Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the jiurpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offendors, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the some, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mu. C. *„* Whenever it iB desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested thot the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of a man charged with causing the death of William Cook, on the 27th ultimo, on the Midland Railway Works, near Elstree. Herts: STEPHEN HOLIDAY, alias SNOB, alias TURP1N, a navvy, 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, Btout build, fair complexion, light hair, no whiskers, large front teeth ; dressed in cord trousers and waistcoat, fustian jacket, light coloured hairy cap with leather peak, anrj heavy lace boots; is a native ot Herchester, near Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. — Metropolitan Police, S Division, February 4. Absconded on the 26th December last, from Morton- in- the- Marsh, Gloucestershire, charged with shooting and severely wounding Israel Gregory, a game watcher, in the employ of Lord Redesdale, two men,| natives of Moreton- in- the- Marsh: one 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, ra'. her slight make, rings in his ears, light hair inclined to he sandy, no whiskers, light complexion, and dressed in a short louud dark jacket, short white slop under, strong shoes, and dark cloth cap with peak ; the other is about 24 years ot age, 6 feet 6 inches high, middle size, dark hair and complexion, no whiskers, turns his feet out very much when walking, and dressed in au old velveteen jacket, white slop under, lace- up navvy boots, and brown cloth cap with peak. They have been both employed as labourers on railways. Information to be given to Super- intendent Harris, Pershore, Worcestershire.— Bow- st., Feb. 1. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Station, Trinity- street, Bolton, about p. m. on the 2nd instant, a silver lever Watch, maker J. W. Benson, London, No. 24486, capped and jewelled, gold balance and hands, with inscription ' Presented to Mr. Christopher Roe by the members of the Edgworth Burial Society, for his services as Secretary for upwards of 30 years, June, 1866.' Stolen from the person of a gentleman, in the Town Hall, Tamworth, a gold hunting Watch, No. 2172 or 2173, makers Wales and McCulloch, Loudon. Information to be given to Superintendent Oswell, Burton- on- Trent, or to Sergt. Lon^ den, Tamworth, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 6 Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Tamworth, on the night of the 30th ultimo, a double- cased gold hunting Watch, No. 2172 or 2173, makers Wales and McCulloch, London. Information to be given to Sergeant Longden, Con- stabulary Office, Tamworth, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Feb. 4. On the moming of the 29th ult., between 9 and 10 o'clock, John Quarton Wells, a pensioner, was stopped on a footpath between Selby and Cliffe ( called the Bank), by two men who had the appearance of navvies, and robbed of £ t in Gold, 16s. in Silver, and two silver Indian Medals, dated 1842 and 1845. The men were both tall and young, and rather stout; dressed in white smocks, moleskin trouserB turned up at the bottoms, and had bundles on their backs. Information to be given to Superintendent Lazenby. East Riding Constabulary, Escrick, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 1. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Cardiff on the night of the 24th instant, a double cased silver patent lever Watch, with the name ' J Davies, P. C.' engraved on the inside case ; a gold albert Chain, with a gold key attached ; also a gold Riug with the names ' J. Davies and A. Davies' engraved on the inside. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Stockdale, Cardiff, Glamorganshire.— Boio- st., Jan 30. • BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 2nd instant, the office of Market Drayton Railway Station was feloniously entered and about £ 30 in Gold, £ 7 or £ 8 in Silver and Coppers, a post office Order for £ 3 11<. 7d., a light brown morocco P ortmonnaie, lined with red, three or four compartments, and a small canvas Bag maiked on it' Market Drayton,' stolen therefrom. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Scale, Market Drayton, Salop.— Bow- sheet, Fib 6. On the night of the 22nd ult., the National School room at Bungay, Suffolk, was broken and entered, an I au alpac* Umbrella, two pairs of Goloshes, snd a Dial Clock ( since found pledged at Norwich), stolen therefrom. By a man about 40 years of age. 