V « S£ iije.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. C. mmm Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all L. etters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, Otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Absconded since the 22nd ultimo, charged on a warrant with forgery : THOMAS EDGELEY, of No. 1, Sermon- lane, Doctor's Commons, 88, Oxford- street, Bar ham House, Brom- ley, Kent, and 10, Wilbey Terrace Park, near Tottenham, Middlesex, 64 or 68 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout build, corpulent and flat chested, full grizzly whiskers ( which may be dyed black), bald, limps a little with the right foot, and stoops, lips usually firmly closed, when intent on business, and hums a low tone, voice loud and generally pleasing, laughs heartily, and wears a large carbuncle ring on the little finger of left hand. If seen, to be apprehended, and information given to Inspector Hamilton, City of London Police, Detective Office, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, May 17- ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of one John Morgan, whi'e attending Eardisley Fair, on the 16th instant, a double case silver Watch, with a small glass in front, Nc. 33633, maker Skarratt, Kington, a small seal and steal chain attached. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Shead, Kington, or to Sergeant Edwards, Eardisley, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, May 20. Absconded on the 13th instant, charged on a warrant with forging and uttering several Bills of Exchange, JOHN BEWLEY, 36 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, stiff build, round fair face, small blue eyes, light hair, thin and curly on top of head, very thin light whiskers, and generally dressed in a dark tweed suit, and brown felt hat, sometimes in a black snrtout, light trousers, and black silk bat; he is a native of Penrith, Cumberland, where he has been in business as a draper ; he became bankrupt a few wetks ago. It is supposed he will endeavour to emigrate to America. Stolen from the person of Dr. Nunn on Salisbury Race Course on >, he 10th instant, during the Races, a silver gilt hunting Watch, winds up in face, No. 8737, maker Barwise, London, crest— an upright arm, holding a dagger, also a double link gold Chain, with swivel and hook. Information to be given to Superintendent Matthews, Fisherton, Salisbury, Wilts. —. Bow- strut, May 17. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at the Great Northern Railway Station, Doncaster, on the 10th instant, a gold duplex escapement Watch, No. 10,227, maker Dent, London, on the inside is scratched very lightly the words « Sweeting, Esq.,' which is scarcely perceptible to the naked eye. A reward of £ 5 will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender and recovery of the watch. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Gregory, Guildhall, Doncaster.— Bow- street, May 16. Stolen on the night of the 11th instant, from the person of a gentleman' at Macclesfield, a gold lever Watch, enamelled dial, case worn smooth, maker A Hackle, Liverpool, No. 2648. Information to be given to Superintendent Etchells, Town Hall, Macclesfield.— Bow- street, May 13. Stolen from the person at York Railway Station, on the 7th instant, a lady's gold f- plate lever Watch, engraved back and dial, No. 12666, maker Charles Taylor, Bristol, jewelled in four holes. Any person giving such information as will lead to the recovery of the watch will on application to Head Con- stable Pattison, Scarborough, receive £ 5 reward.— Bow- street, May 13. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on the highway to Bracknell ( near the ' Jim Crow' public- house), at 9- 30 p. m. on the 7th instant, an English silver Watch, maker Wagstaff, Spitalfields, London, on works, a gold albert Chain and a 20- franc Piece attached; and a Purse, containing 13s. in Silver and several small foreign Coins. Information to be given to Inspector Reece, County Police Station, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, May 13. