R. O. No. M/ 7196, b. 1906. Pre. con. of a minor offence at NEWCASTLE- UPON- TYNE. > Inf. to above office. 2.— C Division. - For obtaining money by false pretences.- Alice Scott, alias Madam Scott, b. 1868, 5ft. 5in., h. fair ( turning grey), e. grey, slight Irish accent ; fashionably dressed, probably striped silk dress or brown costume, picture hat. Carried on business as a costumier at 17- 21, Dering Street, W. Advertised in the Daily Telegraph for young ladies with deposit to train for the business. Obtained the deposit money and absconded. Warrant issued. Inf. to C. R. O. 4.— M Division.— For stealing ( trick, 2 cases) 5s.— B. Smith ( believed false), b. about 1888, 5ft. 10in., proportionate build, c. fresh, h. fair, clean shaven ; dress, grey suit, brown soft felt hat, carried mackintosh. Inserted advertisement in local paper of rooms to let, visited persons who replied, stated he was estate agents, representative, that he would hand over the key of premises on payment of 5s. deposit, to be returned if rooms were not taken. Received 2 sums of money and gave loser's an address where he said the rooms were situated. Subsequent enquiries showed that there were no vacant rooms at the address given and that he was not known by the estate agents mentioned. Inf. to C. R. O. 5.— R Division.— For stealing ( servant) lady's gold hunter watch, engraved flowers, monogram I. S. G. on cover; lady's rings, brooches, etc.-— James Porter, b. 1873, 5ft. 6in., thin build, h. brown ( turning grey), e. blue, clean shaven ; dress, grey suit, grey trilby hat, blue socks, boots. Inf. to C. R. O. 3.— D Division.— For stealing a Ford motor car, Case No. 107 current issue.— T. E. Statter, b. 1899, 5ft. 5in., medium build, h. brown, e. grey, clean shaven ; dress, navy blue suit, ( white stripe), grey trilby hat, brown shoes. A chauffeur. Wears pince- nez when driving. Was discharged from his situation as chauffeur, afterwards went to his late employer's garage, took the car and absconded. 6.— T Division.— For stealing ( servant) £ 4 10s., 6th inst.— B. G. de Putron, aliases Bert Savill and Graham, b. 1888, 5ft. 9in., slim build, c. fresh, e. blue, clean shaven, round shouldered ; dress, blue suit, grey trilby hat. Was employed as manager of a billiard hall, and took above amount from till. May be accompanied by a woman, short, stout build, c. fair ; believed a prostitute. Warrant issued. Inf. to C. R. O. Blake rt. forearm, In memory of my Brother 1. forearm ; dress, yellowish- grey rough tweed suit, sports jacket with sewn on band at back, imitation crocodile leather buttons, white canvas shoes. An engineer; native of Blairgowrie. Pre. con. of larceny, fraud, cycle- stealing and minor offences at PERTH, DING- WALL, STERLING ( Poter Taylor), ELGIN, KILMARNOCK ( Peter Irvine ' Taylor), and LEICESTER ( Peter Tavine Taylor). DERBYSHIRE. 8 - Bakewell ( Co.).— For stealing ( lodgings) £ 3, at Matlock Bath. 9th inst.— Thomas Scott, b. 1864. 5ft. 5 or 6in., well built, c. red, h. and moustache fair ; dress, shabby grey suit, soft collar, tie, boots. A general labourer ; native o{ Ripley. Obtained lodgings, stated he was about to receive a fortune of £ 8000, and had to go to his solicitors at Nottingham to draw the interest thereon. On the strength of his statement borrowed several sums of money from loser, and left ostensibly to go to Nottingham. The above amount was subsequently missed from a box in bedroom. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Campbell, Bakewell. 9.- Chesterfield ( Boro.).- Alexander Scott, Case No. 2, 13- 8- 23, is identical with Alexander Scott, alias Alexander Pringle Scott, C. R. O. No. 6436- 20, b. 1892, 5ft. 6£ in., c. fresh, h. and e. brown, nose been broken. Native of Scotland. Pre. con. of larceny on A and 1). Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Chesterfield. DURHAM. 10.- Darlington ( Co.).— James Pearson, Case No. 141, 15- 8- 23-, is identical with James Pearson, C. R. O. Dryden, Darlington. 11.— Felling- on- Tyne ( Co.).— Charles Kemster Pinch, Case No. 103, 8- 8- 23, is identical with Charles Kempster, C. R. O. No. S/ 34171, b. 1872, 5ft. 5fin., c. fresh, h. and e. brown ( blind rt.). A painter ; native of Southend. Pre. con. of larceny and a minor offence at BISHOP'S STORTFORD ( Charles Narcissus Kempster) and on D, G, K and TA. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Gargate, Felling- on- Tyne. 12.— Sunderland ( Boro.).