CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputes Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Proper * that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear tine Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for tbe insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Setters addressed to the Editor BSlUSt toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 1st instant, the body of a newly- born female child was found dead in Sand well- park, Westbromwich, and an in- quest held before Edwin Hooper, Esq., coroner, and a verdict of Wilful Murder' returned against some person or persons unknown : a reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government,- to any. person or persons who shall give such in- formation and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and con- viction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to the same result. Information to be given to Colonel Hogg, Chief Constable, Stafford ; to Major McKnight, Deputy Chief Constable, Westbromwich ; or at any of the County Constabu- lary Stations.— Bow- street, August 26. Description of three men charged with night poaching and with unlawfully and maliciously cutting and wounding Kenneth McPhail, a constable of the North Riding of York- shire, at the township of Eston, near Middlesbrough, in the execution of his duty, on the night of the 14th instant : ROBERT KITCHING alias WATSON, 32 to 34 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, brown hair, small brown whiskers, fair complexion, proportionately built; dressed in fustian coat, waistcoat, and trousers, strong navvy boot: is an ironstone miner. JOHN TAYLOR alias THORPE, 25 to 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, rather long light brown hair, no whiskers, few light hairs on chin end, pale thin face, proportionately built, rather lowers his head when walking, and generally walks with his hands in his trousers pockets; dressed in dark cloth cap which he wears rather on one side, either fustian or brown velveteen coat, fustian trousers, strong navvy boots, and sometimes wears a yellow silk handkerchief : he is a miner or labourer. EDWARD MOUGHTON, alias NORFOLK TEDDY, 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, small brown whiskers, brown hair, one leg rather longer than the other, narrow across the chest, rather long neck ; dressed in a dark cloth or hair cap, often dresses in fustian coat, cotton cord or fustian trousers, and strong navvy boots : is a native of Norfolk, and was three months in Norwich Castle last winter for night poaching, and is a miner or labourer. Information to he given to Mr. Smith, Superintendent, Stokesley, or to Sergeant J. Milner, South Exton, near Middlesbro', North Riding Constabulary, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, August 24. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the evening of the 21st instant, at the railway station, Folkestone, an open- faced gold Watch, maker Barwise, London, No. 8681, the bow is broken off. Information to be given to Mr. Martin, Superin- tendent, Folkestone, Kent.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen, at 10 p. m. on the 22nd instant, from the person of G. Bowater, of Nelson- square, Blackfriars- road, whilst in the London- road, a double- bottomed gold lever hunting Watch, sunk sconds, enamelled dial, maker Alfred Goad, Islington, No. 6062. By a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, carried a cape on his arm.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, August 26. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, at Brighton, during the race week, a gold engine- turned English lever Watch, double- bottomed, gold dial, capped, jewelled in 8 holes, chronometer balance, No. 4705,' J. U.' engraved in a garter on an oval shield on the back case ; attached to the watch was a snake pattern gold Albert Chain. £ 2 reward will he paid on the property being restored to its owner. Information to be given to Mr. James Flanagan, Leominster, near Arundel, West Sussex.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen, 6 p. m. 19th instant, from the person of Mr. Barker, of 12, Chapel- street, while in a irowd in Lamb's Conduit- st., a gold Geneva Watch, gold dome, maker Vickers, Pall Mall. Supposed by a man, 27 years if age, 5 feet high ; dressed in dark clothes and hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, Au- gust 26. Stolen T30 p. m. on 21st instant, from the person of Mrs. Heckless, of 10, Alfred- terrace, Upper Holloway, while in the Camden- road, a gold Watch, makers Savory and Son, Cornhill. ' Annie died August, 1847,' engraved on back. By a man and woman, both about 22 years of age, middle height, respectably dressed in black.