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between the hours of 10 p. m. on the 18th and 0 a. m. on the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of the Rev. E. Elton, at Wheatley, Oxon, was burglariously entered and the following property stolen therefrom : 6 dessert Spoons, marked with crest — a hand and dagger ; ( 1 ditto marked' E '; | 3 silver cruet Tops; 1 silver Mustard Pot; 1 silver Thimble. Information to be given to Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford. — Bow- street, May 20. During the night of the [ 16th or morning of the 17th instant, the shop of Mr. Moses Phillips, outfitter, & c., 10, Stuart- street, Cardiff, was entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : about 1 dozen fancy woollen Shirts ; 6 black cloth Coats, with pockets outside ; 3 pairs of doeskin Trousers, mixed pattern ; 6 white flannel Singlets; about 4 dozen white linen Collars ; 4 pairs of striped Socks; 4 fancy woollen Scarves ; bnd 6 black cloth Caps, marked on the ioside ' M. Phillips, outfitter, 10, Stuart- street, Cardiff,' all new. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Stockdale, Cardiff, I Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, May 20. During the night of the 14th instant, the spirit bar of Mr. Henry Hewison, of East street, South Shields, was broken and I entered and the safS stolen therefrom, containing about £ 8, consisting of the following: about £ 3 in Gold, 20s. in Copper, a number of Farthings, 30s. in Sixpences, a number, of Foreign Coins ( copper), two Silver Coins ( one about, the size of a fourpenny- piece and the other a little larger than a sixpence), and the remainder in silver money ; also five common Tea Spoons, a slate- coloured leather Purse, a buff coloured ditto, a number of Books and Memoranda, and three boxes of Bryant and May's Matches. The safe was found about hall- a mile from the place where the robbery was committed, broken open and the contents taken therefrom. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields.— Bow street, May 17. On the 14th instant, a cottage at Coed Margan, near Aber-, gavenny. was broken into, and the following articles, the property of George Llewellyn, stolen therefrom : a pair of Wellington Boots, nearly new, clumped, and tips on heels ; a pair of new black cloth Trousers; a black c loth Vest; a round felt Hat; two silk Handkerchiefs, one black, the other purple and black ; four cotton bundle Handkerchiefs, three red and white, the other yellow and white ; a silver watch Chain ; a black cloth Jacket, nearly new ; and a white woollen Scarf. Supposed by a returned convict and licence- holder, a native of Rockfield, near Monmouth, 27 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, pale com- plexion, light brown hair and whiskers under the chin, hazel eyes, letter * D ' on left side, a cross on right arm, two anchors, ' HOPE,' flag, and ring on left arm, several blue marks on three fingers of left hand, and ring on third finger of left hand. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk, or to Superintendent Freeman, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.• — Bow- street, May 17. During the night of the 12th instant, the shop of Mr. Miles Barber, draper, & c., Barlbough- hill, near Eckington, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 27£ yards shepherd's check Dress, 19| violet and black ditto, 38$ black and white ditto, 26$ brown Coburg, 8 plum ditto, 6f green ditto, 29 violet ditto, 29$ blue ditto, 26 black ditto, 42 J grey and brown ditto, 21J white and brown ditto, 24 grey ditto, 62^ green French twill, 61 brown ditto, 42 blue ditto, 49 plum ditto, 60 violet ditto, 9 brown Cloth, 9 fancy Stuffs, 62J white and violet Checks, 6 pairs of Stockings, and some woollen cord Trousers. £ 6 reward will be paid by the Eckington Association for the Prosecution of Felons and £ 5 by Mr. Barber for such information as Bhall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Superintendent, Constabulary Office, Eckington, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, May 16. On the night of the 12th instant the dwelling- house of John Nixon, of Spelsbury, was broken and entered, and a grey cloth Overcoat with velvet collar, two pockets outside with lappets, one pocket been mended, and an inside breast pocket; a piece of Butter; and a piece of Cheese stolen therefrom. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Lakin, Chipping Norton, Oxon.— Bow- street, May 15. Between 11 p. m. on the 6th, and 6- 30 a. m. on the 6th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Charles Rigg, of Little- borough, was feloniously entered, by means of raising the coal grid, which had been left unfastened, and the following pro perty stolen, viz. : 2 £ 10 and £ 5 Bank of England Notes; £ 5 in Gold ; 10s. in Silver ; a gold lever Watch, No. 38723, with black silk Guard and gold Key attached; 20 lbs. of rolled Bacon; 23 lbs. of Cheese ; 3 lbs. of Tobacco ; and an old Shawl, colours red, white, and black. