POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1913. VOL. XXX., No. 3048. X. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension it sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. t. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8a. per portrait, and engravings of stolen properly at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or % tnusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6j. thould be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the - requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7 Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer uf not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all eases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should 6 « prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. May endeavour to obtain employment at sea. A native of Croydon. Warrant issued. 7.— X Division.— For stealing, 29th January last, from his lodgings, a gold chain, locket and ring.— HENRY CECIL HANSFORD, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion sallow, hair black, brushed back; dress, light grey jacket suit and cap, black overcoat, with fur collar and cuffs. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8.— Luton ( BoroughI.— For stealing, 3rd inst., from a hotel, 2 gold bracelets ( 1 9- ct. curb with padlock and safety chain; 1 braided chain, snap fastening, with safety chain which is broken and tied with piece of white thread) ; 1 lady's 15- ct. half- hunter watch, gold case, attached to a gold brooch, shamrock leaf pattern. " Carrington " sup- posed inside case; 1 heavy gold signet ring, 9- ct., with " M. D. W." on shield; and about 10s.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, hair and moustache very dark; dress, brown overcoat, dark suit, black bowler hat, grey spats. He left behind a 16- inch brown leather Gladstone bag ( old), containing a blue jacket suit, copy of Answers, Bradshaw's Guide for January, 1913, with name, Mr. Dundonald, in pencil, written in- side, A. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Windsor ( Borough).— For stealing a costermonger's barrow, 16th December, 1912.— BENJAMIN REED, alias JOHN SMITH, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 ins., thin face, hollow cheeks, clean shaven, cast in one eye. A rag and bone gatherer. He hires a barrow, travels the country, then disposes of the barrow and returns to the Metropolitan Police district. Warrant issued. BUCKINGHA MS HI RE. \ 0.— High Wycombe ( County).— For steal- ing. 17th ult., llcwt. of potatoes ( recovered).— FRANK PRICE, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 ins., stout build, complexion fair, hair and heavy moustache very light brown, eyes blue; dress, greyish jacket suit, cap, muffler, black leggings with straps, heavy boots.— JOHN FREDERICK BOWLES, age 32 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache brown, eyes hazel, ex- tensive tattoo marks both arms; dress, long dark overcoat, cord trousers, cap, white muffler, heavy nailed boots. Vegetable and fruit dealers; natives of Marlow, which place they left 20th ult., with a small brown pony and cart ( may have " W " or " Frank Price, Marlow," painted thereon). Warrant issued. Newport Pagnell ( County).- For obtaining a quantity of turnips and potatoes by false pretences on 1st and 8th January last re- spectively.— HARRY HUMPHRIES, ' alias THOMPSON, age 35, height 5ft. 2* iAs., good build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown eyes brown, left foot slightly deformed, " Jane Cooper" left forearm; wearing grey coat and cap. He visits towns, rents small sheds, represents himself as a wholesale and retail fruit, pea and potato salesman, obtains goods, disposes of same and ab- sconds. Previously convicted at Bedford, Cam- bridge and Chesterfield. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Web' ster ( with a confederate) took a furnished cottar at Lacey Green, opened an account at Princes Risborough Bank with £ 25 on 25th ult,, called upon tradesmen, ordered goods, in payment ten- dered cheques for more than the amounts of purchase and received the balance; the cheques have been returned marked " refer to drawer" the Bank deposit having been withdrawn. Pearson, Crewe. 14. — Macclesfield ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 5th or 6th inst., a black mack- intosh, white lining, chain tab, " Randol Swan, Holly Bank," inside; 1 black and white silk necker- chief; 1 dark Cardigan jacket; 1 silver pin, horse- shoe pattern; 1 do. horse's foot with whip en- twined ; 2 wooden pipes ; 1 leather tobacco pouch; 1 meerschaum cigar holder, amber mouthpiece, in case.— JOHN LEWIS HALL, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) and slight moustache brown, lump or cyst on top of left eyelid, glides both, slovenly gait; dress, blue pilot jacket, white moleskin trousers, blue muffler with white spots, brown cap, clogs. A labourer or navvy; supposed a native of Glossop. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ennion, County Police, Macclesfield. 15.— Stockport ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 5 6s. 5d.— GEORGE HARVEY, age 57, height • 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., stout build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown; dress, dark morning coat and vest, grey striped trousers, hard felt hat. A clothier's manager; of good address. Ab- sconded 18tli ult. Warrant issued. 