Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ilr. C. .* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the ' Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As BO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the l'OLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mmt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It & requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters » nd Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, Intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Offies, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the morning of the 27th ultimo, a male Child, about 3 months old, was found in a ditch near Romford, wrapped in an old black shawl, a linen napkin, and a piece of old flannel round the feet; it was taken to the union house, where it died the next day. At the coroner's inquest the jury returned a verdict of • Manslaughter against some person or persons unknown.' A woman came by the 8' 30 p. m. train from Bishopsgate on the previous evening, and it is suspected she got out at the Forest Gate Station : she was about 30 years of age, middle height, slender make, thin face, and of gipsy- like appearance ; dressed in an old black shawl, brown dress, and dark bonnet; she had a child in her arms, which was partly naked. Information to be given to Inspector Gilpin, Police Station, Romford, Essex.— Bow- street. July 2. On the afternoon of the 29th ultimo, the body of a newly born female Childjwas found in the sea opposite Kemp Town, Brighton, wrapped in part of a coarse Towel, about J of a yard square, some pieces of black muslin, apparently the lining of a dress, a small piece of narrow purple velvet ribbon with hook and eye, supposed to be worn rouud the head, and a female's calico nightgown, a button ou the tight side of the neck, one on the left side in front, and marked ' F.' in red cotton at the bottom of the breast. At the coroner's inquest the jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.' Whoever will give such information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Brighton, as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 5 lenari.— Bow- street, July 2. A blue silk Note- case, stitched with white thread, con- taining a £ 50, two £ 10 and a £ 5 Bank of England Notes, also a Letter in an envelope, and a Cigar- case. £ 20 reward will be paid on recovery of the property, and conviction of the offender or offenders. A single- case gold lever Watch. From a carriage on Chelmsford Race Course, a brown Overcoat, brown buttons, lined with alpaca, two slits in back of lining. From the shop of Mr. Kiddell, watchmaker, Chelmsford, a gold consular lever Watch, No. 2428, maker John Walker, Princes- street, Leicester- square, inscription on inside case ' Presented by the Proprietors of the Dutch Rhenish Railway Company to Richard B Tanner, in acknowledgment of Valuable Services rendered to that Undertaking, and in commemoration of its successful completion, 18th October, 1866.' Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Pattisson, Chelmsford, Essex.— Bow- itreet, July 2. Stolen from the person of John Berridge, on the 22nd instant, a German silver Geneva Watch, with a silver Albert Guard attached. By two men : one a labourer, a native of Cornwall, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, rather stout figure ; dressed in dark brown coat and vest, dark trousers, black cap, and old boots: the other a groom, 22 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, very slight sandy whiskers, blue eyes, light brown hair, slender figure ; dressed in black cloth coat and vest, light grey trousers, large black billycock hat, and slender lace- up boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Bird, Constabulary Station, Kendal, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen from the person of Joseph Viggor, of Over, on the 26th instant, while asleep on the road near his house : a silver lever Watch, No. 7677, maker Lowe, Coventry. Information to be given to Superintendent Gwynne, Tarporley, or to Sergeant Barrow, Police Office, Over, Cheshire.