POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SEIUES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1913. VOL. XXX., No. 3118. X. A. U communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all. cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaran- teed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by thr chief officer if police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer ef not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen pro- perty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be re- ceived not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) ioill be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should b « prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— Criminal Record Office- For failing to comply with the conditions of his licence which has been revoked.— GEORGE GRAY, alias PRATLEY, Office No. S. 59798, age 22, height 5 ft. 4f ins., complexion fresh, hair auburn, eyes blue, scar right temple. Sentenced, Middlesex Sessions, 7th February, 1911, to 3 years' detention in a Borstal Institution for possessing housebreaking implements by night. Released on licence 14th May, 1913, to the care of the Borstal Association. If arrested a telegram or telephonic communication should be forwarded to the Gover- nor, Holloway Prison, who will send an escort for him. Not to be arrested after the 24th August, 1914. Warrant issued. 4.— R Divisionm— For officebreaking and causing grievous bodily harm.— TWO MEN : lst, age 25 to 30, height 6 ft.; 2nd, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 ins., both complexion, hair and moustache dark, and wearing dark clothes. b.— R Division.— For rape, 20th Septem- ber last.— PERCY FARRELL, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair dark brown, slight moustache brown, eyes' dark; dress, blue serge suit, dark neckerchief and cap, lace boots; may be wearing a green mix- ture suit. A grocer's assistant; native of Plum- stead. Supposed in company of gipsies in Kent. 6.— T Division.— For stealing ( servant) £ 20, 27th September last.— JOHN BORRET, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., com- plexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes brown, stoops, slightly bow legged; dress, dark grey jacket, dark trousers and cap, lace boots. Warrant issued. 7.— Y Division.— For stealing ( servant"), lst inst., £ 42 10s., 1 £ 5 note and 4 postal orders ( 10s., 2s., and 2 for Is. 6d. each).— MORNINGTON BERTRAM, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) light, slight moustache dark; dress, dark lounge suit and cap, bow tie, lace boots. A barman ; native of Norwich. Is fond of betting and stated his intention of going abroad. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8. Bedford ( Borough).- For obtaining credit by fraud, 7th ult.— J. LUCAS AIRD, age 55, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion florid, hair ( bald on top) dark, clean shaven, one ear disfigured, red nose. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 23, 7th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Bedford. 9.— Luton ( Borough).— lor stealing a pair of new blankets.— C. SMITH, age about 25, height 5 ft. 2 ins., complexion fair, full round face, hair light brown, eyes brown ; dress, light suit and cap. Is accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, large mouth, pointed nose; dress, brown coat and skirt. CHESHIRE. 10. - Birkenhead ( County^.— For stealing a gold watch and chain from his lodgings.— JOHN DEFFLEY, alias BENNETT and PEPPER, age 26, height 5 ft. 6i ins., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, cut scars point of left eye- brow, front of left forearm, both elbows and right thumb, mole right elbow, 2 moles right side of breast, round burn scar above right knee, Kate, female tattooed on one forearm ; dress, dark tweed check suit, pink tie, light cap. An ironworker; native of Wolverhampton. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Farnworth, County Hall, Birkenhead. 11.— Dukinfield ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a lady's silver watch, chased case, flowered dial; 1 brown frieze overcoat, usual pockets; and £ 1 3s.; and obtaining food and lodg- ings by false pretences between lst and 4th inst. — JAMES HILL, age 50 to 53, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair turn- ing grey ( bald on top) and moustache brown, fe- male right forearm, front upper teeth missing; dress, black coat and vest, dark striped trousers, green and white striped tie, dark peak cap. Stated he was a fitter and was commencing work at Hooley Hill, Lancashire, and was a native of Bootle. Left behind him a metal watch, Walter Camp, Jeweller, Bradford on dial. Is identical with MAN described in Case No. 35, 10th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Richardson, Dukinfield. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 12.