XXX., No. 3114. 1. ill communications for insi rtion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all cuimnunica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOH OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen prop' rt y will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the articli in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offcnces will be inserted at a cost of 85. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaran- teed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7 Announcements concerning stolen property must, be guaranteed by an officer nn/ less rnnk Iran 1 » i sprrtnr nr tiwtdsiqmis therein. 3. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen pro- perty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, al once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the. next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be re- ccired not lati r than noon on Wedncsday, and for the Tuesday edition not lahr than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by o covering letter. 12. HELLMAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., stout build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, face disfigured, flat nose, Devonshire accent; dress, dark pilot jacket, drab- colour trousers. A navvy; stays at common lodging or low beer houses. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. BUCKING HA MS HIRE. 5.— High Wycombe ( County).— For ob- taining credit by fraud.— W. J. MELROSE, see Case No. 11, 24th inst., since identified as WIL- LIAM CAMPBELL, alias MAXWELL, Office No. 517- 03, age 32, height 5 ft. 9£ ins., complexion fresh, hair auburn ( clean shaven), eyes blue; burn scar inside right forearm, tip left forefinger, prom- inent nose, walks rather badly; dress, greyish- green jacket suit, dark soft felt hat. A native of Jarrow. He represented himself as an actor manager to a travelling theatrical company under Nat. Travers, took a local hall, obtained credit for printing, ctc., and after paying account with worthless cheques, absconded; is in possession of a number of cheques on the Capital & Counties Bank ( Marlow Branch). Has been convicted at Wallsend, Widnes, Bradford, Wednesbury, South Shields, Jarrow, Durham, Castle Eden, Newcastle, Hartlepool and Leicester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. G — Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining credit by fraud, 4th inst.— JULIAN PINDER, age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., slight build, hair dark, clean shaven, large eyes; dress, dark suit, black soft round hat. Attends race meetings and stays at first- class hotels. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE, " i - Hazel Grove ( County).— ARNOLD TILLER, described in Case No. 14, 24th inst., has been identified as ARNOLD TILLER, Office No. 939- 13, age 22, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; scar right eyebrow, left ring linger. Has been convicted at Manches- ter and Stockport. He had permission to sleep in some farm buildings and in the early morning stole the clothing, etc.; tramps the country calling at farm- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 8.- Oakmere ( County).— For stealing a pair of riding boots at Sandiway, 26th inst.— A MAN age about 27, height 5 ft. 5 ins., hair dark, clean shaven; dress, dark grey suit and cap, necker- chief, and probably wearing the stolen boots. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oajtmere, near Northwich. CORNWALL. 9.— Truro ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) £ 60, 18th inst.— WILLIAM ALEXANDER ROBERTS ( Eurasian), age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion very dark, rather long features, protruding chin, hair dark or black, small moustache black, speaks slowly and deliber- ately with a peculiar accent, walks erect, large feet, long fingers, rather deaf ; dress, dark lounge suit. A clerk and typist; supposed born at Ox- ford. Is said to be fond of horse racing and betting. May now be accompanied by his wife who has been a nurse and travelled foreign coun- tries. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sparks, Truro. ESSEX. 10.— E/ Jsuing ( County).— For carnal knowledge. — JOHN SMITH, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion and hair dark; dress, dark clothes, large cap. A low horse dealer. Supposed travelling the country gathering old clothes and lumber. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, Epping. 11 .— Southend ( County).— For obtaining food by false pretences, between 8th and 18th inst.— THORA KENTUCKY, alias ROWLAND, RAN- DALL, NICHOLLS, McQUEEN & McCOYNE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair light; dress, grey coat, black collar and cuffs, grey skirt, band of grey ribbon around hair, no hat. Represented that she was employed as a clerk by a local firm. Warrant issued. 12.— Southend ( County).— For embezzling- 2s. 10d., 21st inst.— PERCY CHARTER, age 22, height 5 ft. 11 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaven, eyes grey; dress, brown suit, no hat. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 13.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing jewellery and money from his lodgings on the 15th August last.— WILLIAM SMITH, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, moustache brown; wearing dark grey striped suit, brown cap, white muffler, lace boots. He took lodgings, stating he was a mason and had come from Swansea to work for a builder. He asked the landlady to be allowed to go upstairs and shortly afterwards left the house on the pre tence of purchasing some stationery. Warrant issued. 1L— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing ( trick) a motor cycle, 24th August last.