CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, tlicir Appearance, Dress, and other viarhs of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular ivhich may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering than. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving nformation respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made gnd sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING, Absconded from Birstal, near Leeds, on the 21st instant, charged with unlawlullv wounding William Burnell, at Birstal,: on tbe 20ih instant: THOMAS CAHALAN, a collier, and another man ( name unknown). Cahalan is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches nigh, pale complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, and smart looking ; dressed in corduroy jacket, black cloth trouners, torn across the knee, black cloth vest, and shoes with brass eyelet holes. The other man is about 23 or 24 yrs. of age, 5 feet 4 or 6 inches high, thick set, and red hair. In- formation to l> e given to Superintendent Martin, West Riding Constabulary, Dewsbury.— Bow- street, October 28. On the night of the 10th August last, s. me persons let a loaded truck out of a siding on the Rhymney Railway, Glamorganshire, which ran down the line, and killed a man named Lewis Jones, at ' fir Phil, Two Irishmen aresuspicted, who woiked at the coke ovens at Tir Phil, and who have since absconded : one is about 30 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 6 inches high, light complexion, full round face, light brown hair, and whiskers round the chin, a native of Skull, in the county of Cork ; dressed in a white slop, moleskin trousers, and bowler hat ; he bus a wife aud three children, who left last week for Stockton, where he is supposed to have gone : the other is a native of the county of Cork, 27 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, long featuies, dark complexion snd hair, whiskers round the cliia ; dressed in a white slop, cord trousers, and cloth csp. They are likely to be found at coke works. £ 20 reward will j be paid by the Rhymney Railway Company to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Wrenn, Constabulary Office, Merthyr Tydvil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, October 23. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Robert Riley, at Stafford, between 10 p. m. on the 21st, and 2- 30 a. m. on the 24th inst: two £ 10 Bank of England Notes. Nos. 90826 and 80024, and both dated Birmingham, 19th August, 1865, £ 24 10s. in Gold, and a brown holland Purse. Information to be given to Super- intendent Crisp, Guildhall, Stafford, or at any of the County Police Station?.— Bow- street, October 28. Stolen from the person of Samuel Marks, on the highway between Chard and Chardstock, on the night of the 23rd inst. : a Cheque for £ 10 from Point de Galle to Oriental Bank Corporation, London, payable to Rev. C. Woodcock ; a Cheque for £ 2 from Bermuda, signed F. W. Nixon, Lieut., payable to Rev. C. Woodcock, on Messrs. Cox & Co., army agents, London ; a Post Office Order for £ 3 16s., payable at Chard, signed M. L. Woodcock ; two Sovereigns, and some silver. By three men. one middle aged ; dressed in a light' coat, low crowned black hat, dark vest, and trousers ; another from 20 to 25 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, stout; dressed in a high box hat, and dark trousers ; and the other about 25 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes, and low crowned hat. Stolen from the person of James May, at Sandletord, near Newbury, Berks : a silver Geneva Watch, with seconds hand, No. 14879. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on Newmarket Rtca Course: a gold chronometer hunting Watch, maker Williams, Strand, London. Information to be given to Inspector Steggles, Newmarket, West Suffolk.— Bow- street, October 26. Stolen by two men, from the person of My. Isaac Carter, farmer, of Brownsover, between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 19th inst., on the foot road leading from Rugby to Brownsover, an ( pen- face silver lever Watch, with sunk seconds, engine- turned cases, maker Isaac Wilkinson, Leicester, No. 4726 ; 1 Sovereign ; some Silver ; a Pocket Book, containing a few receipt and postage Stamps, and other memoranda ; a buck horn pocket Knite, a blade at each end ; a bunch of 6 Keys ; and a single Key. Information to be given to Superintendent Wild, Rugby.— Bmo- street, October 23. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Cardiff, on the night of the 20th instant, a silver lever Watch, has been a double- cased one but the cmtte of the front case has been cut out, also a gold Albert with an old Guineaattachid. Stolen from a gentleman on tile race course at Hereford, on the 17th instant, a sma! l gold repeater Watch, gold face, the cases worn very tbin, maker Jefferson, Bruton- street. In- formation to be given fo Superintendent Davies, Hereford.— Bow- street, October 23. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING- On the night of the 17th instant, a fire broke out upon the premises of Mr. Thomas Brightman, of Little Staughton, which consumed a large quantity of farm Produce, steam Engines, and other agricultural Implements, aud it is supposed to be the act of an incendiary. £ 20 reward will be paid by Mr. Brightman, to any person who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Brightman, Little Staughton, or to Superintendent Carruthers, Sharnbrook, Beds.— Bow- st., October 28. On the 18th instant, at 10 p. m., an attempt was made to set fire to the City Police Station, Chester, by throwing upon the roof thereof a quantity of explosive ma'erial known as Greek Fire. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Corporation of Chester to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Description of JAMES JELF, a native of Cheltenham, charged with forgit g a Cheque for £ 43 10s. on the Tewkesbury Branch of the Gloucestershire Banking Company, on tbe 16th instant: 22 years of age, about 6 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and eyes, sallow complexion, cut on middle joint of right little finger, which is crooked ; he has a relative residing in Bir- mingham, where he is supposed to have gone. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Constabulary Office, Chelten- ham, or 10 Sergeant Whitman, Police Station, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 23. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the night of the 24th instant, the laundry and harcess room at New House Farm, iu the parish of Ewhurst, Sussex, was broken into, and srolen therein : two white flannel Shirts, marked on the front ' F. Webster a rough black cloth Over- coat, two pockets outside, at d striped lining ; a black cloth monkey Jacket, plaid lining ; a lignt cord Waistcat; and a brass Mortar. Information to be t iven at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or tD Deputy Ctiief Constable Thompson, Court House, Battle, Sussex.— Bou- slrect, October 28. Between 10 p. m. on the 25th, aid 6 a. m. on the 26th instant, the St. Helen's Mills, at Almondbury, near Hudders- field, were broken and entered, and stolen therein, belonging to R. Scott and Co., Manufacturers : 50 lbs. of white woollen Yarn, in a greasy state ; 45 lbs of white woollen Yarn, twisted; 2 pieces of Bedford woollen Cord, in an unfinished state, 28 in. wide, one piece narrow and tbe other broid ribbed, the narrow headed at both ends, and the broad headed at oue end. Infor- mation to be given to Supeiinteiideut Heaton, West Riding Constabulary, Huddersfield.— Bow- street, October 28. On the night of the 25th instant, a shoemaker's shop at Maesbury Marsh, in the parish of Oswestry, county of Salop, was broken into and stolen therein : a pair of men's strong watertight, Boots, square tacks in heels and toes, and hobs crossways in tbe middle; a pair of men's light Boots, brass eyelet hole ( the whole of the eyelets were not in), the lasts were in them ; a pair of men's Blucher Boots, large size, spiigs in the heels and foreparts, and part of tbe lasts in them ; three pairs of Boots, to fit boys from 10 to 14 years of age ; an old black cloth Jacket; and a white Slop, band round waist, aud mended at the cuffs. Supposed by tiamps. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- slreet, October 28. Stolen, by means of burglary, on tbe mornirg of the 25th instant, from the shop of Mr. Henry Cousens, Terminus road, Eastbourne, four ladies' leather Bags; three fancy ditto, one blue silk with gilt snap ; oue ditto, drab with gilt studs; one ditto, with coloured silk ; a flat Case with Scissors, & c. ; a scissors, & c.; a blue Work- case ; two Russia leather Purses ; twenty- two leather Purses; a quantity of Pen- knives and Scissors; a quantity of Corkscrews, & c.; a Land's patent ditto; five ladies' Spectacle cases with gilt chains; two small Pincushions with white flowers; four velvet ditto; yard Measures, Needle- cases, Bnd various other articles. Informa- tion to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes ; to Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham ; or to Sergeant Verrall, Eastbourne, Sussex.