POLICE 6111 CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, awl against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputes Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in rustody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Properf, that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4311 MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1866. IV'otlcc.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that • n Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must l> e prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of Stato for War, War Office, Pali Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded about midnight on the 2Sth ultimo, from Broxburn, in the county of Linlitheow, after seriously stabbing William Kildare, PETER ROURKE, labourer, native of Ireland, about 28 . years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slender make, brown hair cut short, no whiskers, long thin face, rather large eyes, squints inwards with the light one ; dressed in white moleskin jacket and trousers, brown velvet vest, blue cloth cap with leather peak, and navvy boots. It is supposed that he will make his way for some seaport in England, with the view of going to America. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Linlithgowshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— How- street, October 1. Description of an Irish reaper who is charged with cutting and wounding William Spencer, at Gainford, on the lOth instant, with two others now in custody : about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches hi^ h, black hair, long and dark bushy whiskers meeting under his chin, slightly pockpitted, rather flat nose, and stout built ; dressed in a dark cord jacket and trousers, and black billycock hat. He is a married man, and when not harvesting is a bricklayer's labourer, and resides in Wharm Gate, Hope Street, York. Information to be given to Sergeant Watson, Durham County Constabulary, Staindrop, Darlington.— Dow- street, September 17. FORGERY. Description of LEWIS BAZELEY, who is charged with Forgery on the Northamptonshire Union Bank : 28 years of age, S feet 9£ inches high, slender make, fair complexion, high cheek bones, long face, brown hair, dark sandy whiskers, shaved under the chin, and dressed in a black cloth suit and black silk hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Chambers, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 26. Absconded, charged with forgery at Huddersfield, JOHN NALL, 24 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, very stout, no whiskers, rather sandy hair; dressed in dark Scotch tweed ' ) t. He has lately been commission agent for Thomas Cooper, canvas merchant, of Manchester. Description of JAMES HARRINGTON, who absconded from Hertford Heath on the 9th instant, charged with stealing from the person— an old- fashioned silver Watch, glass much scratched, small brass Chain with two small silver Coins attached; an English vertical Watch, German silver cases, maker Brandrett, No. 018 ; a pair of new blucher Shoes; a low- crowned Hat; a light- coloured leather Purse with clasp ; 1 and a pocket Knife with buckhorn handle : he is a native of Bromley, Herts, about 31 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair hair and complexion, small sandy whiskers, downcast look, and has been in the army ; dressed in a slate- coloured alpaca coat with pockets at sides, black trousers worn and mended at both knees, shepherd's plaid vest, the stolen blucher boots, and a cap, or the stolen hat. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- Stolen from the person of John Small, in a public- house at Shroton Fair, between 10 and 11 a. m. on the 26th ultimo, a silver double bottomed consular vertical Watch, No. 1703. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Hammond, Doiset| Constabulary, Sturminster Newton.— Bow- street, Oct. 1. Stolen from the person of James Barnes, in the * Rose and Crown' public- house, at Newport Pagnell, on the night of the 21st instant, a double- cased lever silver hunting Watch, with second hands, capped and jewelled. No. 12167, which has been recovered : by JOSEPH LINES, 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, small piece of hair on chin ; dressed in a dark monkey jacket and dark trousers, or a white sjop_ and moleskin trousers, fancy shirt, Scotch cap with plaid band round it, and leather peak, such as worn by pugilists. He is supposed to have gone to Wednesbury, Staffordshire, where bis relatives reside. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Middlesbrough, on the 23rd instant, a patent lever silver Watch, silver dial, gold figures, steel hands, No. 25771. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, September 26. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from the house of John Bridger, in the parish of Leominster, on the 28th ultimo, a double- cased silver Watch, large size, and the name of • J. Bridger' marked on the inside case with a pin. Information to be given to Superintendent Holloway, West Sussex Constabulary, Leominster, near Arundel— Bow- street, October 1. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at NessclifF, in the parish of Great Ness on the 22nd ultimo, a long tailed Kerry ewe Sheep, marked ' J. M.' on the left side and ruddle on the head. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, or to Police Constable ( 10) Gough, Ruyton- of- the- Eleven Towns, Salop.— Bow- street, October 1. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information to Superintendent Cockshott, Settle, West Riding of Yorkshire, as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons who broke and entered the shop in Upper Settle on tbe night of the 14th ultimo, and stole the Monies and other Property, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 21st ultimo, the property of the Settle Co- operative Society.— Bow- street, October 1. Between 9 and 12 a. m. on the 29th ultimo, tbe dwelling- house of John How, of Addington, Kent, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : two pairs of black cloth Trousers, two black cloth Coats, two black cloth Vests, a black Overcoat, several Neckties of different colours; two Handkerchiefs, one white, marked ' W. How' in red cotton, one red, marked ' W. How' in white cotton ; and about £ 10 in Gold and Silver. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Kent County Constabulary, East Mailing, Kent.— Bow- street, Oct. 1. further information respecting the property stolea from Horeb Chapel House, in the parish of Llanfair, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 26th ultimo: on the 24th ultimo a tramp was seen crossing the hill from the direction of the chapel towards Llanervil, with a small bundle wrapped in a white linen cloth ; he was about 55 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, swarthy complexion, whiskers and moustache turning grey ; dressed in a brown tweed loose overcoat button- ing up to the neck, dark cloth tronsers, oil- case cap with peak, the fore parts of his shoes are cut. Information to be given to Police Constable Davies, Llanfair, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Boio- street, October 1. J.' 1 linen Shirt, plain front. 1 small brass Timepiece. 1 Razor and Case, marked ' Jackson, Hightown.' 1 pair of black cloth Trousers. 1 black cloth Vest, black and green li 1 black silk Dress, trimmed with k gimp, 1 inch wide, slate coloured cotton lining. 1 black satin Dress, trimmed with velvet gimp. 1 brocaded dove- coloured silk Dress, lined with black cotton. 1 black and lavender silk Dress, trimmed with black satin. 1 light brown stuff Dress, black and white stripes, trimmed with frills of same material. 1 black silk Dress, trimmed with ribbon velvet and black gimp. 1 purple, black, and gold colour mohair Dress, trimmed with black gimp, 4 inches wide. 1 snuff coloured mohair Dress, trimmed with black gimp. 1 alpaca Bcarf Shawl, trimmed with brown silk, 1 brown winsey Skirt, stripes round bottom. 2 black Jackets, trimmed with ornamental gimp and lace. 1 green and chintz barege Shawl, Bilk fringe of mixed colours. 1 dark red and blue Scarf Shawl, trimmed with black silk fringe. 1 blue and grey cheneille Scarf Shawl. 1 Scarf Shawl, red and black ground, with black worsted fringe. 1 flannel Petticoat. 1 silk Handkerchief, with white middle and blue border, marked < S. S.' 1 India silk- Handkerchief, red border. 10 yards of magenta and black woollen Shirting. 4 yards of purple and grey Shirting. 5 pair of Bed Sheets, some marked ' N.',' G. L.', or' J. S.' 1 linen Chemise, marked ' S. S., No. 3, 1863.' 1 black corded silk Vest, black and green lining. 1 small Portemonnaie, 1 small Vinaigrette, marked ' S. C.' 1 small silver Pencil Case. 1 woman's Night Dress, with needle- work round edges. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Martin, West Riding Constabulary, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.— Boa- street, September 28. Between 9 a. m. and 12 noon on tbe 25th instant, the dwelling house of John Jones, Cruganbach, Llangunnock, Carmarthenshire, was broken and . entered, and £ 20 in Gold, a 6s. Piece, six Half- crowns, a Florin, and a Shilling, stolen there- from. Supposed by WM. DAVIES, who lived near Bethesda Chapel, Llangunnock, a draper's assistant, who has since absconded, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair ( cut short behind), sandy whiskers, grey eyes, slightly built, pockpitted; dreased when last seen, in black frock coat, light plaid trousers and vest, silk hat, and elastic side boots. It is supposed he will make his way to Milford to get to Liverpool. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Carmarthen, where there is a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 28. On the night of the 17th instant, St. Paul's School, Chippenham, was broken and entered, and £ 1 in silver and copper Monies jand the following Books stolen therefrom: a Bmall Reference Bible, ' St. Paul's School' written on the cover; a Pinnock's' Old Testament History'; five Arithmetics; a Colenso's Arithmetic ; Thompson's Arithmetic j a Sullivan's Geography ; one on Food, one on Clothing, and one on Dwelling- houses, marked on the fly- leaf with the Government stamp. Supposed by a middle aged man, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, long nose, thin made, supposed to have a scar on hand or finger; dressed in black coat and trousers and black high hat broad in the brim. He carried a black shiny bag with a strap across his shoulder and is a hawker of books. He is supposed to be the man who lias lately committed similar offences at the schools at Andover and Tetbury. 