Reginald Ashley Staines, Cases Nos. 53 ( Vol. I.) and 23 ( Vol. XIII.), was sentenced at York Ass., 3- 5- 1927, to 12 mos. impt. for obtaining credit contrary to Debtors Act, and obtaining money by false pretences. Called on a minister of religion, asked to be recommended to suitable lodgings, was given a letter of introduction through which he made the acquaintance of a person who was in financial difficulties. He offered to invest £ 100 in the business and gave a cheque for that amount. He then obtained a loan of £ 5 by stating he was short of ready cash. Four other cases of a similar nature were taken into consideration when sentence was passed. J : I 145. William Alexander, Case No. 253 ( Vol. I.), was sentenced as George William Alexander at West- minster Pol. Ct. ( L.), 2- 5- 1927, to 9 mos. impt. for false pretences ( 3 cases), ( i) Obtained a sum of money from a man by representing he could find him employment on a liner, ( ii) Said he had just come from Mexico and had valuable information about some land there, borrowed money and absconded. Three other cases of. a similar nature at Liverpool, Manchester and on B were taken into consideration when sentence was passed. * 4e. / 147. Charles Claude Ward, Cases Nos. 230 ( Vol. II.), and 289 ( Vol. XIII.), was sentenced as Bertram Watson at C. C. C., 28- 4- 1927, to 3 yrs. pen. for larceny ( 2 cases). With a confederate obtained permits to view occupied houses for sale and when left alone stole jewellery, etc. Edward Lewis, C. R. O. No. 7693- 1927, was convicted with him. Albert Sheppard, Case No. 335 ( Vol. III.), was sentenced as Albert Keys at Gravesend Pol Ct., 20- 4- 1927, to 6 and 6 mos. impt. ( cons.) for larceny ( 2 cases). Method as in ( i) original case- One other case of a similar nature at Romford was taken into consideration when sentence was passed. J Henry Thompson, Case No. 396 ( Vol. III.), was sentenced as Henry Jackson at C. L. S., 26- 4- 1927, to 12 mos. impt for stealing money from public house bar. Method as in original case. Harry Nash, Case No. 18 ( Vol. IV.), was sentenced at C. L. S., 29- 4- 1927, to 12 mos. impt. for break- ing and entering a public house. Forced the lock and when disturbed drove away in a motor van. J Thomas Davies, Case No. 92 ( Vol. IV.), was sentenced at Birmingham Sess., 3- 5- 1927, to 18 mos. impt. for false pretences. Obtained food and lodgings. Method as in original case. * William John Michael, Case No. 363 ( Vo). IV.), was sentenced at Bow Street Pol. Ct. ( L.), 16- 4- 1927. to 3 and 3 mos. impt. ( cons.) and 3 mos. impt. ( conc.) for stealing articles from churches ( 3 cases). Method as in Case No. 427 ( Vol. XI.). One other case of a similar nature was taken / into consideration when sentence was passed. 148. James Kirby, Case No. 434 ( Vol. IV.), was sentenced as John Curley at C. L. S., 27- 4- 1927, to 3 yrs. pen. and 5 yrs. p. d. for burglary and being a h. c. Method as in original case. J - J Charles Wooder, Case No. 35 ( Vol. V.), was sentenced at Westminster Pol. Ct. ( L.), 22- 4- 1927, to 3 mos. impt. for being a suspected person— attempting to pick pockets. Edward Graham, Case No. 422 ( Vol. V.), Frank Martin, Case No. 442 ( Vol. V.) and Charles Horrigan, C. R. O. No. 827- 1907, were convicted with him. 149. George Sheldon, Case No. 94 ( Vol. V.), was sentenced as George Shelton at C. C. C., 4- 5- 1927, to 3 yrs. pen. and 5 yrs. p. d. for warehousebreaking, larceny, possessing housebreaking implements by night, and being a h. c. Method as in original case, except in this case after breaking in he ripped off the back of a safe and stole the contents. Lily Chamberlain, Case No. 154 ( Vol. V.), was sentenced as Hilda Harris at C. C. C., 6- 4- 19^/, to 3 yrs. pen. and 5 yrs. p. d. for larceny— visitor ( 3 cases) and being a h. c. Method as in case No. 347 ( Vol. X.). Seventeen other cases of a similar nature were taken into consideration Avhen sentence was passed; J Edward Graham, Case No. 422 ( Vol. V.), was sentenced at Westminster