Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. C. *,* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to tbe Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the t'OLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor mnst toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," aa they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of two navvies charged with manslaughter at Eye and Dunsden, Oxon, on the night of the 2nd instant: one gives the name of JOHN OKE, a native of Hungerford, Berk- shire, 19 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark com- plexion, stout figure, little round shouldered, and has a galvanized ring on little finger of left hand ; the other gives the name of WILLIAM SMITH, a native of Hungerford, Berkshire, 19 or 20 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, light complexion and hair, pockpitted, thin figure, and has the flesh from cheeks to nose contracted into seams, from the small pox; both wore ear- rings, and were dressed in short slops] with bands round the waists, blue caps with brass button on each side, and cord or fustian trousers. They were traced in the direction of Basingstoke. Information to he given to Superin- tendent Howarth, Henley- on- Thames, Oxon. — Bow- street, November 11. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING- During the night of tho 30th ultimo, a Barn and other Outbuildings at Great Champson Farm, Molland, Devon, the property of Sir Wm. Throckmorton, Bart., were completely destroyed by fire, a quantity of Corn, Straw, and Implements, belonging to Mr. John Quartly, the tenant, were also com- pletely destroyed ; supposed by an Incendiary. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Wood, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- street, November 13. FORGERY. Absconded from Devonport, on or about the 23rd ultimo, charged with Forgery: EDWARD HENRY MARTIN, Secretary to the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Devonport Branch; he is 38 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, grey eyes, thin features, slight make, curly whiskers, turning grey, and is lame of left leg, through rheumatism in knee, an engine pattern maker by trade, and lately worked in H. M.' s Steam Factory, Keyham. £ 50 reward will be paid by the Society of Amalgamated Engineers for information leading to the appre- hension of the above man. Information to be given to Head Constable Lynn, Devonport, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, November 16. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- Stolen from the person of a farmer, at Leominster Fair, on the 9th inst., a cloth Bag, with two compartments, containing about £ 42 in Gold, four £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. W | P 10578, May 18, 1868, Q, | q 77864, April 24, 1867, X | L 94226, Sep. 15, 1868, and X | k 19002, Aug. 19, 1868, and a £ 5 Note of the Worcester Old Bank. By a woman, about 40 years of age, rather tall, stout, and supposed to be pockpitted ; dressed in dark clothes, black bonnet, and wore a fall over her face: Information to be given to Superintendent Johnson, Borough Police Office, Leominster, Herefordshire. — Bow- street, November 13. Stolen from the person of Elisha Baker, of Little Fin borough, Suffolk, on the night of the 3rd inst., an old- fashioned silver pair- cased Watch, maker Taylor, Framlingham, No. 889. Information to be given to Inspector Freeman, Stowmarket, Suffolk.— Bow- street, November 11. BURGLARY AND MOUSE BREAKING. Between 2 and 3 a. m. on the 14th instant a draper's shop at Preston, near Brighton, Sussex, was broken into and entered by two men, and a quantity of clothing packed ready for re- moval. One man was apprehended in the shop; he gave the name of JAS. BERREY, native of Bristol, from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches, sallow complexion, sunken eyes, brown short hair, mermaid and wreath on right arm, ' H. W. A. Fielder' on left arm, bracelets on wrists; dressed in an old ragged black suit, soft bowler hat; is remanded to the Hove Police Court till the 20th instant. The other who es- caped is of the following description : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather long dark hair, no whiskers, sup- posed to have a wound on the left 6ide of his head, having been knocked down with a stick ; left an old ragged black coat behind ; dressed in a dark shirt and trousers. Information to be given to the Superintendent, Lewes, or to Sergt. Baldwin, Preston, near Brighton.