The French garrison, conceiving that our troops were inore numerous, or that reinforcements might immediately arrive, sent out a Flag of Trure, after three days, and surrendered. The French troops are to be conveyed to France, pot to serve again until exchanged; and Gen. Carmichael, who engaged in the Expediti- on, as Hie ally of Spain, relinquished the city ! to tiie Spaniards, and returned with his force to Jamacia. . The Gazette also gives the details. oiVthe operations of the arrnv under the command of Sir John Stuart. These are said to have been a mere demonstration, intended to operate as a diversion in favour of Austria, and they seem to have answered the purpose completely, as a la.' ge body of troops which were detached from Naples to Upper Italy, was immediately rcca. led on ihtir appearance. Sir John's dis- j atches do not evince any intention of aban- doning ei. h: r Ischia or Procida, which the last French papers asserted vve had evacuated. An attempt against tiie castle of Scylla failed in the first instance, but the enemy afterwards did the business for us, they blew up the works of Scylla, and repaid us with interest for some Stores they had previous'y taken from us, leaving us not only those stores, but an im- mense quantity ofordnanc • and stores of their own, which hud been placed in depot, prepa- ratory. to an intended invasion of Sicily. Wednesday a Gottenburgh Mail arrived, bv whicn it appears thai some disturbance has taken place in Norway.— It is reported that Prince Augustenburg has been arrested, and that a partv lias risen to support him. I he Swedes have again obtained some ad- vantages against the enemy, in the Guif of Bothnia. We also learn that some relaxation of trie severe orders o' F rance, respecting their commerce, has been obtained. A vessel isarrived in the River from Co- rtinua, after a voyage of eleven days. We understand that she has- brought dispatches to the Spanish . vmbassador, relating principally to tiie situation of the North of Spain, and to the opertions of the armies under the Marquis de lu iioniana and Gen. Baltasleros. It is said that ttie Commander in (,' hief of ttie Northern Provinces intended to proceed directly to Ala- dud, and that at the time of the departure of this ship, he was within six days march of that capital. Ac oiding to the information tic had theujoceived, he was, it is said, of opinion, that the most useful diversion he could make in , favour of Generals VVeltesiej arid Cuesta, was to tut'iaten Madrid, aud to enter it by a coup dem> un, should it not be protected by a pow- felTui ill'. sou. f. eicester Journal, and Midland Counties General Advertiser. After a very suitable and excellent sermon, preached last Sunday at the Great Meeting Hinck- ley, by the Rev. Charles Berry of this place, for the benefit of the Sunday School belonging to the above place, a collection was made, which amount- ed to >£ 2- 2 13s. 3id. The Officers of the First Warwickshire Local Militia, have presented Mr. Preest, of Fillongley, with an tlcgant silver cup, for the accommodation appeal should be made to the generosity of the Public, as the present stock ih hand would be en- tirely absorded by the claims that were now ex- petted to be made by the families of above 3000 killed, and 6000 wounded, including those who had been killed and wounded at the battles of Co- runna and Talavera, The King has ordered the distribution ofa large number of Merino sheep among those persons most likely to preserve and improve the breed, the in- troduction of which will prove in time a great na- tional benefit, by rendering the country indepeny" v dent of others for the staple of its woollen manu*^ faciure.— fcir J. Banks is to superintend the distri- bution. funeral of Matthew Bottoh, Esq.— 1 he funeral of this distingh shed man, took place, with appro- priate solemnity, on Thursday last, at Handsworth, about three quarters ofa mile from Solro. A hearse and nine mourning coaches attended, but the coffin was carried by thrfee sets of bearers, by hand, in mourning, and scarfs ; the hearse, and Coaches, d numberless carriages of the deceased's friends followed. Eighteen singers, in cloaks, preceded, singing appropriate psalms the whole way. All the beadies of' Birmingham rode on horseback, and' 1 kept the way open. The Corpse was followed to the grave by 600 workmen of the manufactory of Soho, who had each a silver medal presented to him, struck for the occasion, they wore hat- bands and gloves, and some mourning. The town was emptied of its principal inhabitants. ' 1 he workmen were provided, after the funeral, with a dinner at II n sworth, and allowed to regale themselves for two hours. Thefcxpence of the funeral is calculat ed at 2000/, We understand the Managers of the Taihworth Musicai Meeting have arranged to have one of their evening performances in the church, and have en- gaged a person from London to illuminate it brilli- antly f< r the occasion j it is supposed that nearly two ih tisand coloured lamp* will be usfd to exe- cute the intended plah. A spectacle so novel ' a'nd- » btautifu!; wiih a band of one hundred and thirty perlormers, consisting of the first musical talents, performing the grand Compositions ot Handel and other eminent composers, must produce an effect truly sublime^ and cannot fail to attract a nume- rous assemblage of nobility and gentry from various parts ofthe kingdom ; and as ihe profits of ihe meeting are to be applied to fit up a certain portion of the church to be free for the poor, we sincerely wish it may fully answer the purpose of enabling them to complete so laudable an undertaking. believe that more business was done here dur- ing the two last weeks, in the important at tide of cotton than ever was done in any two weeks before, siuce the existence of Liverpool as a sea port.