D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As HO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the I'OLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor oWSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War 0ffic2, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Between 2 and 3 p. m. on the 16th instant a small Hamper was found in a water closet, at the Great Northern Railway Station, Peterborough, containing a newly born male child, wrapped up in a woman's jacket, made of black woollen stuff, the lid of the hamper was fastened down with cord, and addressed on a letter envelope • Mrs. Beedle, Twyford Arms, Twyford- st., Caledonion- road, London,' ' Passenger's Luggage,' and inside the envelope was written in the same hand writing, ' All explained when I see you,' and a coroner's jury have returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Brooke, Constabulary Office, Peterborough.— Bow- street, tebruary 22. On the 23rd ultimo, the dead body of a newly- born male Child was found deposited in an open grave, in the Wolver- hampton Cemetery, in a small deal box, with the name ' Harper Twelvetrees. Blacking,' on a paper pasted inside the lid, and a coroner's jury have returned a verdict of 1 Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' A reward of £ 25 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any per- son who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the said child, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to the like result. Information to be given to Captain Segrave, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton.— Bow- ttreet, February 15. The body of a newly- born male child, quite naked, was found in a field in the parish of Llantarnam, in the county of Monmouth, on the 28th ultimo. A verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown has been returned at the coroner's inqueBt. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Usk, or to Superintendent Mcintosh, Pontypool.— Bow- street, February 15. About 9 p. m. on the 4th inst., Martha Hillas was wilfully murdered in the Hope and Anchor- yard, Bank- street, Bradford, in the county of York. Her Majesty's Government will pay £ 100 reward t-> any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the said Martha Hillas, and will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as will lead to the like result. Information to be given to Chief Constable Grauhan, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 15. Description of JOHN COOPER, for whose apprehension a warrant has been granted, charged with the murder of Peter Pearson and Sarah Ann Cooper, at Poplar, on the 7th instant. He is 26 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, florid complexion, brown hair, and whiskers round chin same colour, a mark over left eyebrow, lost thnmb on the left hand ; dressed in ( supposed) black frock coat, light cloth trousers, bluo cloth • ap ( French peak). By trade an engineer. Information to be given to the Detective Police, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 12. crowned black hat, and of smart appearance, late of the 97th Regiment, from which he was discharged, he left Sidmouth the same evening he cashed the cheque, and went to Exeter by the mail cart. Information to be given to Superintendent Dore, Devon County Constabulary, Honiton, or at the Cots'ab- bulary Offices, Exeter.— Bou- ttreet, February 22. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of different gentlemen at the Pontefract Races on the 18th and 19th instant: a silver lever Watcb, with white face, and ' John Stainland, Malton,' engraved on the inner case ; a silver lever Watcb, with white face, and sunk seconds ; a silver lever Watch, No. 10,391, with gold hands, plain face, and seconds hand ; a large size patent gold lever Watch, with chronometer balance, centre seconds, cream- coloured dial, the hinge of the back case has been re- paired. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Pontefract, Yorkshire— Bow- s!., February 22. Charged with robbery in the city of York : a man,, about 40 years of age, middle size, proportionate build, no whiskers, sandy moustache ; dressed in a short brown coat, dark trousers, patched behind, brown or black billycock hat, with buckle at side, and boots cut down the front ; a tramp. Information to be given to Chief Constable Haley, York.— Bow- it., Feb. 19. FORGERY. Dt scription of ARTHUR BROWN, charged on a warrant with obtaining the sum of £ ib on the 1st instant, at the Sidmouth Branch of the London and Soulh Western Bank, by means of a false cheque, drawn on Hopkinson's Bank, London, he the said Arthur Brown having no account with that Bank whatever : he is about 27 years of age, about 6 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fair complexion, small dark moustache, no whiskers, dark hair, cut short, slight build ; dressed when last seen in a dark pea jacket, dark cloth trousers and vest, low BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, from the premises of M. Napeen, on the 15th instant : a neck Ornament, with two carbuncles and a diamond, set in Indian gold ; a gold Buckle, set with pearls ; a gold Ring, with a circle of large pearls, and grey hair in the centre as a setting ; a Ring, with hair and ' N.' in gold on