As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in tlic POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- Description of an Irish reaper who is charged with cutting and wounding William Spencer, at Gainford, on the lOth instant, with two others now in custody : about 45 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, black hair, long aad dark bushy whiskers meeting under his chin, slightly pockpitted, rather flat nnse, and stout built ; dressed in a dark cord jacket and trousers, and black billycock hat. He is a married man, and when not harvesting is a bricklayer's labourer, and resides in Wharm Gate, Hope Street, York. Information to be given to Sergeant Watson, Durham County Constabulary, Staindrop, Darlington.— Bow- street, September 17. At lO a. m. on the 12th instant a boatman found amongst the grass near the towing path of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Apperley Bridge, in the township of Idle, the dead body of a fully developed female Child ; a large stoue was tied to the body with strong cord, and the whole was wrapped in black linen ; it is supposed that the child was born alive and lived a short time, hud been dead about, two days, and in the water a few hours. A verdict of • Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, Court House, Bradford, Yorkshire. — Bow- strea, September 14. KOBB£ RY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- Supposed to have been stolen from the person of a lady while getting into a railway carriage at Milton Staton, at 3~ 15 p. m. on the 12th instant : a small black leather Purse, with steel rim and clasp, containing 3 Sove- reigns, 5 Shillings, a figured gold Ring, repaired in two places, with two gold Watch Keys ( one plain, the other having a yelI-, xv stone on one side and white stone on the other) attached thopr. o ; a small gold Pencil Case with yellow stone ; a gold Seai ^ itl> 0red stone, and two hands clasped engraved thereon ; a small bra- s padlock Key ; a common Watch Key ; a second class return Railway Ticket, and a Half ditto from North Shields to Rose Hill, dated the 10th instant. Suspicion is attached to a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches bigh, sallow complexion, ill looking, ginger whiskers, and pro portion* te make ; dressed in dark clothes and a soft felt round black hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Brampton, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland. — Bow- street, September 17. Stolen from the person of JOHN POLLARD, at the Railway Station at Kibworth, Leicestershire, on the evening of the 13th instant, a silver hunting Watch, maker Deacon, Barton, No. 5671, white dial with Roman figures. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ilifle, Constabulary Station, Maiket Hai borough, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, Sept. 17. Stolen from the person of Hugh Reese, farm servant, near Buttington- gate, Welshpool, on the night of the 30th ultimo, a pair- cased verge Watch, bull's eye glass, • L.' ecratched on outer case near the catch, maker Pullingford, London No. 4471. Information to be given to Sergeant Strefford, Police Station, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- st' eet, September 14. Stolen on the 9th instant, between tbe hours of 9 and 12 p. m. from the person of William Martin, whilst asleep by the side of the road in the parish of May field Sussex, a black cloth Jacket, pockets at„ the side, and one breast pocket, a shepherd's plaid Vest, and a silver Geneva Watch, a hair Guard with gold clasp attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Bennett. Uckfield, Sussex, or to Sergeant Peerless, Mark Cross Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, September 14. Stolen from Samuel Dean, in the parish of Wirksworth, on the 9th instant, a double cased silver verge Watch, « S. D.' on the Iront side, had a crack on the dial near the figure IX. A reward of £ 5 will be paid on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the watch. Infor- mation to be given to the Chief Superintendent, Constabulary Omoe, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, September 12. Supposed to have been stolen on the 4th instant, on the race course, Warwick, a yellow morocco bettiug Book, bound with brass, containing a cheque for £ 25, drawn on Messrs. llerries and Farquhar, bankers, St. James'- street, London, also a £ 50 Bank of England Note, a £ 5 ditto, and several Memo- randa. If stolen, £ 10 reward will be paid on the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. In- formation to be given to Chief Superintendent llickling, Warwick.