Nos - 35> 36> 37-] OM FEES, GR ATUITIES, Scc.~( Poft Office.)- No. 35- The Examination of Mr. GEORGE WEBB; taken upon Oath, the 17th and 18th of May 1809. This Examinant faith, been a Riding Surveyor about 25 years, and 35 years in the employment of the Poft Office He has a salary on the establishment of JxL a year, and an allowance 26. a day while on duty, and one shilling a mile travelling chargess before April i8o< had but £ 5o. a year, and ten shillings and sixpence a day travelling charges: about" that time the number of Riding Surveyors was increased from two to four, to each of whom was given the same salary and allowances as Examinant. The Country of Ireland is divided into tour District, to each of which a Riding Surveyor is appointed. Each Diftria confifts of one of the four great Post Roads and its branches; viz. the Cork Road, the Eimerick Road the Belfast and Derry Road, and the Sligo and Enniskillen Road, to which laft Diftria cxa- minant belongs. The duty of a Riding Surveyor is to fuperintend the Deputy Poftmafters, toinftrufl: them in their duty, and to take charge of their Offices if they happen to be in arrear, and to pay particular attention to the Post- boys who do the riding duty. The Riding Survevors do not make any regular reports to the Secretary, unlefs when called on fo to do, but correfpond with him when any thing material occurs. Examinant does not wait for an order from the Secretary to go out upon duty, but as he feels himfelf refponfible for the regularity of all things relating to the Post Office in his Diftria, he goes out as often as it appears to him to be necessary; it has always been the praaice of the Riding Surveyors fo to do, and par- ticularly so since they have been attached to Diftrias. Exaniinant does not keep any book, but when out on duty keeps a note of the places where he is on each day. In'making up his Accounts for allowances and travelling expences, he charges for every day he is abfent from his own residence, and for the number of miles he has travelled. In the courfe of the laft year he has gone out frequently, as well upon orders from the Poft Office as upon his- own idea of the expediency of doing fo. Riding Surveyors are not required to refide in Dublin. Fred. Geale, George Webb Robert Alexander, Chas. Stewart Hawthorne, John Hamilton. No. 36. An ACCOUNT of the Expence incurred by the POST OFFICE of IRELAND, in-, maintaining Packet Wherries for the conveyance of Exprefies and Mails from Dublin to Holyhead, fince their Establishment, to the jft January 1809. 1796. | Two Packet Wherries were established at this date, Sept. 26. > and have since continued to be maintained at a charge of ^ 49. 4*. 6d. per lunar month for each Wherry ; the Expence of the two Wherries being per Annum - - 7 3f 1798. \ One additional Wherry was established at this date, June 8th. J and has since continued to be maintained at a charge of £ 49. 4s. 6d. per lunar month, which is per Annum - - " £ 641 13 General Poft Office, Dublin, Graves C. Swan, 10th May 1809. Treafurer. No. 37. My Lords Dublin Castle, 24th September 1796. I AM directed by my Lord Lieutenant to desire that you will order two Wherries to be chartered for six months, properly manned, with a Master to each who can be depended upon,, in order to assist in conveying the Mails between Holyhead and Dublin. And his Excellency desires that they may be kept as much as poifib e at Ho yheadv with directions never to sail except when a Packet is not in the Harbour ot ilolvhead or when a. Packet cannot sail; and it is particularly expected, that in cafe of contrary winds the utmoft efforts should be made by the Masters of the Vessels to work our to lea when a Packet cannot sail, and make their passage with all possible expedition.
