No. 4203 MONDAY, JANUAKY 29, 1866, XoUcr.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made aud addressed to MR. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in tlie POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. A woman named Elizabeth Nelson was murdered on the night of the 11th instant, on the highway in the parish of Scotforth near Lancaster. A reward of £ 100 will be paid " by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the offender or offenders ; and Sir George Grey, Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious Pardon to any person ( not being the actual murderer) who will give such evidence as shall lead to the same result. In- formation to he given to Superintendent Clegg, Skerton, near Lancaster.— Bow- street, January 26. Between 8 a. m. and 3 p. m. on tho 14th instant, Edward Edwards, of Dudlick, near Stottesdon, Salop, was found, in Dudlick Mill, murdered and robbed of a morocco leather Pocket Book, containing a Memorandum Book and about £ 3 10s. in Gold and Silver. £ 50 reward is offered to any person giving such information as thall lead to the conviction of the murderer or murderers. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cureton, Shrewsbury, or to Superintendent McWilliam, Bridgnorth, Salop.— Bow- street, January 19. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING- About 6- 30 p. m. on the 24th instant, a wheat straw Stack situate in a field by the roadside at the parish of Great Marlow, was wilfully and maliciously set on fire, the whole of which was destroyed, tho property of Mr. James Plumbridge, of Great Marlow. Information to ha given to Inspector Mark- haD, Police Station, Great Marlow, BUCKS. - Bow- street, Jan. 29. Guard twisted like a rope. £ 5 reward will be given to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the Watch and Guard. Information to be given to Superintendent Etchells, Macclesfield.— Bow- street, January 22. On the 17tli instant, between 7 and 8 p. m., Mr. Arthur Battley was assaulted on tlie highway leading from Fornham, All Saints, to Bury St. Edmunds, and robbed of a gold Watch, white face, a piece' broken of the right hand edge, ' W. Ray' on the plate, No. 45120, with a gold Albert Chain and Seal attached ; a stereoscopic View of Christ's Sermon on the Mount; a plain gold Pin, with one diamond in the centre ; a gold Toothpick ; a leather folding Purse, without elastic, con- taining about 8s. Cd. in Silver, a bent Half Sovereign, and an American Dollar. A light drabbet drover's coat was found on the road a short distance from where the robbery took place. Information to be given to Inspector Roberts, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.— Bow- street, January 22. Stolen on the 18th instant from a gentleman, in Com- mercial- street, Spitalfields, a gold double- case Watch, maker Roskill, Liverpool, a gold curb Chain and two large gold Seals attached, one plain stone, the other cornelian engraved ' E. M. C.' By a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout made, fair complexion, no whiskers ; dressed in light coat and low- crowned hat. — Metropolitan Police, H Division, January 22. Description of a man who has absconded from Barnsley, charged with stealing from the person, about 2 p. m. on the 18th instant, a lady's gold lever Watch, with gold dial, gold chased edge, round bow, and consular case, maker Thomas Allen, Barnsley, No. 94476 : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, no whibkers, pimples on face ; diessed in black cloth coat, black necktie with red spots in it, silk hat, and supposed to have a waterproof overcoat on his arm. £ 1 reward is offered for the the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Barnsley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 19. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the night of the 21st instant, in Rishworth- street, Wakefield, a silver kver Watch, maker James Lovedny, No. 13025. £ 1 reward will be paid on the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Chesterfield, on the 22nd instant, a silver lever Watch, capped and jewelled, No. 5306( 1. Description of GEORGE CARTWRIGHT DOLBY, alias PEGGY DOLBY, drummer in the Holbeach Rifle Corps, who is charged with breaking a shutter and a pane of glass at a house in Holbeach, and stealing two small pork Pies, a pound Cake, two cheese Cakes, six preserve Puffs, 1 ; lb. of Sausages, and a Towol, the property of Martha Thompson, between 12 30 and 8 a. m. on the 20th instant: about 21 years of age, 0 feet 1 or 2 inches high, pale dirty complexion, rather weak eyes, brown liair, little or no whiskers, rather slight. built; dressed in brown cloth coat with velvet collar, black cloth vest, dirty cotton cord trousers, and rifle cap or old black billycock hut. lutormation to be given to Inspector W. Tonle,' engraved on the cao inside, had attached a lady's thin gold BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between