Pol. Ct. ( L.), 22- 4- 1927 to 3 mos. impt. for being a suspected person— attempting to pick pockets. Charles Wooder, Case No. 35 ( Vol. V.), Frank Martin, Case No. 442 ( Vol. V.) and Charles Horrigan, C. R. O. No. 827- 1907, were convicted with him. ^ Frank Martin, Case No. 442 ( Vol. V.), was sentenced at Westminster Pol. Ct. ( L.), 22- 4.1927, to 3 mos. impt. for being a suspected person— attempting to pick pockets. Charles Wooder, Case No. 35 ( Vol. V.), Edward Graham, Case No. 422 ( Vol. V.) and Charles Horrigan, C. R. O. No. 827- 1907, were convicted with him. ^ 50. ^ Sidney Baxter, Case No. 230 ( Vol. VI.), was sentenced at Guildhall Pol. Ct. ( L.), 3- 5- 1927, to 6 mos. impt. for stealing a parcel from a motor car left unattended in the street. V Arthur Sparrow, Case No. 394 ( Vol. VI.), was sentenced as Arthur Edward Sparrow at Roborough Pol. Ct., 4- 5- 1927, to 4, 4 and 4 mos. impt. ( cons.) for false pretences ( 3 cases). Method as in Case No. 51 ( Vol. VIII.). ^ Ann Baxter, Case No. 408 ( Vol. VI.), was sentenced at North London Pol. Ct., 2- 5- 1927, to 3 mos. impt. for being a suspected person— loitering. Pushed amongst customers in a large store. S^ rah McMillan, C. R. O. No. 13318- 1922, was convicted with her. 151. Albert William Pyrke, Case No. 414 ( Vol. VI.), was sentenced at C. C. C., 4- 5- 1927, to 12 mos. impt. for conspiracy to defraud— long firm fraud. With confederates represented he was carrying on genuine businesses as F. G. Morgan and Cuthbert J. Rotherham. Robert Cousins, C. R. O. No. 180- 1923, and Edward Allford, C. R. O. No. 5097- 1915, were convicted with him. J 152. William Vale, Case No. 479 ( Vol. VI.), was sentenced as Edward Henry Dixon at C. L. S., 28- 4- 1927, to 5 yrs. pen. for burglary, attempted burglary and possessing housebreaking implements by night. Smashed window in fanlight at rear of premises and effected entrance, also smashed window in fanlight in roof over a shop. IVB 153. George Martin, Case No. 519 ( Vol. VI.), was, as Alfred Jones, at Marylebone Pol. Ct. ( L.), 4- 5- 1927, bound over in £ 5 for 12 mos. for larceny. Stole 7 pairs of lady's shoes from inside shop. V Alfred James Alderman, Case No. 158 ( Vol. VII.), was sentenced as Alfred Alderman at Brentford P. Sess. ( L.), 28- 4- 1927, to 4 mos. impt. for cyclestealing ( 9 cases) and estreating his recognizances. Method as in original case. Thirteen other cases of a similar nature were taken into consideration when sentence was passed. Alfred Cooke, C. R. O. No. 1256- 1910, and Antonio Alwyn Popoli, C. R. O. No. 8163- 1927, were convicted with him. 154.^ Cyril Frederick Wardle, Case No. 179 ( Vol. VII.), was sentenced as Percy Hawkins at Doncaster Pol. Ct., 25- 4- 1927, to 6, 3 and 3 mos. impt. ( cons.) for stealing a motor car and petrol from the street and sparking plugs, etc., from garage. One other case was taken into consideration when sentence passed. 155. ' George Beesley Blackshaw, Case No. 364 ( Vol. VIII.), was sentenced as George Blackshaw at WTest London Pol. Ct., 25- 4- 1927, to 3 and 3 mos. impt. ( cons.) and 3 mos. impt. ( conc.), for obtaining charitable contributions by fraud ( 3 cases). Obtained sums of money from well- known literary people by stating he was out of employment and had an offer of woik at a distant town, but was without means to pay his railway fare. 156. William Townsley, Case No. 449 ( Vol. IX.), was sentenced as William Francis Townsley at Pontefract ( Boro.) Pol. Ct., 25- 4- 1927, to 6 and 6 mos. impt. ( cons.) for larceny ( 2 cases). Entered fa commercial hotel during opening hours and when unobserved stole jewellery, money and a fur coat. Two other cases of larceny were taken into consideration when sentence was passed. Charles Roper, C. R. O. No. 1981- 1911. was convicted with him. ^ William Jackson, Case No. 41 ( Vol. X.), was brought up 011 Home Office order and sentenced as Walter Vincent at Dover Pol. Ct., 26- 4- 1927, to 6 and 6 mos. impt. ( cons.) for larceny— trick ( 2 cases). Method as in original case. One other case of larceny— person at Oxford was taken into consideration when sentence was passed. 