— Metropolitan Police, S Division, August 26. Stolen from the person at Horfield, on the evening of the 17th instant, whilst in the passage of the ' Horfield Inn,' two Watches of the following description, viz.: a large- sized silver patent Lever, maker's name, Roberts, Bath ; the other a double- case silver hunting Watch, patent lever, No. 9074. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent T. L. Box, Staple Hill, near Bristol; or to P. C. Edwin Baglin, Police Station, Hor- field .— Bow- street, August 24. Stolen from the person at Burton- upon- Trent, on the 19th instant, a silver lever Watch, silver dial and gold figures, No. 3687, maker's name M. Harrison. Information to be given to Mr. Chief Superintendent Bergen, Burton- upon- Trent, or at any Police Station in Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 24. Stolen from the person of a lady on the 15th instant, whilst travelling north in the railway near Stafford, a gold Geneva Watch, No. 92356, maker's name Waterhouse, of Geneva. Supposed by a man who is travelling to Liverpool. All expenses will he paid on the recovery of the watch. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Oswell, Stafford.— Bow- street, August 24. Stolen from the person, at Burton- upon- Trent flower show, on the 19th instant, a silver Geneva Watch, silver dial and steel hands, No. 12380, with steel Albert Chain attached. In- formation to be given to Mr. Chief Superintendent Bergen, Burton- upon- Trent, or at any police Station in Staffordshire,— Bow- street, Aug. 21. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 8th instant, Dany- y- Castle House, Crickhowell, Breconshire, the residence of Mr. E. J. C. Davies, was burglariously entered, and a Dressing Case, containing the following articles, stolen : a gold and carbuncle Brooch, form of a Knot, with round locket carbuncle centre suspended; a gold snake Bracelet, carbuncle snap; a gold chain Bracelet with blue enamelled locket; two cameo Brooches without pins; three silver Knives, mother- o'- pearl handles ; a dark blue enamelled Locket studded with diamonds and diamonds suspended ; two diamond Earrings, one without a fastening ; a diamond Pin ; a black ' enamelled Memorial Ring, three large Diamonds, inscribed ' To memory of Jane Homfray'; a tur- quoise and cornelian Seal Ring ; a turquoise Ring with heart suspended ; two pearl hoop Rings ; an opaland diamond Ring ; and a small hair Chain, gold snap. £ 5 reward will be paid to auy person who will give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the stolen property, by Mr. Davies. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent D. Evans, Crickhowell; or to the Chief Constable of Breconshire.— Bow- street, August 26. Between 1 and 6 p. m. on the 24th instant., the cottage of John Coborn, of the parish of Sulhampstead Bannister, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom, viz.: a pair of dark brown mixture cloth Trousers, man's size, open front, much worn round the bottom of legs ; alight- colour mixture Overcoat, man's size, with a pocket each side, outside, and a breast pocket inside, and three or four buttons in front covered with a lighter colour cloth ; a large- sized old- fashioned Cashmere Shawl, with a large- sized shell pattern border; and a short dark Slop, man's size, much worn at sleeves. A man of the following description was seen loitering about the cottage, viz.: between 30 and 40 years of age, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, of gipsy complexion, long black curly hair at the sides, and rough hair about the face, rather stout; dressed in a dark cloth coat, with a lighter coloured patch on the back, dark corduroy trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent George Crook, Berks Constabu- lary Station, Reading.— Bow- street, August 26. Between 10.45 p. m. on the 22nd and 7.15 a. m. on the 23rd instant the dwelling- house of Mr. John Moulding, of Brighton- grove, Rusholme, Lancashire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen: a black cloth single- breasted Walking Coat, black silk velvet collar, two pockets behind and one in left breast, lined with black silk, had a glass tube in a slot under the top button hole on the left side, and in one of the hind pockets a pair of dog- skin gloves ; two silver Tea Spoons and a Salt Spoon, king's pattern ; a silver Mustard Spoon ; and a woollen Table- cover, 4 yards long by 2 yards wide, crimson ground with black flowers. Also, during the same night, the dwelling- house of Mr. Alber Dunderdale, of Norman- road, Rusholme, was broken and entered, and a cloth Table- cover, 5 yards by 2 yards, red with black stars, stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Sergeant Daniel Stafford, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- st., August 24. Between 9 a. m. and 8 p. m. on the 20th instant, the dwell- ing- house