N° 19- 1 o N F E E S, G R A T U- 1 T I E S, & c.—( Excifc Duties. ) [ 55 I No. The Examination of JOHN SMART, Esquire, Accountant General of Excife j taken upon Oath, the 28th & 29th April, and 12th May 1808. This Examinant faith, That a general order, bearing date the 22d OCtober 1807, was iffued by the Board to the Collectors of Excife, to take credit in the firft inftance for the amount of every remittance to the Receiver General, whether by Bills or Bank Notes, in the firft Weekly AbftraCt and Quarterly Account, after fuch remittance is fent ; and at the time of fending it, to give notice of the particulars thereof to the Accountant General, who was dire& ed to give a conditional credit for fuch Bills until paid. This order is not enforced nor generally obeyed ; out of 33 ColleCtors, about 10 take credit for remittances as they make them, and the remaining 23 for acquittances only. This Examinant is of opinion, that there can be no objection to the giving of credit for Bills as remitted, provided the Accountant General receives weekly from the Receiver General fuch information as may enable him to check the Accounts tranfmitted by the ColleCtors; and provided that Acquittances for Bills remitted fhould no longer be iffued. Upon mature reflection, Examinant is of opinion, that this mode of keeping ColleCtors Accounts would tend to fimplify the bufinefs. J. S. Rochfort. Fredk Geale.