— Bow- street, November 16. Between 6 and 7* 30 p. m. on the 8th instant, the house of Francis Smith, of Ironbridge, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : an old silver verge Watch, No. 1001, with the name of ' Francis Smith,' engraved on the inside case ; two Razors ; and two calico Shirts. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, or to Superintendent Austin, County Constabulary Office, Madeley, Salop.— Bow- street, November 13. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Hanmer, Flintshire, during the night of the 9th instant: 1 silver Coffeepot. 1 ditto Teapot and Stand, ' D. D. C. T. L I. P.' under side of stand, crest— griffin's head, on one side. 1 ditto old- fashioned three- legged Cream Jug. 8 ditto Table Spoons, with crest— a griffin's head, and « J. P.' or ' R. G.' 6 ditto Forks, with same crest and initials. 1 pair of ditto Nutcrackers. 8 ditto Spoons, one broken, with griffin's head. 3 ditto sets of Knife, Fork, and Spoon ( children's). 1 boy's ditto drinking Cup, with ' H. L. L. 1859' on it. 1 ditto Soup Ladle. 1 ditto Butter Knife I ditto chistening Apostle Spoon, with twisted handle, silver gilt. 1 ditto Dessert Spoon, marked • M. II. L.' 1 ditto Pickle Fork and Spoon. 2 plated Table Spoons. 9 ditto Dessert ditto. 8 ditto breakfast Forks. Supposed by a man about 5 feet 7 inches high, middle age, dark complexion and hair, whiskers turning grey and meeting under the chin ; dressed in blue cloth overcoat, trousers, and glazed cap ; has the appearance of a dock loafer. Information to be given to Superintendent Bolton, Hanmer, Flintshire.— Bow- street, Noveinber 13. During the night of the 5th instant, the dwelling- houses of Robert Readhead and Sarah Ann Cross were broken and entered, and the following property stolen : a dark brown witney O ? ercoat, with bro in velvet collar, lined with sealskin, nearly new, a pair of men's Wellington Boots, newly heeled, a pair of men's Half- boots, nearly new, a pair of women's strong Boots, nearly new, and a quantity of Bread and Meat. Sup- posed by three men travelling with an old horse and cart, the horse in very bad condition, and no blinkers on the bridle Information to be given to Inspector Wells, Police Station, Winterton, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, November 11. Between 5- 30 and 10- 40 p. m. on the 8th instant, the dwelling- house of Henry Lee, of the Trench, fitter, was entered through a bedroom window, and the following money stolen therein : three Sovereigns ; six half Sovereigns, one split a little in the edge ; about £ 1 14s. 6d. in Silver ; and four Penny Pieces, one with two holes in. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, Salop, or to Sergeant Turner, Saint George's, near Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, November 11. Further information respecting the burglary committed at the house and shop of Benjamin Ockenden, at Breede, on the 22nd ultimo, aud advertised in the Police Gazette of the 28th ult. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of JOHN BRICCLY, alias SMITH, an Irishman, 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 6 inches high, light complexion, hair sandy coloured, proportionate make, and dressed in a pair of light cord trousers and white slop, when seen in Brighton on the 28th ult., supposed to be some of the stolen property. He was accompanied by a woman. Information to be given to Super- intendent Jeffery, Guestling, Hastings, or to the Chief Con- stable's Office, Lewes, Sussex.— Bow- street, November 11. About 12- 30 a. m. on the 5th instant, the dwelling- house of Captain Thursby, of Goldington, Beds, was broken and entered, and several articles of Plate and Jewellery were tied up in bundles ready to be carried off. Two men were seen to drive away from the place in a dogcart with a dark brown horse ; one of them was dressed in dark clothes, the other wore a grey overcoat, and had a red face, and both wore high bats. Information to be given at the County Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, November 11. Between 6 and 10 30 p. m. on the 8th instant, the George Hotel, Cleckheaton, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a tin Cashbox, twelve inches long, six inches wide, brass handle on top, two yellow stripes round lid ; a £ 20 Bank of England Note, No. 51646, Manchester, January, 1868 ; a £ 5 Note ; £ 23 in Gold ; twelve silver Tea Spoons, and a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' J. M. W.;' and six electro- plated Tea Spoons, marked ' W.;' the property of John Wilkinson. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford.— Bow- street, Nov. 11. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 5th instant, from a field at Warwick, a yellowish bay nag Horse, 6 years old, with a white mark all round his body, the property of Mr. John Woodward, maltster, Warwick. A reward and expenses will be paid on the recovery of the Horse and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Hickling, Warwick.— Bow- si., November 16. Stolen from a field in Selby on the 12th instant, a large high- bred she Donkey, clean in the leg, a mark on both knees, having been thrown down, colour light brown, white under the belly, and very free on the road, the property of William Rawlinson, of Selby, grocer. Information to be given to Superintendent Wardle, West Riding Constabulary, Selby.— Bow- street, November 16. Stolen from a stable at Oldbury, Worcestershire, on the 10th instant, a brown Horse, 16 hands high, 5 years old, the hair rubbed off the off thigh, a little white in the forehead, the property of Thomas Peasland, horsedealer. Information to be given to the Superintendent, Halesowen, or to Sergt. Simmonds, Police Station, Oldbury, near Birmingham. — Bow- street, Noveinber 16. Further information respecting the man suspected of stealing the Pony from Mangotsfield, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 9th instant: the pony has since been recovered, and a warrant obtained against WILLIAM PYLE, a native of Bideford, Devon, charged with stealing the same, he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers, meeting under tbe chin, middle size, and walks a little lame; dressed in an old dark- cap, brown over- coat, white slop under, and old knickerbockers ; goes about farms driving engines to thrashing machines. Information to be given to Superintendent Rawle, Police Station, Staple- hill, near Bristol.— Bow- street, November 16. Stolen from a field at Oakenshaw, in the township of Crofton, between 10 a. m. 12th and 10 a. m. 13th instant, a dark brown Horse, aged, about 16 hauds high, white star on fore- head, cut mark on near hind foot, no shoe on the off hind foot, thin tail, and in fair condition, the property of Thomas Williams, travelling showman. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Wakefield. • Bow street, November 16. Supposed stolen from a field at the Forest, in the parish of Kerry, in the county of Montgomery, on the night of the 8th instant : a grey mare Pony, aged, 12 hands high, a little white on the near fetlock, a scar on off Buttock, largejail, cut at point, the property of Mr. Richard Alsop. Information to be given to Police Constable Hudson, Kerry, or to the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown.— Bow- street, November 13. Apprehended at Guisbro' on the 11th instant, on suspicion of stealing a dark- roaned iron grey Mare, in good condition, about 14 or 15 hands high, switch tail, and appears to be about 10 years old, walks rather wide with the hind legs, and appears to be a little lame of the hind quarters, has a jack spavin on near side leg, and a sore on far side shoulder. JOHN DOBSON, who says he belongs to Hartlepool, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6J inches high, dark grey eyes, brown hair, tuft of hair on chin, and no whiskers, fresh complexion, round features, propor- tionate figure ; it appears he is well known at Hartlepool and Stockton. He states that he bought the Ma> e at Darlington on the 11th instant from a man named Atkinson, who stated he came from Stockton, aud cave him £ 19 for it, and exchanged it for one worth £ 3. There is a good Pad and Bridle with the Mare. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Prest, North Riding Constabulary, Guisbro', York- shire.— Bow- street, November 13. Stolen from a field in the borough of Bradford, on the 7th instant, an iron gre}' Pony, 6 years old, 15 hands high, hind hocks blistered, a small lump under the belly, and switch tail. £ 2 reward will be paid to any person giving such infor- mation as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the pony, on application to Chief Constable Grauham, Bradford.— Bow- street, Nov. 13. Stolen from Upperby, near Carlisle, on the 28th ultimo : ten Sheep, eight of them Cheviots, marked ' E. B.' on the near side; two Mules, marked with a red stripe down and three red stripes across the back. The property of Mr. John Johnston, Upperby. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Taylor, Constabulary Office, Carlisle.