• ON THE LOCAL TAXATION OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN, 319 after the death, decease, vacancy or removal of such alderman or aldermen, from time to time for ever elect and make one, or as many as may be wanting, of the said number of twenty- four aldermen, out of the free burgesses of the said city of Dublin, in the place or places of such alderman or aldermen so dead or amoved, to continue in their offices during their natural lives, if they should so long well behave themselves in their said offices; and that they, or those who hereafter may be nominated or elected aldermen in the said city, shall take their corporal oaths before the mayor of the said city, for the time being, well and faithfully to execute the said office in all things concerning the same, and the other oaths aforesaid, and may hold and exercise the said office during their respective natural lives, if so long they and each of them respectively shall continue and well conduct himself or themselves in said office, to which mayor for the time being, We do by these presents give and grant by these presents, power and authority to give and administer said oaths; We will also, and by these presents for us, our heirs and successors, do give, grant and confirm to the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the city of Dublin and their successors, that if any person who shall be as aforesaid elected to the office of mayor or alderman within the said city of Dublin, shall refuse to undertake the burthen and execution of the said office, and perform the duty for which he is so elected and perfected, that then and so often as such person so elected and perfected shall so refuse, the mayor and the rest of the common council of the said city of Dublin for the time being, or the major part of them, shall from time to time, and at all times hereafter, have full power and authority of assessing, taxing and imposing any reasonable fine, penalty or sum of money on such person so elected and perfected, and to be elected and perfected, and who shall in such manner refuse to undertake the said office of mayor or alderman of the said city of Dublin, and the burthen and execution of the same respectively, provided that such fine, penalty or sum of money shall not exceed the sum of 200/. legal money of England; and if and as often as any such person ( on whom any such fine, penalty or sum of money, in the manner and for the reason aforesaid, shall be imposed, taxed or assessed) shall not pay the said fine, penalty or sum of money, or deny or refuse paying the same at such time or times as the said common council of the said city of Dublin for the time being, or the major part of them shall decree or appoint, that then and so often the said mayor, sheriffs and commons, and citizens of the said city of Dublin for the time being, and their successors from time to time, shall and may have, by means of these presents, full power and authority to levy, collect and recover every such fine, penalty or sum of money, by distringas or action of debt, or on the case, in any court of us, our heirs or successors, in the name of the mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city of Dublin, against any such person not paying or refusing to pay such fine, penalty or sum of money upon him in manner aforesaid imposed, or to be imposed, his executors and administrators respectively, or by any other usual and lawful ways or means whatsoever, and the same to the use and behoof of them, the mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city for the time being, and their successors, to detain and dispose: We will also, and by these presents, for us, our heirs and successors, do give, grant and confirm to the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city of Dublin, and their successors, that if any person who shall, in manner aforesaid, be elected and perfected into the office of sheriff of the said city and county of the said city of Dublin, shall deny or refuse to undertake the burthen and execution of the said office, and to exercise the said office of sheriff of the said city and county of the said city of Dublin aforesaid, to which he shall be so elected and perfected as aforesaid, that then and so often as the case shall so happen, the mayor and the rest of the common council of the said city of Dublin, and their successors for the time being, or the major part of them, shall and may from time to time, and at all times hereafter, have full power and authority of taxing and imposing any reasonable fine, pain, penalty or sum of money on such person to be so perfected and elected sheriff of the city and county of the said city of Dublin, and who shall so deny and refuse to undertake the said office of sheriff, and the burthen and execution thereof, provided said fine, pain, penalty and sum of money, does not exceed the sum of QOO marks of lawful money of England; and if and whensoever any such person so elected, or chosen, or to be elected or chosen sheriff of the said city and county of the said city of Dublin, and so refusing or denying as aforesaid, to undertake and exercise the said office and the execution thereof, or shall refuse to pay, satisfy, or shall oppose the said fine, pain, penalty or sum of money so upon him imposed, assessed, or to be imposed, taxed or assessed at such time or times as the said mayor and the rest of the common council of the said city of Dublin for the time being, or the major part of them have decreed and appointed, that then and so often the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city of Dublin, and their successors for the time being, shall and may from time to time have full power and authority, by virtue of these presents, to levy, collect, recover, retain and dispose of every such fine, pain, penalty or sum of money, by distringas, action of debt or upon the case, in any court of us, our heirs or successors, in the manner and to the uses aforesaid; all which fines, pains, penalties and sums of money to be as aforesaid imposed, taxed or assessed for us, our heirs and successors, We do give and grant to the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city, and their successors, by these presents; and that it shall and may be lawful for the said mayor, sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city, and their successors, to receive, have, and to their proper use and behoof, retain all such fines, pains, penalties and sums of money, without any molestation, hindrance or agorievance of us, our heirs or successors thereout to be rendered, made or done; and further, for us, our heirs and successors, We do grant and confirm to the said mayor sheriffs, commons and citizens of the said city of Dublin, and their successors, that if 549. 4 G any
