CONFIDENTIAL, Supplement B. THE POLICE GAZETTE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23RD, 1914. No. 43, VOL. 1. Convicts on Licence, persons under Police Supervision and others whose apprehensions are sought for failing to comply with the requirements of the Prevention of Grimes Acts, and the Prisoners ( Temporary Discharge for 111 Health) Act, 1913. Those bearing names marked thus * are Licence Holders, and should produce their licences. The first condition of a licence is that the holder shall preserve it and produce it when called upon by a Magistrate or Police Officer; but it should be distinctly understood that a Licence Holder is not required to carry his licence upon him. Before preferring a charge of failing to produce a licence, it should be ascertained what the- defaulter has to say, vide Sec. 5, Sub- sec. 1, 27 & 28 Vict., cap. 47, which requires a Licence Holder to produce his licence or show some reasonable excuse why he does not produce the same. N. B.— When a circulation is cancelled, the printed matter relating to the person in question might be ruled through in red ink, without defacing the portrait. A hawker; native of London. Sentenced at C. L. S., 4.1.1910, to 3| yrs.' pen. and 2 yrs.' supn. for housebreaking. Liberated ( after undergoing impt. for a minor offence), 5.10.1914, into Met. Pol. Dist. Officer proving identity, P. S. Clarke, C. I. D., W. Failed to report on liberation from Pentonville Prison. Effects entry to dwelling- houses by forcing win- dows; frequents fairs, etc., with confederates and picks pockets; has also cons, of larceny ( trick)— " ringing the changes." Known to police of CITY OF LONDON and on G, K, L, T and W DIVNS., MET. POL. Information to above Office. 372. Bradford ( City). * GOLDSMITH, ALFRED, C. R. O. No. 1866- 03, age 38, ht. 5ft. 2in., c. fresh, h. brown ( going bald), e. brown, scar on nose, woman, snake, etc., rt., ship, anchor, etc., 1. forearm, 2nd and 3rd rt. fingers deformed. A shoe- hand; native of Leicester. Sentenced at Leicester Assizes, 7.6.1912, to 3 yrs.' pen. for warehousebreaking. Liberated on licence, 11.9.1914, to Bradford. A troublesome thief and warehousebreaker. Known to police at LEICESTER and MAR- KET HARBOROUGH. Warrant issued by Bradford. May be dealt with where found. 373. Criminal Record Office. * HARDING, CHARLES HENRY, alias Henry Forbes Harding, C. R. O. No. 987- 14, age 37, ht. 5ft. 6in., c. fresh, li. brown ( turning grey, bald top), e. brown, scar on nose and rt. of mouth. A clerk; native of London. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 1.7.1909, to 7 yrs.' pen. for forgery and larceny. Liberated on licence, 14.8.1914, into Met. Pol. Dist., which ex- pires 19.7.1916 ( 19 days' appellant). Officer proving service of notice, P. S. Lloyd, C. R. O. Failed to report at Albany St. Pol. Sta., S Divn., Met. Pol., 14.10.1914. Employed as clerk at a large hotel he stole cheques from a cheque- book, forged the signature of the secretary, etc., and paid the cheque into his own account. Fleeced women with whom, although married, he went through the ceremony of matrimony, describing himself as a bachelor. Known to police at MANCHESTER and on G DIVN., MET. POL. No. 56- 10, age 30, ht. 5ft. 6iin., c. fresh, h. dk. brown, e. brown, scar rt. of neck, flowers, bracelet, etc., rt., pierced heart, etc., 1. forearm, cross back 1. hand, ring 3rd rt. and 2nd 1. fingers. A brass caster; native of Birmingham. Sentenced at Birmingham Sess., 4.3.1912, to 3 yrs.' pen. and 3 yrs.' supn. for larceny. Liberated on licence, 4.6.1914, to Birmingham. Failed to notify his change of address, 5.10.1914. Pre. con. of larceny, warehousebreaking and minor offences. Known to police at ASTON, BIRMINGHAM and HANDSWORTH. May be dealt with where found. 375. Prison Commission for Scotland. * SCOTT, BERNARD, C. R. O. No. 1931- 02, age 29, ht. 5ft. l^ in., c. fresh, h. It. brown, e. blue, scar 1. of forehead, part ring 3rd and 4th 1. fingers, weak- minded. A labourer; native of Preston. Sentenced at Preston Sess., 22.5.1912, to 3 yrs.' pen. for shopbreaking. Liberated on licence, 4.9.1914, to Cardiff. Failed to report at Haddington on liberation from a sentence of 20 days' impt. at Haddington Pol. Ct., 15.9.1914, for begging. Gains access to jewellers' shops by scaling walls at the rear and breaking windows; buries property until he deems it safe to fetch it. Known to police at PRESTON, BLACKBURN HADDINGTON and WIGAN. May be dealt with where found. 376. Criminal Record Office. * SMITH, JAMES, aliases, James Wright Bur- gess, James Burgess and James Wright, C. R. O. No. 238- 12, age 43, ht. 5ft. llfin., c. fresh, h. brown ( turning grey), e. grey, scar on forehead and rt. wrist. A telegraphist; native of Dumfries. Sentenced at C C. C., 14.5.1912, to 3 yrs.' pen. for burglary. Liberated on licence, 14.8.1914, into Met. Pol. Dist. Officer proving identity, P. C. Savage, 814S. Officer proving service of notice, Insp. Wilford, G. A bricklayer; native of Shepper- ton. Sentenced at Bucks. Assizes, 15.1.1912, to 3 yrs.' pen. for fraud. Liberated on licenoe, 16.4.1914, into Met. Pol. Dist. Officer proving service of notice, P. S. Juniper, 22T. Failed to report at Sunbury Pol. Sta., T Divn., Met. Pol., 16.10.1914. Known to police at FAREHAM, READING, SLOUGH and on H and X DIVNS., MET. POL.