— Boio- street, No- vember 11. Stolen from a field at Leatherhead, Surrey, on the 8th instant, a bay nag brood Mare with black legs, aged, about 16 hands high, long tail, and rather lame in near fore leg. Also a strong made bay cob Gelding, sged, about 14i hands high, rather short tail, and chipped kneed. A reward" of £ 5 will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to their recovery, and conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Page. Stolen on the 2nd instant, from Burnham Dcepdale, a black mare Pony, 2 years old, two brands on the shoulder in the shape of a shoe, and one under the saddle, the property of Horace Arter. Information to be given to Superintendent Rose, Docking, King's Lynn, Norfolk.— Bow- street, Nov, H. 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. November 16. Stolen from a field at Horseley Heath, Tipton, on the night of the 5th inst., two Cows, of the following description : one red and white, the other white, one marked wi h tour cuts between the hip ami tail on the rump, and cropped tails, Irish breed. Information to be given to Inspector Phair, Police Office, Tipton, or to Mr. Sherwood, butcher, llorseley Heath, Tipton.— Bow- street, November 11. LAHCSNYAND EMBEZZLEMENT Absconded from Leeds on the 3rd instant, MAJOR LAWTON, a collier, charged with embezzling money belong- ing to a friendly society, ot which he was secretary. He is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slenderly made, light hair and whiskers, rather long, thin pale face ; dressed in mixture suit and hat. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bono- nreet, November 10. On the 12th instant, GEORGE REES. clerk, absconded from Middlewich, with three £ i00 Bank of England Notes, the property of the Cheshire Amalgamated Salt Works Company, Limited, Winsford, Cheshire ; he is 52 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, rather slight, hair turning grey, dark whiskers, no moustache or beard ; dressed when he left home in a suit of black, with trock coat. The numbers of the two notes not cashed are V | L 01823 and V | L 07099, issued at Liverpool. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender. Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Middlewich.— Bow- sireet, November 16. Absconded on the 4th instant, from his employer, Albion- road, Woolwich, embezzling £ 2 4s. 6d., a youth, 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in black, cloth suit and low- crowned hat, and of respectable appearance. — Metropolitan Police, R Division, November 16. Stolen from the band Toom of the 4th Battalion, Prince Consort's Rifle Brigade, about 10 a. m. on the 10th instant : a pair of ammunition Boots, marked ' 78,' inside; a pair of elastic- side Boots, new ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, in good condition, but have been repaired. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, lost his front teeth, and says he has been in the 7th 1? usiliers ; dressed in old drab tweed trousers, mended at the knees, dirty old drab shooting jacket, dirty drab felt hat, blue scarf with white collar, and when last seen had on a new pair of elastic side boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Oldmeadow, County Police Office, Egerton- street, Chester.— Bow- street, November 13. Stolen from a bed- room in a dwelling- house in the city of Salisbury, between 7 and 11 a. m. on the 11th instant, the pro- perty ot Thomas Osmond : a pair of gold Eye- glasses ; an Eye- glass, gold washed, gold chain attached ; two MourniDg Rings; a cornelian Ring, ' Jane' on it; a coral ditto, several gold ditto ; three gold Brooches, one with a view of Salisbury Cathedral on it, one with a female holding something in her hand, the other set with a violet coloured stone and pearls; some other ditto, several pairs of gold Ear- drops ; a book with red cover, title ' Maria Monk ;' and about £ 3 16s. in Money. By a man about 22 years of age, 5 feet 11 inct es high, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, fair complexion, very high forehead, and dressed in a fashionable dark jacket and vest, dark ribbed mixture trousers, fashionable hat with wide brim and binding, red necktie, and old balmoral boots, elastic and soles much worn ; he represented that he was going to work for a jeweller, and that he was a polisher of diamonds ; he obtained lodgings in the house and absconded on the 11th iDst. Information to be given to Superintendent White, City Police Station, Salisbury.