it; an onyx guard Ring ; a gold Ring, with a large stone ; two deep mourning Rings ; sundry other Rings, with hair ; a large amethyst Brooch, and a smaller ditto ; an Indian shawl Pin, gold, in the shape of a serpent's head, with ruby eyes ; a thin gold Pin, with an enamelled female head on it; a gold neckerchief Pin, with a jacinth stone; a gold ditto, with an embossed top, old- fashioned ; a pair of heavy Sugar Tongs, marked ' H. N.;' two gold Snaps, a large pearl divided and set in them for bracelets ; and about £ 3 in Cash. Also, the property of Mrs. Sarah Paul ; a large gold oval Locket, fully engraved in pattern, with hair in it ; a gold neckerchief Slide, with an enamelled head on it ; a gold Brooch ; a thin gold Ring, with a crystal heart set round with small pearls ; and a gold Hoop, with small pearls. The whole of the property can be identified. Information to be given to Super- intendent Baird, Devon County Constabulary, Paignton, or to Sergeant ( No. 120) Ockford, Devon County Constabulary, Town Hall, Torquay, who will pay £ 10 reward on conviction of the offender or offenders.— Bow- street, February 19. During the night of the 15th instant, the house of the Rev. J. M. Echalaz, of Appleby, Derbyshire, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about 30s. ; the Tops of two ink- stands, plain silver; a Penknife, pearl handle ; a packet of pearl Buttons ; and a small gilt Case, containing needles. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Burton, County Con- stabulary, Stapenhill, near Burton- on- hent.— Boto- street, February 19. Between 7 and 8 p. m. on the 14th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Smithson, baker, Dover- street, Canterbury, was entered, and the following property stolen therein : twenty six Sovereigns; £ 5 8s. or 9a. in Gold, Silver and Copper Monies ; a gold| Chain; a very old pinchbeck Watch. JNo. 425 ; a large gold Ring, set round with stones and pearl in centre ; six silver Tea Spoons, marked ' M. A. C.' Supposed by three men who were seer? about the neighbourhood : one tall, dressed in black coat, the others dressed in fustian or cord, rather short, and bad the appearance of bricklayers. Information to be given to Superintendent Davies, City Police Office, Canterbury.— Bov>- street, February 17. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 15th instant, from the residence of M. Cann, Esq., at Torquay: a lady's gold Geneva Watch, engine- turned, Hall marked ; a small gold link Chain, much worn ; a round Scotch pebble Brooch, garter pattern, set in silver; an oval topaz Brooch, set in gold ; and a small silver Padlock belonging to a Bracelet. Can be identified. Information to be given to Superintendent Baird, Devon County Constabulary. Paignton, or to Sergeant Ockford, Torquay.— tiou>- itreet, February 17. Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Bromwell, Police Station, Shiffnal, Salop.— Bow- ttreet, February 22. Stolen on the night of the 8tn nltimo, from Rode Hall Park, Cheshire, a bay half- bred horse Colt, rising 3 years old, about 15 hands high, has rubbed the hair off his tail and mane, and a bay Pony, about 11 hands high, aged. Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Middlewich, or to Sergeant Naylor, Ashbury, Cheshire.— Bow- street, February 19. Stolen from a stable at Driffield Wold, the property of Mr. Richard Hornby, a black cart Mare, with white mark on forehead, nose, and hind foot, 23 years of age and stone blind ; also a Halter. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Young, East Riding Constabulary, Great Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 17. SORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field in Wavertree, between the 9th and 10th instant, a dark brown cart Mare, about 14 J hands high, white face, hind feet white, long tail, a deep sand crack in far hind foot, 1J inch up the hoof. Any one giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the Mare, will receive £ 5 reward on application at the Police Office, Wavertree. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Police Office, Prescot.— Bow- street, February 22. Found about a month since, at Brockton, supposed to have been stolen, a bay cob Horse, about 11 hands high, in low condition, has the appearance of having been used in a coal pit. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Absconded from Thorney, on the night of the 17th inst., charged with stealing a Flagon Basket, containing the ramrod of a pistol, and ^ ib. of Gunpowder, in separate parcels. A tramp, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light brown hair, has lost one eye ( supposed the right); dressed in shabby velvet coat and cap, of very dirty appearance, and says he has been a chimney sweeper ; was last seen at Crowland on the night of the 18th, and went in the direction of Deeping. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Whittlesey, Cambs.