Staff, Town Clerk. NOTTINGHAM. I am not officially in possession of the register. My official list of the freemen is, as directed by the Act, delivered to the revising barristers; and, after having been corrected and signed by them, is delivered over to the returning officer, the sheriff, and I lose all authority over it. It is consequently not with me to make the official return. The total number of municipal electors on the register in the town of Nottingham after the revision of 1837 was 2,583. The register does not set forth any particulars from which to enable me to make an official return of the further circumstances required by your letter. It contains only the name of each voter, and the nature and situation of his rated property, but makes no mention of any other qualification. I have, however, ( from a wish to furnish what information I could procure,) been at the pains and expense of obtaining from a well informed quarter the following particulars:— Number of freemen on the Parliamentary register for 1837, 2,738 ; of whom, not entitled to vote by other qualification, 2,019; and of whom, not municipal electors, 2,308 : 693 of these do not reside, or occupy, in Nottingham, but within seven miles. Of the 2,583 municipal electors on the register, as above- stated, 659 are not qualified to vote for Members of Parliament; and, of the remainder, there are 700 who are qualified to vote as freemen only for Members of Parliament. 23 December 1837. H. Enfield, Town Clerk. OSWESTRY. The borough of Oswestry does not return any Member to Parliament, and I therefore conceive that the return which you require to be made, in pursuance of a resolution of the House of Commons, dated the 30th November 1837, ' s not applicable to this town. 8 January 1838.
