Oil the morning of the 1st. itrst the troops advanced to the investment of Flushing, wliieii operation was warmly contested hv the enemy. In this movement he was driven by Major- General'Graham's division on the right; from the batteries of the Dykeshook, the Vygeter, and the Nule, while Brigadier- Gentyal Houston' brigade Forced the enemy posted on the road from Middieburgh to retire, with the 1ISS of four guns, and many killed and wounded. Lient.- Gen. Lord Paget's division also drove in the posts of the enemy, and took up his position at West Zouberg. Nothing could exceed the gallantry of the troops through- out the whole of this ( 1IV, anil my warmest praise is due to the Several General Officers for the; r judicious disposition in the advance of their respective columns. To Lieut- Gen Sir Eyre Cont'd I feel much indebted for his exertions in this Servi e, and the prompt slid able, manner in which he has executed - uiv orders. Tlie light troops underBrigadier- * General Baron kotteuburg liave been athnirablyconducted; and with the officers comma duigtlie several corps engaged I have e- verv reason to be most perfectly satisfied. The . id battalion of ilie Royals, and flank companies of the 5th Raiment, maintained the right, under difficult circum- stances, with' great gallantry, and killed and wounded'a great many of the enemy. Ter Vere being in our possession, Lient.- Gen. Eraser's division marched in the eveirng upon RuttemJ detaching a corps for the reduction of Ramjkens, which, when effected, will complete the investment ( Jf Flushing. 1 have to regret the temporary .. osenc; of Brtgadier- O'- rieral who was wounded late in the day, hut I trust not. to be long deprived of his services, I have the honour to inclose a return of the killed, wounded, and missing. Deeply as the fall of every British Soldier is at all times to be lamented, the loss will not appear to have been great, when the serious impediments, u was in t ie power of the enemy to oppose to our progress, are considered, as well as the formidable state of the batteries of Flushing, to which the troops were necessarily exposed. The pressure of circumstances has prevented the Com- manding Officer of Artillery from furnishing a detailed account of the guns and ordnance stores taken in the several batteries, and fortress of Ter Vere, but which will be hereafter transmitted, with a return of the prisoners taken since our landing, supposed to amount to 1000. Commodore Owen's squadron, with Lieut.- Gen. the Mar- quis of Huntlev's division, remains rit anchor in the Wiel- ing Passage, a'ul the divisions of L'eut.- Gen. the Earl of P. osslyn, and Lieut.- Gen. Grosvener, are arrived at the anchorage in the Vere Gat. 1 cannot conclude without expressing in the strongest terms, my admiration of the distinguished ability with which the fleet was conducted through the pa sage into the Vera Gat, nor can the advantages, resulting troln the success- of this operation be too highly estimated, as by it we were not only enabled to elfect a disembarkation, which, in the then state of the wind, was impracticable in any other quarter, but also that the enemy, probably relying on the difficulty of the navigation, was less prepared for resistance. 1 must also warmly acknowledge the great assistance the service has doqvt d from the zealous exertions of the officeri of the Navv, ax) of the stamen empl-. yed,- in drawing a considerable proportion of the. Artillery through a heavy sand, and without whose aid, the advance of the army must necessarily have been suspended, the strength of the tide rendering the lauding of the borsas for a time extremely difficult. 1 have the horio- ir to be, See. On the morning of the 30th, as soon as the ships were secured, measures were taken. to prepare to land the army on the island of Walcheren. I did not wait for the gun- boats coming up, but ordered those who happened. to be near the Venerable, together with the mortar brigs, to pu^ h in shore tj cover the lauding, and to force the Der- haak Battery. At, hilf- past four the boats put off under the direction of Lord Amelius Weaucleve, of the Royal Oak, a .< 1 Captain Cockburn of the lklleisle', and the troops were landed in excellent order without opposition; the ti.- ing from the mortar and gun- ves els have driven the enemy completely from the Gerhaak Battery.