POLICE GAZETTE. CONTAINING Tfie substance of all Informations received ir> cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recoverina them. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person, requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. V* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As HO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY" WOUNDING. Absconded from Uppingham, on the 13th instant, charged with cutting and wounding Edward Rudkin, of Ridlington, labourer, with a reaping hook : CHARLES FOURIAN, an Irish labourer, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers, and has the skin off the bridge of nose ; dressed in dark cloth waistcoat, cord trousers, cloth cap, and strong nailed boots; a native of Longburry, county Roscommon, Ireland. Information to be given to Inspector Harrison, County Police Station, Uppingham, Rut- land, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 23. Rescued from'a prison^ van'while being conveyed to Gaol, at 4 p. m. on the 18th instant, two Fenians: COLONEL KELLY, 36 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, hazel eyes, brown hair, brown bushy whiskers, small scar inside right arm, scar over right temple, one tooth out of upper jaw, on right Bide, a native of Ireland, and CAPTAIN DEASY, 29 years of age, 6 feet 10 inches high, swarthy complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, brown moustache, whiskers Bhaved off, propor- tionate make, scar on^ lett, cheek, near the ear. About 30 men attacked the van, with loaded revolvers, a sergeant of police was shot dead, another through the thigh, and auother man in the foot. £ 300 is offered by the Mayor of Manchester, Robert Neill, Esq. Information to be given to Chief Constable Palin, Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, September 20. FORGERY. Description of GEO. JONES, a grinder, who absconded from Sedgley, Staffordshire, on the 14th instant, charged with forgery : about 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout, dark hair and complexion, whiskers shaved off, tuft of hair on chin, thumb cut off right hand at tecond joint, walks erect ; native of Wolverhampton ; goes by the alias of THUMMY. He is well known amongst the grinders in Wolverhampton and other places, and has a wife and family living in Wolver- hampton. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffoidshire.— Bow- street, September20. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of William Dumning, on the road near Oakengates. Salop, on the night of the 17th instant : an old silver verge Watch, plain case, No. 444. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Austin, St. George's Salop.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at the Chester Autumn Sports, on the 19th instant, a silver lever Watch, No. 1417i old- fashioned double cases, crack in the dial, the bow was broken off and left behind. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Chester.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Chestir, on the 18th inst., a gold lever Watch, No. 782, maker James Nelson. £ 2 reward will be paid to any one giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender and recovery of the watch. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Chester.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen from the person of William Dunning, of Oaken- Gates, forgemsn, on the night of the 17th instant, an old fashioned pair cased silver verge Watch, No. 444, without the outer case, and 14s. 6d. in Silver. Information to be given to j Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, Salop, or to Police Constable Bromwell, Oakengates, Salop.— Bow- street, September 20. | BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 8 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 18th instant, the cottage of William Everitt, Shenfield, labourer, was broken into, and 27s. in Silver, a pair of men's black cloth Trousers, and a plaid silk Handkerchief stolen therein. By a man, about 34 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 6 inches high, full face, fair complexion, light brown hair, small moustache, and pitted with the small pox ; dressed in an old pilot jacket, with a white slop under it which buttons close to the neck, light trousers, and new black cloth cap, and has the appearance of a farm labourer. He was traced going in the direction of London by the police, and the trousers have since been recovered at Brentwood. Information to be given to Superintendent Bridges, Consta- bulary Office, Brentwood, Essex.