— Bow- street, June 28. FORGERY. Description of GEORGE GRATTON, alias FINCH, 16, Gladstone- street, Wyvil- road, South Lambeth, London, charged on a warrant with forging a bank Cheque at Peter- borough on the 19 th instant for £ 37 10s. ( dated 17th June, 1869), on Messrs. Barnard, Barnard, and Wing, bankers, Bed- ford : from 30 to 35 years of age, 6 feet 9 or 10 inches high, Proportionate make, fresh complexion, light hair, and small light moustache ; dressed in a suit of black clothes, high crowned hat, occasionally a white waiBtcoat, and light grey coat; he is of good address, and stated he was travelling for the firm of Taylor, George, and Co., wine, brandy, and cigar importers, 24, Chapel- walk, South Castle- street, Liverpool. QBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- Stolen from the person of Robert Metcalfe, in the township of Marton- le- Moor, between 1 and 5 a. m. on the 23rd ultimo, while in a state of intoxication on his return from Borobridge Fair he had fallen down asleep by the road side ; a patent silver lever Watch, maker Taylor, Ripon, No. 60561, with a common steel Chain, Key, and Seal attached. Information to be given to Inspector Richardson, North Riding Constabulary, Wath, or to Superintendent Walmsley, Leyburn.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen from various persons at Chelmsford Races, on the 29th and 30th ultimo : A small brown Pocket- book, with strap round it, contain- ing a £ 5 Note and some betting transactions written in it, and the name ' W. W. Cooper, St. John's College, Cambridge.' A silver lever Watch, much worn, with the name of * T. J. Saltmarsh. Chelmsford,' on iDside case. A lady's gold Geneva Watch, open- face, very old. A double- case pinchbeck Watch, No. 249, very old- fashioned. BURGLARY AND MOUSE BREAKING. Between 2 and 6 p. m. on the 28th ultimo, the cottage of William Bryant, was broken open on Bromsgrove Lickey, and the following articles stolen : a silver Watch, maker Mole, Birmingham, No. 796 ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, Coat and Vest; a pair of light tweed Trousers, Coat and Vest; the property of John Palmer. Information to be given to Super- intendent Bevan, Police Station, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. — Bow- street, July 6. Between 8 a. m. and 7 p. m. on the 1st instant, two cottages were broken into in the parish of Wadhurst, Sussex, and the following property stolen therein : a very large old- fashioned silver Watch, with Roman figures, maker James Noakes, Burwash, No. 67366 ; six old- fashioned Bilver Spoons, very thin, not marked ; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, thin and twisted ; two white cotton Shirts, machine made ; a white Slop; a blacK pilot Jacket, red lining; a red silk Pocket- handkerchief; a cotton do.; a large Packing Handkerchief, orange colour ; a flannel Shirt, nearly new, has a plait in the collar behind ; and 6s. 6d in Money. A man and a woman of the following description were seen near the cottages at 10 a. m. the same day, and who are suspected : the mau is about 25 years of age, about 6 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, light hair, stout build, supposed a tramp ; the woman had on a dark dress. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes ; to Superintendent Peerles?, Uckfield ; or to any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 6. Between 8 and 12 a. m. on the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Frederick Tunks, in the parish of Maresfield, Sussex, was broken into, and a quantity of Provisions stolen therein : a man of the following description was seen to leave the house : between 20 and 30 years of age, about 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, light hair, and a few light whiskers and moustache, rather slight built, a tramp ; dressed in a snuff coloured jacket, grey and white trousers, and black billycock bat, can be identified. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 2. During the night of the 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of William Limmon, at Wooburn, Bucks, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein ; six Dinner Forks, six Dessert ditto, four Tattle Spoons, six Tea ditto, one Gravy ditto, and four Egg ditto, all plated and marked ' W. L. two silver Salt ditto, ' W. L. ;' two old silver Tea ditto, one * N. R.,' the other • R. one cricket Ball, silver- mounted, in morocco case ; three mounted meerschaum Pipes, one new and very handsome ; eight or nine old Guineas, three half ditto ; a quantity of new silver Coins, consisting a Crowns, Shillings, and Sixpences, dates from 1818 to 1820, one Spanish Dollar, one 3s. Bank of England Token, and Is. 6d. ditto. Information to be given to Superinteudent Sargent, Chipping Wycombe, Bucks.— Bow- street, July 2. Case, lined with red velvet ; and 6s. in Cash. Information to be given at the Police Station, Brentwood, Essex.— Bow- street July 2. During the night of the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. Henry Bailey, grocer and draper, at Ewhurst, was broken and entered, and stolen therein ( supposed by two tramps) : a silver tea- caddy Spoon, marked ' E. B. ;' a silver fruit Knife, mother o'- pearl handle ; four silver Thimbles, two very good, the others very much worn ; a pair of steel Scissors, very bright; and a quantity of Provisions. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes ; to Superintendent Jenner, Court House, Battle ; or to Police Constable Tobutt, Police Station, Mountfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, July 2. On the night of the 27th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. George Sbeppard, shopkeeper, of Keynsham, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : three men's Coats, one light elastic cloth, nearly new, pocket at each side, another a light grey, has been turned, pocket at each side, the other a^ blacfc" cloth'frock, about half worn ; a pair of boy's grey cloth'." Between 3 and 8 p. m. on the 26th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. E. Mason, of Windsor, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : two gold Watches, makers Jacot & Lockel; two gold Chains ; a double gold eye Glass attached to one; a gold Brooch, with likeness of a gentleman inside ; a small ditto ; a plated ditto, with hair ; a silver Thimble; six silver Spoons, marked 4 M J. F.;' two plated salt Snoons ; two ditto egg ditto ; two dessert ditto ; two table ditto ; two silver table Spoons ; a £ 5 Note ; two Sovereigns ; two guinea Pieces ; a silver butter Knife ; a ditto Knife, F^ rk, and Spoon, pearl handles, marked ' A. B. C. M.;' a pair of pfated nut Crackers ; a pair of silver Tongs ; and two silver fruit Knives. Information to be given to Superintendent Davis, Police Station, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, June 30. Between 3 and 9 p. m. on the 26th ultimo, the dwelling- douse of D. Cooper, of Windsor, was entered and the following property stolen: a black cloth frock Coat, new, maker Samuels, Ludgate Hill, on collar ; and an old- fashioned gold Brooch. Two cottages at Nutfield were entered on the 26th instant, and the following property stolen therein : two Watches, one a silver verge, with steel chaii., maker Richard Walters, the other old- fashioned silver, steel chain, two keys attached ; a pair of worsted cord Trousers, a pair of light cloth mixture ditto, a pair of dark cloth mixture with three black stripes, a grey cloth Vest, two new calico Shirts, five Pocket Handker- chiefs, and three pairs of Stockings, all marked ' G. S.' Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Holliogton, Surrey County Constabulary, Godstone.— Bow- street, June 28. Between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 26th instant, the dwelling- house of William Snowball, of Slough, Bucks, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a gold Watch, maker Cobett, ' F. G.' on back ; about £ 13 in Gold and Silver; six small silver Tea Spoous, much worn, two Dessert ditto, and a Table ditto, all marked ' F. G.' By two men who were seen going to and from the house : one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches hij » h, stout built, dark moustache and whiskers ; dressed in long black frock coat, black trousers, and high black hat. The other about 35 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light brown hair, moustache and whiskers, stout built ; dressed in long biack frock coat, black trousers, and low- crowned billycock hat; both of respectable appearance. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- itreet, June 28. Between 8 a. m. and 2 p. m. on the 24th instant, the dwelling- house of Henry Mapson, at Iver, was entered, and the following articles stolen therein : an old- fashioned smooth case silver Watch, open face, has a dent in centre of case ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, nearly new ; a pair of mixture cloth trousers, bouud round top with red braid ; a pair of lace- up Shoes with brass eyelets, bradded tips recently taken off; a black cloth Coat, pockets at, side round corners, had a Hand- kerchief in one pocket with red border ; an old black cloth Vest; three white calico Shirts, one nearly new, two very old and patched ; a woman's grey tweed Jacket, not lined, has a piece of lace round top pockets at side, a red button at top, and red buttons at pockefs ; aad an unbleached calico Pillow Case. Information to be given to Inspector Sutton, Bucks Constabu- lary, Iver, near Uxbridge, Middlesex.