- - Liverpool Advertiser, August 13. A barn full of Wheat, in the straw, and a thresh- ing machine, belong. ng to Mr. Hansbury, of Wolse- iy Bridge; were on Saturday se'nnight destroyed by the lightning, at Moreton, ill Staffordshire.— The flarties were so rapid, that in less than a quar- ter of an hour the whole foof fell in, and little re- mains but the shell. A man taking shelier in the barn was also struck with the lightning, but spee- dily recovered; On Tuesday night a fire was discovered in a barn contiguous to the dwelling of Mr. Sander, at the village of Ilarlbw, Herts, which consumed the same, and ten i cks of Hay, besides several head of cattle. The bain contained corn to the value of J. 3000. and is supposed to have been intentionally set on fire. Dreadful accident.— A letter from Inverness, of the 18th in- t. says " Intelligence ofa most distress- ing and awful nature has just reached us. It ap- pears that a great many persons from Dornoch, and other parts of Sutherland, who were on then- way to attend the ' Iain market, on Wednesday last, most imprudently crowded into the passage boat at tiie Meikle Ferry, to the number of from 100 to 120, being considerably beyond its burthen, Unfortunately, however, they had scarcely pro- eeeded halfway from the shore,_ when, dreadlul to relate, the boat sunk, and all on board perished, except five persons. On Thursday se'nnight, an inquisition was taken at NewboId- upon- Ayon, on view of the body of a new- born bastard child, of which Elizabeth Elking- ton, a servant to Mr. Norman, of Coventry, deli- vered herself t'e tu. day preceding; when, after a full investigation of the circumstances attending the birth and death of the child, the jury returned a verdict if wilful murder against the said Elizabeth Elkington. At Guildhall, before the Commissioners of Bank- rupts, on the last sitting day, a bankrupt was com mitted to Newgate for not making a true schedule. The Journal which he produced appeared to have been written at one time; and he swore that the articles were delivered according to dates; but on exam. nation, it was ascertained by the water- mark, that the paper of which the book was made, was not manufactured until two years after the pretend- ed dates ofthe entries, which created a strong sus- picion in the minds of the creditors that he had se- creted large sums of mor ey. At the late Gloucester assizes, Messrs. Pitt and Co. proprietors of the brass- mill on the river Avon, near Bristol, obtained a'verdict, with 10,0001. da- mages, agaiftst the Bristol Dock Company, as compensation for the loss sustained by having the whole of the water drained from their mill by the recent improvements in the port of Bristol. Lancaster Assizes concluded oil Wednesday last, when Patrick M'Can, for highway robberv ; / oseph Ward, Robert Shepherd; and John Scholfield, tor felony ; and James Draper, Lawrence Law, Kobe: t Hartley, James Smith, Gilbert Holdim, and James Cudworth; for uttering fo'ged Bank of England notes, received sentence of death. TheJu'dge was pleased to reprieve M'Can, Ward, Shepherd, and Scholfield, before he left town- and the others were respited till the 24: h of November next, in j order to have the opinion of the Judges on their 1 cases. A cause of some interest came on at the Suffolk j Assizes. It Was brought by Mr. Smith, who is a ' Protestant Dissenter, to recover back the sum of 3d. which he had been obliged to pay to Johnson, a toll- keeper of the turnpike gate at Ilalesworth, for a taxed cart, in which he was going on Sunday IO divine worship at a meeting- house at the above place. The plaint IT claimed an exemption from toll under the clause ofthe statute which gives ex- emptions to persons going to their pi oper parochial church, chapel, or other place cf public worship. It w » j intended by both pi: tics, that a case should field day, accompanied with an excellent miltiry band : in the even ng there'was a bail, which was attended by a numerous assemblage of Ladies and Gentlemen of dis- inction.— And un Fridav evening the amusements of the week concluded w ih a Graud Supper and Ball, at the Forest Hall, which was ndmeruusly attended by the first Fashion ofthe Country. Mr. DbWne, thfe pedestrian, finished a task of 70 miles a- day, for six days, at Dorchester, on Sa- turday, by which he has won 200gs. ^ Blair's New English Grammar appears likely to .( ford the safhe facilities for it- aching the Engl. sh language in Schools, as hitheito have appertained solely to the Latin and French. Young per.- oni will not only become, by means of this Gram- mar, expert Grammarians, but whenever this sys- tem is pursued, it is impossible for them to avo d writing and speaking their own language with ease and elegance.