- Having thus accomplished the first object, I lost no time ; in directing tile bombs and gun- vessels to proceed: up the Veere Gat, off Camvere, and having given Sir Home Pop- hani, who at the retluest of Lord Chatham i. ad remained on shore with his Lordship, permission to employ tlieni as the service might require, he the. next morning began to cannonade Cathvere; which had been sumtnoi ed, but held out. The fire of the gun- boats was exceedingly well directed, and did much damage to the town. The officers and crews engaged in that service had a great claim to my admiration for their conduct. Tin - e of our gun- boats were » unk. In the afternoon it. blew fresh, and as the strength of the ti le prevented the bombs from acting, 1 directed the flotilla to fall back, preserving a menacing position. AtgOight, Capt. The Extraordinary Gazette \ vill inform our readers of all the operations of the Expedition which are yet known in an authentic shape. It appears that a strong - gule from the west obliged the fleet to take shelter in the Vere Gat, a station of very difiicult access, but secure anchorage ; from- whence landings were effected on Walcheicn and South Beveland, and the two islands rr versed by. our troops from, their northern to their south .1 extremities, with little'opposition,' till the division un;' r . the Co'm- mtinder in . Chief reached Flushing, which was completely invested, at the date of the la t dispatchi's. From the first article of the Capitulation of ^ fiddleburgh, the permanent occupation of the island of Waleheren is evidently in the contemplation of our Ministers; It states that " security shall be. gra » ed to ' I persons, provided they Conform to such regulations as shall be hereafter established by the BKtMi Government."— But th'ugh Middieburgh is the. capital, Flushing is the strong-. loll , i the isla d, and so situated that without posse - nig that port, the remainder of the island must be more Imitheii- some than useful, and the tenure whollv i - cure. By Express. LONDON GAZETTE, PUBLISHED OU SATU1S. DA. Y. NIGHT, AUG. 9. DOWNIKG- STREET, Aug. II. DISPATCHES, of which the following- are Extracts, have been received at the Office of Lord Viscount Castlereagh, one of ins Majesty's Prin- cipal Secretaries of State, flora Lieutenaut- Geaeral Sir Arthur Wellesley, K. B. MY LORD, Placeneia, \ Zth July 1809. A ITER I hud written to your Lordship on the 1st inst. Joseph Bonaparte crossed the Tagus again, and joined Seba tiai. i with the troop? he had brought from Madrid, and with a detachment from Marshal Victor's corps, making th • corps of Seb. iitUni about 128,000 men, with an intention of attacking Vanegas' corps. Vanegas, however, retired nto the mountains of Sierra Morena, nnd Col. Larey with his advanced guard attacked a French advanced corps in the night, and destroyed many of them. Th> French troops then returned again to tin: Tagus, vvh'ch river Joseph had crossed with the reinforcement \ v ieh he ha; l taken to Sebastiani's corps ; and this last corps consisting of 10,000 men only, was on the left Sank of the Tagus, about Madnelejos, in front of Vanegas, who was again advancing. The last accounts from this quartet- te of the 8th. The French army under Victor, joined by the detach- ments brought by Joseph from Sebastiani's corps, and amounting in the whole to about 35,000 men, are con- cf nlvat d in the neighbourhood of Talavera, and or, the Alberche; General Cuesta's army, has been in the position wliirli I informed your Lordship that it had taken up since 1 addressed you on the 1st inst. The advanced guard of the British army arrived here oil the 8th, and the troops'which were with me on the Ta » us arrived by the 10th ; the 23d Light Dragoons and the 48th arrived yesterday ; ihe 61st regt". will arrive to- morrow. I went to Gen. Questa'squaiters at AlmaraZ on the loth, and stayed there till the 12th, and I have arranged with that General a { dan of operations upon the French army, which we are to begin to carry into execution on the 18th, if the French should remain so long in their position. The Sp- inieh army under General Cuesta consists of 38,000 men, ( rxctufive of Vanegas's corps) of which 7000 are cavalry. About 14,000 men are detached to the Bridge of Arzobi ' lio, and the remainder arc in the camp under the 1' uerte de