— Bow- ttreet, February 22. Further information respecting HENRY J. BARTON, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 9th November last, as having absconded from Worcester charged with embezzling monies of his employers, Messrs. Hill, Evans, add Co. He is only 30 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, stout build, full face, rather sallow complexion, light hair, light sandy beard, mous- tache, and whiskers, and betrays a hurried excited manner ; was a traveller in vinegar and British wines. Several cases of forgery by him have been lately discovered. £ 20 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to the Worcester City Police, who hold a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, February 22. Stolen between 7 and 8 p. m. of the 19: h instant, from the dwelling- house of Mrs. Straight, Margaretting, Essex, a rose- wood workbox ; and a japanned Dressing- case, containing: a lady's diamond Ring, engraved ' Samuel Straight, died 1834;' two Mourning ditto, one engraved ' Elizabeth Otten,' the other ' Emily Baker ;' two Hoop ditto, one pearls, the other pearls and emeralds ; three Rings, two chrysolite, one garnets and pearls; a silver Chain and Cross, a pair of gold Ear- rings, two gold Lockets, one small ( with hair) ; various black Orna- ments, and a gentlemau's silk Pocket- handkerchief, blue and white plaid check. By two men of the following description : one abont 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, very dark whiskers and moustache ( possibly false) ; dressed in dark tweed stable jacket, cord or tweed trousers, low deerBtalker hat, and long white wrapper lound his neck. The other about 25 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, long thin face, small sandy whiskers and moustache, and dressed similarly to the first, with an alpaca overcoat. Both had the appearance of grooms or stable helpers. They took tickets for London at the Ingatestone Station of the Great Eastern Railway, at 9 p. m. on the 19th instant, got into the train, but jumped out again and ran away. Information to be giveu to Deputy Chief Constable Pattisson, Chelmsford, Essex.— Bow- street, February 22. Stolen between 7 and 8 a. m. the 17th instant, from No. 66, Lant- street, Borough : a brown melton Overcoat ; a blue reefing Jacket; a pair of Bedford cord Trousers and Vest, • Hickman' on buttons ; a pair of side spring Boots; and a small black Portmanteau. By a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, hazel eyes ; dressed in dark cost, mixture vest and trousers, brown felt hat, and coloured necktie — Metropolitan Police, M Division, February 22. Absconded, JOHN FIELDSEND BEAUMONT, a com- mercial traveller, chaaged upon a warrant with embezzling £ 16 12s., the money of Mr. James Bittison, of Barnsley, wine and spirit merchaut : he is 33 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers, stout built, walks erect, and has been in the army ; generally dressed in a dark cloth pea jacket, sealskin cap, or dark billycock hat, light mixture trousers and vest, and lace- up boots, with brass eyelet holes, sometimes wears a brown cloth overcoat, with velvet collar. Information to be given to Super- intendent Sykts, Police Office. Barnsley, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 22. Charged with larceny : JOHN COX, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, long features, brown hair, no whis- kers ; dressed in dark blue cloth shooting coat and vest ; a ha wker of drapery goods, which he generally carries in a black oil cloth with straps round ; he has a hawker's liceuce in the name of WM. HASNEY, Rochdale, last known residence Horbury, near Wakefield; and JOHN DUBOIS, about 60years, of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, grey hair, no beard, full face, stoutly built, and walks lame ; dressed in blue ribbed cloth frock coat ( generally buttoned up), aud black hat ; a hawker of drapery, which he tarries in a white wrapper. Information to be given to Chief Constable Grauhan, Borough Police, Bradford, who holds a wscraut for their apprehension.— Botc- tt., | February 22. Absconded from Torquay, on the ( ith iustant, carrying with him a black Portmanteau. ROBERT CHURCHILL, a clerk to Messrs. Hearder and Co., wine merchants, Torquay, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, thin nose, black moust » che and whiskers, slight build, and walks erect ; generally dresses iu dark fashionable clothing, also wears a long dress cost, and black low- crowned hat. lie is most likely to be found in company of a female ( having deserted his wife and fami y here), iu the neighbourhood of the Hay market, London, and is fond of billiards. Description of ROBERT ZIMMERMAN, a German barber, charged upon a warrant with stealing Wearing Apparel, from Mr. Christopher Leihrs, his master : he is about 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, large projecting forehead, moustache, and speaks very good English ; dressed ( supposed) in black frock coat, overcoat, dark trousers, atnd black hat. Information to he given to Superintendent Glossop, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his appreh- n- sion.- Bow- street, February 19. Stolen about 9 am. on the 16th instaut, from a b. edro^ m at the Cross Keys public- house, Reading : a dark mixture dress Coat, with pockeis on the liips, and t wo rows of U'O'd laid on rouud the outside ; a pair of fancy Trousers und Vest of same material, all nearly new. By three men who lodged at the house tqe previous Dight : one about 30 years of ago, vejrv full liace, and no whiskeis; the other two are from 26 to CO years of age, all were decently dressed in dark clothes, one ( of them had shoes with wooden 6oles ; they left three sets ot shoemakers' tools behind ; the trousers and vest, were pledged at Newbury, about 4 p. m. on the same day, and the men shortly afterwards went in the direction of Marlborough. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Borough Police Office, Reading.— tlwo- street, February 19. Description of JOSEPH CARRIER, who absconded from Peterborough on the ( 5th instaut, charged with stealing a Sovereign ; he is 32 years of age, 6 feet 8J inches high, stout figure, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers recently shaved off, walks a little on one side, through having his thigh broken by a shot when in the army ; dressed when last seen in a pilot jacket, cotton cord trousers, and dark cloth cap wi| h peak, and often wears a short white slop under his jacket. In- formation to be given to Supeiintendent Brooke, Constabulary- Office, Peterborough, who holds a warrant for his apprehension- — Bow- street, February 17. Absconded from Peterborough Union, on the 31st ultimo, charged under a warrant wi; h stealing a suit of Clothes, the property of the Guardians of the above Union : JAS. BLAKE, 62 yeais of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion, hair and whiskers turning grey, and thin face; dressed iu black cord jacket and vest, patched fustian trousers, black billycock hat, strong lace- up boots, blue check neckerchief, and had a short drab slop with him, which he may be wearing. Description of a woman who has absconded from Ports- month, charged with stealing a male Child : she is about 38 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexioo, and very shabbily dressed. The child is about 6 years of age, sandy hair, and has a mark near the gr jin from an abscess ; dressed when last seen in a suit of cord clothes ( which was given him at the Winchester Union). He is very intelligent, and if questioned, will say that he was born at Hull, and that his father is dead. The woman is believed to be travelling the country with the boy for the purpose of begging, and is likely to apply for admission into the Casual Wards of Workhouses. Missing from her home at Colchester, Essex, since the 3rd instant, MARY ANN KIRKBY, between 13 and 14 years of age, small for her age, pale complexion, dark brown hair and eves, her hands have the marks of recent chilblains ; dressed when last seen in a black silk hut trimmed with black and grey check silk iibbou, black cloth jacket, quite plain, black frock, with short sleeves, trimmed worsted braid, brown cloth jacket or body without sleeves, fastened up the front with white bone buttons, lilac pinafore fastened on the shoulders with two buttons, small black silk kerchief round her neck, grey stockings with red stripes round, and leather boots laced up in front ; she has an aunt residing at Chitterne St. Mary, near Heytesbury, Wiltshire. It is feared that some ill has befallen her. Information to be given to Head Constable Downes, Town Hall, Colchester.— Bow- street, February 22. Description of JAMES SIZER, labourer, Outwell, Isle of Ely, who is charged with unlawfully and wilfully breaking out of and escaping from Wisbech Prison on the morning of the 21st ultimo : he is 41 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark sallow complexion, round face, wide mouth, dark brown hair turning grey, hszel eyes, short neck, tqare build, scar on bridge of nose and on knuckle of forefinger of right hand ; dressed when last seen in a drab slop, and old greasy fustian trousers ; has the appearance of a tramp. He was seen at Thorney, Isle of Ely, on the 5th instant, and was then making his way towards Peterborough ; he will most likely be found begging, or pretending to sell horse balls. Information to be given to Superintendent Stocking, Elm- road, Wisbech, Isle of Ely, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and will pay all reasonable expenses.— Box- street, Fbruary 22. Description of GEORGE WHITE, who is remanded till the 26th instant, on a charge of larceny : 38 years of age, 5 feet 7? inches high, slight make, grey eyes, brown hair, tuft of hair on chin, small moustache, nose rather flat, having been broken, says he is a smith, and that he is a native of Sheffield, where he has a wife and four children, residing at No. 30, Water- street; dressed in old black coat aud vest, blue trousers, having a light- coloured pair underneath. Had in his possession a small book, ' Cicero de Senec.,' with the name ' Miles' written ii. side the cover. It is suspected that he has committed offences elsewheie, and been previously convicted Information to be given to Superintendent. Pnlgeon, County Police, Bourn, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 22. Further information respecting WM. THIRKITTLE, a labourer, of Eye, suffolk, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 30th of December last, charged with night poaching aud assaulting the gamekeepers at Nacton, on the llth ot the same month : he is now supposed to be with his brother, who works at the coal mines at Durham, and goes by the n& me of CRANE. . t' 20 rewaid will le paid on his apprehension and conviction. Information to be given to the Police at Woodbridge, East Suffolk, who hold a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- itreet, February 22.