— For forgery, between 2nd and 4th inst,— A Man, b. 1883 to 1888, slim build, dk. moustache. Loser handed an envelope containing cheque for £ 3 7s. 6d., payable to Hugo, through the London Joint City & Midland Bank, Ltd., Sunderland Branch, 2nd inst., to a postman. On 4th inst. the cheque was presented at the London Joint City & Midland Bank, Fawcett Street, for payment of £ 93 7s. 6d., the cheque having been altered to this amount and endorsed F. Hugo. The amount paid out by bank included the following £ 5 Bank of England notes :— M. Induced loser to cash cheques, drawn by H. E. Biddulph in favour of P. F. Gault, on Maldon ( Esssex) Branch of Barclay's Bank. The cheques were subsequently returned marked No Account. Seabrook ( Co.).— For stealing ( lodgings) at Hythe, 12th inst., It. grey pin stripe flannel suit.— Percy Skiller, b. about 1886, about 5ft. 8in., c. fair; dress, black coat and waistcoat, grey trousers, It. grey trilby hat, linen collar, blue bow, carried brown attache case. Stated he was inspector for the Shell Motor Spirit Company, and that he had a car at Hythe ( false). Left without paying, taking with him above suit. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Russell, Seabrook. 17.— Tunbridge Wells ( Boro.).— Leo Spinney, Case No. 134, 10- 8- 23, is identical with Leopold Spinney, C. R. O. No. 29- 14, b. 1883, 5ft. 8in., c. fresh, h. brown, e. grey, scar rt. eyebrow. A french polisher; native of Brighton. Took the money from a drawer at Convalescent Centre, St Annes- on- Sea, while left temporarily in charge. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Crapper, Fleetwood. 21.— Hurst Brook ( Co.).— For stealing ( servant) at Lees, 10th inst., lady's gold and platinum wrist watch, gold fingers, black numerals, bangle has broad links ; lady's gold dress ring, set 4 diamonds and 2 other stones ; do., set 5 green stones ( 1 missing) ; lady's gold wedding do. ; lady's gold brooch, oblong, red stone in centre ; pair lady's moleskin gauntlet gloves ; lady's white under skirt; and £ 3.— Jane Smith, alias Lily Smith, b. about 1883, 5ft. 6in., medium build, c. fresh, h. brown ( turning grey), no teeth upper jaw ; dress, brown tweed costume, yellow jumper ( embroidered red), brown silk hat, grey stockings, brown shoes. Native of ( stated) Tunstall. Was employed as servant through Corporation Women's Hostel, Manchester, on 28th ult., and absconded 10th inst. Said she had been employed as hand painter at a pottery, and would like to obtain work in service at Blackpool. Inf. to Supt. Proffitt, Hurst Brook. 22.— Manchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences ( worthless cheque).— James B. Boland, b. 1883 to 1885, 5ft. 10in., c. ruddy, h. fair, clean shaven, sharp features ; dress, brown suit ( double breasted), trilby or pot hat, brown shoes, smart appearance. Called on loser, 24th ult., and asked him to cash cheque for above amount on Lloyd's Bank, Victoria Street, London, Branch, made out on piece of * plain paper, which was subsequently returned marked No account. Was entrusted with the dog to find a purchaser for it. Sold tho dog and failed to pay proceeds to loser. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Manchester. 24.- Manchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 9 10s. by false pretences, 23rd ult.— Cecil George Cooper, b. 1894, 5ft. 7 or 8in., slim build, h. brown, clean shaven ; dress, black suit ( far worn), green mixture waistcoat, striped soft collar, black tie, pot hat or cap. Entered Post Office having previously made out an official receipt for £ 9 10s., placed Excise stamp on receipt before tendering same and forged signature of principal. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Manchester. 25 - Old Trafford ( Co.).— For stealing at Prest- wich, 13th inst., pair lady's knickers.— A Man, b. 1893 to 1899, 5ft. 7 or 8in., stiff build, c. dk., h. dk. brown, clean shaven ; dress, dk. grey suit, It. grey cap, collar, tie, boots, respectable appear- ance. x Inf. to Supt. Yates, Old Trafford. 26.— Old Trafford ( Co.).— For stealing motor car ( recovered), 2nd May. 1923.— Henry Hickling, b. 1858, 5ft. 5in., medium build, c. sallow, h. and moustache grey, slightly deaf, very plausible ; dress, dk. suit, trilby hat. collar, tie, boots. Was entrusted with the car to sell, and divide profit with loser. Sold the car, received the money, and absconded. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Yates, Old Trafford. 27.— St. Helens ( Boro.).— For obtaining £ 3 10s. by false pretences, 10th inst.— James Williams, b. l888to 1893, 5ft. 8 or 9in., stout build, c. and h. dk.; dress, navy blue trousers and vest, It. print shirt, It. grey cap, boots.