10s. reward wUl be paid on his apprehension and conviction. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Staples, Chippenham, or to Superintendent Woodman, Malmebury, Wilts.— Bow- street, September 28. Between 3 and 7 a. m. on the ICth instant, a servant's sleeping room belonging to Tycerrig Farm, in the parish of Llanfihangel- y- Traethau, Merionethshire, was broken and entered, and there were stolen therefrom an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, yellow dial, with a german silver Guard and a short steel Chain attached, and a new- fashioned silver verge Watch, nearly new, No. 3424, double case, rather small, knob that opens the outside case broken off, the name ' John Jones, Pwllheli,' engraved on the works, with a german silver Guard and a small steel Chain attached. Two tramping navvies are suspected : one is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, and dressed in fustian trousers, white slop, dark jumper jacket, and jimcrovv hat; the other is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high. Information to be given to Sergeant Lewis, Maentwrog, or to Inspector Hughes, Bala, Merionethshire.— How- street, September 26. Between 7 p. m., on the 24th, and 7 a. m. on the 25th inst., the National School Rooms, Thornbury, was brok. n and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 18 new huckabaok Towels; 6 new diaper Napkins ; 2 new unbleached cotton twill Sheets; 11 dozen ' accommodation' Penholders, with light coloured handles ; 1 gross of Lowe's public Pens : 1 gross of Hughe's Pens, ' No. 368,'; 1 small table Bell, with a steel Stand, covered with green baize cloth ; 2 advanced School Reading Books, with black covers, in gilt letters on the covers were the words ' Advanced Reading Book.' Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellison, Chipping Sodbury, or to Sergeant Arthur, Thorn- bury, Gloucestershire.— low- street, September 26. During the night of the 21st instant, tho house of the Rev. — Fitzgerald, at Bridgwater, was broken into and two £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 32090 and 32091, were stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somerset.— Boa- street, September 24. On the sight of the 18th instant a burglary was committed in the city of Oxford, and a man of the following description is committed for trial at the next assizes for the offence : JOHN FLYNN, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7$ inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, scar on forehead, and ' D.' on left side; dressed in a single nreasted dark blue jacket with pockets outside, dark tweed vest, cord trousers, brown cap without peak, dark red plaid scarf, bluclier boots faoed with strips of patent leather aud eyelet holes; states he is a native of Templemore, Tipperary, and was discharged from the depot of the 83rd Foot on the 18th October, 1861. It is suspected that he has been previously convicted. Information to be given to IriBpeclor Savage, University Police, Oxford.— Bow- street, September 24. Between A and 11- 30 a. m. on the 20th inst, the dwelling- house of Joseph Hill, of Nurdin Farm, near Mtlford Old Junction, in the township of Sherburn, was broken and entered, and stolen therefrom: an Over Coat ( since recovered by the Mare, 16 hands high, star on forehead, near hind foot white, white ri « g round off foot above the fetlock, switch tail, hollow back, scurvy on back. Information to be given to Superintendent R. Hare, Shaftesbury, Dorsetshire.— Bow- street, September 28. Stolen between 3 and 6 a. m. on the 22nd instant, from the ' Halfway House' Camperdown, a small brown coloured pit Pony, a set of Harness, and a light Bpring Cart painted green, the property of John Miller, hawker. Information to be given to Lieut. William Wookey, Deputy Chief Constable, Bulman's Village, Northumberland.— Bow street, September 28. Description of a man charged with stealing two Horses at Barkstone, Leicestershire, on the 3rd instant ( which horses were advertised in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant), and for whose apprehension a vvariant has been issued in each case : JOHN LINDON, a horse dealer's assistant, native of Tamworth, Warwickshire, and late of Voughton's Hole, Birmingham, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, stout make, dark brown hair cut short, whiskers shaved off, oval face, narrow chin, much pockpitted, fresh complexion, red neck, small hands, walks with short quick step ; dressed ( when last seen at Shaw- lane, on the 4th instant, with the stolen horses) in a hlack glazed overcoat ahd bright black leather leggings ; has the appearance of a groom or low horsedealer. Also i description of a man who accompanied Lindon at the time the horses were stolen : about 60 years, of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate make, little or no whiskers, slight cast or defect in one eye; dressed ( when seen with the stolen horses) in a heavy urab topcoat, high hat, and cord trousers fitting tight to the leg. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Leicester, or to Superintendent John Platts, Melton Mowbray.