Mirabete. X have the pleasure to inform your Lordship, that the seven battalions of infantry from Ireland and the Islands, and the troop of Horse Artillery from Great Britain, ar- rived at Lisbon ill the beginning of the month. General Craufurd's Brigade is on its march to join the armv, but will not arrive here till the 24th or 25th. ARTHUR YVELL. ESLEY. Talavera de la Royna, July 2- J, ( 809.. MY LOISO, ACCORDING to the arrangement which I had settled with General Cue'ta, the army broke up from PlaCentia on the 17th a . d 18th inst. and reached Oropesa on the 20th, where it formed a junction with the Spanish army undej- his command. Sir Robert Wilson had marched from theVenta de Baza- gon, oil theTietar, with the Lusitanian Legion, a battalion of P. lnuguese chasseurs, and two Spanish battalions, on the 15th: he arrived at Arenas on the 19 th, and on the Al- berche, at Escalona, on the ^ 3d. General Va iegas had also been directed to break up from Madrileyos on the 18th and 19th, and to march by Tren- fcleque and Ocana to Puenteduenas on the Tagus, where that river is crossed by a ford, and thence to Argauda, v. h : re he was to arrive on the 22d and 23d. On the 22d, the combined armies moved from Oropesa, and the advanced guards attacked the enemy's outposts at Talavera, Their right was turned by the 1st Hussars and tiie 23d Light Dragoons under Colonel Alison, directed by Lieutenant- General Payne, and by the division of infantry under the command of Major- Genera! Mackenzie, and they were driven in try the Spanish advanced guards under the command of Gen. Sarjas and the Due d' Albuquerque. We lost 11 horses by the lire of cannon from the enemy's position on tile Aiberche, and the Spaniards had same men wounded. The columns were formed for the attack of this position yesterday ; but the attack was postponed till this morning by desire of Gen. Cuesta, when the different corps destined for the attack were put in motion , but the enemy had re- tired at about one . in the morning to Santa Olalla, and and thence towatds Torrtfus, I conclude to form a junction with the corps under General Sebastiani. I have not been able to follow the enemy as I could wish, on account of the gieat deficiency of means of transport in Spain. General Cuesta has urgpd the Central Junta to adopt vigorous measures to relieve our wants : till I am supplied, I do not think it proper, ami indeed £ cannot, continue ir. v operations. A. WELLJsSLEY. DISPATCHES, of which the following are Copies, have been received by Lord Castlcreagh fiom Lieut. Gen. the Earl of Chatham, K. G. Head Quarters, Muldteburg, MY LORD, August 7, 1809. NOTHING very material has occurred since my last dispatch of the 3d inst. We have been unremittingly em- ployed in bringing up the artillery of siege, ammunition and stores, to the vicinity of Flushing, and the troops have been occupied in the construction of the batteries, and in carrying pn the severai works before the place, but which have beep nec - ssarily interrupted by the very heavy la iv which have fallen here. The e aemy is active and enterprising, and the garrison has certainly received considerable reiniurements from the opposite coast; nor has it been in the power of the flotilla hitherto to prevent it. Under these circumstances it has teen found necessary to land Lieut. Gen. Grosvenor's di- vision, and the two lig| u hattaljons of the King's German Legion have been also for the present brought oil shore. Immediately on the fall of Jtamakens, I determined, as soon as the necessary arrangements were made, tp pass the infantry of Lieut. Gen. the Earl of Rosslyn's corps, together with Lieut. Gen. the Marquis of Huntley's di- vision, a: d the light brigades of artillery, into South Jleveland, to form a junction with the reserve Hiider Lieut. Gen. Sir John Hope, and that the cavalry and ord- jianc- ships, together with the transports for Lieut. Gen. Gro'. venor's division, the moment their services could be spared from before Flushing, should be brought through tlie Slow Passage, and proceed up the West Scheldt, but of coarse this latter operation cannot take place until a sufficient naval force shall have been enabled to enter the river, and to proceed in advance, but the very severe blowing feather we have constantly experienced, add- d [ o the great difficulty of the navigation, has hither to baffled a'l their efforts. By letters from Lieut.