of Thomas Wheatley, No. I, Limefield- terrace, of Crumpsall, was broken and entered, and the following pro- perty stolen therefrom, viz.: a black nappy cloth Coat, of fashionable make, has two pockets inside skirts, and one inside left breast; a black cloth Vest, single- breasted ; a blue cloth Surtout, Coat, the skirts lined with black alpaca, two pockets outside the skirts, and one outside left breast; a dark- brown mixture Overcoat, two pockets outside skirts, and one outside left breast; a pair of black cloth Trousers, not lined ; a red silk Handkerchief with white spots ; a light yellow ditto with brown spots; a white ditto with • yellow border ; two gold shirt Studs ; and a gold Brooch, small size, set with cornelian stone. Information to be given to the Superintendent of the County Police, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, August 24. During the nights of the 17th and 18th instant, three public- houses in the outskirts of the borough of Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, were broken into, a quantity of spirits, & c., drank, and the following articles stolen : an old german silver verge Watch, without hands, maker Lowdon ; two Door Keys ; a black deerstalker Hat; a Pocket- knife, six blades, white handle ; 2s. 6d. in copper; £ lb. of Tobacco ; and 1 lb. of Cheese. By two men : one, about 5 feet. 8 inches high, dressed in dark clothes ; the other, about 20 years of age, dressed as a navvy, and wore a cap. They attempted on the same evening to break into another inn, but were surprised in the act. They are supposed to have committed similar offences about Shrews- bury lately, and are believed to be located in that town. Information to be given at the Police Office, Welshpool, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, August 24. During the night of the 19th or early on the morning of the 20th instant, the offices of Messrs Brettell and Cartwright, Blowers- green, near Dudley, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom: one of Bailey's Steam Guages, either painted or japanned green; five packets of |- incll iron Tacks, 1000 in each packet; four small Engine Brasses, two oval, and two square ; a steam black Valve ; the brasses would weigh about 8 lbs. Information to be given to Mr. Chief Superintendent Burton, Police Station, Dudley, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 21. On the night of the 19th instant, the house of Thomas Jones of Llywlys, in the county of Salop, innkeeper, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen there- from : 1 Pocket Knife, with two blades, buc'kiiorn handle; 1 Pen Knife, with two blades, the end broken of each blade ; 1 silver Pencil Case, 1 silver Penholder, 1 silver Seal, 2 small Keys on a ring, 1 large Key, 1 pot of Black Currant Jam, I bottle of Raspberry Brandy, 1 Doctors' Book by Buchan, and a few Coppers in money. The house of Mr. Roberts, of ' The Pant-,' innkeeper, was also broken and entered the same night, and about 10s. in silver and copper stolen therefrom. Both supposed by the men advertised in the Police Gazette 3rd instant as having committed the burglary at Pontesbury, on the night of the 27th ultimo. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- st., Auq. 21. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, on the 18th instant, the property of Mr. James Cassidy, Church- street, Warrington, a patent silver lever Watch, engine- turned cases, with garter in centre of outside case, cream- colourea dial, has one gold aud one steel hand, compensation balance, No. 10692, maker, Rother- ham, Coventry ; also a large- sized lady's patent lever gold Watch, engine- turned case, with garter in centre of outside case, gold figured dial, No. 12367, maker, Rotherham, Coventry; a lady's gold Guard Chain, a little worn ; also a quantity of best metal Spoons, part of which have been recovered. GEO. NAYLOR is apprehended, charged with committing the offence, and is remanded until the 24th instant. Information to be given to the nearest Police Station, or to Mr. J. S. Mac- michael, Chief Constable, Warrington.— Bow- street, August 21. During the night of the 19th or early on the morning of the 20th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Young, at Grand- pout, Berks, near Oxford, was burglariously broken into, and ten silver Spoons stolen therefrom, viz.: two Table Spoons, marked ' I. E. H.,' two ditto, marked ' M. J. Y.,' two ditto, with crest, an arm with hand holding a dagger, two ditto marked ' W.,' and two Salt Spoons, one the shape of a fire shovel. Information to be given to Superintendent P. Hedger, Berks Constabulary, Abingdon.