— Man, b. 1890 to 1895, 5ft. 6 or 7in. ; dress, dk. trousers and vest, It. shirt, It. trilby hat. Both respectable appearance. Represented they were laying oilcloth in all Walkers public houses and were allowed 1yd. in 10 for themselves. Produced a roll of oilcloth which they stated measured 11yds. ( false), and induced complainant to purchase it for £ 3 10s. The oilcloth was found to be 4Jyds. short. . Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., St. Helens. NORFOLK. 28.— North Walsham ( Co.).— For obtaining 30s., £ 2 and 30s. by false pretences at Stalham and Horning, 23rd, 27th and 28th ult. ; also for stealing ( bailee) at Stalham, 28th ult., black overcoat with white stripes, slip pockets ; post- man's overcoat, no buttons ; pair men's boots, size 9, 1. heel cut down ; 2 knives and 2 forks.— William Patrick Kenny, b. 1891, 5ft. 7in., c. pale, h. dk. brown, e. grey, tattooed on forearms ; dress, sports coat, grey flannel trousers, It. cap, white and blue striped shirt, shoes ( worn at heels). An upholsterer ; native of Wisbech. Told loser he could obtain short lengths of upholstering material cheaply, and was handed 30s. for that purpose. Later obtained a further sum of 30s. from same person, saying he wished to visit his wife at Nottingham, who had met with an accident ( false), and £ 2 from his employer on same pretext. Absconded afterwards, taking with him above property. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Carter, North Walsham. NORTHUMBERLAND . 29.— Blyth ( Co.).— W. Hall, Case No. 19, 10- 8- 23, is identical with William John Raine, C. R. O. No. 1789- 22, b. 1891, 5ft. 6Jin., c. fresh, h. brown, e. grey, scar rt. cheek, cut scar rt. chin. A clerk ; native of Stamfordham. Pre. con. of fraud at GATESHEAD, LANCHESTER ( William John Raine) and EDINBURGH ( John William Raine). Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Hutchison, Blyth. OXFORDSHIRE. .30.— Henley- on- Thames ( Co.).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 27th ult.— A Man who gave name of F. W. Wootton, b. about 1893, 5ft. 5in., slim build, h. dk., e. brown ; dress, grey coat and cardigan, breeches, white muffler, cap with large peak, canvas leggings with dk. buttons, appearance of a stableman. On 26th ult. called on loser and asked for lodgings, stated he was a stable hand and had accompanied a man from France with a valuable racehorse. Following day asked loser if she had any Treasury notes as he had only foreign money and wished to send a telegram to France. On being refused said he would go to bank and get his money exchanged, returned and said the bank would have to send to Reading to exchange the notes and endeavoured Friday, September 14, 1923. No. 4897- 19, b. 1901, 5ft. 3£ in., c. fresh, h. dk. brown, e. brown ( cast 1.). A carter ; native of Manchester. Pre. con. of larceny, cycle- stealing and a minor offence at HANLEY, HALESOWEN, FENTON and STOKE- ON- TRENT. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Adlem, Uttoxeter. SURREY. 32.- Walton - on- Thames ( Co.).— For house- breaking at Oatlands Park, 13th inst.— Two Men : 1st, b. about 1898, 5ft. 5 or 6in., c. fresh. Jewish appearance ; dress, smart brown sttit, dk. grey trilby hat with black band.— 2nd, b. about 1898, 5ft. 5 or 6in., c. fresh, Jewish appearance ; dress, navy blue suit, brown trilby hat with black band. A dk. blue car ( number unknown) was waiting in vicinity in which was a man, b. 1873 to 1878, stout build, c. sallow, clean shaven ; dress ( believed) dk. grey suit and trilby hat. Swindon ( Co.).— For stealing property, Case No. 38, 30- 7- 23.- Edward Alfred Johnson, b. 1898, 5ft., c. pale, h. black ( wavy), small dk. moustache ( may now be clean shaven), Roman nose, walks badly and suffers with rheumatism ; dress, brown suit, grey trilby hat ( black band), soft collar, green and black tie ; had also a grey suit and blue raincoat. Accompanied by his wife, Ethel Johnson ( not wanted, b. 1901, 5ft. 2in., h. dk. brown ( bobbed), lost 4th rt. finger at 2nd joint ; dress, nigger brown costume, brown stockings, brown hat ( trimmed with pink satin), brown suede gloves). Inf. to Supt. Brooks, Swindon. YORKSHIRE. 34.— Hull ( City).