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Pickering, Rochdale. — Bow- street, May 13. Between 2 and 7 a. m. on the 11th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. W. F. Timperley, of Thornbury, in the township of Pudsey, commission agent, was broken and entered through the sitting- room window, and the following property stolen; an English silver lever Watch, No. 90028, ' W. F. Timperley' engraved on outside of inner case and ' W. F. T.' on centre of outer ca^ e ; a gold Albert Chain, stylish pattern, had attached a fancy gold Key and a gold signet Ring with two stones, one green shot with red and the other a white cornelian; a new patent velveteen sac Coat, bound with silk braid, lined with blue- black thick cotton, black horn buttons, two pockets ( without laps) outside skirts and one outside left breast, in one pocket was a silk Pocket- handkerchief with drab ground and violet border, rather faded ; a Waistcoat, same material as coat, with watch pocket; a pair of black kid Gloves; a metallic Pocket- book bound with blue calf, brass clasp, containing memoranda, ' W. F. Timperley' written inside; a lady's Purse or Portemonnaie, made of bright violet silk, bouquet of flowers painted on one side, lined with white silk, several compartments, gold mounted; a new masonic Apron, bound with blue silk, silver tassels ; a polished oak Money- box, uteel mounted, containing silver and copper Coin9 ; a lady's gold cameo Brooch, man's face. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford.— Bow- street, May 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found in the parish of Llanfair, Montgomeryshire, on the • 17th instant, and supposed to have been stolen, a roan coloured mare Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, horse- shoe mark burnt on off hip; Information to be given to E. Davids, Police Office, Llanfair, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, May 20. Stolen from a field in Calveley, during the night of the 28th ultimo, a brown mare Pony, 12 hands high, about 7 years old, hair worn off hip, and has a cut mark on tongue. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent G wynne, Tarporley, or to Police Constable ( 6 j) John Edgar, Police Station, Cotebrook, near Tarporley, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 20. Stolen on the night of the 28th ultimo, from a field at Chobham, a brown cob Mare, aged, about 14 bands high, switch tail, nearly blind in the off eye, mark from blister on near ribs. Also, from off the common at Chelham, on the night of the 1st instant, a brown cob Horse, 6 years old, about 13$ hands high, bang tail, the dock rather bent, mane lies on near side, small wart between the fore legs ( scarcely visible) : a reward of £ 1 will be paid on recovery of the horse and conviction of the offender. Also, during the night of the 9th instant, from off the. common at Horsell, a brown horse Colt, 3 years old, about 14 hands high, blaze down the face, hind feet white a little above fetlocks, ears slightly lap. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Murtell, Surrey Consta- bulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, May 20. Stolen out of a field in the parish of Bockleton, in the county of Worcestershire, on or about the 8th instant, the pro- perty of Mr. William Baldwin, of Biichley Mile, Bockleton, a 3- year old cob Colt, dark brown, white stripe down the face, a little white on the hind fetlocks, and about 13 hands high. Information to be given to Sergeant Merrifield, Tenbury, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, May 20. Description of CHARLES WATKIN BURNS, charged with stealing at Exton, on the night of the 23rd ultimo, a Lamb, the property of Mr. William Simpson : 32 years of age, 6 feet 7J inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown sandy hair, sandy whiskers, proportionately made, and walks upright; dressed in pepper- and - salt coat, light trousers, low billycock hat, and old laced boots; he is a native of Exton, and has served sometime in the Isle of Ely and other Police Forces, and until recently was employed as a porter on the Great Northern Railway at Peterborough, at which city he was tried and acquitted at the last quarter sessions on a charge of larceny. On the 6 th instant he applied personally to the Chief Constable of Warwickshire for an appointment in that force. He is very likely to try for employment in some other police force or on a railway. Information to ba given to the County Chief Constable, Oakham, Rutland, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and by whom all reasonable expenses will be paid.