— Bow- street, August 21. Between 12 and 4 a. m. on the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Lee Steere, Esq., at the parish of Ockley, Surrey, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 2 gold Hunting Watches, one engine- turned, crest— a lion's paw rising out of a crown and bloody arm holding a dagger with serpent, to the other watch was attached a gold Chain and Key with a bloodstone for handle, and same crest; six gold ornamental Scarf Pins, one a mourning with a swinging oynx stone, one a serpent with a piece of coral through it, one a large round head set with various coloured stone, one a horse's head with a gold bridle, one a fox's head in full stretch, one a dog's head made out of a pebble, and one plain gold ; six silver Pencilcases ; a small silver Toothpick representing a sword in a sheath ; two small Shirt Studs, tur- quoise and gold ; Thirteen silver Tea- Spoons; twelve gold Seals, various devices engraved thereon, the larger ones have either coat of arms, crest, and ' L. S.' with motto; a curious old silver Seal witn spread eagle; two gold Eye- glasses; a silver Pen- knife, four blades, with spread eagle's head; and five Sovereigns : most of the property has the same crest as the watches. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent John Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, Au- gust 21. Between 9 a. m. on the 15th instant, and 7 p. m. on the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. J. Gatward, senr., of Hitchin, was entered by means of a latch key, and the follow- ing articles stolen therefrom : a silver hunting Watch, jewelled 2 " POLICE GAZETTE. August 7. movements, makers name ' Samuel Gatward,' Huntingdon ; a pair of Sugar Tongs, chain pattern, marked ' E: G.'; a Dessert Spoon; a Tea ditto ; a Salt ditto; a Mustard ditto ; a Tea Caddy ditto ; two tops of pepper Cruets ; a top of a mustard ditto ; a gold Pin ( true- lovers knot) ; a gold Seal ( the im- pression of a pair of scales) ; and a silver Roman Coin. Pangbourne, Inspector of Police, Hitchin, Herts.— Bow- street,, August 21. - HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Supposed to have been stolen from Lynsted Park, about the 6th instant, the property of Mr. John Blaxland, eight Kent Sheep, marked ' B.' with red paint. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent T. M. Green, Kent County Constabulary, Sittingbourne.— Bow- street, Avgust 26. Supposed to have been stolen, from an orchard in the parish of Lynsted, on or about the 17th instant, the property of Mr. Thomas Wanstall, a Kent ewe Sheep and Lamb. In- formation to be given to Mr. Superintendent T. M. Green, Kent County Constabulary, Sittingbourne. — Bow- street, August 26. The dark brown Cart Mare supposed to have been stolen from Tyddyn Mawr, in the parish of Llanaber, in the county of Merioneth, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 25th instant, has been found.— Bow— street, August 26. Supposed to have been stolen between 8 p. m. on the 19th and 5 a. m. on the 20th instant., from a field at Tredegar, in the parish of Bedwellty, a light brown Mare, half hred, 5 years old, about 15 hands high, long black switch tail and mane, a l lun LO small white streak down the face, hind legs white, a lump j and Prees. He was in February last for about the size of a walnut on back caused by the saddle, and is in very good condition, the property of Mr. Thomas Price, Tredegar. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent H. Fowler, Tredegar Iron Works, Monmouthshire.— Bow- street, August 26. Supposed to have been stolen, between the 15th and 18th instant, from a field, near Tyddynmawr, in the parish of Llanaber, in the county of Merioneth, the property of Morris Jones, farmer, a dark brown cart Mare, 9 years old, about 15 hands high, small white star on forehead, black legs, mane, and tail, very strong, and in good condition. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Dolgelly, North Wales.— Bow- street, August 24. Supposed to have been stolen from a field in the parish of Ashby Folville, Leicestershire, on the night of the 12th instant, fifteen ewe Sheep, ruddle marked across the loins, a bit cut off the near ear. Information to he given to Mr. John Platts, Superintendent, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, August 24. Supposed to have been stolen from an orchard in the parish of Bredgar, on the 10 or 17th ultimo, seventeen Kent Teg Sheep, slightly marked between the shoulders with blue tiver, which is supposed to be worn off, the property of Mr. Richard Wood, information to be given to Supertendent T. M. Green, Kent, County Constabulary, Sittingbourne.— Bow- street, August 24. Supposed to have been stolen from a field in the parish of Eastling, on the 7th instant, four Kent Lambs, marked ' B. M.' in pitch, punch- hole in the off ear, and a slit in the near ear, the property of Mr. Baker Murton, farmer. Information to b § given to Superintendent T. M. Green, Kent County Constablu- lary, Sittingbourne.