— Bow- street, June 28. Between 2 and 7 p in on the 26th instant, the cottage of John Freeman, of Datchet, Bucks, was broken into, and the following article? stolen therein : a gold breast Pin, three links crossing each other, one ditto square head, set with blue dots, one imitation gold ditto, snchor shape, a gold keeper Ring, and about 4s. in Silver and Coppers. Information to be given to Superinteudent Dunham, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- st, June 28. Between 11 p. m. on the 25th and 6 a. m. on the 26th ult., the dwelling- house of the Rev. Win. Dalton, of Little Burstead, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver Medal, a Card- case, a silver Pencil- case, an ivory Thermometer, a Chain with gold Appendages, and a small pocket Communion Service, the cup gilt inside and the plate marked with a cross, with a glory round it, in the centre, the whole in a claret- coloured The dwelling- house of Mr. W. G. Hunter, at Ore, was broken into earlv on the morning of the 27th instant, and a Derby Cheese ( from 24 to 30 lbs" weight), some Bread, and other articles stolen therein. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes ; to Superintendent Guestling, Hastings ; or any Police Station in Etst Sussex.— Bow- street June 28. 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. June 14. HORS3S AND OAm£ STEALING Stolen from a field in the parish of Chailey, between the 28th and 29th ultimo, the property of Mr. George Renward : ten 2 year old wether sheep, South Down breed, lately shorn, no marks on them, and in good condition. Whoever will give such information as sball lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders if stolen, shall receive £ 5 reward. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, to Superinten- dent Peacock, Lewes, to P. C. Phipps, Chailey, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen from Sturbitch Common, Cambridge, since the 24th ultimo, a thick bay Cob Horse, with black leg*, about 15 hands high, a few white hairs in the forehead, white saddle marks ; has hud a sore back, the scar of which is still visible; also a few hairs off his knees. Supposed to have been stolen by some low travelling horse dealers, who were attending a fair at Cambridge at the time. £ 7 reward will be paid on the convic- tion of the offender and restoration of the horse. Information to be given to Head Constable Turrall, borough Police, Cam- bridge.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen from a field at Cannock, on the 27th ultimo, a light brown or bay Horse, white stroke down face, three black legs, white on near hind fetlock joint, and about 1GJ hands high. Whoever will give such information to the owner, James Owens, contractor, Skinner- street, Wolverhampton, as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the horse, shall receive £ 1 reward. Information to be given to Captain Congrcve, Chief Constable, Stafford.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen from Ockham, Surrey, during the night of the 2nd instant, a dark brown Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, bushy tail, has a swelling sore on the hock just above the hoof on the off side, and goes lame, the property of Samuel Balis, of Ockham, Surrey, farmer. Information to be niveu to Super- intendent Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Iiow- street, July 5. Stolen from Ripley, Surrey, on the night of the 24th ult., two Doukeys, one a mare Donkey, 4 years old, heavy in foal, the head and back have been clipped, mid has a sind crack in hoof of one of the forefeet, and has never been shod ; the other, a light gelding Donkey, aged, and has a dark cross on each shoulder, the property of Charles Buxton, M. P., Fox Warren Wisley, Surrey. Information to be given to superintendent Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow sirect, July 5. Stolen on the night of the lst instant, from Hatfield Peveril, the property of Captain Lucas, a black Shetland gelding Pony, very aged, 10 hands high, a few grey hairs about the body, is shedding his coat, mane has, been braided and lays on left side, short, thick foretop, tail reaching to the hocks, tongue has been injured, and will not go in harness. Supposed by travellers from Chelmsford Rices, as many carts passed through the village that night. Information to be given to Superintendent May, Police Station, Witham, Essex.— Bow- street, July 6. Absconded from Pipe- with- Lyde, Herefordshire, charged with stealing a Mare ( recovered) on the 21st ult., the property of Mr. Thomas Fawke, of Weston Beggard : JaMES CHAM- BERLAIN, about 24 years of age ( looka younger), 5 feet 5 or 5J inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, whiskers appear to have been shaved off; he is a gioom and gardener, > md was dressed in grey clothes and rouuil .' civet hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Shire Hall, Hereford.