POLICE GAZETTE. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Re, - ers of Stolen Goods, reputes Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Proper£ that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4197 MONDAY, JANUAKY 15, 186G. Notice.— It is, requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person tequiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with ' he Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Offi « j! v Pall Mall, Loudon, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 8th instant the body of a full grown female child was found in- the River Avon, in the parish of Harvington, Worcestershire, it was enclosed in the leg of a man's stocking, and is supposed to luve been dead about a fortnight. A coroner's inquest was held, and a verdict of ' Willul Murder against sotne person or persons unknown ' was returned. la- formation to be given to Superintendent Harris, Pershore, Worcestershire.— bow- street, January 12. The body of a newly- born female Child was found on the doorstep of a dwelling- house in Sheffield, on the evening of the Oth inBtant, wrapped in part of an old green plaid stuff skirt. At a coroner's inqm- st, held on the following day, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. Information to ba given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield.— Bou>- street, January 12. Description of FREDERICK SYMONS, a bricklyayer, a native of King's Lynn, Noilolk, who absconded from Wis- beach on the 30th ultimo, after causing the death of Charles George Rutherford ; an inquest was held gn the 8th instant, and a verdict of ' Manslaughter' was returned. He is about 23 years of age, 5 f* et 3 inches high, light hair, no whiskers, light complexion, thin pale face, hollow cheeks; dresses as a bricklayer, and sometimes wears a blue monkey jacket and Scotch cap with ribbon behind. Information to be given to Head Constable Eason, Wisbeach, I- le of Ely, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 10. On the afternoon of the 24th ultimo, the body of a full grown female Child was found drowned in the river Lugg, near the Railway Station, Leominster. A coroner's inquest was held on the 26th ultimo, on the body, and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder ' was returned against some person or persons unknown. £ 60 reward will be p lid by Her Majesty's Gover- ment to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the conviction of the murderer of murderers, and Sir George Grey, Her Majesty's Secretary or State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the one who actually committed the murder. Alexauder, Chief of Police, Leomister, Herefordshire.— Bow strut, January 1. lever Watch, capped and jewelled, engine- turned cases, maker Charles Snowden, London, No. 10022, and ' F. P. W.' stamped on the swivel ; and a Pocket Knife with two blades, one of which is broken, has a black aud white bone haft. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ball, Court House, Brad- ford.— Bow- street, January 12. Stolen about 11- 30 p. m. on the 23rd ultimo, from the person of a gentleman, in this city, a gold lever Watch, maker Gilbert, Coventry, No. 18166, white dial, steel bauds, outside of the inner case is the following inscription, ' Presented to William Griffiths, by the workmen at Wolverton Station. Any person giving such information as will lead to* the appre- hension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watch, will receive £ 5, reward. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Godby, B Division Police Station, Livesey Street, or at any of the Police Stations in Manchester.— Bow- ttrect, January 10. Stolen from a gentleman about 3 p. m. on the Oth instant, in the County Court at Newcastle- under- Lyme, a lady's gold double- backed lever Watch, No. 72518. £ 2 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender. Information to be given to Superintendent Williams, Newcastle- under- Lyme, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, January 10. Supposed stolen from the person in Bolton, the following Watches : A German silver Watch with steel Chain attached. A silver verge ditto with loose case, has ' J. Drinnan' engraved on back of inner case. A silver lever ditto, maker Esplin, Wigan, No. 2360, has a silver dial and gold figures. A silver Chronometer, No. 6493 or 35382. A silver lever ditto. A silver lever ditto, maker Rigby, Liverpool, No. 3111, ' Joseph Haigh, 1860' engraved outside the case. Information to be given to Chief Constable Harris, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 5. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the Borough of Bolton, on the 1st instant, a silver lever Watch, maker Esplin, Wigan, No. 2359, silver dial, and gold figures. £ 1 reward will be paid on the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Chief Constable Harris, Borough Police Office, Bolton,— Bow- street, January 5. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING- About ! i' 30 p. m. on the 29rh ultimo, a wheat straw stack, in a field on the Baldersby and Ainderby Bridle Road- side, near Baldersby, was dtstroyed by fire. Supposed by an incen- diary. Information to bo given to Superintendent Walmsley, Leyburn, or to Sergeant, Metcalfe, Wath, near Ripon, York- shire.— Bow- street, January 3. FORGERY- Obtained by fa'se pretences, on the 22nd ultimo, from No. 4, Upper Park- place, Dorset square, Marylebone, £ 6 10s.; also on the same date, from 35, Upper Park- place, Maryleboae, by a forged cheque, £ 4 10s. By CHARLES FIELD, 36 years of age, 6 feet high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair and moustache, whiskers shaved off; dressed in dark clothes and hat; gentlemanly appearance, frequents the neighbourhood of Covent garden. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, January 8. ROBBERY AND LARCENY EEOH TKE PERSON. Supposed to have been stolen from tho person of George Dobb, at Tong Street, at 11 p. m. on the 8th instant, a silver BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. About 1 a. m. on the 10th instant, the farmhouse of Kirkton of Auchterhouse, in the county of Forfar, was broken aud entered by three men with blackened faces, who demanded, under threats of personal violence to the inmates, obtained, and carried away the following property : 1 gold lever Watch, almost new, makers Whytock and Sons, Dundee, No. 63385, ' J. P.' on back of outside case. 1 £ 20 Note of the Royal Bank of Scotland. 2 £ 10 Notes of the Commercial Bank. 6 £ 5 Notes of the Clydesdale Bank. 10 £ 1 Notes of various Bauks. £ 4 in silver Money. The burglars will probably proceed to a seaport for the purpose of emigrating, and theie dispose of the watch and exchange the notes. Information to be giveiT to the Chief Constable of Forfarshire, Forfar.— Bow- street, January 15. During the night of the 10th instant, the dwelling- house of G. F. Birch, E> q., J. P., Clare Park, Crondall, Hants, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen there- from : ten or twelve Table Napkins, marked * 1859— G. F. Birch— 36 ;' a Tablecloth ; an Antimacassar, white crochet ; a silver Tea Spoon ; a silver Sugar Sifter; a silver wine Label, • Madeira ;' a silver Shell for measuring tea, crest— a serpent entwined round a fleur- de- lis; a large Bread Knife, wooden handle, with ears of corn carved on it; also a small quantity of Tea and Sugar. £ 10 reward will be given for information that will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information he given to Superintendent Howard, Hants Con- stabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, January 15. On the night of the Oth instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Fowle, watchmaker, Uckfield, Sussex, was broken and entered, and some Provisions and two small Pots of Jam stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Police Constable James Newnham, Uckfield, or at any Police Station in East Sussex. — Bow- street, January 12. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the absence of the family at chapel, on the night of the 7th instant, a gold hunting Geneva Watch, plated dial and dome, cases rather light, and had a gold plated curb guard Chain attached. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Danily, Newtown, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 10. Between 10 30 p. m. on the'- 8th and 6 a. m. on the Oth inst., the dwelling- house of Mr. Thomas Wigfield, of Alma- road, Rotlierham, grocer, was entered through the kitchen wiudow, and the following articles stolen therefrom : 1 dark ribbed cloth Overcoat, with velvet collar, has two pockets behind and one in front of left breast; in one of the p. ckets was a cream- coloured silk Handker- chief, with amber and peach border, marked ' Thos. Wigfield, Xmas, 1865.' 