Whitehead, Leigh. 17.— Stockport ( Boro.).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences ( 2 cases).— William Pickup, b. 1886, 5ft. 3in., medium build, c. pale, hair turning grey, bad teeth, clean shaven ; dress, dk. coat and vest, dk. grey mixture trousers, fancy socks, collar and tie, shoes. Called on complainant, a manager of a garage, and stated he was authorised to hire a car for three days to be used in the Conservative Rally on 17th, 18th and 19th July, by an ex- M. P. and other gentlemen ( false). Stated that it would cost about £ 5 or £ 6 per day and asked for a commission of 10s. per day. This was granted. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Stockport. 18.— Stockport ( Boro.).— For stealing ( lodgings) 6s. 6d., 14th inst.— Fred , b. 1879- 84, 5ft. 8 or 9in., c. fresh, hair and moustache dk., long thin features ; dress, dk. suit, collar and tie, slate coloured Trilby hat. Called at complainant's house, 12th inst., and asked for lodgings. Stated he had come from Chester to work on the laying of an underground cable and that his employer had instructed him to obtain lodgings for himself and a mate. The lady asked him for payment in advance, but he said his employer would pay her on Monday the 14th inst., was allowed to stay and on the morning of the 14th inst., left the house at the same time as complainant, who was going to work, but returned a short time later with complainant's son. About 2.30 a. m., 20th inst., a box trade motor van, was seen by a Constable to pass at a fast rate over Dartford Heath towards Dartford, index letters were obscured, but the numbers 2190 were visible. The car went down a cul- de- sac and the constable went back and tried to get in conversation with the driver.