— Bow- street, Avgust 24. Supposed to have been stolen from a field in the parish of Mucking, Essex, on the night of the 17th instant, two Lambs, of the Kentish breed. Information to be given at the Police Station, Orsett, Essex..- Bow- street, August 24. Supposed to have been stolen on or about the 18th inst,, from Easthampstead, Berks, a chesnut cob Horse, 14 hands high, white face, hind feet white, some white on the fetlocks of fore feet, short square tail, in very good condition, is rather weak in the knees. Information to be given to Frederick Dyke, ' Roebuck ' Inn, Binfield, or to Mr. Superintendent O'Neill, Constabulary Station, Wokingham, Wiltshire.— Bow- street, August 24. Supposed to have been stolen on the 19th instant, from Ascot Heath, Berks, a cross bred Alderney Cow, 5 years old, strawberry colour, small horns, the two front hoofs are neat and compact, and the hind ones are large and spread out ; she is in full milk, and about three months gone in calf; the pro- perty of Mr. Attfield, beer- house keeper, Ascot. Information to be given to Mr. Herbert Reece, Inspector, County Police Station, Windsor, or to Sergeant Willian Mansell, Sunninghill, Berkshire.— Bow- street, August 24. A boy who gave the name of JOSEPH PRICE, of Wolverhampton, was apprehended at Bridgnorth, by the Borough Police, on the 20th instant, on suspicion of stealing a Pony which he was offering for sale, of the following descrip- tion : a black horse Pony, aged, about 11 hands high, marked ' W.' on the off side, and ' R.' on the near side, under the saddle. It is supposed to have been stolen from Wolverhamp- ton, or neighbourhood. The boy is remanded. Information to be given to John Cole, Borough Police Office, Bridgnorth, Salop.— Bow- street, August 24. On the morning of the 4th instant, two Sheep were killed and the carcasses stolen and carried away from a field in Whelley, in the borough of Wigan. Three men, viz., JOHN WATSON, JOHN MONKS, and WILLIAM THOMPSON alias BENTLEY, have been apprehended and committed for trial at the quarter sessions for the borough of Wigan, charged with killing and stealing the same; and a man named RICHARD LEA, who escaped from custody, is still at large, and is of the following description : about 37 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, sallow com- plexion, high cheek- bones, is a collier, and it is supposed that he will be working as such in the county of Durham or the West Riding of Yorkshire. At the March assizes at Liverpool in 1855, he was sentenced along with Watson to four years' penal servitude for burglary at Wigan. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Mr. Wm. Simm, Chief Constable, Wigan, Lancashire.— Bow- street, August 24. Found on the Bower Court farm, in the parish of Rock, in the county of Worcester, on the 19th instant, and supposed to have been stolen, a dark brown mare Donkey, aged, has a white speck near the sight of right eye, is in good condition, and has no shoes on. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Raby, Police Station, Great Witley, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 24. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at the Cwm farm, in the parish of Abbeydore, Herefordshire, since about 15th June last, three Welsh Ewes, long tails, and marked he is well- known about Whitchurch convicted at Baschurch petty sessions stealing clothes from Webscott Widdle. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Ivins, County Police Office, Shrewsbury ; or to P. C. Thomas Lewis, Harmer Hill, near Shrewsbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 26. Description of CHARLES MARTIN, who absconded from Stony Stratford, in the county of Bucks, on the 23rd instant: he is 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, light brown hair, fresh complexion, stoops when walking, is a baker, and a native of Great Cutwortb, neai Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire; dressed in a tweed suit, lace- up boots, sometimes spring- side boots, and white hat with black band round it. He is charged with stealing from the dwelling- house of George Pinfold, watchmaker, Stony Stratford, fwo long silver watch Guards, and a plated gold albert Guard) with a seal at one end in the shape of a tobacco- stopper, and a key at the other. He is about 65 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, little or no whiskers, hair cut very short behind and turned grey, and rather large hazel eyes ; dressed in a brown velveteen jacket, dark trousers with a brown patch in front, dark vest with one or two buttons off, black bowler hat turned very brown, and had an old umbrella with him : he stated that he was a cooper, and had worked at Corsham and Bath ; he generally tries for private lodgings.