— Bow- street, July 2. Stolen about 2 a. m. on the ist1 instant, from a field in Bradwall, an aged grey Mare, 12 or 1,1 hands high, broken knees, which have been recently blistered, short tail and mane, the off hind shoe broken. Information to be given to Super- intendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, Jul;/ 2. Stolen from Stourbridge Common, Cambridge, between the night of the 24th and morning of the 25th instant, the property of Mr. James Lee, of Newmarket- road, a valuable black horse Pony, white face, well up before, white spot undeij the belly, mane hangs on near side, nostrils inclined to be large,' hind legs white, near hoof worn at the toe, hind hoofs ar inclined to be white, about 7 years old, and 14 or 15 hand: high. Information to be given to Head Constable Turral Borough Police Office, Cambridge.— Bow- itreet, June 30. Stolen from a field at Grange Farm, in the borough o Bideford, during the i. ight of the 22nd instant, a giey nag Pony, between 6 and 7 years old, 12£ hands high, wart on nose, marked with the letter ' S.' under the saddle, square tail, and in good condition, the property of Mr. James Crang, maltster, & c. £ 1 reward will be paid on recovery of the pony, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be - given to Superintendent Vanstone, Bideford, North Devon.— Bow- street, June 30. dress and shawl, dark brown dress, and white stockings. A reward of £ 5 will be paid to any one giving such information as will lead to her apprehension and conviction, and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Inspector Barson, Buxton, or to Superintendent Hudson, Chapel en- le- Frith, Derby.— Bow- street, July 5. Absconded on the 26th ult., EDWARD GRIMES, late collector, aud employed at the Gazette Newspaper Office, Bir- mingham, now wanted upon a warrant for embezzlement. He is about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, florid com- plexion, dark brown hair, no beard or moustache ; dressed respectably, and is a native of Hereford, having previously kept an hotel there. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Glossop, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his arrest. — Boic- strett, July 5. Description of CHARLES BEWETZEIDER, who has absconded from Southam,{ charged with stealing £ 20 : he is 45 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, black hair, cut very short, and very round shouldered, short neck, very little whiskers, bow legged ; dressed in light coat and trousers, black waistcoat, Newcastle cap, dark blue with white check border ; he is well known at Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and almost every training stable for races in the country. Information to be given to Inspector Gaskins, Police Station, Southam.— Bow- street, July 6. Obtained on the 21st ultimo, from No. 95, Tachbrook- st., Pimlico: six holland Jackets, six Aprons, two Caps, ten Collars, two Shirts, two pairs of Socks, five Handkerchiefs, five Nightgowns, a Chemise, a pair of Drawers, a Dress Body, two pairs of Sleeves, and eight Towels. By a woman, 20 years of age, short, and dark complexion ; dressed in maroon skirt, paisley shawl, and black bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, July 5. Absconded on the 29th ult. from No. 0, William- street, Bethnal- green, stealing a Truck, painted lead colour, ' Howard' branded in several places ; eleven Clothes Boxes, eight of them grained with red border, the others covered with japanned cloth and brass nails. A man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, clean shaved ; dressed in dark clothes and black billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, July 5. Description of WILLIAM ( alias EDWARD) WILKINS, Clock and Watch Maker, Market Drayton, who absconded on the 27th ultimo, charged with stealing and converting to his own use a silver Watch entrusted to him to be repaired. He is about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, upright gait, slender, slightly freckled, inclined to sandy, slight whiskers. His wife is supposed to be with him, " about the same age, rather taller, and has a little boy about two years of age. He is known in Coventry, wheie he was apprenticed ; his mother ( formerly a publican) and brother reside there. He may endeavour to emigrate, and is supposed to have a number ot watches unlawfully obtained in his possession. Information to be given to Sergeant Howell, Market Drayton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bou- street, July 5. On the morning of the 26th instant the dead body of a full- grown female child was found concealed in a hedge at Skerton. A nost mortem examination proves that the child was born alive*. It was wrapped up in the Lancaster Guardian newspaper of March 14th, 1868, the Preston Chronicle of November 7th, 1868, and Liverpool Mercury of March 20th, 18G9.
