Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving nformation respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to tfPe POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to V. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *.* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As HO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Ma London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. Stolen from the person at Newport Pagnell, Bucks, on the 20th instant, during the Steeple Chases, a double cased gold hunting Watch, capped and jewelled, glass loose, seconds hand deficient, the property of William Broyton, of Buckingham, licensed hawker. Also a gold Geneva hunting Watch, marked A. W. P. J.' on the outer case, the property of A. W. P. Jervis, Esq., of Sherington. Information to be given to Super- intendent Hedley, Fenny Stratford, or Inspector Hall, Newport Pagnell.— Bow- street, March 23. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found in Ansley Tunnel, of the Midland Railway, in the parish of Nuneaton, the dead body of a male child about a month old, the body was stripped of clothing, and wrapped in brown paper, a piece of new black oilcloth was tied tightly over the mouth, the whole tied with thin new twine ; the body appeared to have been dead more than 24 hours, and was supposed to have been thrown from the train running from Leicester to Birmingham, calling at Nuneaton at 3 31 p. m ;. the child appeared to have been suffocated, an inquest has been opened, and stands adjoined till the 8th April. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warkickshire. — Bow- street, March 30. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING About half- past 2 a. m. on the 20th instant, a stack of wheat straw, the produce of about 8 acres, was discovered to be on fire, in the stack yard belonging fo Mr. F. Winter, at the township of Bonwick, in the East Riding of York, and the whole was consumed. Supposed by some tramp, who had been sleeping in the same, as a small bundle tied to the end of a stick was found in a ditch adjoining the stackyard, and the marks as if some person had got over the fence ( having dropped the bundle whilst crossing the ditch) were observed. In the bundle, which was tied up in an old dirty cotton handkerchief, red and white small check pattern, much faded, was an unbleached calico shirt, nearly new, but in a very filthy dirty state, as if it had been worn for a length or time ; also a short clay tobacco pipe, and a few matches. Information to be given to Superintendent Wright, East Riding Constabulary Station, Leven, near Beverley, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., March 23. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- 1 stolen from the person on the Cheltenham race course, on the 26th instant, a f- plate English Bilver lever Watch, maker Arthur Jack, Cheltenham, No. 77000 ; and a double- case silver Geneva Watch, ' No. 238,' inside the second case, and the letters ' J. B.' engraved on the back. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Cheltenham.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen from the person of Mrs. Hannah Hannam, of Birsturth, on the 27th instant, whilst standing in the Otley market- place, a drab leather Purse, lined with red leather, with steel clasp, containing 3 Sovereigns, 1 half Sovereign, and about 17s. in Silver. Also stolen from the person of Miss Elizabeth Whitaker, of Snowden, at the same time and place, a brown leather Purse, blue silk fringe round the edge, with steel clasp, containing 1 half Sovereign, 1 half Crown, 3 Florins, and about 16s. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, Police Office, Otley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen on the 25th instant, from the person'of a gentleman, while at Beeston Station, Cheshire, a gold lever hunting Watch, No. 10364, maker ' Charles Goodwin, 6a, Edgeware- road, London,' has the owner's name engravedjon the inside case, also a coat of arms on the back— a leopard holding a palm leaf in its right paw, a monogram underneath. Any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watch, shall receive £ 10 reward, on application to Chief Constable Palin, Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 30. Stolen from the person at Hindley, whilst asleep in the Lord Nelson Public house, a patent lever silver Watch, No. 35361, maker Tognion, Bolton, a small brass Chain attached, with two Keys, and a foreign Coin, supposed to be Egyptian. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Ellison, Pemberton, new Wigau.