LANCASHIRE. 87- Bury ( Co.).- For stealing ( trick) 10s., 22nd inst.— A Man, b. 1882 to 1887, 5ft. 8 or 9in„ medium build, c. fresh, believed clean shaven ; dress, dk. suit, collar and tie, respectable appear- ance. Called at a shop, asked for 10s. note for 10s. worth of silver, stating that it would answer for a postal order. He placed some silver on the counter and was handed 10s. note, afterwards putting what appeared to be a Treasury note in * a stamped addressed envelope. Loser counted the silver, found there was only 9s., and drew the man's attention to it. The latter counted the silver, took possession of it, stated they had made a mistake at the hotel and would go and see about it, at the same time leaving the envelope behind. The envelope was afterwards found to contain a piece of blank paper. Inf. to Acting Supt. McHardy, Bury. 88.— Liverpool ( City).— For housebreaking ( wdndow insecure) and stealing, 20th or 21st ult., number of letters, silver cigar case ( J. H. D. thereon) and 2 cheque books, each containing 25 cheques, on Union Bank of Manchester, 45, Castle Street, Liverpool.— William Merrill, alias William Sidley, C. R. O. No. 24- 19, Case No. 206, Supplement A ( Vol. VIII.), b. 1895, - 5ft. 4Jin., medium build, c. sallow, h. auburn, e. grey, scar rt. eyebrow and cheek ; sometimes well dressed. C., Liverpool. 89.— Old Trafford ( Co.).— For stealing ( trick) £ 1 at Patricroft, 16th inst.— A Woman, young, 5ft. 4in., slim build, c. fresh, h. dk. brown, thin features ; dress, black coat and skirt, brown hat. Intercepted boy who was returning from pawnshop with £ 1 2s. 9d. and told him he had left 2d. on shop counter. Boy gave her the money and she added 2d. and appeared to wrap the whole in paper, but it was afterwards found she had ab- stracted the Treasury note. Inf. to Supt. Yates, Old Trafford. 90.— Old Trafford ( Co.).— For stealing ( trick) 8 or 9 cwt. scrap lead at Prestwich, 11- 7- 22.— Two Men : 1st, b. about 1882, 5ft. 6 or 7in. , slender build ; wore soft collar and tie, cap, shabbily dressed.— 2nd, b. about 1882, 5ft. 6 or 7in., c. ruddy ; shabbily dressed. In possession of dk. bay horse, about 15 hands ; and flat top cart, with two rubber tyred wheels. Called upon loser, who had a quantity of scrap lead for sale, and stated they had called for the lead. The lead was then handed to them, loser believing they had been sent by a firm with whom he had entered into negotiations for its sale. Inf. to Supt, Yates, Old Trafford. 91.— Old Trafford ( Co.).— For stealing pair lady's patent shoes, size 6, strap across and up frort, from a stall at Pendlebury, 15th inst.- A Woman, b. 1892, 5ft. 5in., slender build, c. fresh : dress, dk. costume and hat. Inf. to Supt. Yates, Old Trafford. 92.— Southport ( Boro.).— For obtaining 20s. by false pretences, 14th ult.— Charles George Ward, b. about 1877, 5ft. 10in., c. fair, clean shaven ; dross, dk. suit, bowlor hat, collar, tie, boots. Stated he was agent for Newcastle Benzol Co., Ltd., of Newcastle, obtained order and above amount for 10 gallons benzol which has not been delivered. Identical with C. G. Ward, Case 146, 20- 9- 22. Warrant issued. Inf. to tho C. C., Southport. STAFFORDSHIRE. 93.— Smethwick ( Co.).— For obtaining £ 1 by false pretences, 4th ult.— Mrs. Ward, b. about 1877, 5ft. 5in., slimjbuild, c. sallow, Jh. and e. dk. ; dross, navy blue skirt, black serge costumejjacket, black apron, black hat ( turned up at front). Called on loser, who is treasurer for an adult school, told her she was a member and asked for above to enable her niece to pay rent. Was given above amount for which she signed receipt. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Needham, Smethwick. WILTSHIRE. 94.— Chippenham ( Co.).— For obtaining 5s. 6d. by false pretences.— J. Phillips, b. 1892 to 1894. 5ft. 3 or 4in., c., h. and e. dk., clean shaven ; dross, brown jacket, grey trousers, It. trilby hat with black band, boots. May be wearing 2 medal:;. Calls at houses in villages canvassing order.-; for photo enlargements and persuades people to give him order. Usually obtains above amount and gives a receipt with Discharged Soldiers Studio. High Street, Bristol, in indelible ink thereon. Appears identical with James Phillips, Case No. 88, 29- 5- 22. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Wells, Chippenham. YORKSHIRE ( NORTH RIDING). 95.— Scarborough ( Boro.).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences, 6th inst.— Claude Henry Hammond, aliases Dick Kirton, Claude Hammond, Henry Hammond, Reginald Wilson, Reginald Claude Hall, Reggie Hall, Reginald Smallwood, R. G. Hall and Jack Ingham or Ingram, C. R. O. No. 48- 22, Case No. 65, 13- 9- 22, b. 1892, 5ft. 3in., slim build, e. fresh, h. black, e. blue, clean shaven, lisps slightly ; dress, blue serge suit, soft collar, black knitted tie with yellow stripes, grey velour hat or cap, brown brogue shoes, gentlemanly appearance. A shop assistant; native of Rugby. Pre. con. of fraud and minor offences at RUGBY, NUNEATON, NORTHAMPTON, COVENTRY, FLEETWOOD, SOUTHPORT ( Claude Henry Hammond), LANCASTER ( Reginald Water- house) and on Y. Met loser and offered him work in motor works provided he joined Union. Loser accepted and handed over above amount. Arranged to call on loser 9th inst. but did not do so till 13th inst, when he left a letter addressed Harry Burton Esq., Austin Works, Assembly Dept., North field Works, Birmingham, which made reference to a previous interview, signed R. Shilling. A further letter purporting to come from Royal Hotel and signed R. C. Hall was received, but no such person stayed at the hotel. Is also suspected of stealing ( lodgings) gent's fawn raincoat, double breasted, belt with leather buckle, strap and button each sleeve, plaid lining, sleeves been turned down about Jin., Montagues Burton on tab and pocket. Made friendship with a single young woman and obtained the above amount on pretence that he was owner of property which was being disposed of. Frequents good, class hotels and riverside resorts and travels the country in motor cars. Warrant issued. Inf. to C. R. O. LANARKSHIRE. 88.— Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 34.— James Fyvie McFarlane, b. about 1898,5ft. 5 or 6in., slim build, c. fresh, h. fair or brown, eyelids slightly inflamed, clean shaven ; dress, navy blue suit, soft felt or velour hat. Native of Glasgow. Has a brother in the employment of Coats' Central Agency at Vienna and it is thought he may endeavour to get there. Sheriff's warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Glasgow.