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high, whiskers turning grey ; dressed in black hat and coat, and is supposed to be a tramp. Information to be given to Inspector May, Bungay, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 6. During the night of the 2nd inst., the house of J. Smith, of Sundiidge, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : a missionary Box. marked ' Smith' on the top, containing a Penny- piece and a Halfpenny ; also a square w odeu money Box, con aining a Half- sovereign and a tew Coppers, amongst which were two French halfpennies ; a coloured silk Pocket- hankerchief, marked ' J. Du'iig the night of the 1st instant, the workshop of Mr. Hunt, Tethury, wheelwright, was broken open and the follow- ing Tools stolen therefrom : one new hand Saw, and one much worn, stamped ' J. H.' and three iron rivets ia the handle, one small Square, three inches long, marked ' J. Wall,' and one Urge Chisel. Information to be given to Sergeaut White, Tetbnry, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, February 4. During the night of the 1st instant the warehouse be- lonping to Charles Eyland, Esq., in Walsall, was feloniously broken into, arid 100 dozen of Spectacles, 60 dozen made of white and silver metal and 50 dozen of cheap blue steel; a dark green morocco russia leather Satchel; aud a pair of draper's Scissors, marked ' Oerton,' stolen therefrom. At 1- 60 am. cn the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Evans, farmer aud innkeeper, of Lauey- green, near Cannock, was broken into by two men, who assaulted Mr. Evans and stole a Cashbox containing ten £ 5 Notes of the Bank of Kti. lmd and the Bilston District Bank, and £ 11 in Gold ; a stiver lever hunting Watch, engine- turned, on the inside case marked ' John Evans, Netherton a strong flat link gold chain Guard, attached a Key to lie the cashbox, a Key to tit a small padlock, and a Key to fit the watch; a double- barrelled Gun ; a small bull's- eye Lintern ; a small Ax-, new, about jjdMweight; and a bottle of Sherry Wine. The dwelling- house of the Rer. B. Parks, at Southwick, Sussex, was burglariously entered during the night of the 30th ultimo, and the following property stolen therefrom : a black trock Coat, sleeves lined with blue silk ; three c'oth Overcoats, one grey with dark pearl buttons ; a pair of elastic side Boots ; a pair of oxonian Shoes ; two meerschaum Pipes, with amber mouthpieces, beautifully coloured, one in case, the other not; two large scotch plaid Scarfs, one black and white, the other brown ; a lady's old black and white Cloak ; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' P.;' and two electro plated Sugar and Pickle Siands. Information to be given to Superintendent Bray, West Sussex Constabulary, Steyning. or to Sergeant Grinstead, Shoreham, Sussex.— Bom- street, February 1. The shop of Messrs. Dickinson, Brothers, photographers, No. 107, King's- road, Brighton, was entered between 6 p. m. on the 21st and 9 a. m. on the 22nd instant, and the following articles stolen: a carte do visite Camera and Lenses for taking four portraits at once ; a half- plate Lens ; a quarter- plate Lens ; a black velvet Cloth lined with yellow calico; an Album with ivory covers, one plain, the other with wreath and a classical head in the centre, in a black morocco case ; a melton cloth walking Coat with pockets behind, been worn about three months ; and a black leather B » g. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of WILLIAM VERNER, charged with the above offence : he is about 20 years ot age, tall, pale com- plexion, blue eyes, and wears a light coloured great coat ; he he is a photographer, was formerly in Messrs. Dickinson's employ, aud previously lived with a photographer at Lewes ; he left Brighton for London on the morning of the 22nd ult, The camera was found pledged by Verner at Mr. Lawley's, 78, Farringdon- street, London. HORSl; AND OATTLE STEALING Stolen on the 3lst ultimo, a black Pig, from the farm yard of Mr. Francis Felden, Northflect, about 6 weeks old. L for- mation to be given to Superintendent Everest, Chatham. Kent. • — Bow- street, February 6. Obtained by false representations on the 31st December last, a half- bred Btallion Horse, aged, 16 hands high, dark bay, streak down the face, tail cut square at the dock, a large lump over the right forefoot, saddle marks on the back, in low con- dition. and has been used for hunting. By a man named ARTHUR GARDNER, a horse dealer, a native of Painswick, Gloucestershire, who travels in different counties, 26 years of Hge, about 6 feet high, light brown hair and whiskers, down- cast look ; dressed, when last Been, in a low- crowned hat, dark overcoat and undercoat, grey trousers, and sometimes a white tlop ; sometimes goes in the name of RODWAY. The horse is the property of Mr. William Brain, carrier, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, who will pay all reasonable expenses on the recovery of the horse and conviction of the offender; he went in the direction of Chalbury, Oxfordshire, for the fair there on the 1st ultimo. Information to be given to Police Constable Guilliam, Nettleton, Painswick, Gloucester- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 6. Stolen from a field adjoining the towing- path of the Mao- clesfieM Canal, in the occupation of Mr. Anthony Baker, of Newbold Astbury, between the evening of the 29th and morning of the 31st ultimo, a small long- woolled Sheep, with the left ear split snd a red mark across the shoulders. Information to he given to Superintendent Roubottom, Cheshire Constabulary, Middlewich.