SOON as the above Report was completed for fubinittal to the Poftmafters General, Mr. Lees, previous to fubmitting it, required an interview with the Clerks of Roads, and Mr. Harrifon's Ileprefentative, and having obtained that, he roprefented to each the charges againft them as let forth in his Report, and announced to them the neceftity by which he felt himfelf obliged to lay the matter before their Lordlhips. l or this purpoie Mr. Lees proceeded to Baflinafloe to Lord Clancarty, and in the mean time he received letters from Meffrs. Maturin and Twigg, of which the" following are copies. ( A.) No. 12. Copy of a Letter from Mr. Twigg to Edward S. Lees, Efq. Sir, O& ober 4th, 1809. I BEG the liberty to ftate, that the Printers Accounts to me for 1808 being held ufelefs, have, however, I thank God, efcaped being burnt, a meafure I often adopt to' rid myfelf of the multiplicity of ufelefs papers my fituation inevitably produces; many of them were miflaid, and after a fearch of fome hours 1 collected them, and now lay them before you. James Stephenfon, my late Clerk, w as in mydervice the whole of the period, and contrived to take up Papers charged to my account, and fraudulently difpofed of them; when detected, it appeared to be at the rate of 48 fheets per week. I fhall be very thankful if you will be pleafed, if not further wanted, to order my book to be returned to me. I am, Sir, with the higheft refpe< 5l, your inoft obedient Edward S. Lees, Efq. and very humble fervant, Secretary, 8cc. c. & c. James Twigg. ( A.) No. 13. October 5th, 1800. THE Poftmafters General having confidered the Report of their Secretary of the above date, and examined the feveral papers and calculations laid before them in fupport thereof, direct that the allegations therein contained, as affecting the conduct of the different Clerks of Roads, fhall be immediately furnifhed to each of them in writing, and to the Reprefentatives of Henry Harrifon lately deceafed, and that they fhall be called upon forthwith to give their rel'pecftive anfwers in writing to the fame, and more particularly to ftate the abfolute amount of grofs profit arifing from each of the Newspapers circulated by them. CLANCARTY. ( A.) No. 14. Copy of Mr. Lees's Letter to the Clerks of Roads, in obedience to the Minute of the 5th mftant of the Poftmafter General. Sir, General Poft Office, Otfober 7th, 1809. HAVING recently fubmitted to the Poftmafters General the refult of an inveftigation that has for fome time paft been in progrefs and very lately concluded, of which the objeft was to afcertain, with more correctnefs than has hitherto been deemed effential, the profits derived to you as Clerk of the Road from the circulation of Newspapers; I am commanded by their Lordlhips to acquaint you, that in dire& ing me to communicate to you the refult, they defire me to ftate to you the neceffity ot ati immediate explanation thereof.