— Bow- street, September 23. Description of THOMAS START, alias WEBB, alias SCOTT, late of Hopton, near Mirfield, fish hawker, who is charged with breaking into a mill, at Mirfield, on the 18th of December last, and also into a mill at Heckmondwike, between the night of the 7th and morning of the 9th instant, and steal- ing on each occasion a number of Blankets, a portion of which have been recovered : about 43 or 44 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion, small and thin features ; dressed when last seen at Mirfield, on the 18th inst., in a light woollen ribbed suit, and a black silk hat, but may hava changed this suit for one of black, which he carried with him in a bundle that was tied up in a blue handkerchief. He has been twice convicted of felony, and is a native of Spix- worth, near Norwioh. A reward of £ 5 will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Martin, West Riding Constabulary, Dewsbury.— Bow- street, September 20. On the 13th instant, a cottage in the township of Oldcastle, was broken into between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. and stolen therein : a pair of brown cloth Trousers, torn on one knee, and a pair of Boots, kid tops, patent leather up the front, and brass eyelet holes, the property of John Stevaneon. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Tattenhall, or to Sergeant Watson, Malpas, Cheshire.- Bow- street, September 20. Further particulars of WILLIAM JOHNS, aliss JAMES PEARSON, alias HOWELL, who committed a burglary in the city of Oxford ( advertised in the Police Gazette of Novem- ber last) on the 7th December and again on the 16th January, and who has not yet been apprehended : he is 23 years of age, 6 feet inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, sullen countenance, had a slight moustache when he absconded, scrofula marks on right side of neck and slight scar on right breast; writes a good hand, and is a gunmaker ; his parents reside in Bristol ; he sometimes visits a relative who keeps a wood and coal shed in Westminster, he has also a relative in Devonport, at which place he was convicted in December, 1863, and sentenced to penal servitude. He sometimes hawks type in frames for stamping linen. Was in the neighbourhood of Wandsworth, which place he left in May last. A reward of £ 26 will be paid for his apprehension and conviction and recovery of tbe articles stolen and described in the Police Gazette of the 7th November last. Information to be given to Inspector Savage, University Police, Oxford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and who will forward a photo- graph of him on application.— Bow- street, September 20. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen from Blandford Fair)( on the 9th instant, a South Down wether Sheep, marked with the letter ' H.' on the near hip and on the near pin, the property of Mr. Wm. Miles, of West Orchard, Dorset. Infor- mation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Hammond, Stur- minster Newton, or to Superintendent Brown, Blandford, Dorsetshire.— Bow- street, September 23. Supposed to have been stolen on or about the 7th instant, from Steeple, 10 half bred Lambs, the property of Mr. G. Attenborough, farmer, Steeple, Essex. £ 5 reward is offered for the recovery of the lambs and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Rutledge, Police Station, Latchingdon, Essex.— Bow- street, September 23 Supposed to have been stolen from a field in St. John's, Worcester, duriDg the night of the 16th instant, ten wether Sheep, marked 4 H.' in pitch on the right side. A reward of £ 2 will be paid for such information as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the sheep. Information to be given to the Worcester City Police.— Bow- street, September 23. Supposed to have been stolen on the 14th instant, from a field at Brentwood, Essex, the property of Frederick Wiffen, a dark brown Mare, 14 hands 3 inches high, white star on fore- head, switch tail, one hind fetlock white, has a few white haiis on tne shoulder, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Bridges, Constabulary Office, Brent- wood, Essex.— Bow street, September 23. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Baildon, between the 14th and 16th instant, a black she Ass, 1 year old, rather small, in good condition, has a very smooth coat; the property of Mr. George Stead, of Baildon, cloth manufacturer. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, Police Office, Otley, Yorkshire.— Boio- street, September 23. Found at Warminster, Wilts, on the 14th instant, sup- posed stolen, a red and white Heifer, 3 years old, in good con- dition. Information to be given to Superintendent Abbott, Warminster, Wilts,— Bow- street, September 23. Supposed stolen on the 16th instant, from Hinstock, Salop, a brown Mare, 4 years old, 14 hands high, white star on fore- head, long tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Police Constable ( No. 84) Needs, Hinstock, Market Drayton, Salop.— Bow- street, September 23. Supposed stoleD, between 7 p. m. on the 18th and C a. m. on the 19th instant, from Earlswood Common ; a dark brown Mare, about 144 hands high, with both knees broken on the off side, near the saddle, the hair slightly grizzled colour, and a lump on one of her hind legs from a kick ; the property of Mr. Stephen Buckland. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Rogeis, Borough Police, Reigate, Surrey.— Bow- street, September 23. The bay nag Filly, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th instant, as having been sto'en from Welches Dam, has been recovered, and a man who gives the name of CHARLES STRAND, alias TAYLOR, a native of Little Wilbraham, Cambs, is remanded on a charge, of stealing it: he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet inches high, light bair and eyebrows, sandy whiskers, meeting under the chin, blue eyes, fresh complexion, rather broad face, scar from boil on left side of upper lip, two moles on right forearm, and one above the elbow, wart on back of right hand, .._ rt inside of left arm, scars from cut on thumb, forefinger, and little finger of left hand, arms slightly freckled, and very hairy, left leg has been broken, and the ankle bone is dislocated ; dressed in drabbett trousers, blue plush vest without sleeves, [ old dirty coarse white slop, lace up boots, with toe caps and brass eyelet holes, and a dark cloth cap with peak. It is suspected that he has been previously convicted, and committed offences elsewhere. Information to be given to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Isle of Ely.— Boa- street, September 23. Description of WILLIAM HARDY, alias ELMORE, who on the 10th iostant, obtained thirty Sheep at Spalding by means of a forged cheque upon Messrs. Gurney and Co.: ht is well known at Downbam and Southrey, Norfolk, at Littleport, Cambridge, and in the neighbourhood of Shoreditch, London, where he has been a cab driver and low horse dealer, 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout made, fresh red face, light complexion, little whiskers, which meet under the chiD, brown hair, getting thin, and a little grey, generally walks with his head a little down and one hand in his pocket; dressed in a long lapped black coat, dark trousers and waistcoat, black silk hat, and large handkerchief round his neck. The man and sheep have been traced to Birmingham. Information to be given to Superintendent Leaper, County Police Station, Spal- ding, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, September 20. Supposed stolen from a field at Tunbridge- Wells, between 7 p. m. on the 13th and 6 a. m. on the 14th instant, a brown forest Pony, aged, long mane and tail, about 13 or 14 hands high, the letter ' H ' or ' A' marked on one shoulder, the pro- perty of Mr. Thomas Waghorn. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Town- hall, Tunbridge- Wells.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen on the 10th instant, from Papplewick, Notts, four grey faced Lambs, found sold at Mansfield the same day for lis. each : by a young man, about 19 years of age, 6 ft. 7 or 8 in. high, dark hair, cut short behind, very much sunburnt, small features, hollow cheeks, small nose, and rather simple looking ; dressed in a black cap, white slop, open at front, and a band round the waist, dark brown trousers, and carried a plush waistcoat under his arm. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Palethorpe, County Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, September 18. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen during the night of the 16th instant, from the colliery of Messrs. Marriotts Brothers, Lee Green, Mirfield, a wrought iron screw Key, 6 inches long, and a steel two foot Rule, patent joints. By a man, 29 years of age, fresh com- plexion, hazel eyes, brown hair ; dressed when last seen in blue pilot monkey jacket, fustian trousers and vest, red necker- chief, and clogs. Information to be given to Superintendent Martin, West Riding Constabulary, Dewsbury.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen on the 20th instant, from a stack yard in the town- ship of Hipswell, a dark grey mixture cloth shooting Coat, has two outside pockets, and dark horn or bone buttons: by a 1 tramp, about 35 years of age, 6 feet 10 or 11 inches high, and slenderly built; dressed in old dark clothes, and either a cap or low- crowned hat. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Stelling, North Riding Constabulary, Richmond, York- shire.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen from the house at Talwrn Llanfechan, on the 16th instant, the property of James Thomas, a brown velvet Jacket, with new sleeves; a brown single- breasted velvet Vest; a pair of linen Trousers, with a pocket on back of right hip ; a check Shirt ; a pair of blue woollen Stockings, footed with lighter yarn ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, small piece put in on right knee ; and a pair of brown leather Leggings. JOHN EVANS, late of Talwrn, is charged upon a warrant with steal- ing the same : he is about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, stout make, brown hair, sandy whiskers round the cbin, downcast countenance, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen property. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Welshpool, or to Police Constable Jones, Llanfyllin, I Montgomeryhire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension,— | Bow- street, September 23. 6 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E, September 16. Stolen on the 19tu instant, from a bedroom over a stable, in the parish of Exning, Suffolk : a brown Overcoat, dark bone buttons, nearly new; a pair o: elastic side Boots, kid tops, nearly new ; a low round crowned black Hat; a brown and orange striped Serf; and a gold Pm, snnke pattern. By a stable lad, 1G or 17 years of age, thin make, dark complexion, very dark round the eyes ; dressed in dark coat, brown trousers, and the stolen hat. Supposed to belong to Petticoat- lane or Clapham, Loudon. Information to be given to Inspector Steggles, Newmarket, West Suffolk.— Bow- street, September 23. Further particulars respecting CHARLES HOLMES, alias BALL, advertised in the Police Gazette of the Cth inst., charged with stealing a silver Watch and other Articles : bis right name is JOHN THOMAS, a native of St. Erth, Corn- wall, 36 years of age, 4 not 53' as before stated, o feet 7 inches high, lie was formerly couvicted at Falmouth, for obtaiuing goods by fa'se pretences, and is supposed to be in Wales. Information to be given to Superintendent Lear, Bridgwater, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, S- ptembcr 23. Absconded, charged with embezzlinglarge Bums of money of his employers, Messrs. Huckell and Pattinson, of Maccles- field, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, CHARLES RIDGWAY, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather pale complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, eandy moustache, little or no whiskers, and dressed when last seen in a light grey suit, and high crown felt hat, some- times wears a light drab overcoat, with large white buttons ; he is a traveller or commission agent in the drapery trade, and is well known in the Potteries ; he left Newcastle on Saturday, the 14th instant, and it ; s thought he will emigrate. Information tp be given to Chief Superintendent Alexander, Newcastle- under- Lyme, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bom- street, Sspicmbcr 18. Description of WILLIAM BRAIDLEY, e watchmaker, who absconded from Crowie on the 30th ultimo, charged witli stealing three Watches, the property of Mr. George Pheasant, his master, viz., a silver lever Watch, medium size, engine- turned case, white dial, No. 1307 ; a J- ilver Geneva Watch, rather large siz\ etigine- tuiaed case, white dial, and blue steel hands; and a silver { double- case verge Watch, medium' size. He is from 45 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, f. esh complexion, brown hair, HD whiskers, hos a scar from a cut on the right cheek, and hia right thumb is a little bent, having been broken ; dressed in an old brown mixture coat, snuff- coloured trousers, pepper- and- salt- coloured vest with black trousers buttons on it. black silk scalf with a pin, old black hat which he wears over his eyes, and old elastic- side boots ; he carries a black leather s itchel, is Very much addicted to drink, and is supposed to be making his way to London or some large town to seek employment. Information to be given to Superintendent Henson, Epworth, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- streit, September 18. FELONIES ( Not otherwise described). Description of GEORGE SCHAFER, late of Princes- street, Stamtord- street, Blackfriars, an absconding bankrupt : lie is 42 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, thin face, pale, sunken cheeks, small mole on lower part of cheek ( supposed the right side), slender build, brown hair usually cut short; dresses respectably ; is in a bad state of health. Supposed to be accompanied by a female named Savage, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion ( fresh), good looking, and rather stout; dresses well. She has three children: two boys, 5 and 15 years of age, and a girl 9 years of age. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Hamilton, City of London Police, Detective Department, Old Jewry, E. C., who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Sept, 23. FRAUDS AND AGGSiA¥ ATSB MISDEMEANOURS. Obtained by false pretences at Hebden Bridge, on the 17th instant, a pair of Boots, a black Scarf Shawl, 7£ yards of dress Lining, 10 yards of black Stuff for a dress, a pair of white worsted Stockings, and yard of grey Cotton. By a woman, about 30 years of age, 5 fret 1 or 2 inches high, pale com- plexion, lost three front teeth, squints very much, and dressed in a faded dark green plaid dress, and black and white plaid shawl. Information to be given to Superintendent Copeland, West Ridim,' Constabulary, Halifax, Yorkshires.