NOTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct PERSONS WANTED. AUCKLAND.— 12th ultimo, on warrant for issuing a valueless cheque for £ 5 to Maurice O'Connor in payment for board and lodgings, Robert Barker, age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 8 in., native of Scotland, speaks with a Scotch accent, brown hair and moustache, stooped shoulders; generally wears dark suit and flat tweed oap. He is sup- posed to have been farming in the Woodville district about five or six years ago. AUCKLAND.— 13th February last, on warrant for failing to oomply with maintenance order for the support of his two children, John Gordon, age twenty- seven, height 6 ft., butcher, native of New Zealand, slight build, fair com- plexion and hair, blue eyes, clean- shaved ; usualh' drives a butcher's or baker's cart. On the above date tie was in arrears £ 11 10s. for each child. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, pages 345 and 508.) THAMES.— 2nd January last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £ 5 15b. fine and costs for breach of prohibition order, Thomas Bell, age twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 4 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, foreign appearance. KIHIKIHI.— Between the 13th and 21st March last, on warrant for theft of £ 3, the money of Charles Harrison, farmer, James Mason, age about thirty- five, height 6 ft. 1 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair hair and complexion, clean- shaved except fair moustache ; usually wears brownish- coloured suit and soft- felt hat. Offender received a cheque for £ 3 from complainant to give to D Cooper, of Kihikihi. Instead of delivering it he cashed the cheque and appropriated the money to his own use. THAMES.— 3rd March last, on warrant for indecent exposure, William James, age twenty- three, height 5 ft. 11 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slim build, dark complexion, brown hair and eyes ; generally wears dark- brown suit and cap. His relatives reside at the Thames. HAMILTON.— 17th ultimo, on warrant for false pre- tences on Allen McDonald, livery- stable keeper, Robert Barker, age thirty- five, height 5ft. 8in., labourer, native of Scotland, medium build, ruddy complexion, reddish moustache, thin features, speaks with a Scotch accent; respectably dressed in dark clothes. Offender obtained £ 4 from complainant by giving him a valueless cheque for that amount. WELLINGTON. — 12th Deoember last, on warrant for theft of 15s. 3d., the money of Albert Wardle, dairyman, Alfred Felix Stevens, age twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 8in., driver, native of Australia, fresh complexion, small fair moustache only, walks with a slight limp in right leg; usually dressed in blue- serge suit and skull cap. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 121.) He was employed by com- plainant, and appropriated the money to his own use. He cleared out from his work on the 19th ultimo, and on the 24th ultimo was seen on the train, and said he was going to Wanganui. WELLINGTON.— 16th November, 1908, on warrant for deserting his children, Maurice Daniel Paulmeir, age thirty- three, height 5 ft. 6J in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark hair, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair moustache; usually wears dark suit and hard hat. WELLINGTON.— 2nd instant, on warrant for theft of £ 3> the money of Frederick Bird, barman, William Thomp- son, age fifty, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., seaman and rouseabout, native of England, medium build, fair com- plexion, sharp features, prominent cheek- bones, Roman nose, round shoulders, grey hair, long grey moustache, Cockney accent; dressed in greenish- tweed suit, square- cut coat, soft shirt, and cap. [" APRIL 26 WELLINGTON.— 29th ultimo, on warrant for false pre- tences on Frederick Dobson, hotelkeeper, Cuba Stroet, R. Smith ( name supposed fictitious), age about forty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., farmer, supposed native of Scotland, respeotable appearance, stooped shoulders, light- brown hair, stubbly brown moustache, states he is travelling round with a view of purchasing a farm; dressed in grey suit and black hard hat. He gave complainant a valueless cheque for £ 2, drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Wanganui, signed " R. Smith," in payment for drinks, which was returned indorsed " No account." He left Carterton by the 11 a. m. train on the Gth instant, going in the direction of Napier. He is probably identical with Robert Barker, wanted at Auckland and Hamilton for similar offenoes. CHRISTCHURCH.— 3rd February last, on warrant for theft of £ 3, the money of Josiah William MoClintock, oycle agent, H. Allen Allen, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 0 in., clerk and canvasser; native of Scotland, fair complexion, brown hair, sandy moustache; usually dressed in brown coat and vest and grey- tweed knickers ; wears fringe of hair on forehead. A recent arrival in the Dominion. On the 10th ultimo he wrote from Wellington, giving his address as care of General Post Office. He received the above money, and failed to pay the same to complainant. CHRISTCHURCH.