4 silver Tea Spoons, old- fashioned, marked ' W,' 6 ditto, fiddle pattern, marked ' W.' 4 Bilver Salt Spoons and two ditto Table Spoons, fiddle pattern, marked ' W.' 1 silver Dessert Spoon, old- fashioned, marked ' M. A.' on one side and ' S.' on the other. On the night of the 8th instant the dwelling- house of Mrs. Boomer, of Moorgate, Rotherham, widow, was entered in the same manner, and the following articles stolen therefrom : 6 silver Tea Spoons and 4„ ditto Table Spoons, old- fashioned, and marked ' B.' 2 silver Salt Spoons. 1 silver Mustard Spoon. 1 pair silver Sngar Tongs. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillett, Court House, Rotherham, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 10. During the night of the 7th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Dobinson, No. 1, Cecil- street, North Shields, was entered by forcing the back door, during the absence of the family, and the following property stolen : £ 5 10s. in Gold, a Half- Crown and three Three penny Pieces in Silver, and four Half- pence iu Copper ; si's silver Tea Spoons, marked ' L.'; two silver Salt Spoons, marked ' D.'; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' E: L.; a silver Sugar Spoon ; and two Butter Knives. Information to be given to Chief Constable J Hewett, Tyne- uaouth, Northumberland.— Bern- street, January 10. Stolen during the night of the 2nd instant, from a dwelling- house in Wakefield, by means of housebreaking : 4 Bilver tea Spoons, marked ' II. K.' and a flower. 1 silver tea Spoon, marked ' H.' 2 silver dessert Spoons. 2 ladies' gold wrist Links. 1 white diaper table Cloth. 2 german silver table Spoons. 1 pair of gexaan silver sugar Tongs. 1 german silver salt Spoon. " 1 gold plaled Locket, containing the likeness of a young lady. 1 pair of gentlemen's elastic- side Boots, with gutta percha bottoms, newly soled. £ 1 reward will be given for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Mr. James McDonnold, Chief Constable of the Borough of Wake- field.— Bow- street, January 8. Stolen on the night of the 2nd instant, at Bramdean Common, near Alresford, by means of housebreaking, a flannel Shirt, nearly new, without sleeves; 6 yards of new Calico; a new lavender print Apron, without strings : two white Shirts, much worn, plain fronts; a pair of blucher Boots, much worn, half tip off the right boot behind, cleets on toes; a pair of leather Leggings, nearly new ; a tin Can or Bottle, about three pints ; the property of James Paice. Also, on the same night, from the dwelling- house of James Jones, two blue cotton Shirts, one nearly new, ironmould between the shoulders and two small holes, the other quite new, unfinished, a sleeve and binders to go on, whicn were rolled up in the shirt; a pair of grey worsted Stockings, the toes cut off and pieces of flannel sewn on the heels with blue worsted ; a pair of old cord Trousers, mended in several places ; aud a black whalebone Whip, with about ten or twelve brass ferrules. A navvy is suspected, a young man, stout built, dressed in white slop, cord or fustian trousers, and billycock hat; carries a pack or bundle at his back, and had in his possession a tin can answering the description of the one stolen ; he was traced as far as Farnham, Surrey, which place he left on the evening of the 3rd instant, by train for Horsham, West Sussex : will roost likely seek for employment on railways or other public works. Information to be given to Superintendent Everitt, Winchester, or to Serjeant Bennett, Hants Constabulary, Alresford.— Bow- street, January 8. During the night of the 4th instant, the dwelling- house of the Rev. A. J. Slight, of Alkmonton, was broken and entered and the following property stolen : a yellow and purple knitted silk Purse, with steel clasp and yellow tassel at bottom, con- taining four Two- shilling Pieces, a Half- crown, and some Shillings and Sixpences ; a quantity ' of qld Pennies, Half- pennies, and Farthings, one farthing of the reign of Queen Anne, and a quantity of pennies and half- pennies of the reign of King George III. Two men tramps of the following des- cription are suspected : one about SOyears of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, light