— Bow- street, November 13. Description of WILLIAM POOL, a clerk, who absconded from the service of the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway, at Stewart's- lane Goods Station, Batttirsea, charged with em- bezzling the sum ot £ 36 14s. 3d. : he is 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair, cut short, whiskers meeting under the chin, chin dark when shaved, broad features, daik e> ye% one pockmark on centie of torehead a scar on upper lip, ' W. P.' in blue ink on leftatm ; he was 14 years in the service of a carrier at Hereford. Ross, Pontypool, and Abergavenny, after- wards landlord of the George Hotel, Abergavenny, and was last seen at 9 a. m. the 2nd ultimo, at the above Station. In- formation to be given to Inspector Moores, London, Chatham, and Dover Railway, Victoria Station, Pimlico, Loudon.— Bow- street, November 13. Stolen at Shipley on the 9th instant, a black cloth Coat, one pocket iuside each skirt, one ditto outside, with lids, and raised seams, and a black and white piaie Vest, light b: o\ vn buttons, second from top lost, both nearly new. By a lodger, a carter, 22 years of age, 5 lent 5 inches high, slender, dark brown hair, tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in white smock, cord trousers, and Btrong lace- up boots. Stolen at Walsall, a silver lever Watch, consular case, silver dial, gold figures, No. 6106, ' John Thomas' engraved inside case By a man, 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin, light curly hair, sandy moustache, and nose a little deformed ; dressed in a light grey overcoat, grey mixture waistcoat, black cloth trousers, and soft BLACK billycock hat; he travels with a circus, lnfoiuia ion to be given to the Chiet of the Borough Police, Walsall, staffordshire.— Bow- street, NoroemJ/ er 11. Description of PETER BROWN, alias BREWSTER, a collier, charged with stealing a number of Fowls ( recovered) from Keresforth- hill, near Barusley, on the 21st ultilno : he is about 46 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, dark com- plexion, brown hair turning grey, no whiskers, slightly pock- pitted, and out mark on back of left hand; a native of St. Helens or Wigan; dressed in flannel jacket, black cloth waistcoat, dark brown mixture trousers, blucher shoes, and soft billycock hat, had with him a black cloth dress coat. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, Police Office, Barnsley, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 11. Absconded on the 5th instant, from the School of Art, Miller's- lane, Vauxhall, stealing a Cheejue for £ 6 10a. on the London and Westminster Bank", drawn ' by Mr. Thompson : a man, 20 year3 of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fair com- plexion, light tiair, and full face ; dressed in blue pea jacket, light trousers, and Prince of Wales hat.—' Metropolitan Police, L Division, November 11. good looking, and well built; dressed in a fashionable blue pea jacket, dark trousers and vest, and low felt hat ; he is a native of Maybole, or Carmichael, Ayr, Scotland, and has been employed as a travelling Sootch draper, at Sunderland, Hastings, King's Lynn, and Brighton, and left the latter place four weeks ago, he was convicted for telony at Sunderland in 1866, and sentenced to 6 months hard labour. £ 2 reward will be given for his apprehension. Absoonded since the 24th ult., charged with embezzling £ C0, the monies of his employer, iron merchant, Bankside : a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet (> 4 inches high, fair complexion, and light moustache ; dressed In dark coat and vest, and light trousers.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, November 11. Absconded from Ipswich on the 8th instant, charged with stealing a German silver Watch and German silver Guard ; also a quantity of shoemakers' Tools, namely : four double Irons, a furepait Iron, three Rasps, a case of Files, a pair of Nippers, a Hammer, a glaze Iron, and other tools. WILLIAM McINTOSH, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, auburn hair, cut very short, sanely moustache ; dressed in an old hrown cloth coat, Isght mixed trousers, old dark vest, roll collar, blue clotli cap ; walks lame ; n a shoemaker by trade, and a native of Scotland. Information to be given to- Head Constable Mason, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 11. FELONIES ( Not otherwise described J. Stolen from Isfield Church, between the 1st and 7th inst., the property of the Rev. Thomas William Weare, of the parish of Isfield, a church Service, dark blue morocco cover, gilt clasp, with II.
