Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. " » * Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the I'OLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor ' most Use prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Offire, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. 2SURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- On the 4th instant, THOMAS ROSSER, of Lydbrook, Gloucestershire, was apprehended on his own confession of having, in the month of June, 1867, wilfully murdered a young woman in the town of Usk, and having thrown the body into the river; he stated that she told him she was a native of Wales, and her name was Jane Edwards ; she spoke Welsh, was dressed in dark clothes, and wore a bonnet. On the 11th of September, 1867, the dead body of a tall young woman, with dark hair, had lost a tooth in right side of upper 5 silver salt Stands, gold plaited inside, marked ' T. A. T.' 1 silver tealSpoon, crest— lion, shield, and cross. 2 silver salt Spoons. 1 plated decanter Stand. 1 silver sugar Ladle, black ebony handles. 1 silver toast Rack, large size. 1 silver pepper Castor. 1 silver plated sugar Basin, filligree pattern, handle on each side. 1 silver plated sugar Basin, marked ' A.' 1 plated egg Stand, 4 ditto egg Cups, and 4 ditto egg Spoons. 1 plated fish Slice and Fork, in a morocco leather case, lined with blue velvet. 8 plated dessert Knives and Forks, white ivory handles. 1 fish Napkin, figure of a fish worked in centre. Suspicion is attached to two men, one about 35 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, stout made, auburn hair, and sandy whiskers, cropped close ; dressed in dark clothes, and dark jim- crow hat; the other about 33 years of age, rather tall, siight make, had on a black hat and dark clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Police Station, Tattenhall, or to P. C. Gosling, Famdon, Cheshire.— Bow- street, June 18. During the night of the 16th instant, the Eridge Station, on the Brighton, Uckfield, and Tunbridge Wells Railway, in the parish of Roth- rfield, Sussex, was broken and entered, and £ 6 10s. in Gold, and £ 1 16s. in Silver and Copper Monies stolen therein. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or to any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, June 18. On the night of the 14th instant, a dwelling- house in the city of York, was broken and entered and 6tolen therein : nine old- fashioned silver tea Spoon, marked ' D.;' a ditto, marked • G. E. D.;' two salt Spoons : two mustard Spoons ; and a tea caddy Spoon. £ 2 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion thereto, on application to Chief Constable Haley, Police Station, York.— Bow- street, June 16. On the night of the 9th instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Forster, Clifton, near York, was broken and entered, and the following plate stolen therein : a large Soup Spoon, three jaw, had two rings on her fingers, and dressed in scarlet or Tea ditt0j six porkg> a TaWe Sp00Dj three Dessert ditto, and magenta body, dark skirt, and without shoes or bonnet, was tw0 « ait ditto, all with crest— stag's head and neck ; a long found in the river about eight miles below the town of Usk, I Gravy Spoon, with crest- stag's head and neck and an arm was not identified, and is supposed to be the murdered woman, holding a broken spear ; three Egg Spoons, richly carved, Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Usk, or to m„ ted ' M.;' two plain Dessert Spoons ; and a large Cup, Superintendent Mcintosh, Pontypool, Monmouthshire.— Bovy itreet, June 21. Description of two men charged with wounding John Shelly, game keeper, to Frederick Arkwright Esq., on the 9th instant, in the township of Lea : JAS. GREENHOUGH, labourer, 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, light or sandy hair, little or no whiskers, fresh complexion, very round shouldered; TIMOTHY KNOWLES, labourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender make ; dressed in grey clothes ; they may apply for work in quarries, or as mason's labourers, they are supposed to be in Yorkshire, having been traced to Sheffield. Information to be given to Inspector Sh8rpe, Police Station, Wirksworth, Derbyshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, June 18. ROBBERS AND LARCENY F£ OM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the betting enclosure at Clewer Races, on the 16th instant: a pocket Book, containing four £ 10 Bank of England Notes, three of them numbered 43068, 43059, and 43060. Also stolen from the person at Clewer Rices, on the 16th instant: a silver double cased hunting Watch, No. 4616. Information to he given to Inspector Reece, Clewer, Windsor, - Bow- street, June 21. GEORGE FRENCH, 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, brown hair, whiskers shaved off; dressed in black coat and vest, sandy moustache, light trousers, small blue necktie, and black hat, absconded from his bail on the 3rd instant, charged on remand from Westminster Police Court, with stealing from the person a silver cut lever hunting Watch, No. 1081, ( not recovered).— Metropolitan Police, T Division, June 16, which has since been found in a field two miles off, broken up. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, or in proportion thereto, on application to Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary Police Station, Heworth.