— Bow- street, September 28. Stolen frcm Whittlesey, on the night of the 23rd instant, a bay cjrt Mare, 4years old, about 15 hands high, white mark on face, hind heels white, thick stump tail, and is in good condition, no shoes on hind feet, the property of Mr. B. Burton. By a man, who was seen riding the mare in the direction of Huntingdon, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair inclined to curl, dark whiskers, large blue eyes, fresh two pairs of women's Boots ; and an odd ditto. By a woman, 19 to 24 years of age ; dressed in black dress and black bonnet trimmed with blue ribbon. Information to be given to In- spector Singleton, North Riding Constabulary, Scoiton, York- shire.— Bow- street, October 1. Absconded from Newnham, Gloucestershire, on the morn- ing of the 21st ultimo, a tramping saddler, from 45 to 60 years of age, very short, slight build, light complexion, little or no whiskers, small features, mole on one cheek near the nose, and dressed in an old black cloth jacket, dark cord trousers, and black soft jitnerow hat with very narrow brim. Pie is charged with stealing from a beer- house where he lodged : a black cloth Jacket, about half worn, pockets at the sides, black covered buttons, lined with black alpaca in the back, and has several paint and grease spots on it ; a pair of Half Wellington Boots, about half worn, rather high heels and broad toes, sprigs in the heels, one of the loops has lately been sewn on, and the tops lined with red leather ; and a 2- foot Rule, folds up in lour parts, has a notch cut with a knife at 17 § inches, and a piece broken out opposite one of the stops, with the maker's name ' Aston ' stamped on it. He is supposed to have gone into Worcestershire, and will most probably apply for work at saddlers' shops. Information to be given to Superintendent White, Police Court, Coleford, or to Sergeant Scott, Police Station, Newnham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, October 1. Description of a man who absconded from Portsmouth on the 24th ultimo, charged with stealing the materials f « r making a pair of men's elastic side Boots : a journeyman shoe- maker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 iuches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair and whiskers, tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in long black coat, dark trousers ( supposed green plaid), turndown collar and high hat ( supposed alpaca) ; of respectable appearance. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Barber, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, October 1. Description of THOMAS JAMES, late a collector of poor rates, who has absconded from Walsall, charged with embezzling Monies belonging to the Overseers of the Poor of that parish : 45 to 60 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, rather stout, light auburn hair, sandy beard and moustache ; very face, large mouth, shows his teeth when speaking ; dressed in foud of snuff, which he carries in a silver box. £ 10 reward black haycock felt hat, dark coat with three seams in back, will be paid by the Guardians of the Poor of the Walsall Union rolling gait; speaks the Norfolk dialect and has a harsh voice. for any information which shall lead to his apprehension Is known to horse slaughtermen in Lyun and London, at Information to be given to Chief Constable J. The two men advertised in the Police Gazette of the 20th ultimo, charged with stealing 61 lbs. of Lambswool from Blaengewn Llanrhaiadr, are still at large, and the one who gave his name as JOHN WILLIAMS ottered a quantity of wool and horsehair for sale at the new horsehair factory, Llanerfyl, on the morning of the 20th instant, and when qnestioned respecting it, he absconded. Further description of JOHN LAYFIELD, who is charged with stealing from two dwelling- house* ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo) : he is 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, his . teeth incline very much into his mouth, and are stained with chewing tobacco, used to wear a beard, fond of playing quoits, and is left handed ; he is supposed to be wearing either white moleskin or plaid trousers. A portion of the property has been recovered, but the Watch, No. 20628, has not yet been found. He has worked at several towns on the north- east coast, and may engage himself to a miller as waggoner, or to take charge of horses at. any public works. Description of a man, representing himself to be a mid- shipman in the American navy, charged with stealing from the * Royal Eagle' hotel, Ryde, on the 21st instant, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, a Sovereign, a dark blue ribhed cloth Coat with pockets at the sides and buttons covered with same material, and Waistcoat to match : about 24 years of age, about 6 feet 7 inches high, slight made, fair complexion, slight moustache, no whiskers, light brown hair cut short, large scar on fore- finger of left hand ( supposed from a bum) ; dressed in double breasted blue cloth coat with blight eagle buttons and gold braid on the shoulders, blue cloth trousers, and cap with straight peak and eagle in front. He slept at the ' Royal Eagle ' hotel the night previous to the robbery ; and left behind him in a paper parcel all the luggage he had— a snuff- coloured coat with velvet collar and a white waistcoat.