16.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing a bank book, forging withdrawal order and obtain- ing £ 20 by false pretences on 24th ult.— THOMAS WILD, alias WILLIAM GRAHAM, age 29, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven, eyes hazel; wearing light suit, fawn- colour rain- coat. May seek employment as motor driver or barman. Has been convicted of larceny several times. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Stockport. CUMBERLAND. 1".— Whitehaven ( County).— For office- breaking at Lamplugh, 21st or 22nd ult.— A MAN, age 37, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaven, large dimple in chin, slouching gait; wearing old dark clothing. Has served in the Army. A native of Workington. Information to Supt. Hogg, Whitehaven. DURHAM. 18 — South Shields ( Borough).— For em- bezzling and stealing £ 16 10s. 7d.— ALFRED ROBINSON, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., slight build, prominent nose and features, hair inclined to ginger, clean shaven ; dress, dark grey jacket suit, brown check cap, black tie with flowers thereon, lace boots. A painter and paperhanger, native of Wallsend, but recently employed as a barman. Is fond of billiards. Stated his inten- tion of proceeding to Australia. Photograph can be seen on application. ESSEX. 19.— Chelmsford ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Union, 19th August, 1912.— ERNEST JOHN WARRICKER, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair brown, eyes grey. A labourer; native of Chelms- ford. May be found on public works. Warrant issued. 20.— Chelmsford ( County).— For deserting his wife and child, leaving them chargeable to the Union, 2nd January last.— ALFRED WIND LEY, age 31, height 5 ft. 10 ins., slight build, round shoulders, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, clean shaven, eyes grey, upper teeth project, scar back of right hand. A cowman. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 21.— Southend ( CountyV— For stealing, 8th inst., from his lodgings, £ 1.— PERCY CHARTER age about 21, height 5 ft. 11 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes sunken, clean shaven ; dress, blue serge suit, light check cap, green tie. A barman; native of Sandy, Beds. He was sentenced to 6 weeks' imprisonment at Biggleswade Petty Sessions about 3 years ago for stealing bicycle lamp. Absconded 8th inst., with a Swift bicycle which he hired and has not returned. Warrant issued. 22.— Southend ( County).— For receiving, 7th January last and on 24th ult., 3 pairs of shoes; 1 pair of boots; and 1 pair of slippers ( recovered). RICHARD HOWARD, age about 43, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, turning grey, moustache brown; wearing dark grey over- coat, hard felt hat. A decorator. Warrant issued. 23.— Southend ( County).— For embezzling 16s. lid., 27th ult.— HENRY CROMPTON, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes believed grey, addicted to drink; dress, dark suit and cap. A butcher's roundsman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Southend. GLAM ORG A N SHIRE. 24.— Neath ( County).— For stealing £ 18 from his lodgings at Aberavon, 8th inst.— WILLIAM BURY ADAMS, age 29, height 6 ft. k complexion sallow, hair black, parted in centre, clean shaven, high cheek bones; of military appearance; London accent; dress, old brown suit, trousers patched at seat, cap, laced boots. A drummer; served in Scots' Guards. Supposed to have returned to London 9th. inst. Warrant issued. 25.— Neath ( County).— For stealing, 11th inst., from his lodgings at Cwmgwrach, a silver watch, Swiss make, " S. Morgan, Cifngelly," inscribed on outside of inner case.— ERNEST" BELMORE, age about 20, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., light hair, parted in centre, complexion fresh, slight impedi- ment in speech; dress, green suit with dark stripes, bluish tie, white muffler, brown overcoat, light brown boots; wearing a double gold albert; had in his possession a lady's gold watch. He stated he had obtained work as an electrical engineer at Aberpergwm Colliery. He is also wanted at Aber- kenfig. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Evans, Neath. 26. — Cardiff ( City). — For conspiracy to defraud.— CECIL P. MARSDEN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark, eyes brown, clean shaven.— THOMAS ARMSTRONG, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair light, eyes grey, clean shaven ; appears to be in ill- health. Both speak with North Country accent. Believed natives of Manchester. These men, with a man named Joseph Dixon ( in custody), took a shop in the centre of this city in September last, in the name of C. P. Marsden, obtained large quantities of goods and failed to pay for same. Marsden absconded 3rd and Arm- strong on 5th inst. Believed to have carried on similar frauds elsewhere. Warrant issued. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 27.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing, Oth inst., about 400 American and Canadian dollars in gold, silver and notes; about 2,000 Austrian krones, com- prising 400 or 500 gold, 150 silver, the remainder mostly Crown bills; 70 Russian roubles in 5- rouble bills; 125 Norwegian kroners, gold, silver, and paper; some Finnish money; 60 lady's cheap gold dress rings; 24 metal watches.