hair and complexion, no whiskers, small tuft of sandy hair ou chin ; dressed, in a brown fustian jacket, cord trousers, low black crowned hat, and strong lace- up boots. The other about 20 j ears of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black curly hair, blue eyes, no whiskers, small feet; dressed in old dark coloured cloth clothes, and light pair of boots. A pair of blue knitted stocking feet were fouud on the lawn near Mr. Slight's house, Information to be given to Superintendent Corbishley, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, January 8. During the night of the 1st instant, a dwelling- house at Darlingsoott, Worcester, was broken aud entered, and the following property was stolen : 1 old pilot cloth Coat, lined, with red and black plaid lining. 1 black cloth Waistcoat with small roll collar. 1 pair of strong water- tight Boots. 1 pair of men's walking Boots, sprigged on the sales, and the right one much worn on the toe. During the n'ulit of tile 30t h ultimo, the cottage of James Allen, at Chisbury, iu the parish of Little Bedwin, was broken into, and the following property stofeh : a pair of Balmoral Boots, tipped and nailed with small found- headed nails, about half worn ; a dark brown cloth Overcoat, siugle bteasted, pockety iu sides, one breast pocket, plaid linings, about halt worn ; two bl ck billycock hats, neaily new ; a ehort fustian Slop; a coarse hand Towel, fringed at one end. supposed maiked ' A.>'; a hock of cooked Bacon, and about 5 lbs. of uncooked ditto. Further information respecting the burglary comtaitted at the Duke of Somerset's, at Maiden Bradley, Wilts, on the night of the 4th, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 11th ' ultimo, when the following property was sft- len : ft long gold and plitins guard Chain, eight gold vest Buttons, cable pattern, and a large gold mourning Ring. A man of the lollowin » description is atrongty i- uspeoted : about 35 years of age, o feet 10 inches high, light hair ( cut short), beard and whiskers shaved pif, full fiice Willi small blotches on it, has a mark under his chin, J iu. wide, apparently from scrofula or a burn, bald on top of head, stout build, square shoulders, walks erect and with a firm step, and is quiet in manner ; was dressed in a light- coloured bowler hat, light- coloured cloth overcoat, and coloured woollen cord trousers, fitting lather tight ; has the appearance of a pugilist, stops at public- houses, usually drinks cider or brandy Mid water, and is remarkably quiet and temperate He uses c | chisel in breaking open drawers, boxes, & c.; alter a robbery he has been traced to take an early train. £ 20 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender. Stolen from a cottage at Buriton, Hants, between 9 a. m. and 8 p. m. on the 1st instant, hy means of housebreaking: 1 black cloth Coat, two pockets outside. 2 pairs of black cloth Trousers. 1 pair ot dark tweed ditto. 1 black cloth Vest. 1 black woollen ditto. 3 white calico Shirts, with linen fronts, 1 blue Shirt. 1 pair of half Wellington Boots, nearly new, with leather straps. 1 low- crowned hat. 1 light coloured silk Handkerchief. 1 white linen Slop, buttons down the front. 1 grey wool en Cape, bound with black, with white beaded collar. Information to be given to Superintendent Longland, Peters- field, Hants.— Bow street, January 3. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed stolen between the hours of C p. m. on the 7th, and 8 a. m. on the 8th instant, from a field at Purston- Jaglin, a ewe Sheep, of the Lincolnshire breed, marked ' D. L.' on the near hip, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Pontefract — Bow- street, January 15. Supposed stolen on the 24th ultima, fiom a field in the parish of Burwash, a grey Pony, a^ ed, about 13 hands high, and rather low in condition. Information to be giveu at the Chief Office, Lewes; to Deputy Chief Constable Thompson, Battle ; or to Sergeant W. Pocock, Burwash, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 15. Stolen between 7 and 8 p. m. on the 12th instant, from the ' Queen's Arms' inn, Cowden, the property of Thomas Gilritt, a brown cob Mare, 14 hands high, 7 years old, white star on forehead, and black mane and tail; and a spring Cart, painted brown, with owner's name on it. Supposed by two men, one in a blue guernsey, who were seen going in the direction of London. Information to be given to Superintendence Dance, Police Court, Tunbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, January 15. Supposed stolen on the 28th ultimo, from Hounslow, a black horse Pony, 12^ hands high, saddle marked, rough coat, and in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, January 12. Supposed to have been stolen on 1st November, 1864, from Staines Moor, a light browu mare Pony, 6 years old, black legs and tail, in good condition ; supposed to have since foaled. Advertised in the Police Gazette of the 23rd Novem ber, 1864.