— Dumfries ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst., at Kirkconnel, a blue jacket suit with broad black stripe.— EDWARD CHARLETON RICH, age about 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion pale, hair light and very long, clean shaven, long thin face, walks sharply; dress, blue jacket suit, soft gery hat, lace boots. A tramping electrician; supposed a native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Dumfriea. ESSEX. 13." Romford ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 5th inst., a bicycle, 26- in. frame, painted French grey, lined out blue, 28- in. wheels, new Palmer tyres, flat plated handle bars, B. S. A. fittings, Brooks saddle, 2 Bowden brakes, block chain, rubber pedals. Lucas bell, tool- bag attached. — A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaven, piece of plaster left side of face; wearing a dark grey lounge suit and cap, boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hailstone, Romford. 14.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing. 5th inst., a portmanteau containing a quantity of clothing ( part recovered).— CHARLES GRAY, age about 22, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion scurvy. A deserter from the lst East Lancashire Regiment; wearing dark suit, black wrap round neck, green soft liat. Had in his possession a black enamelled bicycle, wheels lined out gold, transfer on bar, " Howe, Colchester," Michelin tyres, back pedal brake, tool bag, G. Elliott, So- braon Barracks, thereon. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 16.— Cheltenham { County).— For stealing, 25th September last, a bicycle ( recovered).— HAROLD SEAGE, age 24, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., rather stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair brown, clean shaven; dress, brown suit with stripes, grey cap. A bricklayer's labourer or general labourer; native of Chittlehampton, Devonshire. Believed making his way to Ply- mouth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 17.— Staple Hill { County).— For warehouse" breaking and stealing a black morning coat and yest; 1 pair grey tweed trouserr and a new military shirt.— THOMAS JOHN WEBB, age 19, height 5 ft. 2 ins., good build, complexion pasty, hair light brown, eyes grey; wearing the stolen cloth- ing which is too large for him. A native of Nail- and, Somerset. Is an absentee from the Special Reserve of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He left his military uniform behind. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. 18.— Bristol { City).— For embezzling 14s. and 7s. and other sums.— THOMAS RUSHOLME, age 38, height 4 ft. 10 ins. to 5 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache gin- ger, tattooed with a snake and man on back of right arm, knock- kneed; wearing a dark grey over- coat, blue serge jacket ( much worn), black Army leggings, boots, and brownish grey cap. A native of Manchester. Usually stays at common lodg- ing houses, Church Army and Salvation Army Homes. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 19.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 10th inst., a lady's gold keyless watch, case cracked across centre; 1 do., gold face; 1 lady's gold guard, long, short thick links; 1 do., very fine links; 1 lady's oval filigree brooch, glass back and front, hair inside; 1 lady's 18- ct. gold ring, set 1 diamond; 1 lady's mourning ring, set pearls; 1 lady's gold do., with flat piece of gold, initial thereon; 1 oval locket, fluted; 1 lady's gold 2- strand chain bangle, fastens with round hasp, tassel attached ; 1 lady's gold safety- pin brooch, set amethyst and pearls; 1 lady's gold brooch, made from a pair of mother- o'- pearl cuff links.— REGINALD EBBESWORTH, age 33, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, thin face, clean shaven, large nose, bad teeth, eyes blue; dress, navy blue suit, light grey overcoat, bowler hat, hlack boots and grey suede gloves; is well educated; a native of Southampton. Is a photographer and had a camera in his posses- sion. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2 5s.— WILLIAM THOMAS BREWER, Office No. 987- 02, age 47, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; scar centre of fore- head, Emma Perier, flowers and Sarah right arm, cross, L. E. J. C. front left forearm, I. W. web left thumb; dress, dark suit, grey cap. Probably ac- companied by a woman ( arrest not sought) ; also a boy age 9 years. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HER TFORDSHIRE. 21.— Watford ( County).— For stealing £ 2 12s. 6d.— WALTER ROBERT POWELL, alio* BROWN, Office No. 1832- 07 ( see Case No. 17, 7th inst.), age 22, height 5 ft. 3| ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, point of nose slightly turned up, scar under right eye, brown mole outside right upper arm; dress, brown suit, large brown blanket coat, brown soft hat, brown boots ( American toes). Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Watford. ISLE OF WIGHT. 