the hours of 12 noon, and 4 p. m on the 20th instant, a house at Mitcheltrey, Monmouthshire, was broken into, aud stolen therefrom : a pair of black cloth Trousers a piece let in on the pockets; a pair of light watertight Boots, no nails, and new ; an old pair of ditto, much worn ; a cord Vest, nearly new ; 2 pairs of worsted Stockings ; 1 blue velvet cap ; 1 red flannel Shirt; 1 check ditto ; 1 light cotton Hand- kerchief; and 3id. in Coppers. Supposed by a tramp, about 31 years of age, 5 feet 4J or 5 inches high, proportionate make, dark hair, and whiskers shaved off ; dressed in dark grey coat, light vest, stolen trousers, can, and boots, . soldier like appear- ance, aud stated he had belonged to the 48th Regiment ; his own trousers and one boot and one clog were left at the house, the clog was marked ' Wigan Union' and the boot is an old lace- up one. During the night of the 21st iostaut, the dwelling- house of Mr. Benjamin Day, farmer, at Harwell, Berks, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 1 double- case silver Geneva Watch, nearly new, with ' Bezant, Abingdon ' on the inside of back case, and • Hammond & Son' on the dial plate, steel hands, had a piece of narrow black ribbon attached. Ismail brown cotton Bag, containing three or four half Sovereigns, and twelve or fifteen Shillings in Silver. 1 black cloth frock Coat, with black watered silk facings, double breasted, and black cloth buttons. 1 dark mixture clo^ h Coat, with the pockets on the hips. 1 black cloth Vest, without a collar. 1 grey cloth Vest. 2 white silk pocket Handkerchiefs, with yellow figured border, about 3 inches wide, one of th em marked ' T. B. Day ' with red thread. Supposed by two tramping blacksmiths, who were seen near the premises, the evening previous to the burglary, and were on the following- morning dressed in the stolen clothes : one, about 25 years of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionate make, thin features, sandy beard, and wears a tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in the black cloth coat, dark cord trousers, dark cloth cap with peak, very old lace- up boots, a large piece cut out of the Bide of uppers of one of the boots, he also wears a blacksmith's leather apron round his waist. The other, is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, very thin features, slightly made, and dhrk brown hair; dressed in the dark mixture cloth coat, grey tweed trousers much worn " at the ankles, and low- crowned Mack hat; both - have a dirty appearance. Information to be given to Superin- tendent O'Neill, Constabulary Station, Wantage, Berks.— Bow- street, January 29, On the 25th instant,' between the hours of 7 a. m. and 5' 30 p. ifl., the cottage of John Webb, situate at It& ysbn- hill, in the parish of Berrow, was broken and entered, by forcing the door open with a potato fork, and a Half- sovereign, and other Silver and Copper Monies, amounting in all to about 30s,, was stolen therefrom. Information to be gjiven to Superintendent George Checketts, Police Office, Upton- on- Severn, Worcestershire.— 7 Bow- street, January 29, During the night of the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of William Caterer, Watlington, Oxon, was broken into and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom : 1 blue pilot Coat, red and black plaid lining, torn at the back of neck or collar. 1 Shawl, black and white check centre and red border, has been burnt in several small places near the centre, and darned. 1 light brown linen Dress, trimmed with brown braid. 1 narrow striped flannel Shirt, violet and white, nearly new, four buttons in front. 1 ditto, violet and brown stripe. 1 ditto, bright scarlet, whole colour. 1 pair of lady'h flannel Drawers. 2 pairs of gentleman's ditto, with broad band or stays, marked ' R. N. P.' 2 Nightgowns, one marked ' M. A. Belcham,' and one ' L. M. B.,' with plain frill round neck and sleeves. 1 Chemise, marked ' M. A. B.', with frill round neck and sleeves. Information to be given to Superintendent Seers, Police Station, Watlington, Oxon.— Bow- street, January 29. Between the 22nd ultimo and the 17th instant, a dwelling- house at Dorney, Bucks, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen tirerefrom : a black and white plaid Scarf Shawl, a grey tweed Shawl, a plum- coloured ditto, three old linen Sheets, marked ' Winter*; three old calico ditto, two Table Cloths, two Pillow Cases, two Chemises, a black quilted Petticoat, and a brown Hamper ( in which it is supposed the other articles were carried away). Information to be given to Sergeant Moore, Burnham, Bucks - Bow- street, January 29. During the night of the 22nd instant, the house of Geo- Barwick, situate at Dunton Basset, Leicestershire, was bur- glariously entered, and a quantity of Gold and Silver stolen therefrom, which has since been recovered : By W. ELLSON, a labourer, 24 years of age. 5 feet 4} inches high, 6tout made, light hrown