— Bow- street, October 28. Daring the afternoon of the 23rd instant, the dwelling- house of Edward Thomas, of Wilkesley Lodge, Shavington Park, Cheshire, was broken into, and stolen therein : a blue witney Overcoat, two pockets outside, one inside, and a small ticket pocket outside, lined with blue and red plaid ; a black cloth Coat ; a dark grey Vest, roll collar, and black bone buttons; a pair of dark TrouserB with light stripes ; and a pair of lace- up B » ots with brass eyelet- holes. Supposed by two tramps : one had whiskers cut very close, the other baa Done: both were dressed in monkey jackets, dark trousers, and billycock hats. Information to be given to Superintendent Layton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, October 25. During the night of the 22nd inst., tbe house of Mr. Geo. Stratton, near Spennymoor, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver drinking Mug, marked ' T. H. M. Stratton a silver punch Ladle, with a Queen Anne shilling at the bottom, and the name of ' Glitheroe ' inscribed ; six silver tea Spoons aud silver sugar Tongs, marked ' S.;' a silver Inkstand, with inscription, ' Presented to George Stratton,' & c.; an electro- plated cake Basket ; a ditto card Basket; a ditto sugar Bowl ; an ancient plated Tankard, with two handles ; a silver snuff Box, lined with gold, inscription ' G. O. Stratton ;' a pair of silver Eyeglasses ; and a black oak tea Caddy, which has since been found in a field. A joiner's stroDg morticing Chisel was found in the room. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, Bishop Auckland, Durham.— Bow- street, October 26. Stolan on the 21st instant, at 0 p. m., by throwing a stone at the Bbop window of Mr. Silvani's, jeweller, King's road, Brighton, a Bracelet formed of two gold snakes, the two heads cross at the top with dark blue enamel set with diamonds. By a short young man, dressed in dark clothes and cap. A reward of £ 25 will be paid for the apprehension of the offender and recovery of tie property. " Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town- hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, Oct. 23. Between 10 p. m. on the 19xh instant and 6 the fol- lowing morning, the dwelling- house of Ann Thomas Farmer, of the township of Aldersey, Cheshire, was broken into and the following property stoltn theiefrom: a pair of woman's Boats, black cloth tops, lace up the side; a pair of gill's strong Boots, brass eyelet holes; a pair of men's strong water- tight, Boots, newly soled ; a black low crowned Hat, a cotton Umbrella, a pair of Scisssors, a Ham, 10 lbs. of Cheese, and a Loaf of Bresd. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Constabulary Station, Tattenball, Cheshire.— Bow- street, October 23. The dwelling- house of Elizabeth Cranfield, of Chatteris, in the Isle of Ely, was broken and entered between 6 and 9 p. m. ou the 29tU instant, and stolen therein : about £ 40 in Gold and Silver, part of the gold was in a small round brown case, about 6 inches long, aud shutting up like a needle case, and is supposed to be made of leather with cork ends, about £ 5 in gold was in a new double jean purse, and the lest of the Gold and Silver was tied up in a white pocket handkerchief. The offender is supposed to have worn shoes with very small headed nails. Information to be given to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Isle of Ely, Cambs.— Bow- street, October 23. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen from a pasture, on the 24th instant, in the paiish of Stanhoe; a roan coloured horse Pony, about 11 l ands high, aged, long black rnaue and tail which reachts below the bucks. Intoruiation to be given to Superintendent Rose, Ducking, King's Lynn— Bow- street, October 28. Description of HENRY SMITH, alias WILD JACK, charged with stealing 24 moor Sheep from Huttonle- Hole Common, near Kirby Moorside, between the 9; h and 13th November, 1866, the property of Mr. Thomas Frank : he is a native of Norfolk, and frequents mining districts, sometimes works in the mines and sometimes as a pork butcher, at the same time killing moor sbeep : he is about SO years of age, o feet 6 or 7 inches high, light browu hair, thin whiskers meeting under the chin, tbin face, hollow cheeks, sharp nose, prominent forehead, and slender build. Supposed to have resided at Beverley, Driffield, Scarborough, and to have travelled a good deal in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Information to be given to Inspector Milner, N. R. Constabulry, Kirby Moor- side.