- Gen. Sir J. Hope, I find that the enemy had, on the 5th inst. come down with about 28 gun vcssels before Batz, on which place they kept up a smart Cannonade for some hours, but were forced to retire bv the guns from the fort, and every thing has sinre remained ( juiet in that quarter. SINCE do ing mv dispatch of yesterday's date, the enemy, towards five o'clock in the evening, in considerable force, made a vigorous sortie upon the right of our line occupied by Major- General Graham's divisii » . The attack was principally directed upon our advanced piquets, which jvere supported by the 3d battalion of the ' Royals, the 5th and 35th regiments under Col. Hay. These corps, together with detachments of the Royal Artillery, the ,95th and light battalions of the King's German Legion, received the enemy with their accustomed Intrepidity; and after a sharp contest of some duration, forced him to retire with very considerable loss in killed, wounded, and prisoners. bi till-, affair- the enemy has had another opportunity of witnessing the superior galli itry of British troop); iti no i tanee his he succeeded in mai. iiig the least impression t rougbout our tiiie, am) on this occasion, so far from pro tiling by his attempt, he has bsen obliged to relinquish some very advantageous ground where our advanced pbsts are now established. SATURDAY EVEN IN G, AUGUST 12. Late last night arrived two Gottenburgh Mails, the papers bv which state the important fact of a British squa- dron having made an attack upon the Russian town and port of Archangel, and succeeded in destroying the maga- zines and storehouses of that place. A great number of captures have lately been made in the Baltic. The Duke of Brunswick- Ocls, and about 2000 of his brave troops, have made good their retreat to tbe banks of the Weser, from whence they were taken off by the squadron under the cofiimand of Lord George Stewart, and will probably he landed at Walcheren, aud reinforce our armament. The Army Agents have received n circular letter from Government, stating, that one- fourth of the present allowance for the paving, & c. of the regiments in their respective agency will in future be deducted. Bills are posted up in all parts of the wnvn, offering a a reward of 501, for the apprehension of Mrs. Plunket, well known a< the ci- devant . Miss Gunning, upon a charge of forgery. This Lady made a conspicuous figure some years ago, by producing a scries of amorous epistles, which she passed upon her father General Gunning, and others, as coming from t. he Marquis of Lorn addressed to herself. Her mother, before her marriage with the General, was one of the Miss Minifies, to whom Circulating Libra- ries are so liberally indebted for the increased bulk of their Catalogues. This Lady has likewise added to the stook of Love Literature for young Misses. HOLIDAY THIS DAY A'* THE STOCK. EXCHANGE. Consols, yesterday, 6n J 68 Port Betos. FALMOUTH, August 10. SALISBURY, MONDAY, AUGUST 14, 1309. On Tuesday last the Mayor of the Town and County of l'oole, as Admiral of the Haven and Port there, accompanied by a great number of the Burgesses and Inhabitants of Poole, perambulated in procession the Boundaries of the said Haven and Port by sea and by land, according to antient custom ; and as the day proved fine, with the firing of guns, music playing, the great number of streamers and colours flying from the vessels in the harbour and pleasure boats and sloops that accompanied the Mayor's barge, ( which exhibited a beautiful Union, with tbe Arms of Poole ill the centre) with the repeated huzzas from the populace on the shore and in the boats, the whole pro- duced an effect the most agreeable that can be imagined. Each time the Charter was read by the Town Clerk, and the Boundaries proclaimed by the Mayor, halfpence, penny- pieces, and sixpences to a considerable amount were thrown amongst the boys, ( which created no little diversio ) to cause them to remember si; ch boundaries. After the Charter had been read at North Haven Point, and an humber barrel carried out to sea and left floating in the water as far as it could be discerned with the naked eye from the shore, and the Mayor proclaimed the liberties and jurisdiction of Poole to extend so far, the company, to the number