— Bow- sreet, September 20. MZSCSLLANZOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of a youth committed for trial at the next quarter sessions of the city and county of Lichfield, charged with larceny from the person : he gives the name of GEORGE BRAN, alias BROWN, 18 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark hair, clean face, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, high cheek- bones, wide forehead, narrow chin, sharp looking ; dressed in black soft wideawake hat, red shirt, and elastic- side boots; he states that he is a printer, a nstive of Loudon, and attends races and fairs. It is suspected that he has committed similar offences elsewhere, and been previously oonvicted. Information to be given to the Chief Superintendent, Lichfield.— Bow slreet, September 23. Description of WILLIAM COX, cabinetmaker, com- mittedjfur trial at the next quarter sessions, at Kirton- in- Lind- sey, on the 18th prox., for felony : 65 years of age, about 6 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, whiskers rather sandy, and wears them under the chin ; states he has worked for a cabinetmaker, for several years, in Northampton, and left in February last, has since worked at his frade in the Stafford- shire Potteries, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Notting- ham, came from the last named place to Gaipsboro, or or about the 6th in^ taut. Information to be given to Superintendent Wynne. Lincolnshire Constabulary, Gainsboro.— Bow- street, September 23. Description of a licence- holder who has failed fo report himself at the County Police Station, Newbury, Berks, as required by the Penal Servitude Act, 1864: WILLIAM GEORGE MASKELL, No. 2C10, 28 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, marks, moles; was sentenced to 6 years penal servitude at Abingdon for housebreaking ; his sentence will expire on the 9th July, 1868. This licence- holder cannot be found at the address given by him, and he is to be apprehended by any constable any time prior to the date of expiration of sentence. Infor- mation to be given to the Chief Constable of Berkshire, Reading.— Boio- street, September 23. Description'of three men committed to St. Augustine's Gaol, for trial at the next quarter sessions to be held at St. Augustine's Sessions House, near Canterbury, on the 15th proxim >, for housebreaking at the parishes of Lower Hardres und Cliilham: GEORGE SPENCER, alias FRANCIS BENSON, 20 years of : ge, 5 feet 2 inches higb, brown hair, grey eyes, i v com- plexion, thin face, 6mall carrotty moustache, very prominent thin Lose, face wide at cheekbones but very narrow at chin, scar on left thumb, end of first finger crooked ; dressed in black soft wideawake hat turned up at sides, grey cloth coat, brown cloth trou ars ( which he states he received on being discharged from Millbank Convict Prison), and cotton drawers marked on waistband ' 7 II.—/ 57.' States that he was born in London ; lias been a printer's warehouseman and commercial traveller; that he was sentenced, in the name of Francis Benson, to three years penal servitude for housebreaking in Gloucestershire, and that be was discharged on licence on 30th September, 1864; afterwards was sentenced to two years imprisonment in Coldbath Fields Prison, and was sent baok to the convict prison to complete his sentence of penal servitude. JOSEPH BAKER, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inohes high, black hair, dark swarthy complexion, small moustache, round full face, proportionately made, dark hazel eyes, little finger of right hand crooked, first finger of right hand short and rather wasted, deep scar on left leg, several small scars on face and forehead, is a native of Colchester, Essex, was discharged from the 95th Regiment on the 2nd July last, and states that he has a pension of 8d. per day ; dressed in dark cloth cap with peak, white slop, dark military trousers ( without the red stripe), and elastic- side boots. HENRY WEBB, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light brown curly hair, very light blue eyes, fresh complexion,' oval face, slightly built, a native of Cheshunt, Herts, and has a letter in his possession dated ' Stratford Broadway, 14th March, 1867,' aud signed ' Jos. Description of a man committed to Bedford Gaol, for 3 months hard labour, under the Vagrant Act, for going about the country and obtaining Money by false pretences, represent- ing in one instance the Money was on behalf of a widow of the parish of Renhold, who had last 3 Cows with lung disease, and in another case, on behalf of a widow of the parish of Thurleigh, who had lost 6 Cows, by the same cause, he presented printed forms in both instances, purporting to be tilled up by the Minister and Churchwardens of the respective Parishes, whose names appear at the head of the Subscriptions for liberal sums, he last obtained Money at Knotting, on the 4th instant, and on the 6th instant was taken into custody, at Sharnbrook, and upon his person was found one of the above lists, and ulso a printed list of the different Clergy of the Diocese.