— Bow- street, February 4. Stolen at Wherstead, on the night of the 27th ultimo, from a field by the side of the high- road between Ipswich and manningtree, a Down and Leicester ewe Sheep, heavy with lamb, marked ' P' with red paint on left hip, the property of Mr. Gosnal Page, of Wherstead- grove. Information to be given to Police Constate Balls, Holbrook, near Ipswich, Suffolk.— Bow- tireet, February 1. Stolen on the night of the 29th ultimo, out of a field in t the occupation of Mr. Brooks, in the paiieh of Wishaw, 3 teg Sheep ; also at, the same time, a four shear Shropshire Ram, belonging to Mr. Dormer, of Dunton Hall. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 15 reward. £ 5 Wishaw, Min- wortli and Curd worth Association, £ 5 Mr. Dormer, and £ 5 Mr. Brooks. Supposed to have been stolen from a meadow at Calcut Farm, in the parish of Sturry, Kent, between the hours of 8 a. m. and 5 p. m. on the 28th ultimo, one old breeding ewe Sheep, of the Kent breed, marked ' J. H.' in pitch on the near side, the property of James Hooper. Information to be given to Sergeant Gowar. Heme, or to Superintendent Walker, Kent County Constabulary, Canter- bury.— How- street, February 1. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of THOMAS SHORT, charged on a warrant with stealing a large quautity of brass Engine fittings : about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and beard, which is long and rough, has a boil on right elbow, is rather short- winded, and lias bruises on his face from fighting ; he is a pensioner from the Plymouth Division of Royal Marines, and is supposed to be accompanied by his son, abont 26 years of age, short, stout, and blind of one eye. They absconded from Devonport on the 1st instant. Informa- tion to be given to Head Constable Lynn, Devonport.— Bow- street, February 6. Absconded on the 30th ultimo, from Beverlev, chargedl with embezzling £ 18 : THOMAS LEATHLEY, 40 or 45 years of age, 6 feet 9 inches high, stout build, large bushy whiskers round the chin, and large moustache, turning grey; dressed in dark clothes and billycock hat. He was formerly a grocer's assistant, and also a traveller for a wine and spirit merchant at Scarborough; he frequents low public- houses. Information to be given to Head Constable Hopkinson, Beverley, Yorkshire, who holds a warraut for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 6. Description of DAVID THOMAS, alias EVANS, alias DAVID PRETTYBOY, a puddler, native ot Dowlais, charged with stealing a Welsh flannel Shirt ( since f und pledged), the property of Mr. Elias, at Rhymney, on the 15tti ultimo : trom 30 to 35 years of age, 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate make, dark complexion, red spot on right cheek bone, and dark brown hair, rather long; dressed in an old blue cloth frock coat, old dark cloth vest and trousers, old brown cloth cap, with strap and buckle, fitting tight to his head ; he is very much in the habit of whistling at public- houses and playing with tobacco pipes. He is well known throughout the iron districts of Wales and the north of England, where it is sup- posed he is gone. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Tredegar Iron Works, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 6. AMOS SHEWBRIDGE, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, thiok set, dark hair, no whiskers, tattooed on arms and chest, absconded on the evening of the 1st instant from the ' Crystal Tavern' Burdett- road, Mile- end, stealing and taking with him three £ 100 and eight £ 10 Notes, payment of which have been stopped, the property of Mr. Wooder. £ 60 reward will be paid to any person or persons giving such information as shall lead to his a'ppreheusion and recovery ot the property. Stolen from the bedroom of a public- house at Caistor, during the night of 31st ultimo, a new ribbed blaok cloth Waistcoat, with one pocket outside right breast, two in left, and smoke- stained pearl buttons. By a man and woman who lodged there, and left about 10 o'clock the following morning : tbe man is a tailor, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark brown hair, and full whiskers under chin ; dressed in black billycock hat, dark or black cloth coat and waistcoat, and check trousers : the woman is about the sane age ami height ; dressed in black bonnet with a led flower in front or at the top, black cloak, and dark dress, and is of rather respect- able appearance; had some memorandum bo iks, wj^ iph she offered tor sale at places the man applied to fqr \ vmT< at his trade. Absconded on the 24th ultimo, from No. 6, Mill- street, Hanover- square, stealing a silver Geneva horizontal Waich, enamel dial, No. 2527V, a Purse, two Sovereigns, a Half- sovereign, and 7s. 6d. in Silver : a youth, 15 years of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion and hair ; dressed in brown woollen jacket and low- crowned felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, C Di- vision, iebruary 1. Absconded on the 28th ultimo, from No. 40, Carnaby- street, St. James's, stealing £ 2 in Silver and £ 3 10s. in Copper ; a man, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and mous'ache ; dressed in brown tweed coat and trousers and wideawake hat ; likely to be found in the neighbourhood of Raicliffe Highway.