of between two and three hundred, about three o'clock in the afternoon, sat down with the Mayor to an excellent cold collation, in a large commodious booth erected for the purpose on the sands, ( which collation, with the wines, was admirably well served by Heather) and after enjoying themselves with great conviviality till about seven o'clock in the evening, they emb rked and set sail for Poole, where, having arrived and landed amidst a great concourse of spectators, and the firing of guns, music playing, and repeated huzzas, and having accom- panied the Mayor to his house, they took leave of each other with mutual satisfaction in this day's diversion. The sport at this meeting was little calculated to add to tbe glories of the Turf;— the honours of Rockingham and Dungqnnon,— of Diamond aud Hainbletonian,— remain uneclipsed ; bat these high- famed horses never attracted to Newmarket half the display of beauty and fashion which op this occasion graced the Downs of Blaudford. The balls on both nights were crowded, almost all the Dorsetshire families of rank and opulenfe attending; of whom 250 sat down to the . upper given by the Steward ( the Earl of Ilchester), which consisted ot every luxury that could be procured, and was served up by Mr. Worley, of the Crown Inn, in the fir t style of elegance. BRITFORD FAIR, near this city, was held on Sa- turday, The number ' of Sheep and Lambs penned amounted to 26,000, - and but very few remained uir sold. The sellers anticipated a brisk sale, and in this instance were not disappointed, owing to the very productive season for turnips in the upland countries. The prices were full per head dearer than last vear: Ewes fetched from 24s. to 35s. per, head, Wethers from 35s. to 46s. per head, Lambs from 15s. to 23s. per head. SPOR TING.— Actiotifor T>- esp< tst after Notice.— Simpkins v. Hunt. This action was commenced by John Simpkins, a tenant of Francis Dugtlale' Astlev, E- q. of Everley, against- Henry Hunt, Esq. of Sans Souci' Cottage, for sporting, on the plaintiff! s lipids after notice. Judginent being suffered to go by default, a writ of enquiry was ex- ecuted in the Sheriff Court, at Warmidsfer, on Tuesday last, where a respectable Jury was impanelled to assess the damages, which were laid at one hundred pounds. After a very patient heating and a strict investigation of this case by the Court, the Jury returned their verdict, " that the Plaintiff had sustained No DAMAGE,'? and it was entered on the record accordingly. At the Assizes at Bodmin, for the coqnty of Cormyall, there were only nine causes, of little public importance, and but eight prisoners. William Masters, tried on a capital indictment for stealing upwards of 1 cwt. of cordage, a quantity of rosin, lead, and copper sheathing, the property ot' hi. Majesty, was found guilty, and received sentence of death.— Anne Taylor was coqvicted of conceal- ing tbe birth of her jjastard child, and sentenced lo two years hard labour.— Two pi isoners were acquitted; and the bills preferred against the other four were returned " Igno- ramus." A tremendous storm came on here on Thursday evening i— the lightning was extremely vivid, tbe peals of thunder loud and awful, and the rain descended in tor- rants. About nine o'clock a flash of lightning illuminated the whole horizon, and was followe^ by a crash of thun- der more loud and awful than any by which . it had been preceded. The Mercury stage coach from London' to Exeter was then near Woodyat's Inn; a sailor on the roof was struck dead by the lightning, and at the same instant oue of the horses was killed by it. A woman who sat on the roof by tbe side of tbe sailor declares that the stroke was visible, that she saw the lightning on his face, and in the eagerness of her first sensations, endeavoured to brush it off with her hand.—. The woman vras unhurt,- as were the other passengers and coachman.— A tree in the Clo > e of Sarum, in the field adjacent to the Bishop's garden, was struck by the lightning, the bal k peeled off Ui a remark- able way, and scattered to the distance of JO feet, and four fat sheep at. the foot of the tree were struck dead by the lightning. We have not yet heard of any other fatal accident by the lightning.— The windows in the green- house, & c. of the Rev. Mr. Ogle, at Knoyle, weie broken to pieces by the hail.
