AN ACCOUNT of the Number of Poft Towns on the Eftablifliment, on the 5th of January 1801, and the 5th January 1809; diftinguifhing thofe to which Mails were forwarded, fix from thofe to which Mails were tranfmitted but three times in each week. In January 1801. In January 1809. Daily Post Towns - - I 20 - - 223 Three Day Posts - - 156 - . - 102 Total - 276 - Total - 325 No. 27. The Examination of Mr. WILLIAM ARMIT ; taken upon Oath, the 16th of May and 7th July 1809. This E* aminant faith, That he is Firft Clerk in the Penny Poft Office, that the Establishment confifts of three Clerks ; fince the appointment of the prefent Postmasters General, fourteen Letter Carriers have been appointed to the Penny Poll Office, four for the Town and ten for the Country ; the fecond and third Clerks were alfo added about nine months fince. The Persons who now fill those situations were previoufly junior Clerks in the Sorting Office. There are at present no Penny Post receiving houfes eftablifhed as fuch in Dublin, the only Office where the Postage on Penny Post Letters is received is at the General Poft Office ; Letters for the Penny Poft are taken in at the general receiving houfes, and from thence brought to the Poft Office by the Penny Post Letter Carriers twice a day, fo as to be difpatched for delivery at ten in t'ue morning and fix in the evening for the Town, and once for the Country at ten in the mom. ing. There is only one receiving house in the Country for the Penny Poft, which is at the Black Rock, it being impoffible to induce persons to undertake such offices as there is no falary annexed to doing the duty. The Penny Poft Letter Carriers are paid on the Establishment. The receipts arifing from the Penny Poft do not at prefent pay the expence attending it. In the mornings, the two junior Clerks attend the General Office at 7 o'clock, where they remain till the general Letters are forted, and they receive fuch Letters as have been sorted for the Penny Post, and take them to Examinant's Office, where they are compared and their number taken, and they are taxed a penny in addition to the general Poftage, they ate then forted into ten districts. Letters put into the general receiving houfes for the Penny Poft, are alfo forted for both Town and Country into fourteen divifions, and they are all then delivered to their refpeftive Letter Carriers. The general Postage received on Letters delivered by the Penny Poft is paid weekly to the Treasurer by Examinant, which amounts upon an average to about .€ 30. a week. The Penny Poft Postage is paid quarterly by Examinant to the Treafurer. One of the General Poft Letter Carriers receives British Letters for the Penny Post on forting the Englifli Mail, and delivers them to Examinant's Office. General Letters that have been post- paid are fent from the Gene- ral Office to Examinant, accompanied by a Docket of their number, which is entered and compared in Examinant's Office, and on delivery to the Letter Carriers, the addresses of each are entered in their book.