— 28th March last, on warrant of com- mitment to Lyttelton Prison for six months in default of finding surety in £ 100 and entering into a bond of same amount for the support of his illegitimate child, Arthur Hamilton, age about twenty, height 5 ft. 4 in., plumber's apprentice, native of New Zealand, thick- set build, broad face, sallow oomplexion, fair hair, blue eyes, bad teeth ; dressed in dark suit and hard black hat. His parents re- side in Christchurch. CHRISTCHURCH.— 4th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegiti- mate child, Joseph Johnson, age about twenty- four, height about 5ft. 8in., flax- mill hand, native of Ashley, Canterbury, New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, blaok hair, blue eyes, clean- shaved. He was last seen in Shannon about November, 1910. Complainant, Catherine Crowther. CHRISTCHURCH.— 19th ultimo, that summonses may be served on them for unlawfully betting on the Riccarton Racecourse, Charles Young, alias Springy, and Ed- ward Watson. Descriptions: First, age about twenty- three, height 5 ft. 8 in., bookmaker and spieler, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion and hair, clean- shaved, gold- filled tooth in front; generally wears blue suit and straw hat. Second, age about twenty- three, height 5 ft. 3 in., bookmaker and spieler, native of New Zealand, fair complexion and hair, clean- shaved, round face; boyish appearance; generally wears brown or blue suit and straw hat. They are supposed to have gone to Melbourne. CHRISTCHURCH.— 28th ultimo, that a distress warrant may be exeouted on him for £ 1 14s., E. Collins, age twenty- five, height about 5ft. 10in., labourer and book- maker, fairly stout build, dark- brown hair, fair moustache. CULVERDKN.— 28th ultimo, on warrant for forgery, William Frederick Leah, age twenty- five, height 5 ft. 6 in., waiter and labourer, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, grey eyes, long nose, right arm crooked ; dressed in blue suit, tan boots, and grey cap ; fond of drink. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 422.) Of- fender had been employed by the Amuri County Council, and was discharged on the 26th ultimo. On the 28th he handed Mr. Dalziel, the road- overseer, a dooument purport- ing to be signed by W. Sim, an employee of the Council, requesting him to pay L9ah £ 3 10s. out of wages due to him. Mr. Dalziel paid the money, and the signature of Sim is now declared to be a forgery. SOUTHBRIDGE. 21st ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Prison for forty- eight hours in default of paying £ 1 fine and costs for a breach of the peace, James Mil- ler, age about fifty, height 5 ft. 6 in., cook, native of Scotland, medium build, long thin features, fresh com- plexion, brown whiskers turning grey; dressed in dark- tweed suit; fond of drink. OAMARU.— 21st March last, on warrant for deserting his wife, Marjory Marion Lensey, and leaving her without means of support, Leonard James Lensey, age twenty- six, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., labourer and seaman native of America, medium build, black hair, dark com- plexion, blue eyes, clean- shaved, front upper tooth missing ; dressed in dark suit, with light ooloured" stripe, or greenish- coloured suit; wears a black- silk ribbon watch- guard with shield in centre. FRANKTON JUNCTION. — GEORGE DUNCAN'S horse has beou found close to Morrinsville with saddle- marks on it as if ridden for a distance. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 57.) GISBORNE. — WILLIAM HENNESSYS horse has been recovered. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 109.) CHUISTCHURCH.— CHARLES HENRY BERSON'S bioyole has been recovered,. ana Frederick Harwood arrested for the offence by Detective J. McLeod and Acting- Detective Sn ow, Christchurch police. PALMERSTON NORTH.— An owner is wanted by the Pal- merston North police for a gentlemen's bicycle, No. 116347, black- enamelled frame, turned- down handle- bars, green- celluloid grips, iron frame for carrying parcels behind the seat; value, about £ 6. About the 1st March last Frederick Hunter, alias Rose, sold the above bicycle for £ 2 at Foxton, and up to the present no owner can be discovered. B., native of Ireland, brown hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion, scar on left cheek. Absent from 26th ultimo. A reward of £ 1 is ofiered for the apprehension of each. MISSING. ——.•• O'O- O-:—- WELLINGTON. — Since 23rd ultimo, Basil Willis, age twenty, height 5 ft. 11 in., clerk, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, light- brown curly or wavy hair, blue eyes, clean- shaved, right leg slightly bent through a break above the ankle; dressed in dark suit and cap ; had with him a single- barrelled breech- loading gun. His friends reside at Shannon and Blenheim. He left bis home at Kbandallah, Wellington, and fears are entertained that be has committed suicide. SYDNEY— A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Alfred Reeve for deserting his wife on the 20th March, 1911. Description: Age forty- two. height 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in., book- keeper, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, clean- shaved ; usually wears dark sac- suit and hard black hat or straw hat. He may be accompanied by a woman named Laura Harper, age thirty, height 5 ft. 2 in., thin build, fair oomplexion, a shop- assistant recently employed at Mudgee. If he is located, to bo informed that unless he remits £ 1 a week for the support of his wife he will be arrested. ( See New South Wales Police Gazette, 1911, page 132.) ( 11/ 941.) TASMANIA.