— Bow- street, September 12. Description of THOMAS BURNS, a forgeman, charged with stealing 7s. 6d. from the person of Mary Ann Jinks, at Sandbach, on the 10th instant: he is about 22 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, small whiskers ; dressed in moleskin trousers, white slop, and has a woollen muffler tied loosely round his neck. Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, September 12. Stolen from the person in Hyde Wakes, on the 10th inst., a patent lever silver Watch, makers Cooper and Co., London, No. 24576, extra jewelled, and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 27272, with small seconds on dial. Stolen from the person at Lynn Races, on the 6th instant, I f- plate gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, fuse movement, No. 16794, and an old gold Geneva Watcn. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the person of Evan Price, on Oldbury race course, a silver Geneva Watch, No. 7785. Information to be given to Superintendent of Police, Halesowen, or to Sergeant Simmonds, Police Station, Oldbury, near Bir- mingham.— Bow- street, September 10. Stolen from the person of Matthew Thompson, between II p. m. on the 29th and 2 a. m. on the 30th ultimo, in the parish of Penhow, an open- faced silver lever Watch, capped and jewelled, No. 144 ; a secret link gold Albert Chain with gold Key, white stone in the end the steel pipe broken ; a brown paper Parcel containing a new suit of mixed tweed Clothes; and an old alpaca Umbrella. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk ; to Superintendent Mcintosh, Pontypool ; or to Inspector Sheppard, County Constabulary, Newport, Monmouthshire.— Bow- street, Sept. 1. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 11 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 15th instant, the lodge house occupied by William Tibby, at New Parks, Leicester- shire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : £ 3 16s. in Gold and Silver, and 12 old Penny- pieces ; a small square gilt Brooeh, containing dark ' hair plaited, studded with small dark stones ; a larger gilt ditto, oval pattern, light blue stone in centre; a small gold twisted Pin, with round head ; and a plain gold Wedding Ring. An old rusty broken hand- saw was left behind by the thieves. Information to be given to Superintendent Burdett, Aylestone, Leicestershire.— Bow- streel, September 17. During the night of tbe 14th instant, the lockup shop in Upper Settle, occupied by the Settle Co- operative Society, was broken and entered, and the following- property stolen there- from : about 15s. in copper Money, about 6s. in 6d. Pieces, and about 8s. in 3d. and 4d. Pieces ; one of the small silver coins appears to have been worn on a watch, it has a hole through it, and it is difficult to discern whether it is a 31. or 4d. piece, and it c « n be identified ; a silk Pocket- handkerchief, lilac and white, figured centre, with plain lilac and white border ; one ditto, Turkey red and buff colours, old- fashioned ; seven or eight silk Neckties ( women's), various colours; twelve woollen Handkerchiefs, ditto, ditto ; eight fancy Scarfs, ditto, ditto ; and about 40 yards of steel- grey Winsey. Information to be given to Supeiintendent Cockshott, West Riding Constabulary, Settle, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 17. About 4 a. m. on the 12th instant, a dwelling- house at Greenhill, Weymouth, was broken and entered, and the fol- lowing property stolen : a gold Watch, single case, engine turned, gold dial, double main spring, separate in two cylinders, opens with a spring, on the inner back covering the works there are three or four lines of engraving, with the number and maker's name, Dwerryhouse, London, No. 1318G; a massive gold Albert Chain and Key ; a gold Compass ; two gold Seals, one marked ' W. J. S.', the other' Greenhill,' with a magnified portrait of a gentleman in its interior ; and a brown morocco Purse containing about £ 12 or £ 14 in Gold, a Post- office Order for 1 Guinea, payable at Weymouth ; and some Memoranda. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the c ( finder or offenders, and recovery of the property stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Lidbury, Police Office, Weymouth, Dorset.— Bow- street, September 17. Between 9 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 12th instant, the house of Mr. John Salt, farmer, Flash Bar, near Leek, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom: a silver lever Watch, maker A. Cameron, Liverpool, No 5182, with silver curb Guard; a silver verge Watch, maker Joshua Barton, Liverpool, No. 279, steel Chain attached; a pair of men's cloth Trouseis, a black cloth Vest, a pair of red Braces with light stripes, a black silk Scarf, a yellow ditto with blue stripes, a Half- sovereign, and Gs. in Silver. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Leek, Staffordshire,— Bow- street, September 17. The house of Daniel Gibby was entered on the night of the 12th or early on the morning of the 13th instant, and the following articles stolen therefrom : a Night Dress, a Chemise, a pair of Drawers, two Diapers, two white cotton Pocket Handkerchiefs ( all marked ' C. Haycraft' in ink); a Clothes Bag, five fancy flannel Shirts, a flannel Petticoat, a white Jacket Body, an orange coloured silk Handkerchief ( marked ' D. Rres, No. 7') ; a Clothes Bag, and ten Diapers, marked ' S. A, Wining'; a linen Sheet, a Toilet, two Towels, three Chemises, one linen and two cotton, two flannel Waistcoats, a Pillow Case, and a Table Napkin ( all marked ' Mil'; a Cavalry Pistol, flint lock, and broken ; an old grey cloth Coat; a boy s Jacket, pepper- and- salt colour with stripes in it; and a pair of large Shoes, nailed. Information to be giver< to Superintendent Sadler, Bridgend, or to Sergt. Thomas, CowbriJgs, Glamorgan. — Bow street, September 17. During the night of the 12th instant, the shop of Mr. John. Handyside, Cambo, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 19 yards of dark grey tweed Cloth; 12J yards of ditto, but of different pattern; 22 yards of dark heather mixture tweed Cloth, has rather a green shade ; a £ 5 Carlisle Bank Note, has been cut in two and joined with the margin of postage stamps, writing on the back, and has a peculiar crease at bottom ; £ 13 in Gold, 20s. in Silver, some Coppers, Biid a Deposit Receipt for £ 10 in Lamhtonfc Branch Bank at Morpeth, in the name of ' John Handyside.' Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Major Browne, Alnwick, or to Superintendent Gillespie, Rothbury, Northumberland.— Bow- streel, September 17. Lake House, near Salisbury, the residence of tbe Rev. E. Duke, was broken and; entered between 3 and 4 i. m. on the 16th instant, and the silver Frame of a Cruet Stand for live bottles, with a silver Mustard Spoon, a silver Caddy ditto, and 4s. 6d. in Silver stolen therefrom. Many drawers were forced open by means of two chisels, a large and small one, and a number of articles removed to take away, but the thieves were disturbed. Information to be given to Superintendent Matthews, Wilts Constabulary, Fisherton, Salisbury, Wilts. — Bow- street, September 17. Between 12 and 4 a. m. the 12th instant, the dwelling- house of Dr. Smith, Greenhill, Weymouth, was broken and entered, and stolen therefrom : a single- case gold Watch, engine- turned, double main- spring separate in two cylinders, gold dial, opens with a spring, and on inner back covering of works there are three or four lines of engraving with the number and miker's name, ' Dweryhouse, L melon'; a massive gold Albert Chain and Key, two gold Seals ( one marked ' W. J. S.' the other ' Greenhill,' and a gold Compass, attached ; a brown morocco Purse, containing about £ 10 in Gold ; a Post Office Order for one guiuea, payable at Weymouth; and some Memoranda. Two men were seen on the premises. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ledbury, Weymouth, Dorsetshire.— Bow- street, September 14. During the night of the Gth instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Robert Webb, of Rattlesden, Suffolk, was broken and entered, and a pair of men's high Shoes, with sparables in the middle of the sole in the shape of a heart, stolen therefrom. A pair of old shoes were left in the house, belonging to a returned convict named ROBERT GRIMWOOD, alias ROBERT BUXTON, alias BLACK BOB, a native of Rattlesden, 48 years of age, 6 feet G inches high, dark com- plexion, blind in left eye, black hair turning grey, stout make, and turns his feet out when walking; dressed in a snuff coloured velvet frock, soldier's trousers without stripe, and black billy hat. He is charged with this offence, and is sup- posed to be wearing the stolen boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Durrani, Ixworth, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 14. Between the hours of 10 a. m. and 8 p. m., on the 11th instant, the dwelling- house of John Edwards, of Llwynisa, Llanrhaiddr, near Denbigh, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom : a drab mixture cloth Jacket, pockets outside and inside, a breast pocket lined with tweed with small red spots; a vest of the same material, flaps on the pockets, breast pocket of white calico; a pair of drab cloth Trousers ( all nearly new); a black silk Neckerchief with white spots; a Razor, maker Rogers, Sheffield ; a pair of thin lace up Boots, brass eyelet holes, and newly soled ; and a pair of strong blucher Boots. The offender or offenders are supposed to be wearing the stolen property, having left a dirty suit on the premises. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Pugh, Denbigh,— Bow- street, September 14. Description of a man charged with burglary at Riwmarsh, on the 6th instant: a shoemaker, 27 years of age, 6 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, light brown hair, a little hair under chin, and is of slender build; dressed in an old brown loose jacket, with two pockets outside, vest of same material, cotton c'ord trousers, cloth cap with peak, and lace- up boots; he is a native of Rawmarsh, but last resided at Bradford. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillett, Court Houfje, Rotherham, Yorkshire.— Bow- Urea, Sept. 12. During the night of the Gth instant, the'. dwelling- house of A. Lucas, Esq , West- terrace, Darlington, was broken and entered, and the following silver articles stolen therefrom; twelve ivory handled Knives; twelve Dessert Forks, figured ; six Dessert Spoons, six large and six small Dinner Forks, six Tea Spoons, fid. lle pattern ( all marked ' L' in old English) ; six nearly new Tea Spoons, four Egg ditto, figured handles ; a Dessert ditto, marked ' M. A. T.' and other initials; two Table ditto, marked ' L' in old English ; a Salt ditto, a Mus- tard ditto, two Sugar Sifters, one lined with gold ; a pair of Sugar Tongs, two small Forks, a Table Spoon, a large Soup Ladle, marked ' L' in old English ; a Marmalade Dish Stand, about 6 inches in diameter, with a sta^ berry on handle ; a Cruet Stand and six Cruet Tops; a ditto ditto, small size, leaf pattern; a flit solid Inkstand, about 8 ins. long, with grove for pens, an ! two bottles; a Thimble, a pail- of scissors, a Bodkin, and a brass or gold wire Frame to hold the box containing the thimble, scissors, and bodkin. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING, Stolen during the night of the 13th instant, from a stable in the parish of Wotton. Surrey, a light bay Mare, 14 hands high, 4 years old, has a black stripe about an inch wide from back to the tail, and in good condition, the property of Mr. W. Norris. Stolen from a field at Lwdford, Wilis, during the night of the 12th iu-' ant. a light bay Geldintr, apparently thorough- bred, C yeirs old, about 14 hands high, white star on forehead, a few white hairs unner saddle, the off hind foot white, clean small legs, a very small lump inside one of hind legs, shoes nearly worn through. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Matthews, County Police Station, Salisbury, Wilts.— Bow- street, September 17. Abscnded from Halifax, charged with horse stealing : JAMES DEV1NE, alias FISHER, alias JOHNSON, about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, bnshy whiskers which meet under the chin, right arm stiff, scar on cheek as from an old wound, ulso one behind left ear ; dressed in a black cloth jacket, very much worn, supposed cord trousers, lace- up hoots, and black cloth cap. The horse has been recovered. Information to ho given to Superintendent Pearson Borough Police, Town Hall, Hah ax, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bout- street, September 17. Supposed to have been stolen from Great Brickhill, Bucks, on the 12th instant, a dark iron grey mare Pony, 8 years old, 13 hands high ; and a brown Colt, 2 years old, 14 hands high, without, shoes, was list seen at, Leighton Buzzard, Beds, going in the direction of London. Information to be given to Super- intendent Breary, Fenny Stratford, Bucks — Bow- stree', Sep- tember 14. Supposed stolen from a field in the township of Hoole, near Chester, on the 5th or 6th instant, an iron- grey cart Mare, about 8 years old, 1G h; mds b. gh, r. ther long and thick tail, white mark across oue fetlock, a few white haiis in ctutie of forehead. Information to be given to Superintendent G. E. Oldmeadow, County Police Office, Egerton street, Chester.— Bow- street, September 12. Stolen on the 10th instant, from Hatfield, a dafk brown Pony, aged, Hack le„' S, white spot on near side, a set of old Harness, a hemp Halter, and a dark green painted spring Cart, one wheel a little smaller than the other, with the name ' Jonas Pryor, Swavesey, Camhs,' on it. By a man 40 years ofnge, 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly built, round t ' ce, blue eyes, dark brown hair, sandy whiskers, and slight sandy moustache; he has been a soldier, and is supposed to be a pension r; he has for the last two months been residing at Bell Bar, Herts. Information to be given to Inspector Isgate, Hatfield, Herts.