— Bow- street, June 16. 26 years of age, 6 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, full face ; dreHsed in dark mixture overcoat, light trousers, plaid wrapper, felt hat, and lace- up boots.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, June 18. Stolen on the night of the 13th instant, at Woodham Locks, near Weybridge, a dark brown Mare, 8 years old, 16 hands high, small head, a tumour on the hind leg, and two warts above the fetlocks. Information to be given to J. Timmings, Ash, Surrey, near Aldershot. — Bow- street, June 16. BURGLARY AND MOUSE BREAKING. Between 10 and 3 o'clock on the 17th inst., the dwelling house of Elizabeth Brown, in the parish of Sonning, Berks, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of salmon- coloured cloth Trousers, with black stripe down each side ; a Waistcoat of the same material, watch pocket on left breast; and a pair of Braces. Supposed by a man, about 26 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 6 inches high, dirty appearance, and slight make ; dressed in dark jacket, pepper- and- salt coloured trousers, and billycock hat ; has the appearance of a tramp. Information to be given to Superintendent Millard, Town Hall, Wokingham, Berks.— Bow- street, June 21. Stolen by means of house breaking from a dwelling- house at! Farndon, Cheshire, during the night of the 13th instant: 1 silver mustard Pot, filigree pattern, with a figure on each side, each clasping hands, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Lvtchett Maltravers, between the 10th and 14th instant, a bay cart Mare, 6 years old, 14 hands 3 inches high, white spot on off hind foot, thick set, and in good condition, the property of Mr. George Ames, who will pay all reasonable expenses on its recovery, and conviction of the offender or offenders. A man of the following description was seen in the neighbourhood a day or two before the mare was missing, inquiring after Mr. Ames's horses : about 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, very dark sallow complexion, dark hair ( cut short), whiskers, arid moustache, and stout build ; dressed in light coat, cord trousers fitting tight at the knee, and black jimcrow hat, had the appearance of a jockey. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Hammond, Dorsetshire Constabulary, Wimborne — Bow- street, June 21. Stolen from a meadow at Sonning. Berks, on the night of the 16th instant, the property of Mr. James Gosling, a brown nag Mare, aged, 15 hands high, white blaze on face, greyish on the sides and fl ink, long switch tail, without shoes, and fat from being turned out to grass; was traced through the turnpike gate at Maidenhead Thicket, in the direction of London, at 12 o'clock the same night. £ 10 reward will be given on recovery of the Mare, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Millard, Town Hall, Wokingham, Berks.— Bow- street, June 21. Stolen from a field at Sonning, between 1 and 2 p. m. on the 14th instant, the property of Mr. J. Witherington, a bay Mare, 6 years old, small star on forehead, off hind leg fired seven weeks since, one very thick shoe oft hind, no shoes on the other feet. £ 10 reward will be paid on recovery of the Mare and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Howarth, Henley- on- Thames, Oxon.— Bow- street, June 18. Stolen during the night of the 8th instant from a field near the Pack Horse, in the parish of Kmg's Norton, a fan- coloured mare Pony, aged, aud about 12 hands high, the pro. perty of Mr. Thomas Walter Seven guineas reward will be paid upon conviction of the offender or offenders. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Humphries, King's Heath, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, June 18. Stolen on the 10th instant, from a field at Laleham, a dark brown mare Pony, 11 hands high, fore and hind quarters darker than body, several mouse- coloured spots on body. By a man, LAROSHY AND SMBSZZLELSENT A warrant has been issued against ROBERT HAZEL- GROVE, a baker, who absconded from Brighton on the 14th instant charged with embezzling money belonging to his late employer, Mr. Hugh Mackay, of West- street, Brighton. He is about 26 years of age, ver}' short and slight, light brown hair, small light whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a black cloth coat, light tweed trousers with black stripe down the sides, light tweed vest and high black hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton.— Bow- st, June 21. Further information respecting the man charged with stealing the Watch at Redcar, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant, he was apprehended at Ripon on the 16th instant, and the Watch is recovered, he has been at York, and is known there by the np. me of BRIGGS, has been going in the name of ROBERT WOOD, but his proper name is ROBERT THOMPSON WOOD, he has also been at Scar- borough. Information to be given to Superintendent Prest, North Riding Constabulary, Guisborough, Yorkshire.— Boa- street, Juni 21. Absconded, charged on a warrant with s- taling six plated Watches: JAMES REEVES, a hawker, native of Birming- ham, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and complexion, brown n. oustache, and bald place on fore part of head ; supposed dressed in dark mixture suit. Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Town Hall, Oxford.— Bow- street, June 21. Absconded on the 16th instant, from No. 3, Amelia- terrace, Homerton, stealing a tin cash Box, containing £ 26 in Gold, Silver, and Copper Monies, from the Prince of Wales' beer- house, King's- terrsce, Q, ueen's- road, Homerton. A man, 24 years ot' age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, haz 1 eyes ; dressed in light cloth vest, light moleskin trousers, coloured neckerchief, and black cloth cap.— Metropo- litan Police, N Division, June 21. Stolen on the 15th instant, from Manor- road, Hatcham : a circular black silk Mantle, new, trimmed round bottom with quilted satin, 12 inches deep, lined throughout with quilted silk ; also a paisley shawl. By a woman, 35 years of age, 5 ft. 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair and eyes ; dressed in black stuff, old black bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, June 21. Absconded on the 13th instant, from 9, Southampton- st, Strand, stealing a £ 5 Bank of England Note, and £ 2 in Gold and Silver. A womau, 45 years of age, 6 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, and sharp features ; dressed in dark clothes, and black bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, F Division, June 21. Absconded between 10- 30 p. m. the 13th, and 2* 30 a. m. on the 14th instant, from No. 30, South street, Isleworth, stealing an oval Trunk, 2 feet long by 2 feet wide, top covered with blue spotted paper, lock deficient, containing a black frock Coat, a pair of light drab Trousers, a white Vest, pearl buttons, two Shirts, 1 check and 1 whice, and two pairs of cotton Stockings. A man. 20 years of age, 6 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, slight beard ; dressed in old brown coat and trousers, lace- up boots, aud blue cloth cap.— Metro- politan Police, T Division, June 21. Description of GEORGE CLARK, late of No. 6, Penk- hull- terrace, near Stoke on- Trent, a brewer's traveller, who is charged with embezzlement : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, light whiskers, shaved off under the chin, moustiche inclined to be sindy, and has a swaggering gait ; dressed when last seen in plaid trousers, dark coat and vest, generally a black macin- tosh, white or black high felt hat, and may be wearing black leggings ; he is very fond of singing. Has lately been travel- ling for a brewery firm at Macclesfield. and is well known in the pottery towns, in North Staffordshire. He has pre- viously been in custody at Hanley and Longton. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable Alexander, Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Box- street, June 18. Absconded on the 9th instant, from No. 31, Piccadilly, stealing four £ 5 Bank of England Notes ; £ 10 in Gold ; and two Cheques, one tor £ 15 in the name of Wallington, the other for £ 3 10s. A woman 26 years of age, 4 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair and eyes, tooth out in front of upper jaw ; dressed in dark 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. Stolen from an hotel in Bolton, on the morning of the 15th instant : a lady's black silk Dress, nearly DJBW, with bugle trimmings ; a man's black cloth walking Coat, with short, laps, trimmed with black braid, nearly new ; and 6s. in Money. By a man, who lodged there one night, of gentlemanly appear- ance, from 35 to 40 years of age, rather tall and stout, fair complexion, blue eyes, Eandy whiskers and moustache, and light hair ; had on a blue pilot cloth coat, with pockets at each side, dark cloth trousers, and black silk hat, Had a travelling Rug and an Umbrella with him, the rug had waste paper wrapped in it when he came, aud on going away the silk dress was substituted for the paper. Description of WILLIAM KIRK HAM, farm labourer, of Chester, charged on a warrant with rape : he is 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair, rough face, with sciirs ( one recent) on left ear, dark whiskers turning grey, stout make, a native of Kinnerton, Cheshire ; dress, d in black frock coat, light vest, black or corduroy trousers, and grey billycock hat; he will most likely seek for work at harvesting in Cheshire or North Wales. Absconded from Middlesborough, charged with obtaining £ 1 by false pretences from the wife of John Towsey, Albert- street, on the 16th instant. A boy, a native of Doncaster. about 15 years of age ; dressed in a dirty grey suit, and cheesecutter cap, aud has a peculiar look about his eyes. He has been three years at the Industrial School at York, and was liberated at Christmas last. Obtained on the 15th instant, by false pretences, from Margaret Bagley, Carline's Fields, iu the borough of Shrews- bury : a pepper- and- salt- coloured Coat, two pockets outside, one in left breast ; two Vests, one light colour, open- breasted, the other black cloth, buttons up to neck ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, much worn; a billycock Hat; a pair of military Boots ; two silk NecktieB; and 6s. in Silver. By WILLIAM GILBERT, who has absconded : about 47 years of age, 5 feet 6 j inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair mixed with grey, grey eyes, long thin face, and slender make ; dressed in a light grey suit, much worn ; he is a millstone dresser, a native ot Ombersley, Worcestershire, was formerly in the 1st Battalion 4 h King's O < n R- gitueut, and is marked with the letter ' D.' on left side ; it is likely he may make for Worcester ; he was discharged from Shrewsbury Gaol on the 15th instant, having been imprisoned for a similar offence. Absconded about the 1st instant charged on a warrant with fraud: HENRY FREEMAN, alias IVEL DAVIS, late of the Queen's Arms public- house, High- street, Islington, about 39 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, proportionate build, dark hair^ black moustache and whiskers, thick ( Dundreary), turn- up nose, dresses fashionably. Description of three meu committed for trial to the adjourned sessions at Coventry on the Ist proximo, charged with breaking and entering two houses a' Berkswell. on the 14th and 28th ultimo, and one house at Sroneleigh on the 11th inst. : JAMES BROWN, alias SLENDERMAN, 34 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, grey eyes, brown hair, pale com- plexion, long visage, Wellington nose, slim build, and has been cupped on left breast; dressed in old coarse dark mixture coat and vest, cord trousers, blue and white scarf, and billycock hat; is a native of Walsall, and has been convicted of stealing from a shop, and of passing counterfeit coin. WILLIAM ARNOLD, 31 years of age, 5 feet 3J inches high, hazel eyes, black hair, and inatked with smallpox; dressed in black cloth jacket, cord trousers, fustain waistcoat and slop, and strong lace- up boots, nearly new ; is supposed to have been convicted in the counties of Stafford and Worcester. ISAAC CASHMORE, 28 years ot age, 5 feet 6 inches high, grey eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion ; dressed in old mole- skin jacket, large white buttons, moleskin trousers, and cord vest, grey stitched billycock hat, and strong laca- up boots, nearly new; has been previously convicted. Information to be given to Inspector Gallaway, Constabulary Station, Kenilworth.— Bow- itrect. June 21. Remanded to the Castle, Norwich, charged with burglary at Long StriUon, Norfolk, on the night of the 16t. li instant, two men of the following description, supposed to be brothers : WILLIAM HODGES, alius JOHN THOMPSON, 23years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, IIBZ^ I eyes, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, small whiskers ; dressed in long dark overcoat, mixture trousers strong lace- up boots, and chummy hat; says he is a harnessmaker, and a native of G. isport. CHARLES HODGES, alias WILLlAxM JOHNSON, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and eyes, little or no whiskers, small features; dressed in short dark frock coat, mixture trousers, and chummy hat ; says he has been a gentleman's servant, and that he waa born at Gosport; one of his knees has been injured. These men have lately been in London, Ipswich, Colchester, Yarmouth, and Norwich, aud are of rather respectable appear- ance. A double- barrelled Gun, nearly new, in good condition, was pledged in Norwich by the prisoners on the 12th instant, in the name of Wm. Robinson ; duplicates of other articles, pledged in London and elsewhere, were found on the prisoners. Description of JOSEPH ANDREW DAWSON, a native of Failsworth, near Manchester, who was convicted on the 17th instant of stealing lrom a public houee till iu the borough of Ashton- under- Lyne on the 16th iustant, and sentenced to six months' bard labour. Ab > ut 20 years of age, 6 ft. 3 ins. high, brown hair, fair complexion, small whiskers and propor- tionate make, and has a scrofula mark on the right side of his neck; dressed iu a black cloth swiDger cjat, dark mixture cloth vest, black and brown striped trousers, drab billycock hat and lace- up boots with drab fronts. He had 28 pawn- brokers' Duplicates in his possession relating to wearing apparel, umbrellas, and jewellery, all pledged in Manchester. Information to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, June 21. A tramp, giving the name of JOHN BRADLEY, is committed for trial at the assizes at Bury St. Eduunds, on the 2nd August next, for arson : he is about 19 years of age, 6 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, and long face ; stated that he was a coal miner, and a native of Coatbridge, near Glasgow ; dressed in black cloth coat, dark cap, and dark green plaid trousers. Information to be given to Police Constable Smith, Kessinglaud Waringford, East Suffolk.— Bow- street, June 21. Description of CHARLES SIIARPE, comnitted for trial at the next quarter sessions for the borough ol Bury St. Edmunds for larceny : 38 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch ligh, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, small tuft of hair on chin; dressed in black velvet coat, bound with black braid, grey ribbed trousers tight in the legs, brown check vest, spring- sije boots, and brown round low crowned hat; he says he belongs to Newmarket, and was formerly a jockey, but latterly employed by horse dealers about the country. He was last year con- victed of embezzlement at Northampton, and sentenced to cine months' imprisonment, and has been tramping since Vis dis- charge. Information to be given to Superintendent Roberts, Borough Police Station, Bury St. Edmuuds, Suffolk.— Bow- street, June 21.
