. who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of WILLIAM SMITH and ALEXANDER HIND, who have absconded, chargeil with stealing Rope from on board the barque ' Nova Scotia,' lying in the river Tyne: Smith is a sailor, between 26 and 30 years of age, light hair, sallow complexion, grey eyes, about 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionately made, long face, propoitionate nose, light whiskers, is a native of the Bull Ring, North Shields ; dressed as a sailor with Guernsey frock. Has been previously con- victed of felony. Hind is about 2S years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, cut short across forehead, no whiskers, dull looking, deaf, stoops, and is a na, tiv< j of North Shields, but of Irish parents. Stolen from a held at Davenport, on the 31st ultimo : an old black monkey Jacket, with two pockets outside and one inside left breast, a little torn at the pockets, the right one sewn up with white thread, the property of Charles Barber : by an Irishman, a tramp, about 36 years of aa; e, 5 feet 6 ins. high, broad face, and deeply pockpitted; dressed in old clothes, cap, aud an old jacket, with a patch on right elbow. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Row- bottom, Middlewich, or to Sergeant Gosling, Police Station, Astbury, Cheshire.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of GEORGE STEVENSON, charged at Bradford with embezzlement: about 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light browu hair, fair complexion, thin light whiskers, speaks rather quick, of good address, and was lately agent to the Burton Brewery Company; dressed when last seen in a grey suit, and light drab overcoat. £ 5 reward will be paid for his apprehension, on application to Chief Con- stable Granhan, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen on the 1st instant, from the dwelling- house of Sarah Troughear, Sullart- street, Cockermouth : a black Shawl with silk fringe, a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, a female's dark grey waterproof Jacket, a drab merino Dress trimmed with green, a new unmade lilac cotton Dress, a print Dress with a narrow white stripe, and a black Bonnet. By a lodger, a factory operative, a native of Ireland, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, proportionate figure ; dressed in the stolen property ; she has been traced to Whitehaven. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of HENRY MASON, of Eccleshall, Stafford- shire; charged on a warrant with stealing 3 yards of dark striped Cloth, a pair of dark striped clotli Trousers, and a black bowler Hat, from a dwelling- house at Wombridge, Salop, on the morning of the 29th ult. : he is about 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, full red face, and black hair, which he wears over left eye ; dressed in old black loose jacket, light trousers with brown stripe down the sides, and clogs. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Cox, St. George's, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Absconded from Crickhowell, since August last, charged with being the bailee of a silver Watch, and converting the same to his own use : REES PRICE, a native of Crick- howell, watchmaker, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light brown hair, inclined to curl, blue eyes, long face, fresh complexion, slightly built, hangs his head down, and generally has his hand iu his pockets ; dressed iu a suit of dark grey tweed, and black bowler " bat. He will probably call upon watchmakers to ask the price of things belonging to the trade, is fond of drink and boasting about his work. Has been regulating the clocks on the Great Western Railway about Hertford, aud was last seen at Cardiff. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Evans, Crickhowell, Brecon- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded from Cockermouth, charged on a warrant with having at Brigham on the 15th ultimo, uttered, knowing the same to be forged, a receipt for the payment of money indorsed upon a promissory note : HILTON BEATY, 38 years of age, a farmer, native of Blenerhasset, Cumberland, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long thin face, and sunkeu cheeks, grey eyes, light brown hair, slender figure, last resided at Elva Plain ; married ; supposed dressed iu a grey tweed suit. ROBERT BEATY, 28 years of age, a farmer, native of Blenerhasset, Cnmberlaud, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long thin face, and long hair, grey eyes, light brown hair, slender figure, last resided at Elva Plain; married ; supposed dressed iu a grey tweed suit. They left in company on the 27th ultimo, in csmpauy with two females, they may make for some seaport, to go to America or New Zealand ; they have a relative in London, and another at Newcastle- on- Tyne. £ 5 reward will be given for their apprehension. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Spencer, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Con- stable's Office, Carlisle.— Bom- street, February 2. Stolen from Colworth Stables, Sharnbrook, on the 24th ultimo, a silver Geneva Watch, the dial is chipped at the figure ' 8 ', and seconds hands missing, attached was a silver curb Albert, with Pencil- case ( without stone) at end ; ; dso three pairs of groom's Trousers and two Waistcoats ( recovered). By a stableman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, and is a bad walker ; dressed in grey stable suit and round billycock hat. He had a patent Clipping Machine in his possession ( stolen), by which he gets a living. Information to be given to Superintendent Carruthers, Police Station, Sharnbrook, Beds, who will pay all expenses.— Bow- street, February 2. RfAl.... on ('. « • " ' t m a house at Great Sutton, a silver lever \ i. ... i Low, Chester, No. 6336, single engine- turned case, white dial, gold ban : aud seconds, and capped, had attached a gold Albert Guard, cable pattern : by a jobbing watch aud clock cleaner, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair, slender make, and the left aukle swollen ; he stoops, and is lame ; dressed in a dark grey overcoat and coat, ai. d black cloth tiousers with patches on the knfees. He carries his tools in a black bag with strap on his shoulder. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police, Birkenhead, Cheshire.-— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded from Whitchurch, on the 29th ult., charged with stealing a Concertina, the property of Joseph Williams ; CHRISTOPHER MULLER, a German, supposed from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, small sandy whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in a dark grey Chesterfield cost, black soft quilted billycock hat, and an orange and black muffler ; he is going about the country tuning harmoniums, organs, & c., aud repairing clocks and watches ; he may be found in public- house playing a concertina and singing. He stated at the time he absconded that he was going to tune the harmonium at Macefin Church, Cheshire, also to Sandy- lane, near Malpas, Cheshire ; had with him six concertinas, several of which are stolen, also one or more watches, & c.