— Bow- street, September 12. Supposed to have been stolen on the 3rd instant, at Lam- berhurst, a black gelding Pony, about 12 hands hij; h, 4 years old, marked ' W,' under the saddle, and a bay Mare, 12 hands high, 5 years old, in good condition. Alsi on the night of the 10th instant, from Staddon, a grey mare Pony, 10 to 11 hands high, mark on the nose from a halter, several sores under the belly, in fair condition, Information to be given to Superin- tendent Dance, Police Court, Tunbridge, Kent.— Boio- strect, September 12. Stolen, between the 20th and 2oth June last, from a lane at Beekwith Shaw, a grey mate Pony, aged, 14 hand* high, colour changed on saddle to a brown; switch tail; both knees broken, but of lorn; standing. Infonnatioa to be given to Captain Oramsby, Superintendent of Police, Knaresborough.— Bow- street, September 10. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on the 14th instant from Great Grimsby, HENRY BARTELS, seaman, a nat've ot Hamburg, speaks pretty good English, about 21 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches hiah, brown mole on right side of nose, dark brown hair, no whiskers, and will be dressed as a sailor— charged with stealing from a sailor's boarding- house in King Edward- street, North Grimsby, the property of William Siser ;> L- d three other sea- men: a blue pilot monkey Jacket, a pair of pilot cloth Trousers, a tine blue cloth Vest, a silk Handkerchief, a fine black cloth Coat, with only one blight brass button near the throit, a pair of white flannel Drawers, a blue cloth Cap, a pair of dark grey Trou- ers, a black cloth Vest, a blue monkey Jacktt, and a pair of old Blucher Boots ( nearly the whole are new). Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Campbell, Town Hall, Grimsby, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, September 17. Absconded, charged with stealing Harness at Soham, on the 12th instant, a man of the following description, in whose possession the harness > vas found, at Biandon, on the 15th instant: a hawker of mats, brooms, & c., about middle age and height; dressed in a dark coat, blue guernsey, light trou- ers, and dark cap; had a small van drawn by a fox coloured mule, also a hooded cart and pony, and a red dog. A younger man in cord jacket, and three women who sell clothes pegs, travel with him, and left Brandon on the 15th, by the Thetford and Norwich- road. By a woman who lived at the house as servant, who absconded the same afternoon : SUSANNAH DELVES, alias WATERMAN, 32 years of age, 5 feet 1$ inch high, dark complexion, dark wavy hair, light eyes, sharp nose, proportionate make; dressed in an old brown waterproof dress with braid round the bottom, a rough brown waterproof cloak, and drab and blue silk bonnet with blve flowers ; she has been several times convicted. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, who holds a warrant for her appre- hension.— Bow- street, September 17. Augustine's Prison, Canterbury, for 4 mouths: MARK WINTERFELD, about 21 years of age, 5 feet Cinches high, dark whiskers, hair, and moustache ; and dressed in lar^ e pattern trousers, dark blue coat buttoned at the neck, and low- crowned brown felt hat; has the appearance of a German ; and ALFRED JOSEPH WINTERFELD, about 22 yeiirs of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light curly hair and whiskers, slight moustache ; dressed in a blue cloth coat buttoned at the neck, light tweed trousers, and a brown ldw- crowned hat; has also the appearance of a German. They stated that they were Hungarians in tike Austrian army, and have been residing at Dover for the lasit six months, and made frequent visits to the various towns in Kent and Sussex. H. 1 ley wood' marked with ink upon it; states that he is a surgeon, and has a small piactice at the above address, is single, and lias a housekeeper, also that he has an assistant at a shop at No. 2, Church- street, Commercial- road, London, E., states he has been to America, and eerved 4 years as a surgeon in the Federal Army, and was wounded slightly on the first finger of the right liaud by a sword cut, and also was shot through the thigh by a spent ball. He is remanded until the 15th inst. at Wisbech, charged with felony and also with obtaining goods under false pretences ; he pretends he has been to Australia and that he is going back, obtains goods from people at Wisbech under the pretence of taking them with him to their friends.