— Bow- street, May 17. Supposed to have been stolen on the night of the 13th instant, from a field at Hastings, a brown mare Donkey, black ears and nose, has a peculiar habit of catching up one hind leg when walking, and has been recently clipped. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex. — Bow- street, May 17. Supposed to have been stolen from Tyler's- causeway, near Hertford, on the 1st instant, the property of James Roberson, a bay mare Pony, 11$ hands high, about 6 years old, bang tail, and small Blit in each ear. Information to be given to Inspector Hunt, Hertford.— Bow- street, May 17. Description of a man charged with stealing, on the 14th instant, from the' Cross Keys' inn, St. Alban's, a bay Mare and a four- wheel Chaise, the property of Mr. James Ware, 22 years of age, 6 feet 4 or 5 inches high, thin face, fair complexion, short dark hair, no whiskers ; dressed in a dark cloth shooting jaoket. dark trousers and vest, and black billycock hat; he gave the name of EDWARDS, and stated that he resided at a POLICE GAZETTE. May 20. St. Alban's, which is false; lie was traced the same morning driving towards London. The mare is 1.6J hands high, with bang tail, the forelegs bent a little over in front, a small scar on each knee ; silver- plated Harness, with plain rosette on the bridle ; the chaise is lined with light drab, dark panels, the wheels and shafts picked out with a light stripe, and has one lamp iron. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police Office, St. Alban's, Herts, who holds a warrant for, and will pay all reasonable expenses on, the apprehension of the offender, and rtCJvery of the property.— Boa- street, May 17. Supposed to have been stolen on the night of the 4th instant, from a fisld at Ogle Hill- head, the property of Lancelot Patterson, a dark brown mare Pony, 3 years old, about 13 hands high, rough mane, tquare cut tail, white spot on forehead, Bome white hairs on near hind leg. Information io be given to Superintendent Cocks, Morpeth, Northumber- land.— Bow- street, May 15. Description of JOSEPH HASLOP, charged on a warrant with being concerned ( with two other men, in custody.) in stealing a norse, Cart, and sixteen caica. es of Mutton, at New- gate Market, on the 22nd ultimo; about 24 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches higli, dark hair, tnTall tuft on chin, sallow complexion, downcast look, stoaps when walking, and is con- sumptive ; dressed as a butcher's porter. Information to be given to the City of London Police, Smithfield Station.— Bow- street, May 13. StoL n on the night of the 3rd instant, from a field in the parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall, a light bay Horse, 15 hands high, 4 years old, two white feet, is shod, rough coat, having laid out all the winter, tail cut squire, white star on forehead. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Complin, County Police Station, Truro, Cornwall.— Bow- strset, May 13. Stolen between 11 p. m. on the 6th and 8 a. m. on the 7th instant, from a stable at the rear of the ' Buffalo' public- house, Brett's- buildings, Shoreditch, a light chesnut Horse, 15 hands high, black mane and tail, blind of right eye, near hind leg white.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, Mat/ 13. Stolen on the 8th instant, from No. 9, Clapham- rise, a bright bay Mare, 15 hands 2 inches high, white face, black legs, bang tail; a striped horse roller ; yellow rug ; and livery coat, vest, and* trousers.— Metropolitan Police, W Division, May 13. r> • Jjfi ! . Absconded from Bridgnorth, on the 3rd instant, charged on a warrant with stealing 1 pair of Blankets, and 1 pair of Sheets, the property of Elizabeth Southern ( since recovered): CHARLES HONE, a pipe maker by trade, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, grey hair and whiskers; drefgei in old brown coat, cord trousers, and grey cap ; he is well known in Bristol, Worcester, and other towns as a tramping pipe maker, and is a member of the pipe maker's club. His wife tramps with hint, and she is api| e maker, and was the widow of a man, named Appleford, of Bristol, she is about CO years of age, and short. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Cole, Bridgnorth.