civ ( Ireland.) SUPPLEMENT to the Ninth Report of the [ Poft- Office.] of his bufinefs, and which v. as for the two lr. fi years ( owing to his bad ftate of health) con- fided almoft entirely to his Clerks. I . mult alio regret, that this inveftigation did not take place previous to my father's deceafe, as 1 am fure he would have explained the in . tier in l'uch a manner as would have given their Lordfhips perfect latisfa& ioii, re. pecting the ffiare he had in the tranfaction alluded to in your letter, and which 1 have no doubt woald nave proved creditable to himfelf. If, upon making further enquiries aad l'earch among his papers, 1 iha! l diicover any thing that may elucidate the. fubjecl, I vvill haften to lay them before VQU for their Lordlhip's information. J have the honour to be, Sir, your moft obedient, and very humble fervant, Thomas Harrison. ( A.) No. 16. Reply from Mr. Maturin to Mr. Lees's Letter of the 7U1 October iSoq. Sir, 10th Oftober 1809. " WITH- the deepeft concern and the most heartfelt humiliation I find, that, misled by a deperidanee on the number of Papers sent, and not 011 their produce, and pursuing the original calculation of 1802, I have, in common I suppose with the other Clerks of Roads, made moft erroneous claims on Government, an error which I did not discover till this day, when 1 received the Printer's Accounts and compared them with my cash books; and which 1 haften to acknowledge with the lincereft lorruw. i> y the enclosed Accounts for 1807 and 1808, it does appear that, milled by a deficiency, there was a considerable. surplus in each year. This difcovcry overwhelms me with confulion and concern, and the distress of mind 1 have experienced from this unexpected Ihock has renewed my complaints. I have nothing to plead in extenuation, but that it was the effect of the grossest negligence in not calling up my books, and not of defign. 1 lhouid hope alio that this overcharge does not extend beyond the two laft years, as the grofs produce of the Road was no more than <£'. 837. 15. 4. in 1805, an( l of. 973. 14. in 1806, though I am not in pollellion of the expenditure. Nothing remains for me now but to fupplicate the clemency ot the Postmasters General for this unintentional though unjuftifiable offence, and to submit myself wholly to their Lordihips pleafure. I am moft willing to make all the restitution in my power, and to give up my ialary or the emoluments of. the Road for this purpose, or to discharge the amount hy anv mode in my power; and 1 moft humbly hope their Lordships will be gracioully pleafed to accept thefe terms ( with the deepelt concern, and this early acknowledgment of my offence) and not abandon me after a ferviee of near fifty vears to distress and misery. Allow me, Sir, to folicit your humane interposition with their Lordships in my favour, which fliall ever be molt gratefully acknowledged by, Sir, Your most faithful servant, Wm Maturin. ( A.) No. 17. The Right Honourable Earl O'Neill and the Right Honourable Earl Clancarty. His Miyefty's Poltmafters General. The Memorial of James Twigg, Clerk of the North Road, • Sheweth, THAT in the year i8o.\ Mcmorialist was applied to by the Clerk of the Munster Road to join him and the other Clerks of the Roads, in an application to Government for compenfation of lofles, by the diminution in circulation of the Dublin Newspapers in their refpe& ive provinces, by the removal of the Parliament; that in confequence thereof your Lordihips Memorialift made out an Eftimate for three years, which amounted to twenty- four quires and tYiree iheets, at thirteen ( hillings and sixpence, .£. 408. 10. which the Government was gracioufly pleafed to grant, and being in the judgment of Memorialift a fair calculation, any deficit in which was to be made good to him' out of the Revenue of the Poft Office, or by the exceedings in the other Roads, and as the Government was dilpofed, as Memorialift underftood and verily believed, to make a full compensation, had your Lordihips Memorials rated it at a larger fum for a I hree- day Paper, Memorialist entertained 110doubt but it would have been granted; and if in that cafe Memorialist really under- rated the profits, its operation • ended to leflen his income ; that as compensation was. asked and obtained at the rate of i3s. 6< J. per Three- day Paper per annum, it will be found, he humbly reprefents, that his average for the year 1S0S, is conformable thereto, being twenty quires l'even flieets at 13s. 6d. ^. 339. 18. 8. your Lordihips Memorialift further 1' tates, that tins appeared to him fair and