— Inquiry requested for Arthur Bricknell ( known as Joe Bricknell) age about thirty, height 5 ft. 7 in., native of Tasmania, miner, medium build, fair hair and complexion, heavy fair moustache only, has no roof to mouth, which causes him to speak in a peculiar manner. He was working at Globe Hill, Reefton, and left there on the 10th September last. He was formerly working at the Otira Tunnel, and at Ross, and may now be in the North Island. Inquiry by his mother, M. Mitchell, Magnet, Tasmania. ( 11/ 975.) QUEENSLAND.— Inquiry requested for Mrs. Elson anjl her three ohildren. She is described as thirty- seven years of age. One child, Carrie Fanny, sixteen years of age ; Perse George Lee, eight , and Thomas Erick Kenneth, four. She was last seen in Brisbane about the 2nd October, 1909, and as she is a good business woman, and had about £ 350 with her, may have secured a small business concern. Inquiry by her husband, George F. Elson, Maryborough, Queensland . ( 11/ 942.) AUSTRIA.— Inquiry requested by the Austro- Hungarian Consul, Auckland, for Johann Dobrez, an Austrian subject, born in 1851, at Veprinac, a sailor, who is said to have emigrated to Australia about twenty years ago. WHEREAS by Order in Council dated the twenty- third day of May, one thousand nine hundred and six, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 41, of the thirty- first day of the same month, regulations were made, infer alia, prohibiting, or prescribing a close season for, for the period of five years from the date of the gazetting of the said regulations, the taking of the fish or mammal of the species known as Risso's dolphin ( Gram- pus griseus) in the waters of Cook Strait, or of the bays, sounds, and estuaries adjacent thereto : And whereas it is desirable to extend such close season during which it shall not be lawful to take the said fish or mammal in the waters hereinbefore mentioned for a further period of three years from the date of expiration of the five years prescribed in the said regulations : Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon him by section five of the Fisheries Act, 1908, and of all powers and authorities enabling him in that behalf, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby made the following regu- lation. REGULATION. THE close season for the fish or mammal of the species known as Risso's dolphin ( Grampus griseus) in the waters of Cook Strait, or of the bays, sounds, and estuaries ad- jacent thereto, which was prescribed by the said regula- tions of the twenty- third day of May, one thousand nine hundred and six, is hereby extended for a period of three years from the thirty- first day of May, one thousand nine hunched and eleven, and during such close season it shall not be lawful for any person to take such fish in the said waters. WHEREAS by the Fisheries Act, 1908 ( hereinafter termed " the said Act"), it is, among other things, enacted that the Governor in Council may from time to time make regulations ( which shall have general force and effect throughout the Dominion, or particular force and effect only in any waters and places specified therein) for prescribing, among other things, a close season for seals, and for extending any close season so prescribed : And whereas it is further provided by the said Act that every person who, during any close season for seals, takes any seals is liable for every such offence to a penalty not exceeding five hundred pounds, and in addition thereto is liable to a further penalty not exceeding twenty pounds in respect of every seal so taken: And whereas by Order in Council dated the twenty- first clay of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety- four, the months of January, February, March, April, May. and June, one thousand eight hundred" and ninety five, were prescribed a close season for seals: And whereas by Order in Council dated the fifth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and ten, the said close season for seals was extended to the thirtieth day of June, one thousand nine hundred and eleven : And whereas it is desirable to further extend such close season: 1911.] N E W Z E A L A N D POLICE GAZETTE. 217 Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance ancl exercise of the powers conferred by the said Act, and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby make the regulation set forth in the Schedule hereto; and, with the like advice and consent, doth order that such regulation shall have force and effect throughout the Dominion of New Zealand, and in all salt, fresh, and brackish waters of the Dominion, and on all shores of such waters or any part thereof.