— Bow street, May 20. Stolen on the 15th instant, from the dwelling- house of Joseph Lovegrove, at East Challow, Letcombe Regis, Berks : about 2 yards nf new woollen Cloth, blue and red mixture ; 2 calico bed Gowns, both have single frills round the l eck and wrists, and a double frill down the front; 1 black merino Skirt, lined with slate coloured calico, and worn a little at the bottom ; 1 black woollen Shawl, with a red striped border about 18 inches deep, and black fringe. By ANN LOVE- GROVE, 21 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, ruddy complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, broad features ; dressed in the stolen shawl, grey stuff gown trimmed with blue ribbon thus X over the skirt, and three ? rows of black braid round the bottom, a new black straw hat with the rim turned up all round and trimmed with violet coloured velvet. Now supposed to be in the neighbourhood of St. John's Wood, or Kensington, London, and living with an ostler or stableman, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inohes high, pale complexion, and slight made. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Neill, Wantage, Berks.— Bow- street, May 20. Stolen on the 17th instant, from a lodging- house at Batley, a black cloth rquare hipped Coat, nearly new, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, black covered buttons ; a blue cotton check Shirt, metal buttons, and a white linen Shirt. By an Irish labourer, about 30 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, fresh looking, grey eyes, brown hair, stout built; dressed in grey cloth coat, cord trousers patched at knees, old black vest, and cap. Information to be given to S* perintendent Martin, West Riding Constabulary, Dewsbury. Bow- street, May 20. Stolen from a lodging- house in Godalming, on the 16th instant, a pair of lace up Boots, tipped and nailed, in good condition, a pair of men's white Stockings, a pair of cord Trousers, nearly new, a cotton Neckkerchief, lilac colour : by a tramp 5 feet G inches high, dark hair and eyes, bushy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a grey coat, cord trousers, and white felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Burt, Godalming, Smiey.- Bow- itreot, May 17. Anv person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of GEORGE EDWARDS, lately a clerk at ' The Cardiff and Merthyr Guardian ' office, who absconded on the 7th instant, whilst uuder sureties to appear on the follow- ing day, on a charge of embezzlement, will receive £ 3 reward. He is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, rather red hair slightly curly, blotches on face and neck, a smali abscess on the right side of neck, no whiskers or beard, upright, large and awkward feet, and rather florid complexion; dressed in dark clothes, and glazed cap with French peak. He is sup- posed to be in the neighbourhood of Aberdare. Information to be given to Superintendent Stockdale, or to Mr. G. W. Jones, Manager of the Guardian Office, Cardiff.— Bow- street, May 17. Stolen on the 9th instant, from a cottage at Lyng, tho property of John Springall: a brown and white mixture cloth frock coat, two pockets outside, and dark buttons ; a brown cloth Waistcoat, and a pair of dark mixture cloth Trousers ( all nearly new). By a man ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13ih instant as a deserter from the 54th Regt. of Foot), 21 y « TS of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion ; he lelt Lyng on the 14th instant, and is supposed to he wearing the Btolen clothes and Wellington boots, his regimental clothes having been destroyed at Lyng. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Bouttell, Reepham, Norfolk.— Bow street, May 17. Absconded from Cradley Heath, charged with embezzling various sums of Money, the property of Mr. Walter Showell, Oldbury, EMANUEL CORNBILL, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, slightly built, pale faoe, lilack hair, worn rather long, no whiskers or moustache, small imperial; will be respectably dressed ; supposed to have a nelndiwe at Stow- on the- Wold, Gloucestershire. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Stourbridge. Worcestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bou> street, Map 17- Stolen from the ship ' Globe' nan in the Middlesborough Dock, during the night of the 14th instant : 1 pair of blucher Boots, two boles on each side, with yellow liniDg, and Hamburg make ; 1 blue and white striped cotton Shirt; 2 lilac ditto ; 1 pair of flannel Drawers; and some cavendish Tobacco. The offender left behind him a pair of strong Boots, with ten brass eyelet holes on each side, and heel plates on them, a good body Flannel, a pair of old flannel Drawers, and a blue striped Shirt, with some red paint on one sleeve. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Saggerson, Middles- borough.— Bow- street, May 17.