— ALBERT CLAES- SONS ( proper name believed LOUIS PAULUS JOSEPH VAN RAAIJ or RAAY), age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes brown; dress, green- ish tweed mixture overcoat, believed navy blue suit, bowler hat.— MARIE CLAESSONS, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion ruddy, hair light, eyes blue. Natives of Antwerp. The former speaks English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Belgian fluently; the latt'/ r English, Norwe- gian, Flemish and French. They were employed as managers of the Continental Hotel, Avonmouth, a boarding house for foreign emigrants and passen- gers en route to Canada, America, etc. Absconded 8th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 2S.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— J. OAKES, Case No. 93, 24th January last. Not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. HEREFORDSHIRE. 29.— Leominster ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 7s. 6d. by false pretences, 26th ult.— DAVIES, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, rather heavy moustache brown, one eye missing; dress, old grey suit and cap. A drover; attends fairs, auctions, and farm sales. Supposed a native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rooke, Leominster. 30. Hereford ( City).— For stealing ( servant) £ 8, 15th ult.— WILFRED COBBLEDICK, age 14, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., good build; dress, grey knicker suit, cycling stockings, dark overcoat, strap at back, Eton collar, pale green tie. Is believed to have gone to South Wales. Was em- ployed in a builder's office. Information to the Chief Constable, Hereford. KENT. 31.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— lor stealing ( bailee) between 27th December, 1912, and 3rd January, 1913, furniture ( recovered).— ALFRED JOHNSON, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 10 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache brown, points toes out when walking; usually wears dark clothes and hard felt hat. A jobbing bricklayer or general labourer; native of Rams- gate. He hired the articles 27th December, 1912, and disposed of same 2nd January, 1913, and after- wards left for London. May be found working on buildings or public works. Spoke of sailing for Canada on 25th inst. Was accompanied by his wife and daughter ( not wanted) ; wife, age about 40 years, height about 5 ft. 2 ins., slight build, complexion pale, very excitable and eccentric; daughter, age about 20, tall, stout build, com- plexion pale, full face. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Ramsgate. KING A RDINESHIRE. 32.— Stonehaven ( County).— For house breaking, 19th December, 1912.— ALFRED JACKSON ARMSTRONG, S. C. R. 773- 12, age 37, height 5 ft. 4| ins., rather stout build, erect bear- ing, hair dark, " Jeannie" right forearm, " Agnes Murray" and scroll left forearm, tattoo marks both legs, 3rd right finger amputated; dress, blue jacket, greenish trousers and cap, white muffler or sweater. A fireman; native of Dundee. He calls upon clergymen and ex- military men for assistance. May be accompanied by a woman, age 26, height 5 ft., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown. Warrant issued. 33.— Stonehaven ( County).— For stealing, lst ult., a bicycle ( recovered).— PETER TAYLOR, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven, be- lieved artificial teeth which do not appear to fit well; dress, navy blue jacket suit, greenish peak cap, light boots. A chauffeur; native of Rattray, Blairgowrie. May seek employment at cycle shops. Is also wanted in Lanarkshire, Perthshire, Ar- broath and Aberdeen. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 34.— Old Trafford ( County).- For stealing ( trick), 5th inst., a black leather handbag, contain- ing 3 lady's black leather purses; 2 Post Office Savings Bank Books; and £ 23.— TWO MEN: lst, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh ( blotchy), hair and eyes brown; dress, brown Norfolk suit, cap, tie; 2nd, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, dark suit, over- coat, black bowler hat, tie. Information to Supt. Keys, Old Trafford. 35.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st ult., £ 8.— MARY DUNN, age about 55, height 5 ft. 5| ins., complexion sallow, hair grey, full face, thick lips, addicted to drink; dress, dark blue skirt, black blouse, ankle- strap slippers; wears a green plaid shawl and spectacles. Late of Blackpool. May seek employment as cook or general servant. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. 36.— Oldham ( Borough).— For stealing, 27th or 28th ult., a grey mixture overcoat, black velvet collar, plain turn- back cuffs, single breasted ( nearly new); 1 pipe; 1 tobacco pouch ; 1 black cloth waist- coat ; 1 pair of dark grey trousers; 1 very fine curb double albert guard, imitation gold, red stone attached; 1 hair brush; 1 white comb; 1 razor ( Cowvan); 1 lady's metal watch; 1 box of adver- tising slides and some cards for a Leeds firm; and some letters addressed to Mr. Ernest Bottomley. A MAN who gave the name of VICTOR, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 ins., powerful build, long features, pointed chin, complexion tanned, hair grey, prom- inent teeth upper jaw; dress, light grey suit, FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1913.
