AT THE LAST GENERAL ELECTION. 37 COUNTY OF SOMERSET. Number of Electors named in the Registers for 1836- 7. Eastern Division ------ 9,561 Western Division 8,854 The number of electors who polled at the last general election, for the Western Division, was 7,313; there was no contest for the Eastern Division. The preparation of returns, according to the classification mentioned, would necessarily occupy a considerable portion of time; as to the latter return, the number prefixed in the poll- books to the name of each elector must, in every instance, be sought for in the register of electors to complete the return, and I cannot form any idea when returns of this magnitude could be com- pleted. They can only be prepared by the employment of additional clerks; and, if the classification should still be required, I should feel very much obliged if you could point out some way in which I could obtain remuneration for their services.