— Bow- street, March 25. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 1 and 6 a. m. on the 20th instant, a shoemaker's shop in Eglwvsfach, was broken into and a pair of Wellington Boots, a pair of Watertights, a pair of half Watertights, a pair of half Boots, a pair of elastic side Boots, and a pair of half Boots of a woman's size, all quite new, were stolen. They have been traced to the possession of two trampp, one of whom is in custody at Llanrwst, and gives the name of WILLIAM JOHNSON, alias TIP, a native of Addison- street, Liverpool, but has been staying at a common lodging- house for the last five weeks in Mount- street, Wrexham ; the other is still at large, having made his escape with two pairs of the stolen boots, the Wellington and strong new watertight, and is sup- posed to be making his way towards Wrexham : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers, meeting under the chin, has lost two of his upper front teeth, and dresssad in a dark cap, old blue pilot cloth top coat, light fustian trousers, and wore, at the time he escaped, the above- mentioned watertights ; he is well known throughout North and South Wales, in all the common tramps' lodging- houses ; he speaks with an Irish accent, and goes by the name of JACK. He can be identified. £ 1 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender, and recovery of the property. Between 12 midnight and 6 a. m. on the 29( h instant, dwelling- houses in Harmer- street, Gravesend, were broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a silver Cup, ' Presented to Captn. McKeown, 1st K. A. V.,' inside ' Presented by Library Committte;' a silver Snuff Box, • Captn. McKeown' engraved on lid; fourteen silver Tea Spoons, engraved ' E. H. M. K. E.,' some plain; four silver Table ditto, ' T. E. P.' eriges embossed ; four silver Dessert ditto, one plain, three ' J. E. M. N. four silver Salt ditto ; two silver Mustard ditto, ' E. C. J. E M. N. ;' a silver Egg ditto, ' M. K. E. ;' two silver Sugar Tongs, one plain, one ' J. E. M. N.;' a silver Caddy Spoon ; a silver Pickle Fork ; a silver Caustic Case : a silver Spatula ; a silver Catheter with Probes ; a meerschaum Pipe ; a dark blue sac Coat, lined with violet check flannel; and a dark braided ditto. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent White, Town Hall, Gravesend.— Bow- street, March 30. Description of a man charged with housebreaking near Essenden, Herts, on the 26th instant, aDd stealing a Coat, Waistcoat, and Handkerchief, which lie pawned the same day at the shop of Mr. Phillips, Hertford, in the name of Jordan, and will probably have the ticket in his possession; an old cotton Handkerchief, marked ' M. A. Austin,' was also stolen : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, and dirty appearance ; dressed in dark cloth coat and a stitched willy hat; had been begging in the neigh- bourhood, and stated that he was a gardener out of employ. Information to be given to Inspector HuDt, Rural Police, Hertford .— Bow- street, March 30. Between 1 a. m. and 6 a. m. on the 24th instant, the dwell- ing- house of Captain L. Browell, in the parish of Millbrook, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : one large silver Cruet Stand, crest— eagle and anchor, two silver Cruet Tops, two small silver fish Knives, two silver Muffineers, ten silver wine Lables. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Stannard, Bitterne, or to Sergeant Ede, Police Station, Shirley, Hants.— Bow- street, March 30. Between 10 p. m. on the 20th and 6 a. m. on the 27th inst., the house of Mr. Edwards, of Merllyn, near Ruthin, was entered, and the following articles, the property of the workman, stolen therein : a dark tweed shooting Coat, pockets at the sides, and a pocket inside the left breast, Trousers and Vest of the same material, the latter without collar, and buttons up to the throat, two cotton Handkerchiefs, one black and red, the other red and white, a double cased German silver Watch, strong steel Chain, with two Keys and two Seals attached, one of the seals steel, the other brass with impression of a ship under sail. Supposed by a youth, about 19 years of age, 6 feet 4 or 5 inches high, black hair, no whiskers, pale complexion, long nose, thick lips ; dressed in black frock coat, jimcrow hat, and short leggings. Information to be given to Chief Constable Denman, Ruthin, Denbighshire.