— JAMES or JOHN JAMES, alias JAMES PUGH, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., slight build, hair light, thin face, clean shaven, sunken jaws, false teeth, slightly round shouldered, an excessive cigarette smoker; dress, brown suit ( American make) or grey Norfolk suit, tie, usually fastens with a ring, tweed cap. A native of Bristol. May be found in company of prostitutes. Warrant issued. JOHN BELLAMY, age 37, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair dark brown, slight moustache dirk, may now be clean shaven; dress, dark or light grey suit, bowler hat, of smart appearance. A carpenter; native of Exeter. Sentenced, Kingston- on- Thames Quarter Sessions, 31st December, 1907, to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Information to Supt. Hall, Kingsclere. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— J. COLE, alias E. J. AUSTIN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, moustache dark, twisted at ends, and which he has the habit of twisting when talk- ing, very small feet; dressed in grey suit, light overcoat, wears a soft felt or white straw hat CT cap. He advertised in the Feathered World, Cage Buds Exchange and Mart, and other weekly dealers' papers, offering ferrets for sale, and ask- ing for a remittance on account. Warrant issued. ISLE OF ELY. 21.— March ( County).- For stealing ( bailee), J 6th inst., 2 sets of upper artificial teeth ( 1 five other three); 1 Kruger shilling; 1 50- cent piece and 1 5- cent do. — TURNER, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion sallow, hair and moustache ( small piece shaved off under nose) black; dress, black jacket and trousers, navy blue vest, light cap, new brown boots. Stated he v/ as a buyer of antique furniture. May be accom- panied by a man, short, bow- legged, carrying a bag with 2 straps. Warrant issued. 22. — March ( County).— For stealing £ 5 from his lodgings, 21st inst.— JOHN WALLACE, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion vlark, rather long nose, hair ( thin on top) black, inclined to wavy, clean shaven, eyes grey; dress, saavy blue lounge suit, brown mixture cap, brown < M>. fiatent leather goloshed boots with tan- colour uppers. He took lodgings, stating he was a chauf- feur to two Government Survey officials. Left behind a white metal pencil case with pink stone in top; 1 pair lady's new kid gloves, " A.- 25- 6, made in Belgium," on one; a gun metal label, " 1/ 11S/ H" thereon, " made in Belgium, 3314, 210, 1231," on other, both have patent fasteners, stamped " D. A. G., C. F. & Co." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bunn, March. KENT. 23.— Ash ford ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered).— LEWIS WOODGATE, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion and hair dark, thick lips; wearing dark suit. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Ashford. 24.— Dover ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 4 by worthless cheque on Capital & Counties Bank, Kensington Branch, 17th inst.— A man who gave the name of G. ASTON, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 9 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, sharp eyes, thin features; dress, dark striped suit, black hard felt bat. Carried an umbrella. Is identical with E. CASTLE, alias WALL, WOOD, WEBB and SUTTON, Case No. 5, 30th May last. Warrant issued. 25.— Dover ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences.— A woman who gave the name of DAWES, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair auburn; dress, black costume, black straw hat trimmed black rib- bon, lace boots. Had with her a child, age about 3, well nourished ; dressed in light clothes. Stated her husband was an engineer in the East Kent coalfields. Warrant issued. LANARKSHIRE. 26 — Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 119 4s. 6d.— DAVID TULLIS McLEOD, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion ruddy, hair light, clean shaven, nose believed to have been broken and a prominent scar across one cheek; dress, navy blue suit, hard felt hat, shoes. A wholesale stationer's clerk and collector. Had in his possession a brown leather kit bag containing a grey tweed knicker suit, and a pair of grey stockings with red band at top. Absconded 18th inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. MURDER. 27 — Manchester ( City).— For murder, 25th inst.— JA^ VIES BANAHAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey, curly in front) and moustache sandy, marks on face; dress, dark tweed jacket ( recently washed), cord trousers, light cap and muffler. A native of Longford. May seek employment as a navvy, bricklayer's labourer or farm labourer, and be found sleeping out or staying at common lodging houses. Is a member of the Beaumaris Engineers. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. NOTTINGHA MS HIRE. 28.— Mansfield ( County).- For obtaining by a worthless cheque, 20th inst., an 18- ct. gold Eng- lish lever watch, and a 9- ct. open curb double albert, seal attached.— WILLIAM HAMILTON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion rather dark, hair brown; dress, brown suit, green- ish rainproof overcoat, soft felt hat. He opened an account at the United Counties' Bank, Mans- field, with a cheque for £ 39 9s. 7d. on the Oxford Branch Bank of Barclay & Co., Ltd., which was returned marked " No effects," and obtained a cheque book containing cheques, Nos. C. 019321 to 019380, with one of which he paid for the watch and chain and will no doubt attempt to pass the other cheques upon tradespeople and hotel keepers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. SHROPSHIRE. 29.— Wem ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a bay mare.