157r John James Haslam, Case No. 115 ( Vol. X.), was sentenced as John Shackle ton at Wigan ( Co.) Pol. Ct., 6- 5- 1927, to 4, 3 and 3 mos. impt. ( cons.) for obtaining food, lodgings and money by false pretences. Represented himself to be Captain Shackleton, V. C., D. C. M., Home Office expert steeplejack and a pensioner. He also imposed on publicans and borrowed money by stating he was about to employ a number of men in the district. Paul Mellor, Case No. 359 ( Vol. X.), was sentenced at Toronto ( Canada), Pol. Ct., 23- 2- to 6 mos. impt. for breach of Immigration Act. Frank Howarth, Case No. 412 ( Vol. X.), was sentenced as Frank Metcalf at Blackburn P. Sess., a 14- 4- 1927, to 2 and 1 mos. impt. ( cons.) for being found on enclosed premises and assault on police. * lo/ James Moore, Case No. 450 ( Vol. X.), was sentenced as James Moore Riddle at Bow Street Pol. Ct. ( L.), 27- 4- 1927, to 3 mos. impt. for being a suspected person— loitering ( ringing the changes). Method as in ( lii) original case. 15^ George Fish, Case No. 189 ( Vol. XI.), was sentenced at Wakefield ( W. R.) P. Sess., 2- 5- 1927, to 6 mos. impt. for obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences. Represented he was on com- pensation at the local colliery, also that he had a sum of money in a co- operative society. Stayed a few days and absconded. Five other cases of a similar nature were taken into consideration when / Sentence was passed. I/ 160. Charles Morton, Case No. 484 ( Vol. XI.), was sentenced at C. C. C., 26- 4- 1927, to 17 mos. impt. for forgery ( 6 cases) and obtaining credit by fraud. In the name of E. A. McKillop Clark forged the ^ declarations of transfer, etc., relating to share certificates and obtained the money from a bank. 161. Joseph Mitchell, Case No. 28 ( Vol. XII.), was sentenced as James Taylor at Birmingham Sess., < 5- 1927, to 18 mos. impt. for housebreaking. Method as in original case. / 162. Harriet Wakefield, Case No. 305 ( Vol. XII.), was sentenced as Harriet Handley at C. L. S., 28- 4- 1927, to 9 mos. impt. for receiving. WTas found in possession of a number of lady's dresses which were found to have been stolen by means of warehousebreaking. May Hayday, C. R. O. No. 3283- 1926 was convicted with her. / Frank Lewis, Case No. 350 ( Vol. XII.), was sentenced as Frederick Edwards at Westminster Pol. Ct. ( L.), 2- 5- 1927, to 6 mos. impt. for stealing a motor mascotand yachting jacket from unattended motor cars. / John Thomas Cooke, Case No. 466 ( Vol. XII.), was sentenced at Wood Green P. Sess. ( L.), 6- 5- 1927, to 6 mos. impt. for obtaining two motor tyres by false pretences. Method as in original case. A case of false pretences at Manchester and one of leaving his wife chargeable to the Guardians in the M. P. D. were taken into consideration when sentence was passed. LATEST INFORMATION. / George Watson, Case No. 233 ( Vol. I.), was liberated, 29- 4- 1927, into the M. P. D. ^ Charles Henry May, Cases Nos. 265 ( Vol. I.), and 236 ( Vol. XIII.), died in a nursing heme at Withington, Manchester, 15- 2- 1927. William Seymour, Case No. 159 ( Vol. 11.). was liberated, 11- 5- 1927, into the M. P. D1 Intended address : 43, Devonshire Street. As the latest information or subsequent conviction of criminals, whose particulars have been inserted in Supplement A, will appear in each issue at the end of the cases, the original numbers should be cross- referenced on printed line; provided for that purpose. SPECIAL NOTICE. When any person whose portrait and description have appeared in Supplement A is again arrested for any offence, and on account of being locally known the finger prints are not sent to C. R. O. for the purpose of search, it is requested that particulars of such conviction be sent to Criminal Record Offi? e, as soon as possible in order that they may appear in an early issue of Supplement A for the information of all Forces.
