POLICE CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir. cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4449 MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 1867. / vJVitice. — It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *.* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, aud the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all ILettcrs addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND ISZALICIOTTSLY WOUNDING. Description of THOS. DUFFY, a labourer, charged with the murder of Geo. Benn, at Bradford, on the 4th inst., about 28 years of age, 5 ft. G ins. high, brown hair and eyes, stout build, and good looking ; dressed in a black slack hacked coat, cord trousers, and black cloth cap with peak. Information to be given to Inspector Campbell, Borough Police Office, Bradford. Bow strect, August 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the Gth instant, from the person of a man in Cardiff, a double- ca9ed silver lever Watch, No. 1132, with ' Bennett, Cheapside,' engraved on the face. Also stolen, on the night of the 13th instant, a silver lever hunting Watch, JIo. 8358, with glass broken. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the borough of Sunderland, on the night of the 10th iustant, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, has ' R. Lutert' written on the back. Boio- ttrcet, August 14. , Stolen from the person of Mr. William Taylor, of Bramley, farmer, at Otley Feast, on the Gth instant, a white linen Purse without string, 8 or 9 inches long by 4 or 5 inches broad, with a small pocket sewn inside, which contained four £ 5 Notes, one is a Bank of England notejj, numbered either 46650 or some- thing J c. t0 45055, and dated July 26, 1866 ; two have been cut in * ut fastened together again, seventeen Sovereigns, aud three half Sovereigns. £ 5 reward will be paid to any Berson giving such information as shall lead to the apprehen- ion and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from persons, at the Lewes Races : A silver Geneva Watch, 18 line silver dial with seconds, jewelled in 4 holes, No. 1681. A gold stop English lever Watch, with white dial and sunk seconds, No. 15280, had two small secretary Keys attached to a small piece of gold Chain, An engine- turned gold hunting Watch. A small gold hunting Watch, winds up at the top of face, blue enamel figures, maker Lecomte, Geneva. A small silver hunting Watch, Tanner, Lewes, ^ formation to be given to Superintendent Jenner, Lewes, or to any Police Constable of the East Sussex Constabulary. __ Bow- strect, August 12. Stolen from the person of Mr. Thomas Buddle, at Alnwick, 0n the night of the 9th instant, a silver patent lever Watch, with silver dial, gold chapter, and sunk seconds, No. 12247, maker J. Stolen from different persons at the Brighton Races, on ' the Gth, 7th, and 8th instant: 1 double case gold Geneva Watch, horizontal movements, maker Morlenia. 1 gold Chronometer, maker Webster. 1 gold lever Watch, white dial, maker Brillman, Bishops- gate- street. 1 gold hunting Watch, maker Gaudron eleve de Brequet, 98, Faubourg St. Honore, Paris, No. 6667, with a gold Albert Chain and Key attached. 1 large gold Pin— an eagle's claw holding a ball of coral. 1 single case silver Geneva Watch, dial cracked from centre to figure ' 11.' 1 double case silver hunting Watch, maker Haylar, Brighton. 1 very flat silver Geneva Watch, with a gold Albert Chain and gold Key in the shape of a gun attached. 1 double case silver hunting Watch, made in Aiundel, and a heavy gold Albert Chain with two Lockets, a gold Pipe. & c. attached. 1 silver lever Watch, engine- turned, maker Neale, with a gold Albert Chain attached. 1 small flat silver Geneva Watch. 1 silver lever hunting Watch, engine- turned, plain white dial. 1 old- fashioned double case silver lever Watch, rather small, maker Alexander Purvis. 1 silver Geneva Watch, white dial, sunk seconds, maker Mottu, No. 13392 or 13892. 1 silver lever hunting Watch, maker Winser, No. 22466. 