HORWOOD, The Commissioner of Police of the Al etropolis. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. BEDFORDSHIRE. 1.— Luton ( Boro.).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— J. Manners, b. about 1886, 5ft. ' 8" or 9in., stout build, e. dk., full face, clean shaven, of quiet and reserved disposition ; dress, dk. overcoat, grey suit, bowler hat, black boots. Took lodgings, 7th ult., stating that he was sent by a firm, also that he did a little business on his own. After a few days he received a large number of letters; Since he absconded, i7th ult., a large number of complaints have been received showing that he had advertised poultry for sale, and had received several sums of money. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Luton. B UCKING H AMSHIRE. 2.— Aylesbury ( Co.).— For obtaining 3 van loads scrap iron by false pretences, 12th inst.— Two Men : lst, gave the name of William Coval, b. 1893 to 1896, 5ft. 6 or 7in., c. dk., h. dk. ( curly), slight dk. moustache, bad teeth ; dress, dk. clothes, cap, collar and tie, black boots with patent toecaps.— 2nd,- gave the name of George Davis, b. about 1901, 5ft. 6 to 8in., c. and h. dk., clean shaven, Jewish appearance ; dress, grey suit ( greasy), It. trilby hat, patent leather shoes. Coval called on a firm of printers, enquired if they had any scrap iron for sale, and stated he had a large contract in hand to supply a firm in the Midlands and could afford to pay a good price. Represented he was con- nected with a firm at Reading, also that he had stores at Bedford. A deal was arranged at £ 5 per ton and 3 loads were taken away by a local con- tractor who had been hired by Coval. Instead of putting the iron on rail as was first arranged the contractor was told to take it to a local firm of marine store dealers, by whom it was purchased. Accompanied by two women ( not wanted) : lst, gave the name of Mary Coval, b. 1899 ( looks younger), 5ft., stout build, c. fresh, h. it. brown ( frizzy in front), e. blue, long eyelashes, round face ; dr6ss, blue . check skirt, brown plaid coat, large blue felt hat trimmed with gold braid, brown high heeled boots, carried a hawker's basket; appearance of a gipsy.— 2nd, gave the name of Florence Davis, b. 1895 or 1896, 5ft. 7in., thin build, c. pale, h. dk. brown, thin features, false teeth, well spoken; dress, grey service mack- intosh, small white fur hat trimmed with blue material, black boots ; carried a baby, age about 14 mos. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Wootton, Aylesbury. DERBYSHIRE. 3.— Bakewell ( Co.).— For stealing £ 1 from a dwellinghouse at Pilsley, 6th inst.— John Webster, alias John Parks, C. R. O. No. 14886- 20, b. 1898, 5ft. 7£ in., medium build, c. fresh, h. brown, e. grey ( 1. imperfect), flesh lump back of 1. ear, slight limp rt. leg, turns feet out when walking ; dress, navy blue suit, dk. overcoat, bluish coloured tie, black trilby hat, dk. khaki muffler, black boots with rubber soles and heels. DORSETSHIRE. 4.— Sherborne ( Co.).— For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered) at Gillingham, 25th ult.— Frank Rodgers ( probably false), b. 1893 to 1895,, 5ft. 8 or 9in., h. brown ( long), Devonshire accent, dirty appearance ; dress, brown coat and vest tweed ribbed breeches, black leggings, soft collar, brown cap, brown rainproof overcoat. Hired the bicycle, stated he required it for a week, and sold same at Wincanton, 28th ult. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Barrett, Sherborne. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 5.— Gowerton ( Co.).— For stealing ( lodgings) a gent's dk. grey overcoat, 10th inst.— A Man, who gave the name of Henry Trelby, alias Tilsbury, b. about 1886, 5ft. 5in., slight build, c. fair, h. It. brown ( very long in front), e. brown, clean shaven ; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, grey striped grousers, white butterfly collar, blue tie, It. cap, dk. brown stockings, black boots. Native of ( says) Gloucester. Obtained lodgings, 9th inst., and stated that he was employed as foreman by the Post Oftice Authorities to put up telephone poles in the district. Borrowed the overcoat on the pretext of going to see his men at Killay, and failed to return. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Smith, Gowerton. LANCASHIRE. 0.— Accrington ( Boro.).— For ( 1) stealing ( lodgings) 2 cotton bed sheets, and ( 2) obtaining a woollen jumper by false pretences.— Christina Kennedy, b. 1897, 5ft. 5in., slender build, h. dk. brown, e. brown, Irish accent, smart appearance. ( 1) Took the bed sheets from her lodgings, pledged them in loser's name, and when questioned on the matter stated she had taken them to be fancy stitched. ( 2) Called at a draper's shop and stated that she wanted a woollen jumper for her landlady. Was given the jumper but her story was afterwards found to be false. Inf. to the C. C., Accrington. 7.— Ashton- under- Lyne ( Boro.).— For obtaining by fraud ( worthless cheque), 9th inst., 18ct. 2- stone diamond engagement ring.— A Man, who gave the name of S. Shawcross, b. about 1886, 5ft. Sin., well built, c. fresh, h. dk. brown, clean shaven ; dress, dk. overcoat, collar and tie, bowler hat. Entered a jeweller's shop, purchased the above ring, and tendered in payment a cheque for £ 18 10s., on the National Provincial and Union Bank of England, Manchester, signed S. Shawcross, which was subsequently returned marked No Account. Warrant issued. Inf. to the C. C., Ashton- under- Lyne. SHROPSHIRE. 8.— Oswestry ( Co.).— For embezzling £ 46 ( 4 £ 10 notes, Nos. 30 over V 77820, 69 over K 31285, 40 over V 12368, 35 over V 34806, and 6 £ 1 Treasury notes).— Dick Smith, alias Phillips, b. 1896, 5ft. 7in., proportionate build, h. dk. brown, e. dk., clean shaven, slouching gait, turns feet out, several teeth missing rt. upper jaw ; dress, blue serge suit, dk. grey cap, old muffler, black boots. Visited a local horse sale and was handed a cheque by loser to cash at the bank, and absconded. Frequents horse sales and fairs. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Taylor, Oswestry. YORKSHIRE ( NORTH RIDING). 9.— Guisborough ( Co.).— For false pretences ( food and lodgings) and larceny at Redcar, between 7th and 10th inst.- Edward James Quigley, alias McIntyre, b. 1895, 5ft. 8 or 9in., sbm build, c. ruddy, h. dk. brown, e. brown, tattooed back of rt. hand and forearms; dress, brown suit, white collar, black knitted tie, coloured silk neckerchief, grey cap, brown boots. Took lodgings, 7th inst., stating that he was employed by the North Eastern Railway Coy., as engine cleaner, and had been transferred from Middlesbrough. Asked occupier if she could find accommodation for 5 other men, and left on 10th inst., on the pretence of going to Middlesbrough to bring the other lodgers, and failed to return. The sum of 15s., which was placed on the mantelpiece, was subsequently found to be missing. Warrant issued. Inf. to Supt. Thornton, Guisborough. SUFFOLK ( EAST). 39.— Ipswich ( Boro.).— 12th inst., Gent's Club Tourist Roadster bicycle, black enamelled, lined gold bronze ( double lines), 26in. frame, rubber DORSETSHIRE. 41.-— Wareham ( Co.).— 10th inst., in the sea at Swanage.— The body of a newly born Female Child, 1 to 3 days old, h. sandy ; nude. Had been in the sea about 2 days. The following verdict was returned at the inquest: " Death due to fracture of the base of the skull; no evidence forthcoming to show whether injuries were accidentally or wilfully caused."