hair, prey eyes, fresh complexion, oval face, has a scar on the back of left band, the knuckle of right fore finger is larger than the others, and a native of Dunton Bassett; dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Deakins, Lutterworth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 26. On the night of the 23rd instant, Sedgehill House, near Hindon, in the occupation of George T. Bullock, Esq., was burglariously broken into by boring through the shutters with an inch centre bit, aud the following property stolen : a silver Inkstand, with crest— five battle axes, with a wreath around them, and an eagle's wing with snake around it, and initials ' G. T. B.'; a silver Sugar Bowl and Sifter, same crest; a silver Milk Pail and Ladle ; a silver Fish Carver and Fork ; two small Spoons and Forks for children ; a Vinaigrette ; a flat ' silver Box, with monogram engraved in the centre ' B. A. G. B.'; some gold and silver Coins ; a gold Thimble, blue enamel circle ; a plain silver ditto : a double Scent Bottle, with silver gilt tops ; two £ 5 Bank of England Notes ; and £ 6 10s. in Gold. Two men are suspected, of the following description : one about 30 years of age, and dressed in black coat with pockets in sido seams ; the other about 25 years of age, hair cut short, and dressed in dark coat. Information to he given to Superintendent Daun, Hindon, Wilts.— Bow- street, Jan. 26. Between 5 and 10 p. m. on the 21st instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Denny Cook, boot and shoemaker, llickinghall, West Suffolk, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 22 pairs women's kid Boots, with military heels, elastic sides, black soles. 4 pairs ditto, livetted, 5 pairs ditto, csshmere, 4 pairs leather, laced 111 front. 6 pairs cashmere, laced in front. } 6 pairs, various makes. 11 pairs children's Memel, three pairs with copper toes. 4 pairs mcu's Balmorals, nearly all black bottoms, with the price marked on the linings. Information to be given to Inspector Utting, Stanton, or to Superintendent Durrant, Police Station, Ixworth, West Suffolk.— Bow- street, January 26. During the night of the 22nd instant, the dwelling- house of John Anstice, Esq., at Madeley Wood, Salop, was broken into, and the following property stolen, therefrom ; 1 silver verge Watch, plain figures on dial, the case much worn. 2 silver Tea Spojns, with engraved crest— a plume of five feathers. 1 small Sugar Ladle, with engraved monogram ' WA.' Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the con- viction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 55 reward. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Collis, Shropshire Constabulary, Madeley, Salop.— Bew- stroet, January 26. Stolen between 5 p. m. on the 20tli and 5 a. m. on the 22nd instant, by means of skeleton keys, from an engine- house and store- room at New Hadley Colliery, a red and blue plush Waistcoat, moleskiu back and sleeves, p « arl or bone buttons, and has recently been washed ; one optical engine Brass, about 7 inches long and 5^ inches in diameter ; and three ditto ditto, about 4 inches long and 2J- inches in diameter. Information to be given to Chief Superintended Richardson, Wellington, or to Police Constable Purchase, Oakengates, galop,— Bow- street, January 26. Farther information respecting the horary at tike farm- house of Kirkfon of Auchterhouse, advertised in the Police Gazette of th* 15th instaut : oue of the burglars has been apprehended, and the Watch recovered ; the other burglars ate still at large, and none of the Notes have been recovered or traced. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Forfarshire, Forfar.— Bow- street, January 24. On the night of the 21st or early on the - morning of the 22nd instant, a dwelliug- housa in the borough of Sheffield was burglariously entered, and the following property stoieu there- from : four silver Tea Spoons, marked ' S. B.' ; a pair of Sugar Tongs, with crest— a hand grasping a scorpion ; a silver Cream Jug, antique pattern, marked ' P. A. B.'; three silver Cruet Tops,; a NetSklmx or Chain of blue Bohemian pearl beads; three Links of Beads leaded on blue silk ; a bead Chain ( 12 01- 1* 4 JinksT, 12 or 14 iriches'long ; a Necklace of square pearl beads, about 1 yard long. During the night of the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Henry Richardson, of Keynsham, Somerset, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : an old- fashioned silver Cream Jug, stands on four small round feet ; twelve very small old- fashioned silver Te& Spoons, chased edges, marked with two letters ; six silver ditto, plain, marked ' W. J. A.' in old English ; a stiver Table Spoon, same mark ; four silver Salt Spoons; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs; two pairs cossack Boots, one pair new, the other about half worn out; a long blue Overcoat, with black silk covered buttons, a pocket outside for railway, tickets, lined with light plaid lining; a black cloth Overcoat, lined with blue lining; and £ 5 in. Gold. Information to be given to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud.— Bow- street, January 22. On the 10th instant, between 3 and 10 p. m. j the dwelling- honse of Jessy Drury, of Swaby, near Alford, was broken into, and the following articles stolen therefrom : 1 black cloth Jacket, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, and about halfworn. 1 pair of black cloth Trousers. 1 black cloth Vest, buttons up to the throat. 1 plaid Vest. 1 pair of Short Wellington Boots, a small strip of red leather round the top of each boot inside, part worn. 2 pairs of grey worsted Stockings. 1 gold wedding Ring, a little bent. Supposed by a man about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light complexion and hair, little or no whiskers ; dressed in a black cloth coat, the back in one pieoe, a pocket on eaoh side, blue trousers, a dark woollen shirt, no vest. Another man was in his company, and has been apprehended, but none of the stolen articles have been found. Information to be given to be given to Inspector Groom, Police Station, Alford, Lincoln- shire.— Bow- street, January 22. During the night of the 15th instant, the shop of Mr. E. Jennings, grocer, of Fowler- atreet, in the borough of South Shields, was entered by skeleton keys, and stolen therefrom : £ 3 in Copper, and 3 or 4 lbs. of shag Tobacco, put up in packages, viz, two £ lbs. and the remainder 2 oz. 1 oz. and £ oe. and about 1 lb. of twist, the shag Tobacco was wrapped in blue paper, and labelled Jennings.' Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, Borough Police, South Shields.— Bow- street, January 19. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Further particulars of the Pony supposed stolen from Crawley, Beds, advertised in the Poliee Gazette of the 12th instaut : no trace of it has yet been discovered ; a- strangeman, 5 feet 1.0 inches high, 30 years of age, dark complexion ; dtessed in dark coat, cord breeches, leat her leggings, . carried n carpet bag, and has the appearance of a horsedealer, disappeared from the neighbourhoed about the time the pony was missed. He came tp Woburn Fair on the 1st instant, and sold a bay. nag horse, 15 hands high, 5 years old, and stayed until the 8th inst., he said he ctaue from Southampton, and was going to North- ampton, but is said to have been seen in the neighbourhood of Cucshain, Bucks, with a brush and mat cart; he had with the hvise lie sold a bridle and saddle, and it is not known what bepame of it, as it was not seen in his possession after he sold the horse, in the fair. They are all Irish, but speak English well, and are supposed to have com- mitted offences elsewhere. About 1 7p. worth of Coppers was found upon the female prisoner. Also of two men and a woman committed at Oldham on the 18th instant lor trial at the ensuing Salford Sessions, for uttering counterfeit Sovereigns and Half- Sovereigns : JOHN THOMPSON, alias ROLAND DAVIES, about 60 years of age, 6 feet inches high, grey hair and eyes, cut mark on left side of chin, and dressed in a brown and white coat bound with braid, light coloured vest, light woollen trousers, black silk hat, and blucher shoes; RICHARD TURNER, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 3i inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair and whiskers, genteel appearance, and dressed in a black cloth walking coat, black cloth trousers with fly fronts, black silk velvet vest, blue pilot overcoat with raised seams and black velvet collar, elastic- side boots, black low crowned hat, nickerbockers, and a gold hoop on his finger ; speaks a south English accent; and MARY ANN DAVIES, about 48 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh com- plexion, bloated face, brown hair, grey eyes, has lost left arm, and dressed in a brown stuff dress, which fastens up the front, with brass buttons, two shawls, one pepper and salt, the other a striped, black straw bonnet trimmed with light ribbon and blue and white flower in front, and appears to be of drunken habits. Description of GEORGE COWPER, alias CHARLES BROWN, alias MARTIN GRIFFEN, who is remanded till the 27th instant, charged with felony : states he is 39 years of age, but looks older, about 5 feet 7 inches high, thin make, dark complexion, thin face, badly pockpitted, bushy whiskers, dark brown hair, bald on top of head, generally wears his cap when in doors, active appearance, and rather peculiar voice ; dressed in dark cloth cap with peak, dark grey overcoat with pockets at the side, dark trousers, says he is a sailor, and generally dresses as such ; he is in the habit of robbing his lodgings, and decamping with the stolen articles while the inmates are asleep. A glazier's Diamond, quite new, without handle, and a Pawn- ticket for a guernsey frock were found on him. It is strongly snspected that he has committed offences elsewhere.