1 silver Watch, maker Millet, Geneve, No. 4487. Description of PATRICK O'BRIAN, charged with larceny from the person, at Long Sutton, on the 9th instant, remanded until the 16th instant: about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, dark blue eyes, small dark whiskers, mole on back between shoulders ; dressed in a black cloth suit, the coat is s short loose one, red flannel shirt with black stars on it, print shirt underneath, soft felt hat, and elastic side boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Leaper, Spalding, or to Sergeant Crawford, Long Sutton, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, august 12. Stolen from the person of Thomas Ellis, on the 5th inst., at Lindfield Fair, Sussex : a gold Geneva open- faced Watch, white dial, closes very hard at the back, ' J. T. E.' engraved on outside case, No. 2017 ; also a gold Albert Chain, cable pattern, an Arrow, 2 Seals, and a Key attached, all gold, one a round Seal with 8 sides, the other an oval one ; and a leather folding Purse, no elastic, containing 3 Sovereigns, and about 20s. in Silver. By a female, of the following description, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light complexion, full faced ; dressed in a white straw hat, with fancy straw trimming, paisley shawl with white in centre of back, and a piece of yellow ribbon tied round theneck and extending down the back. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes.— Bow- slrcet, August IS. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, at the ' Grapes' inn, Worsley, about * 5 p. m. on the ' th instant, a gold lever Watch, centre seconds, makers Rojle and Rawson, Wigan, No. 3650. Information to be givento the Superintendent of County Police, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, August 12. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 12 noon and 9 p. m. ai the 12th instant, the dwelling- house of William Howells, tf Brynbras, nearCorwen, was broken and entered, aud the fdlowiog property stolen therefrom : 1 black cloth Coat, nearly new, sleeves lined with white calico, black moreen in the sluts, pockets outside the skirts, trimmed with twist buttons; 1 tiuff- coloured cloth Coat, pockets outside the skirts, and one bra^ t pocket inside, lined with twill calico, black buttons with two holes, and a Welsh Prayer Book in one of the pockets written on the inside ' Elizabeth Jones, Derwen': 1 pair € blue and red mixture cloth Trousers, nearly new, and linet with flannel ; 1 black cloth Jacket, lad's size, pockets at thesides and pocket inside left breast, trimmed with black buttoB, and lined with twill calico ; 1 pair of black, green and red nixture cloth Trousers, lad's size ; 1 black Vest, with green oi blue flowers, trimmed with black twist buttons ; 1 green, redand white cross- barred Shawl, with flowery border; 1 black Shawl; 2 silk Hand- kerchiefs, one brown Indian pattern, with white spots, the other crossbarred, brown, white, and blue; 1 pair of thin blucher Boots, morocco leather under tie lace- holes, and sprigs in the heels and soles ; and a broad god Ring. Supposed by three tramps of the following descriptio : one, 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, black mark on the centre of forehead, ad a large scar on the back of lelt wrist; dressed in low- eowned felt hat, blue flannel or serge shirt or slop, cord trousrs, and broken boots, and he may be wearing some of the stden articles ; he is in the habit of applying at unions for relef, and passes by the names of SMITH, RILEY, and KEILY. Another, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, and supposed to ie a native of Liverpool or Birkenhead ; dressed when last seel in dark hairy cap, drab velvet coat, linsey vest, small plad cloth trousers, and old broken boots ; may be passing by the name of ASHTON. The other about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair com- plexion, light brown hair, hazel eyes, lujposed to be a native of Dublin, and workB as a stableman ; dressed in brown plaid cloth cap, brown tweed monkey jac; et with white stripes, freen crossbarred vest, and brown mi: tnre corduroy trousers, nformation to be given to Sergt. Williams, Corwen, Merioneth- shire.— Bow- street, August 19. On the night of the 16th instan, the dwelling- house at No. 16, Powis- square, Brighton, was entered and the following property stolen : four plain silver tea Spoons, eight egg ditto, a mustard ditto, two dessert ditto, and a Fork marked with crest— a castle, a silver Mug, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, and £ 1 17s. in Gold and Silver. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, August 19. During the night of the 10th inst., the house of Jeremiah Winson, of Earl Stonham, beerhouse keeper, was burglariously broken into, and the following property stolen therefrom: an old silver pair- cased Watch ; a set of gold shirt Studs ; a gold Seal, engraved a ship ; a gold Seal, red stone ; two gold watch Keys, one harp pattern, the other plain ; a silver fish Hook ; a silver Pencil- case ; two old wedding Rings, broken ; two gold keeper Rings ; a gold dress Ring, with green and white stones : a pair of gold Ear- rings ; a small pocket Knife ; a small Pencil- case, with knife at one end ; an old Shilling, George III. ; a 6d, Piece ; a 3d. Piece, 1778; a Cash- box, con- taining bills,' J. P. Cobbold, Brewer, Ipswich, to J. Winsom.' Information to be given at the Police Station, Stonham Parva, East Suffolk.— Bow- street, August 19. On the night of the 13th or morning of the 14th instant, the d welling- house of John Seymoor, of Princes Risboro, was burglariously broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom : 1 old white calico Shirt; 1 clasp Knife, with brown horn handle ; 2 blue Handkerchiefs ; 1J lb. of Bacon ; and 1 \ oz. of Tobacco. Supposed by a tramp of the following description, who was traced in the direction of Oxford, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout built; dressed in brown coat and trousers, skull cap with peak. In- formation to be given to Inspector Webb, Wendover, near Tring, Herts.— Bow- street, August 19. Description of two men who are charged with breaking and entering a slaughter- house at Findern, near Derby, on the night of the 10th instant, and stealing therefrom one butcher's Knife, aiiu about 20 lbs. of flesh Meat, oon.;.. yjBst of Beef, Mutton, and Veal, the property of Mr. Benjamin Watson : one 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high,, well built, stands erect, grey hair and whiskers; dressed in grey clothing, cap with peak, and lace up boots, has lost the left hand a little above the wrist; the other 48 or 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, well built, dark hair and whiskers which meet under the chin; drcs- ed in fustian jacket, mixture trousers, low shoes, and dark blue cloth cap with peak, and a brass button on each side, anchor pattern. Information to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, County Police Station, Litchurch — Bow- street, August 19. The dwelling- house of WILLIAM BIBBY, of Rivington, farmer, was entered between 12 and 5 a. m. on the 14th instant, and the following articles stolen : a silver double- cased verge hunting Watch, maker John Alker, Wigan, No. 495 ; a single- barrelled Gun, lock out of repair ; a pair of watertight Boots, lace- up front, brass eyelet hole3 ; a twilled cotton Shirt, with iinen front and wristbands; a boy's linen Shirt; three common blue worsted Stockings; and a pair of bleeding Fleams. Information to be given to the Superintendent Scott, Town Hall, Little Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- tlrcct, August 19. On the 12th instant, the house of Samuel Salter, of Uppington, near Welshpool, was broken into, and the follow- ing property stolen: a foreign silver Coin, size of a crown piece, three Queen Ann Shillings, a wedding Ring, a lilac and white silk Handkerchief, a black and white red silk Hand- kerchief, and a roll of rent Receipts. Suspicion is attached to a tramp. Information to be given to Sergeant Strefford, Police Station, Welshpool.— Bou/- street, August 16. On the night of the 9th or morning of the 10th instant, the dwelling- house of Captain Phillips, at Abercarn, was bur- glariously broken into, and the following property stolen : four large silver Salt- cellars; twelve Fish Knives, pearl handles ; four Toddy Ladles, a pair of Sugar Tongs, a Sugar Sifter, and four Salt Spoons, marked' P'; a Dessert Knife and Fork ; a small silver Cruet- frame ; a silver plated Card Basket; ^ lb. of Tea ; 1 lady's light grey waterproof Cloak ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, hind strap of right boot broken, 7 size, without nails; a black bowler Hat, large round crown, broad brim bound with broad braid, brim very greasy ; a ditto, small crown, straight narrow brim bound with narrow braid, brown leather round inside which is cut in several places. £ 10 reward will be paid by Captain Phillips to any person or persons who shall give such information as will lead to the recovery of the property and apprehension of the offender or offenders, or £ 5 for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk ; to Superintendent Fowler, Tredegar Iron Works; or at any Police Station in Monmouthshire.