22.— Newport ( Coumty).— For embezzling JE7 6s. 6d., at Yentnor, 4th ult.— PERCY EDWARD SHEPARD, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache ( waxed at ends) dark, prominent teeth; usually wears dark or grey lounge suit. An ironmonger's manager. Absconded 6th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Newport, I. of W. KENT. 23.— Tunhridge Wells ( Borough).- For obtaining by false pretences, 6th inst., a B. S. A. bicycle, black enamelled, upturned handle bars, black grips, transfer on head and back mudguard, Philpot, Tunbridge Wells, 2 roller lever brakes, 28- in. wheels, plated rims, rustless spokes, free wheel, rubber pedals, Hermetic A zig- zag covers, portion of old back- pedalling brake attached to crank, one tube of frame has been bent; in good condition.— A MAN, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., com- plexion very fair, moustache very light, gentle- manly appearance; wearing a long fawn mackin- tosh, blue trousers, bowler hat, tie. He obtained the bicycle by representing that he was employed by a neighbouring tradesman. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Tunbridge Wells. LANOASHIRE. 24.— Chorley ( County).— For embezzlement, 8th inst.— THOMAS LANGTON, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark; dress, blue jacket and vest, brown trousers and cap, lace boots. A van driver. May seek em- ployment as a creeler. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Whittaker, Chorley. 25.— Liverpool yCity).— For stealing, 6th inst. ( by trick), a lady's long black coney seal fur coat, low collar, fastens with 2 buttons covered with same material, lined silk, 1 pocket inside.— TWO MEN : lst, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, left eye artificial; dress, dark brown suit, soft hat; 2nd, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 ins., hair and moustache dark; dress, blue suit, overcoat, hard hat; appear- ance of racing men; and A WOMAN, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 7 ins., slight build, complexion pale ( powdered); dress, black and white check skirt, yellow blouse, black velvet toque trimmed red feather; may be wearing the stol'en coat. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 26 .— Manchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 160 by false pretences, 6th ult,— JOHN BRAD- SHAW, age 36 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., good build, inclined to be corpulent, com- plexion fresh, round face, receding forehead, Roman nose, ears prominent, close- set mouth, hair ( inclined to sandy) light brown, slightly bald, eyes blue or hazel, thick moustache, light sandy, waxed at ends, short fingers; well dressed. A business transfer agent; native of Bolton. May be found at cheap boarding houses. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 21.— Southport ( Borough).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered), 16th ult.— JOHN SOUTH- ALL, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven, Prince of Wales' feathers and J. S. tattooed on right forearm ; dress, dark green jacket suit, grey cap, striped composi- tion collar, lace boots. A doorman. Stated he was a native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. 28.— Southport ( Borough).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered), 15th ult.— A man who gave the name of WILLIAM ALFRED BOWYER, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, round features, good teeth; dressed in sailor's uniform. Stated he was a wireless telegraph operator; be- lieved a native of Birmingham. Information to the Chief Constable, Southport. LINCOLNSHIRE. 29.— Spalding ( County)— For stealing ( bail « e) a Rover bicycle, chocolate colour, North Road dropped handle bars, number on seat pillar be- lieved 177253.— CHARLES MACLEAN, age 45, height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, hair dark, clean shaven, no teeth; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, dark fancy vest, heavy nailed boots ( cut from toes to lace holes). May be found working on farms. Speaks of a boat he has patented in Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burton, Spalding. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 30.— Newport ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2 15s., 30th ult.— CHARLES McGUMMERY, age 44, height 5 ft. 9 ins., high cheek bones, rather prominent nose; dress, pepper and salt colour suit, light cap, white collar with blue stripes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Newport. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 31.— K ottering \( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a lady's costume ( recovered), at East Farndon, on or about 29th March last— ARTHUR RICHARDS, age 26 or 27, height 5 ft. 6 ine., slight build, complexion pale, hair and eyes dark, clean shaven; dress, dark grey jacket, slate- colour breeches, red jersey, grey cap, black leather leg- gings, and lace boots, or dark grey suit. A groom. Supposed a native of Bedford. Photograph can be seen on application. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hooper, Kettering. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 32.— Newark ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst., a horse ( recovered).— A MAN, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins,, full round features, high cheek bones, hair dark, clean shaven; dress, dark jacket, vest, cap and muffler, heavy nailed boots; Irish accent. Said he was a slaughterman ; also that he had been a soldier. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sills, Newark. STAFFORDSHIRE. 38. — Lichfield ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings and money, between the 28th ult., and 7th inst., by falsely representing that he was em- ployed by the Lichfield Gas Co., and stealing from his lodgings a cheque book on the National Pro- vincial Bank of England, Ltd., Nos. L. 74,909 to 74,920 inclusive, on Lichfield Branch; the first 2 cheques, Nos. 74,909 and 74,910, have been used by the owner; also a lady's English lever watch, 18- ct., gold face and hands, chased at back, is very old and valuable, small gold key attached, ruby one side and small white stone the other; 1 lady's gold chain, old- fashioned, 18ct., very fins links with long, thin bar links at intervals, some have been broken and pieced with black cotton; 1 lady's half- hoop 18- ct. gold ring, set diamond and sapphire, other stones missing.— ERNEST THOMPSON ( supposed false), age about 36, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., sallow face, black hair and waxed moustache, eyes dark, and of good address; wearing black felt hat, mauve tie with pin, dark grey overcoat, grey coat with cuffs turned up, and vest to match, blue trousers with stripes, lace boot*. Stated he had come from Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Lichfield. 34 — Stoke- on- Trent ( Borough).— For stealing £ 3 10s.— MAUD HARRISON, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, navy blue costume, hat trimmed blue silk, bunch of violets each side, lace boots. A native of Winkhill, Staffs. Recently came from Leeds and stated she had been employed as a wait- ress. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Stoke- on- Trent. SUSSEX ( East). 36.— Brighton ( Borough)'.— For obtaining by false pretences, 18th August last, a motor cycle ( re- covered).— R. F. SIMPSON ( correct' name HENRY CHARLES BAIRD), age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 ins. to 6 ft., sliglit build, thin features, pointed nose, hair inclined to light, clean shaven; dress, greenish grey suit, brown plush Alpine hat. Late of Mare Hill, Pulborough. He is also wanted for obtaining a Clyno motor cycle, Reg. No. L. H. 5859, grey enamelled, lined green, name- plate on front, mudguards, Turpin, 29, Pres- ton Road, Brighton, thereon, Klaxon hooter fitted on front fork, blue painted sidecar, coach- built, attached, high back, Hutchinson tyres fitted to cycle and car. Is also believed to have an India motor cycle in his possession. Usually accom- panied by his brother ( not wanted), age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, round face; dress, brown suit and cap. Warrant issued. V. pattern, numbers on magnetos, 487727, 487730, 487739, 487764. 37 - Y Division. — 7th inst., ( unattended) a motor cycle, Douglas 1912 model, Index No. M. He made his appear- ance in Rome about the end of October, 1912, under the name of John Napier Lang, represented himself as being of a Roman Catholic family in England aud a B. A. of Oxford University and had come to Rome to enter the Rcdemptorist Order of the Roman Catholic Church, but on account of conscientious difficulties desired to sever his connection with the Church of Rome and adopt the Protestant faith. He was sent to Edinburgh to enter the New College of the United Free Church of Scotland as a student for the Mission field, where he was well received by a leading layman of the United Free Church, but on discovering that enquiries were on foot as to the truth of his statements he left the New College, and ap- proached the Dignatories of the Roman Catholic Church. He was sent through a Monastery in Scotland to the Roman Catholic Scots' College at Rome, and it was discovered that he was an im- poster and he was turned out. Pie then proceeded to Paris and thence to Algiers where he introduced himself under the name of J. W. L. Cornforth to the Missionary of the United Free Church of Scotland there, returned to England where he re- presented himself as being Dr. Samuel Angus, nephew of Sir Alexander Simpson, of Edinburgh, and under this pretence is believed t o have imposed upon several clergymen and others in various parts of the country- Last heard of on 9th inst., when he called at the Left Luggage Office of a railway station at Birmingham for two suit cases which he had deposited earlier 111 the day.