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, February 1. Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the Portuguese ship ' Lisboneuse,' Loudon Dock, a gold hunter Geneva Watch, maker Divien, a gold Albeit attached. By a youth, 18 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, very thin ; dressed in Ion ' dark cloth coat aud cap.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, February 1. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from a bed- rocm in a beer- house in Ripon, a pair- cased silver verge Watch with a minute hand, winding up chain broken. By a lodger, who absconded the same morning, a native of Kirkby- Stepben, Westmoreland, a blacksmith, about 45 years of age, 6 feet 11$ inches high, grey whiskers, winks his eyes when speaking, walks erect and soldiei- like; dressed in a blue pilot short jacket, fustian trousers and waistcoat, dark cap, and wooden clogs with iron round the bottoms and heavily nailed between the irons. Absconded on the 1st ultimo, from Broughton, near Wrexhain, charged with stealing a go'd Watch, a gold Chain, a silver Watch, a silver Chain, and £ 3 17s.: WILLIAM JONES, alias WILLIAM CHALLONER, 5 feet 6 or 0 inches high, light complexion, small quantity of hair on top of lip ; dressed in dark coat with velvet collar, dark vest and trousers, dark cap turned up behind with a bow in front; is a native of Wolverhampton. Information to be given to Deputy Chiet Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, February 1. Absconded from Southampton, charged with embezzling £ 500 and upwards: WILLIAM GEORGE CLEMENTS, late a clerk in the Steam Packet Department of the London and South- Western Railway at Southampton, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark straight hair, dark eyes and eyebrows, pale face, no whiskers, turns his toes out when walking, and looks down when spoken to ; dressed in dark clothes and deerstalker hat. Description of CHARLES DAWSON, a navvie, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued on a charge of night poaching, at the parish of Romaldkirk, on the 24th ultimo, where he liai been working on the Tees Valley Rail- way, and ab- conded on the above date : he is about 60 years of age, C feet high or upwards, head quite bald, thin grey whiskers, fair complexion, hazel eyes, broad shoulders, long in the legs; dressed in a long fustian shooting- coat, fustian or cord waistcoat, fuBtian trousers, nnvvie boots, old yellow leather leggings, sealskin cap, and sometimes wears a slop under his coat. By means of housebreaking, from 28, liiley- street, Higher Audley, between 6 and 12 a. m., on the 12th : six Sovereigns, two Half- Sovereigns, and 6s. in Silver, the property of Mr. Stephen Ormerod. From the ' St. Leger' inn, King William- street, between 8 and 12 p. m. on the 13th, a leather Travelling Case, about 12 inches long and 8 inches deep, has twelve compartments con- taining wine samples in buttles, the property of Mr. Thomas Threlfall, junior, Preston. Supposed by a mail of the follow- ing description, who offered a similar case for sale on the same evening at a beerhouse : 26 or 26 years of age, 6 feet 2 or 3 inches high. Blender make, daik hair, no whiskers, swarthy complexion ; is a hawker of paper, pens, < fcc., and a native of Manchester. From the dress pocket of Mrs. Francis Batho, of Plain- street, Brookhouse, while standing in the market place, in a crowd, on the 19th, a dark leather Purse, with tteel clasps, containing five Half- sovereigns and about £ 1 in Silver. A woman who was standing near is suspected : 24 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, round face. From 23, Moss- street, Brookhouse, between 6 and 7 a. m. on the 23rd, a silver Geneva Watcb, w hite dial, red spots round the edges, gold figures, flowered case representing the shamiock and thistle, had a black silk Guard attached. Also a german silver Watch, plain white dial, steel hands, had a black worsted Guard attached, and a double- breasted black ribbed cloth Coat, lined with black serge, twist button*, two pockets behind, much worn, the property of Mr. John Johnston. By a man who lodged at the house one night, about 30years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, proportionate make, dark hair and moustache, suufreckled ; dressed in a black cloth frock coat, light tweed vest, black cloth trousers, red woollen shirt with black spots, lace boots with brass eyelets, and black billy- cock haf ; stated he was a Sadler, and is an Irishman.