— James Pearson Case No. 15, 23- 7- 23, is identical with James Pearson, C. R. O. No. 1651- 05, Case No. 219, Supplememt A ( Vol. X.), b. 1879, 5ft. 8in., c. fresh, h. It, brown, e. grey, nose inclined to rt., mole 1. nostril,. Native of Cleckheaton. ( sunburnt), clean shaven ; dress, blue raincoat with belt, pink socks, brogue shoes. Stole the bicycle from outside an office and sold it to a man in street for 25s. Was paid 3s. on account and asked purchaser to forward the balance to Harry Tomson at a Hull address, which proved to be false. Inf. to the C. C., York. O. No. 821- 10, b. 1890, 5ft. 5in., c. fresh, h. brown, e. grey. An artist; native of Paris. Pre. con. of wounding with intent, shopbreaking, attempted burglary, attempted shopbreaking, oyolestealing and minor offences in CITY OF LONDON ( Harry Clay) and on C, I), E, H, K and T. Was organizing Secretary of International Service Bureau, 27, Chancery- lane ( L.), and was assisted by John Meech, C. R. O. No. 1745- 08, who is shown on the Company's bill heads as general secretary. About 3 months ago loser was introduced to De Vene, who persuaded him to allow De Vene the use of his office. Loser con- sented, and following day Meech was introduced as a person with vast organizing experience. Advertisements were inserted in Daily Telegraph for secretaries for provincial branches. Three were eventually appointed, each of whom paid £ 50 deposit to Leach, who handed the amount (£ 150) to De Vene, who absconded following day, taking the typewriter with him, and accompanied by' Meech. De Vene also opened account at Barclay's Bank, Holborn, and obtained cheque book of 25 cheques. Three of these have been passed by De Vene— one for £ 39 10s., drawn in name of P. Ramsey, passed through Munster & Leinster Bank, Dublin, and two others for £ 12 17s. and £ 2, in name of Ramsey, passed through Hibernian Bank, Dublin. Inf. to C. R. O. These men were seen tampering with lock of grocer's shop during lunch time. When assistant returned he found the door had been forced with blunt instrument and above amount taken from tills. A grocer ; native of Gateshead. Was a sergeant in R. E. ( T. F.) and acted as Secretary and Treasurer of N. C. O.' s. mess. Was given a cheque for above amount with which to pay accounts. These, however, are still unpaid and Hogg missing since 25th ult. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Gateshead. HERTFORDSHIRE. 147.— Watford ( Co.).— For obtaining 25s. by false pretences, 1st inst.— R. H. Snook, b. 1895 to 1897, about 5ft. 7in., c., h. and e. dk. ; dress, dk. mixture suit and cap, soft collar, tie, brown boots, carried overcoat. Native of Dorsetshire. Called at tobacconist's shop, made small purchase anil asked assistant if he knew any Dorsetshire- people. SOMERSETSHIRE. 150.— Taunton ( Co.).— For stealing 2 bicycles ( recovered), 8th and 10th inst.— James Penfold, alias James Adams and James Frankam, b. 1888 to 1893, 5ft. 3 or 4in., slim build, e. fresh, h. It., brown toothbrush moustache, scars bridge of nose, 1. eye slightly discoloured; dress, It. suit, greenish trilby hat with black band, collar, tie, boots, wore discharge badge and silver watch chain, may be wearing medal ribbons. Calls on cycle agents, hires bicycle and fails to return same. Attends show grounds, low class public houses, etc., with crown and anchor board, and stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Chapman, Taunton. and stealing £ 3 2s., 13th inst.— A Man, b. 1878 to 1883, 5ft. 8in., stout build, c. red ( sunburnt), large nose, clean shaven, good address ; dress, dk. suit, believed dk. grey trilby hat, boots, respectable appearance. WORCESTERSHIRE . 152.- Evesham ( Co.).— For obtaining by false pretences, 13th inst., dk. brown horse, age about 30 yrs., 14 hands, short docked, hog mane, broken knees, rather large hoofs, several bald places on bedy ; ordinary driving bridle with straight bar bit, leather collar with dk. leather lining, nickel plated hames ( one ring broken off and fastened at bottom with chain) and small cart pad ( brass studded across top).— Joe Irons ( probably false), b. 1883 to 1888, 5ft. 4 or 5in., stiff build, c. fresh, h. dk., wore gold coloured rings, gold watch chain, spade ace guinea attached; dress, blue suit, black trilby hat, brown boots. Stated he had purchased an orchard of plums, and wanted the pony, etc., to take them to market. Agreed to purchase it for £ 9 and pay on I4th inst., but has not since been seen. Accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), b. about 1898, slim build, c. sallow, h. auburn; dress, blue costume, black high- legged boots, smart appearance. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Pegg, Evesham. Told loser he was advertising agent for the Catholic Year Book, that he was soliciting orders for advertisements in same, and received above amount in prepayment for an advertisement. Warrant issued.
