SPEECHES DELIVEHED FROM TIIE HUSTINGS AT LINCOLN, ON OCCASION OF THE COUNTY ELECTION In JUNE, 1818. HIE II igh- Sherifl having by public advertisement appointed a County Meeting to be held 011 Wednesday the 24th of June, for the purpose of nominating Candidates, from whom should be elected two gentlemen to represent the County of Lincoln in Parliament, an unusually large Meeting of Free- holders assembled in the Castle- Yard, and the business of the day was opened about twelve o'clock. JOHN CHARLES LUCAS CALCRAFT, Esq. the Sheriff, addressed the meeting as follows :—" Gentlemen, Clergy, and Freeholders, — In consequence of having received a requisition signed by most respectable freeholders, 1 have called this meet- ing, for the purpose of receiving the nomination of such persons as you may think proper to represent this county in Parliament. Having received his Majesty's writ for the purpose of electing two Knights to serve this extensive county in the ensuing Par- liament, I have fixed to- morrow for the day of election, in order to save the county as much trouble as possible ; as it appeared to me that it would put many persons to great inconvenience and expence to attend the day of nomination, and then have to come again to the election in a day or tAvoto give their votes. I hope this arrangement will meet with the approbation of the county. It would be highly improper in me to make any observations respecting the Candidates, from the situation in which Iain placed as Returning Officer ; but in the discharge of that impor- tant duty, I pledge myself to act with the strictest impartiality, and I will make every exertion in my power to expedite the election, and that it may be carried 011 with as much order and regularity as the nature of the thing will admit of; and 1 trust that I shall meet with the assistance of all parties to obtain so desirable an object. Mr. ROBINSON then read the requisition, and the adver- tisement appointing the meeting. Sir ROBERT SHEFFIELD presented himself to the free- holders, for the purpose of nominating the Hon. Chas. Anderson Pelham as a proper person for their choice on this occasion.—• After having long represented the county in Parliament, that gentleman had met with such great encouragement to renew B