— Bow- street, October 28. Supposed to have been stolen from a meadow at East Wellow, on tie night of the 24th instant: the property of Charles Pope ; a daik brown Mare, 5 years old, about 14 hands high, J. F. brandidon nearside under the sa< die, short tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Super- intendent White, Hants Constabulary, Romsey.— Bow- street October 2.8. Supposed stolen on the 16th instant, from a field at Hampton : a dark chesnut Mare, 14£ hands high, star in ] forehead, hind fetlock white over in ffout, splint on off foreleg, small leather Work- case ; a Russia leather Needle- book with [ bad on a halter.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, October 28.6 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. October 28. Found at Hatton, near Warwick, on the 21st instant ( supposed to have been stolen), eight Sheep of the Leicester and south town breed. Information to be given to Inspector Harris, Henley- in- Arden, or to Sergeant Pitt, hampton- on- the- Hill, near Warwick — how- street, October 25. Description of two labourers who absconded from Norton on the 11th instant, stealing a Pony, Cart, und Harness ( pre- viously advertised and recovered): one is about 40 years of age 5 feet 3 » r 4 inches high, fair complexion, small features, brown curly hair cut short; dressed in light cap and vest, cotton cord irouseis, and brown velvet coat; he is well known about Guisborougb, in the North Riding of Yorkshire : the other man is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, daik eyes black hair and whiskers, wliich meet under tho chin, and dark' complexion ; dressed in brown cap, cord trousers, speckled topcoat, and navvy boots. Intormatiou to be given to Super- intendent Hamper, East Riding Constabulary, Norton.— Bow- Street, October 25. Stolen on the night of the 22nd instant, from a field at Water Orton, a black cart Horse, about 16 hands high, aged, blister muik ou near hock, long mane and tail ; also a bay Mare, from the adjoining field, about 15 hands high, aged, blister mark on near fore toot, long mane and tail, both in good condition. Any person giving such information as will lead to the convic'ion ot the offender or offenders, and restoration of the horbts, shall receive £ 5 reward, oa application to Super- intendent Bloxham, Aston, or to Mr. Whitlock, Bog Inn, Water Orton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, October 26. Supposed to have been stolen from a field in the parish of Newport Pagnall, between the 18th and 20ih instant, 2 black faced horned Scotch wether Sheep, the property of George Durham, butcher. Information to be givtu to Inspector Hedley, Police Station, Newport Pagnell, Bucks.— Bow- street, Oc. ober 23. Supposed to have been stolen, from Chorley Wood- common, on the morning of the loth instant, 7 Sheep and 6 Lambs, half- bred downs, one of the lambs has a long tail, marked on each side ' P.' with red paint ( nearly erased). In- formation to be given to Superintendent Hilsden, Police Station, Watford, lleitfordshire.— Hotc- sireet, October 23. LARCENYAHP EMBEZZLEMENT- Stolen ou the 26th instant, from the dwelling- house of George White, Catsfield, grocer: a dark Chesterfield Over- coat, rather rough cloth, the property of John Sturton. By a man, about 21 years ot age, 5 feet 9 inches high, rather pale face, dark lull eyes, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in a loose black cloth vest and trousers, and black billycock hat, and wore a ring on little finger of left hand. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Deputy Chief Constable Thompson, Court House, Battle, Sussex.— bow- street, October 28. Further information tespecling GEORGE RAWSON, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 18th instant, charged with embezzlement: he has lately been employed as a book- keeper, is a good accountant, and can write well ; he was respectably dressed when last seen, and is strongly marked with scurvy in the face, particularly conspicuous ou the right side ; he is probably making tor one of the seaports. A reward of £ 5 will he given for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Freeman, Borough Police Station, Nottingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 28. Absconded, charged with embezzling various sums of Money, of Farrow