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, January 12. Supposed stolen, from Crawley, Beds., between the 6th and 8th instant, a roau Pony, 12 hands high, 6 years old, ' R.' branded on the near side under the saddle, tand crack on off fore foot. Information to be given to Superintendent Young, Woburn, Beds.— Bow- street, January 12. Further information respecting ROBERT SAVAGE, alias MINNIFER, alias THE LITTLE MAN, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th instant, charged with stealing a Donkey at Halesworth : he was seen at Scole, Norfolk, on the 5th instant ; he may have with hun a light hand cart, with shafts, painted green, with the name of ' John Gooch, dealer, Halesworth,' on it; be sometimes hawks herrings, and also buys skins. Information to be given to Sergeant Taylor, lialesworth, East Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bo m- street, January 12. Supposed to liaVe been stolen from a field in the parish of Wyrardisbury, Bucks, between the 1st and 3rd instant, a light grey Mare, 6 years old, about 14 bauds high, long switch tail, in medium condition. She was either taken, or strayed in the direction of Staines. Information to be given to Super intendent Hodgkinson, Slough, Bucks.— Sow s!., January 10. Supposed to have been stolen from the Wern Farm, Merthyr Tydvil, on the 25tli ultimo, a mouse- coloured grey horse Pony, 3 years old, 12 hands high, dark grey inane and switch tail squared a little at the end. Also, from a field Ystradbarwicli, Glamorganshire, ou the 16th ultimo, a bay Hare and horse Colt: the mare is 4 years old, 13 or 14 hands high, white streak down the face, whiie mark on the tiff hind leg and marks of blistering, black mane and tail; the colt is a light bay, rising 2 years old, 11 or 12 hands hands high, white star in the forehead, White mark on the off hind leg, and long tail, never having been cut. Information to be given to Super- intendent Thomas, Glamorgan Constabulary, Pontypridd.— Bono street, January 8. Supposed to have been stolen from Wonersh, Surrey, on the 25th ultimo, a dark iroti- grey horse Pony, rising 5 years old, 12 or 13 hands high, white star oil forehead, black mane end tail ( cut square, and reaches to its hocks), and in good con- dition. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable, Guildford.— Bow- street, January 5. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from stables at Mitcham : a brown Mare, 14J hands high, white star on forehead ; a light spring Van, painted dark green, name ' William Knight, Carrier, Mitcham' ; a hothead of leaf Tobacco, marked ' I. Z. O. 377,' weight 1.487 lbs., covered with a Tarpaulin, marked ' Edginton.' Supposed went in the direction of London. Metropolitan Police, W Division, January 5. Supposed stolen froin u field at Church Gresley, Derby- shire, between iO p. m. the 2Gth and 7 a. m. the 27th ultimo, a dark brown bay Horse, 15 hands high, black legs, mane, and tail ( the latter cut square), black nose, rough coat, broken Winded, and in very poor condition. Information to be given to Police Constable Sims, Church Gresley, near Burton- on- Treut, or at any Police Station in Derbyshire.— Bow- street, January 5. Supposed to have been stolen from Binsey, near Oxford, on the 18tli ultimo, the property ot Mr. Kerwood, a light chesnut Pony, rather lop ears, and has a scar on the near hip. C.' on right breast, lump or boil on left jaw. States he was convicted at Wandsworth for stealing a silver brooch, and sentenced to two months' imprisonment. He was convicted at Dudley last September, and sentenced to Worcester Gaol for two months for felony ; is supposed to have been in custody at Ludlow for stealing lead, and to have been in many other gaols.