— Boa- street, March 30. Between 12 midnight and 5 a. m. on the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of the Rev. W. P. Hulton, of Weston, parish of St. Mary's Extra, was burglariously broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein: two Teapots, a Coffeepot, a Cruet Stand, Top of Cruet and Sifter, a pair of Candlesticks, sixteen Table Spoons, twelve large Forks, twelve small ditto, a Soup Ladle, a Fish Slice, two Gravy Spoons, two Skewers, a pair of Sugar Tongs, a Butter Knife, thirteen Tea Spoons, six Salt ditto, a Cream Jug, a Sugar Sifter, four Sauce Ladles, two Wiae Labels, two Inkstands, a Candlestick, a small Box, a Tray, and a Taper Box— all silver, and most of them with crest— a griffin's head ; also seven gold Seals. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Stannard, Hants Constabulary, Bitterne, or at any of the Hants Constabulary Stations.— Bow street, March 27. Between 11 p. m. on the 24 » h and 6 a. m. on the following morning, the dwelling- house of Edward Mayes, Esq., J. P., Portland- terrace, Southampton, was burglariously entered and the following property stolen therein : 6 silver egg Spoons ; 1 caddy do.; 1 silver Muffineer ; 2 silver Tops of mustard and pepper; 1 Castor ; 1 small silver Knife; 2 dark Oxford mixture great Coats ; 1 black cloth great Coat; 1 silver Mug; 1 silver tea Spoon, marked ' I. R. P.;' 1 pair of youth's Boots, elastic sides, and 7s. 6d. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Breary, Southampton.— Bow- slreet, March 27. Between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 23rd instant, the dwelling- house and shop of Robert Back, watchmaker, sitnate in Narrow Bridge- street, Peterborough, was entered by using a skeleton key, during the absence of the inmates, and the following property stolen therein : 2 silver hunting Levers, Nos. 7515 and 47688, maker ' R Back ' on the latter; 1 open- face Lever, No. 28785, maker ' R. Back' and engine on dial; 3 consular Levers, Nos. 7389, 7524 and 7499 ; 1 Lever, silver dial, No. 7196; 5 silver Genevas, Nos. 10738, 19743, 6640, 6636 and 5014 ; 1 Geneva, silver dial, No. 43506 ; 1 hunting Geneva, No. 87018; 1 silver Verge, pair- case, No. 47879, maker R. Back, Peterborough ; and 6everal other Lever and Verge Watches; several gold Chains, gold Alberts, and silver Alberts. Information to be given to Inspector Brooke, Con- stabulary Office, Peterborough.— Bow- street, March 27. Between 10 a. m. and 5 p. m. on the 23rd instant, a dwelling hou~ e at Wall, in the parish of Shenstone, was entered and the following property stolen therein : a pair of blsok cloth Trousers, tw.> black satin Vesta, a b'- jck cloth Vest, a pair of light coloured woollen cord Breeches, two blue plaid silk Handkerchiefs and a Razor ; a man about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout made, sandy beard, hair cut very short; dressed in a blue slop, and dark cap, had the appearance of a low butcher or tramp was seen near the houBe, and is suspected. Information to be given to Superintendent Aswell, Burton on- Trent, or to S- rgeant Bason, Police Station, Shenstone, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 27. The public- house of Mr. Hugh Donaghy, Marlborough- street, Whitehaven, was broken and entered on the night of the 22nd instant, and the following articles stolen therein : a patent silver lever Watch, maker John Scott, Whitehaven, No. 60719, with heavy silver guard Chain, a fourpenny Piece, an old Ring of a gold watch, and a common brass Key attached, 2s. in Silver, and l$ d. in Copper. Information to be given to Superintendent Little. Whitehaven, or to the County Chief Constable, Carlisle.— Bow- street, March 25. Between 12 non on the 23rd and 6 a. m. on the 24th inst., the dwelling- house of A. Kesselridge, Esq., merchant, 8, Glen- arthur- teriace, Cecil- st,, Moss- side, near Rusholme, was bur- glariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : a Teapot, chased pattern, dent on one side ; a Sugar Basin, a Cream Jug, chased and gilt inside, seven Tea Spoons, four Table ditto, six Dessert ditto, six Dessert Forks, two large Forks, a Butter Knife, two Sauce Ladles, two Salt Spoons, a pair of Sugar Tongs, all electro- plated ; a silver Table Spoon, marked ' A K.;' a small Cruet Stand, a velvet and pilot Table Cover, a damask ditto, a Napkin, a gentleman's black cloth Overcoat, with two pockets inside breast, and two outside skirt; a gentle- tleman's brown cloth Overcoat, two pockets inside breast, and two outside skirt; two pairs of gentlemen's elastic- side Boots, nearly new, one pair double soled ; two pairs of lady's ditto, two short muslin window Curtains, two Table Covers to match, and two muslin Covers for Drawers. Information to be given to the Superintendent of the County Police, Old Trafford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 25. On the night of the 19th instant, Quedgley House, near Gloucester, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : two old fashioned ornamented silver drawing- room Candlesticks, with square tops and bottoms, about one foot in length, one weighing 25 and the other 26 ounces ; a small silver filagree Candlestick, about 8 inches high, round or oval bottom, and representing a sailor holding a taper. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and full value will also be given for any part of the property recovered. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester.— Bow- street, March 23. On the night of the 21st instant, Whiteley Wood Hall, the residence of Samuel Plimsoll, Esq., was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : 2 old- fashioned silver Teipots, one plain, the other having a small border round the lid. 1 old- fashioned silver Coffee Pot, with a border round the top, the knob representing a pine apple. 1 silver Toast Rack, ivy leaf and berry pattern. 2 silver Gravy Spo > ns, plain pattern. 2 silver Soup Ladles, plain pattern. 1 silver soup Ladle, buffalo haft. 4 silver Table Spoons. 4 silver salt Spoons, cockle shell pattern. 6 silver dessert Spoons. 1 silver c iddy Spoon. 1 silver sugar Crusher. 1 dozen silver Tea Spoons, having the letter • R.' engraved thereon. 2 POLICE GAZETTE. J dozen dessert Knives and forks, ivory handles. 1 carving Knife and Fork. Most of the articles are marked with Mr. Plimsoll's crest— Eagle and snake. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Offices, Sheffield.— Bow- st., March 23. Between 9 and 11 a. m. on the 10th instant, the cottage of William White, labourer, situate at Rangeworthy, Glouces- tershire, was broken and entered during the absence of the inmate?, and the following property stolen therein: a black cloth Coat, with velvet collar, pockets at the sides without flaps, and one breast pocket outside ; a black cloth Vest, with black bone buttons ; a very old thin Sixpence ; a very old silver Coin, supposed to be an eighteenpenny piece; and 6s. in Money. Supposed by a tramp who was seen near the house about the time mentioned : from 22 to 26 years of age, about 6 feet 8 inches high, light sandy complexion, rather full faco ; dressed in a rough dark cloth round coat and cloth cap. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field at Leintwardine, Herefordshire, on the night of the 26th instant, an aged iron grey coloured cart Horse, about 16 hands high, dark head with star on the fore- head, a good deal o' white on the breast from the collar, and a little white on one, if not the both hind legs, goes very wide behind when walking, dark mane and tail, and has got what is termed the riff causing a portion of the hair to be rubbed off his mane and tail, very long tail, an drather lean in condition ; the horse was traced in the direction of Bishops Castle. Shropshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Dykes, Leominster, to Sergeant Bound, Police Station, Wigmore, or to Police Constable Jones, Constabulary Station, Leintwardine, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, March 30. Absconded from Romsey, on the 22nd instant, charged with stealing two Lambs ( since recovered), the property of T. Wiltshire, a man of the following description : about 36 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, lair complexion, hair rather short, whiskers shaved off, and walks ereot; dressed in a long dirty white slop, dirty cord or fustian trousers, old blucher boots without nails, and donkey bat, had with him an old brown velveteen jacket; has the appearance of a drover, and frequents low beer houses and common lodging houses. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent White, Hants Con- stabulary, Roipeey.— Bots- tireet, March 27. Stolen on the ni„- ht of the 24th instant, from a stable t Golden Lands Farm, Dorking, the property of Mr. James Rose B dark brown Mare, 14 hands high, white blaze down the fate, tail cut square at the hocks, and in good condition ; a light spring Cart, painted dark, with double step on near side, a rim round the inside of the hind part of the cart, worn awaj bs milk cans : and a set of light cart harness. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension of tbe offender or offenders, shall, on conviction, receive £ 10 from the Bear Green Prosecution Society, and £ 10 from Mr. James Rose. Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- strut, March 27. Stolen on the night of the 23rd instant, from the parish of Crick, the property of Mr. Thomas Morris, a half bred brown Mare, aged, about 14J bauds high, white blaze down face, very full nostril", one ot the hind fetlocks white, switch tail, and in good condition ; the mare has beeu traced as far as Whitacre. near Nuneaton, a man with a light coat was riding the same on the uioming of the 24th inst. Whoever will give such infor- rnation as shall lead to lhe recovery of the horse aud the appre hension of the offender or offenders, will receive £ 2 reward. Information to be given to Superintendent Bailie, Weedon, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen on the 23rd instant, from Pownall Fee, near Macclesfield, Cheshire, 2 Cowg, one a light roan colour, the other red and white, about 6 or 7 years old eacb, the property of Nathaniel Priestner, of Bollin Fee, butcher: by Bernard Divine, a butcher's assistant, a native of Macclesfield, 38 years of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, and brown eyes; has been iu the habit of frequenting races throughout Eugland, and is well known among the low betting men. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Macclesfield, or to Sergeant Garner, Police Station, Wilmslow, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen on the 9th inst., from Gwernypwll, near Newtown, a dark brown entire Donkey, mane cut short ( 1^ inch) along the neck, tail cut square, and in fair condition,— supposed by a man about 46 years of age, about 6 feet 4 or 6 inches high, stout make, and dark hair and whiskers. He was seen on the 17th at Newcastle, collecting rags and rabbit skins, in company with a boy, and had the donkey in his possession; he was then going in the direction of Clun or Bishops Castle. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Danily, Police Office, Newtown, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, March 27. Stolen from the New Mills, near Ruyton, of the Eleven Towns, about the 6th ult„ ten Sheep of the South Down breed, seven of them marked T. M., on the near side, the other three marked B. on near side, the whole marked with the figure 4, on near Bhoulder, the property of Mr. Richard Oakeley, New Mills, Shropshire. Information to be given to Detective Sergeant Dovey, West Felton, Salop.— Bow- st., March 27. Stolen from a field near Brock Mill, in the township of Haigh, sometime between 6 p. m. <> n the 19th and 8 a. m. on the 21st instant, a Sheep, which had been slaughtered in the field, as the head, hide, and entrails were found there : the property of Samuel Alker, of Haigh, farmer. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellison, Pemberton, near Wigan. — Bow- street, March 26. Stolen from Crick, Northamptonshire, on the night of the 23rd instant, a half bred brown Mare, aged, about 16 hands high, pinched on tbe shoulders, white blaze down face. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Bailie, Weedon, North- amptonshire.— Bow- street, Match 26, Stolen on the night of the 19th instant, from a field in the parish of Saddington, Leicestershire, a light brown half bred Mare, 9 jears old, about 16 hauds high, small white star on forehead, black legs, mane, and tail, iu low condition, rough coat, near hind foot worn down very much at the toe, by trip- ping the ground, the property of Thomas Clarke, of Saddington, grazier. Information to be given to Superintendent Iliffe, Constabulary Station, Market Harborough.— Bow- st., Mar. 26. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Further information respecting the two boys, WILLIAM DENTON and WILLIAM JONES, who escaped from the Weston Reformatory, on the 18th instant, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 20th instant. William Denton has been apprehended, and William Jones, alias William Thurley, is still at large, he was at Hertford on the 21st instant, and traced on the London- road, he was then wearing cord trousers, with a piece cut out above seat, where reformatory mark ' W. R. S.' had been stamped, cord vest, and cori cap minus the peak, two slops, one white, and one blue, which he had exchanged for his cord jacket: he is about 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, a scar from bleeding inside right elbow, three brown spots on left cheek, small brown spot near inner corner of left eye, sullen appearancp, and is very near sighted, his father goes by the name of Thurley, and is at work on a railway near Peckham, London, where it is supposed he will make for. £ 1 reward and all reasonable expenses will be paid for his apprehension.