Green, his employer: JOHN SMITH, of East Bergholt, wheelwright, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair, blue eyes; pale complexion, little or no whiskers, large features, supposed to have a scar on right leg, having recently cut it with an adze; dressed in black cloth coat, brown vest, light cluck trousers mended on knees, lace- Up shoes, and black wiffel hat with flat top. Information to be given to Police Constable Gobbett, East Bergbolt, SoftMk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 28. Absconded from the house of Wm. Harvey, shoemaker, Church- street, Silverdale, on the 21st instant, charged with stealing a black and white largo plaid woollen Shawl, and Is. in Copper monies, ELIZABETH BRAMWELL : she is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, light complexion, and lame. Slur is accompanied by a navvy who bad been lodging in the house about a fortnight, supposed to have come from Chesterfield. Infoimation to be given to Sergeaht Torr, Police Office, Silverdale. near Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds a watrant for her apprehension.— Bow- si., Oct. 26. Absconded from Cardigan, on the 17ih instant, JOHN GEORGE, sailor, charged ou a v. anant with breaking and entering, on the 16th instant, the dwtl iug- house of Mrs. Kate Williams, of Pendryn, in the parish of St. Dogmells, Pembroke- shire, and stealing therein three Blankets, Sheets, Counterpanes, two Combs, linen Collars, Sta> s, two wine Bottles, Tumblers, cotton Stockings, Socks, Slippers, Notepaper, Workbox, Pin- case, two Knives, Spoons, and Towels. He is a native of Cardigan. 20 yrars of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, light bushy hair, lame of the left leg, feminine voice, and proportionately made ; dressed in a bine guernsey frock, blue 11ousers and cap, and bluchir boots. Part of the stolen property h^ s bven recovered, and George was traced tbroutth Carmarthen at noon on the 18th ioBtant, and ( it is supposed), w* 8 seen on the docks at Llanelly at 8 a. m. on the 19th instant ; when he passtd through Carmarthen he Was carrying a large bundle. It is likely he will endeavour to emi rate, working bis pss- age out, as he is an imperfect sailor, or he may be found about the ' Works' in Glamorganshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Jones, D. puty Chief Constable, Fishguard, or to Captain Stokes, Chief Con- stable, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.— Box- street, October 25. Absconded from his lodgings in Gloucester, on the morn- ing of the 24th instant, cliaiged with stealing therefrom a gold Albert Chain, a brown loose fashionable Jacket, pockets ftt the tide ; a black cloth Vest, without collar ; a pair of light mixture Troupers, all nearly i ew ( the chain has been found pledged), a Dutchman, who states he is a mate of a vessel, speaks gout! Kuglieh, about 25 years of sge, 5 feet 1 inch high, stout make, l'glit auburn hair, no whiskers or moustache, and round chubby face ; dressed iu a black cloth cap, with peak end braes at the sides. bl- tfck ribbed cloth trousers, and the stolen jacket. He left Gloucester by train shortly afterwards, and will probably be found at, the shipping houses lu London, Cardiff, or other sea- port towns applying for a birth. Absconded on the 20th instant, from the service of Hannah Lissman, of Ledbury, b. k- r, charged witli stealing a Purse and about £ 20 iu Gold and Silver, a baker, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers, daik eyes very lull, one fiont tooth out of upper jaw ; dreised fo a black cloth coat round at the corners, white vest, light trousers, high crowned hat, and spring tidte boots ; he laughs when spoken to. Information to be given to Superintendent Tanner, Police Station, Ledbury.— how street, October 25. Absconded on the 22nd instant, charged on ft warrant with embezzlement : GEORGE HYDE, a clerk, 23 jears of age, 5 feer, 8 or 9 inches high, ruddy complexion, light liur, whiskers and moustache ( Dundreary), large features, stout build, and rolling gait ; dressed in blue cutaway coat with facings and braid, and thick light coloured trousers ; he may endeavour to go abroad probably to America. Information to tie given to the Inspector, City of London Police, Detective Office, Old Jewry, Loudon, E C.— Bou- stnet, October 25. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Ann Holmes, of Brigg, about 6 a. m. on the 22nd instant, a new unbleached calico Shirt ( unfinished), deficient of collar and button holes.