— Bow- street, August 14. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING, Stolen from Slack Hall, near Chapel- en- le- Frith, on the night of the 10th instant, a bay Mare, rising three years old, white face, and white on legs, shod all round, and has been worked. Also a grizzled Pony, aged, with a slit in the right ear. Information to be given to Superintendent of Police, Chapel- en le- Frith, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, August 19. Stolen on the night of the 10th instant from a meadow at Over Ross, in the parish of Ross, in the county of Hereford, a large Ewe, 6 years old, marked on the right side ' W.' with pitch. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders shall receive a reward of £ 60, Information to be given to Air, a POLICE GAZETTE. August 19. Robert Webb, butcher, Ross, or to Superintendent E. C. Moore, Police Station, Ross, Herefordshire.— Boil- strut, August 19. Stolen on the night of the 28th ultimo, from a field in the occupation of John Davies, Sutton Green, near Wrexbani, a dark bay mire Pony, between 13 and 14 hands high, with a lump oil the back from a saddle, and aged, lnt'< rmation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham. — Bow- sired, August 19. Stolen on the night of the 13th iustant, from a field at Dillon, near Huddersfield, the property of Mr. James Jordan, manufacturer, Dalton, a grey draught Horse, 16 hands high, aged ; and a bay harness Mare, 5 years old, 15 hands 2 or 3 inches high, blacklegs, and white :>; ar on forehead. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Heaton, West Riding Constabulary, Huddersfrctd.— Boic- slrcet, August 19. Stolen from Welsh Newton, on the 4th instant, a bay cob pony Mare, about 13 hando high, with black points, no white whatever about her. Information to be given to Fowler Price, Esq., of Welsh Newton Lodge, Welsh Newton, or to Superintendent Blossett, Harewood End, near RJSS, Hereford- shire.— Bow- street, Augusi 16. Description of ALFRED DENNETT, charged with horse stealing : 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, straight build, brown nair, grey eyes, no whiskers ; dressed in long smock frock, cord trousers, yellow neckerchief, and brown billycock hat. Infoimation to be giien to Superintendent Colman, Sevenoaks, Kent, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, August 16. Stolen on the 10th instant, from off Penn Common, Staffordshire, the property of Mr. Henry Higgs, of Penn, a light coloured cheeuut hoi\- e Colt, two years old, 12 hands high, white face, hind fetlocks white, long tail, and in low condition. Information to be given to Sergeant Tomliusou, Police Station, Sedgley, or to Police Constable Bullock, Peun, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen from Whittington, Salop, on the night of the 12th instant, the property of the Revd. R. Wood, a light coloured stallion Donkey, without shoes. Also on the same night and place, the property of Charles Rodenhurst, a light coloured mare Donkey, shod all round. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, or to Police Constable Edwards, Whittington, Salop.— Bow- itreet, Auqus'. 14. Stolen from Sellyoak, near Birmingham, on the 9th instant, a dark brown horse Colt, 14 to 14£ hands high, dark legs, branded on right tore hoof with figure 3, and 3 year a old. 2 guineas reward will be paid upon the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to James Malster, Bradford- street, Birmingham, or at the Detective Office, Moor- street, Birmingham.— Bow street, August 14. Stolen on the night of the 7th instant, from Marsh Farm, in the borough of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, a Horse, 6 years old, in good condition, about 16 hands high, hind fetlocks white, between a roan and dark bay colour, mane turned on off side, useful for a cart or carnage, the property of Mr. John Ormond, farmer ; the horse was led through Tenby turnpike gate, at 11 p. m., on the night of the 7th instant. £ b reward will be paid on the appr « h « uainn and conviction of th » offender or offenders. Stolen about 3 a. m. on the 9th instant, from a field at Westerham, a grey gelding Horse, light and well bred, aged, in very low condition, 16 or 17 hands high. By a young man, of the following description, who was seen in possession of the horse going towards London, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high; dressed in a brown jacket, and billycock hat. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Colman, Police Court, Sevenoaks.— Bow- street, August 12. Supposed to have been stolen, on the 4th or early on the morning of the 5th iustaut, a bright bay Mare, white star on forehead, about 14 hands high, black legs, a few white hairs on her wither, a little bump on her shoulder, and rather a high stepper, rising 6 years old, from a field between Elstrie Hill and Brockley Hill, the property of Mr. Anthony Aldred, butcher, Elstrie, Herts. Information to be given to the Police, Elstrie, Herts.— Bow- street, August 12. an old rusty coloured frock coat, light mixture trousers, fly front, black billycock hat, wellingtou boots, and had a new white apron tucked round hi.- waist, a native of Upper Ditches, Bristol, has been in the 4th King's Own Regiment. Informa- tion to 1 « given to the Superintendent of Police, Tunbridge, Wells.— Bow- street, Auqust, 19. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Charles Welden, a labourer, oi Farcet Fen, between 8 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 13tu instant, a black cloth Vest and Coat, with pockets at the sides, and cuffs; a pair of grey cloth Trousers, with black stripes; a green paisley Shawl, " with two rows of fringe : and a pair of Wellington Boots, the left one having been mended at the welt near the toe, the other has a patch on the upper at the heel. The robbery was committed by tour men seeking harvest work, one of whom wore a white slop ; these meu were traced towards Thorney Fen. Int'oimatiou to be given to Superin- tendent Barker, Norman Cross, Peterborough, Huntingdon- shire.— Bow- strait, August 16. Stolen from Queen- street, Ramsgate, on the night of the 11th instant: a lady's gold Geneva Watch, chased back, nearly new ; a new paisley Shawl, worked or flowered all over; a black and, white plaid woollen Shawl ; two paiis of women's side- spribg kid Boots; and a green crape Bonnet. By a female, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, palo fail- complexion ; dressed in light frock with dark spots, black » nd white plaid shawl, and green bonnet. Information to be given to Head Constable Livick, Town Hall, Ramsgate, Kent.— Bow- street, August 16. « Description of a man who absconded from North Newing- ton, Oxon, on the 10th instant, charged with stealing from the bedroom of Charles Kirby, his master, a silver lever Watch, No. 9500, with silver Chain attached ; a shoemaker's calico Apron, marked w ith iionmould in one corner ; and the half of a red twilled Handkerchief: stated that he was a native of Clayton, near Market Drayton, Shropshire, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, small dark whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, white biliycock hat with black band, and lace- up shoes with toe- caps nailed to the soles : a shoemaker by tiade. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Whadcoat, County Police Station, Banbury, Oxua.— Bow- street, August 14. FELONIES ( Not otherwise described). About 5 o'clock on the afternoon of the 14th instant, JANE HADFIELD, of Dukinfield, was stolen and taken away, and has not since been heard of, by a female of the following description, who has been traced into Lancashire with the little girl: she is about 30 to 35 years of age, tall, loDg thin face, squints with one eye ; dressed in a striped printed dress, black bonnet, black cloak or mantle that she was carrying on her arm, and boots with elastic sides far worn. The gill is 3J years of age, pale complexion, light hair, blue eyes ; dressed in a black fiock trimmed with small black beads, grey holland pinafoie, white woollen stockings, and clogs. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Little, Hyde, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 19. Description of GEORGE NEEDHAM, better kuown & s SPENDLOVE, a nativa o£ Belper, charged with shooting and wounding Mrs. Titterton, in King- street, Belper, on the morning of the 11th instant: 16 years of age, 5 l'eet 4 inches high, thick light hair, round face, fresh looking ; dressed in a black felt soft billycock hat, black and white check scarf, brown chestei field wrapper, pockets outside, dark vest to match, light coloured woollen cird trousers, and light boots.