— JOHN EDWIN PRICE, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., square build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, round face, clean shaven; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, cloth breeches, dark green soft hat, black leggings and brown boots. A groom or horsebreaker. May be found at horse fairs or at posting and livery stables. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Francis, Wem. STAFFORDSHIRE. SO— Lichfield ( County).— For neglecting his children at Brownhills, 26th ult.— CHARLES MASON, age 50, height 5 ft. 9^ ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes grey, ship on chest, cross flags left forearm, stars and stripes right; usually wears old clothes, muffler and cap. A miner; native of Brownhills, Walsall. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Lichfield. 31.— StOke- Onrent ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 16th inst., 3 pairs of boots.— THOMAS MANN, age about 32, height 5 It. 10 ins., complexion sallow, hair black, slight mous- tache dark; dress, blue serge suit, black bowler hat, lace boots, Derby pattern, patent leather toes, Cuban heels. A grooer's manager or splea- man. Is said to be known at Wolverhampton and Northampton. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hanley, Stoke- on- Trent. SURREY. 32.— Chertsey ( County).— For abandoning her child, 10th inst.— VIOLET ELLEN WOOL- LARD, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fair, hair light. May be found at casual wards. Is accompanied by her husband ( not wanted). Had with them a brown mailcart. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mears, Chertsey. 33.— Dorking ( County).— For failing to ap- pear to a summons for neglecting his children.— WILLIAM BOYLE, age 35, height 5 ft. 11 ins., slight build, round shoulders, complexion sallow, hair light brown, slight moustache light, tattooed on arms and chest. A carman or labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Coleman, Dorking. 3Guildford ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment.— ERNEST HEBBAlil), age 32. height 6 ft., complexion pale, hair dark, usually clean shaven, eyes brown. A carman. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildford. SUSSEX ( East). 35.— Portslade ( County).— For stealing 2 gold watches and chains ( recovered), and 2 append- ages, viz., a George III. sovereign and a silver pencil case, T. M. on bottom.— PAUL BAN- KART, alias G. K. MARTIN, age 15£, look* about 20, height 6 ft. 2 ins., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue; dress, blue serge suit, soft feit hat. Carried a small hand bag and had in his possession a leather wallet, Bankard Bars House, Forgate Street, Chester, thereon. He en- gaged a taxi and drove to several golf clubs in this district, entered the dressing rooms and took the above property. He stays at first- class hotels as G. K. M AKT1N, of Manton, Rutland. See case No. 70, 17th inst. A native of Leicester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Suter, Portslade. SUSSEX ( West). 36.— Arundel ( Borough).— For stealing from lodgings, a silver watch ( recovered). PAYNE ( supposed false), age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 ins., hair and short moustache turning grey, with seve- ral days' growth of beard, eyes brown, thin face, stoops slightly when walking; very well educated; dress, grey jacket and trousers, uark fancy waist- coat with red stripe, lighc. Iiiown silk knot tie, and a soft felt hat; addicted to drink. He visits low- class beer houses, states he is visiting schools in the district, and that he has been a journalist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wakefield, Arundel. YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 37.— Hull ( City).— For embezzling £ 42.— THOMAS LINLEY, age 40, ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, complexion fair, rather sunburnt, hair light brown, short mous- tache light, eyes blue, several small scars left side of neck, 1 front upper tooth decayed; dress, dark striped suit, grey cap, lace boots. An office porter; native of Sheffield. Is a pensioned sergeant of the East Yorkshire Regiment. Absconded 21st inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Ss.— Guishorough ( Cotinly).— For stealing, 18th inst., a green Popular bicycle, 24- in. frame, Popular transfer on head and back mudguard, made by F. An applicant, in response to the advertisement, gave full particulars of himself, his family, and then- residence in Germany. Nothing further was heard from the advertiser, but applicant's parents in due course notified him that they had, as requested, sent 500 marks to Kew, Surrey. Office.— Special attention is called to this man whose arrest is sought on warrant at Slough, Rucks, for obtaining on 24th inst,. by a worthless cheque drawn on Grindlay's Bank, Parliament Street, London, a dark brown Irish mare, age 8 years, 15.1 hands, hog mane, docked tail, bad wind- galls on both forelegs, recently clipped, except legs; also a Windover Ralli car, to seat four, painted imitation basket sides, remainder green, lined yellow, black harness brass mounts, monogram ( not known) on of Fauldruff, and the cases similar to this, which have occurred in London and provincial towns, are undoubtedly the work of this man. The letters and telegrams in these cases have been received at accommodation addresses ( mostly small shops where letters may be addressed upon the payment of a small fee), and a female has called for them. May be accompanied by a tall man, slight build, heavy dark moustache, similarly dressed. Is identical with WILLIAM GIBSON, alias COLLINS, etc., described in Case 53, 17th inst., who is also wanted at Godalming and Bex- hill.
