GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1913. VOL. XXX., No. 3040. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICI GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension it sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where, a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ( is. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is largi or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. thould be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Mvery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranf eed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ami if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or Ids immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. • 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should 6 « prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Warrant withdrawn. — WHITE, Case Not now wanted. 7 — Macclesfield ( County). — For stealing at Butley, 29th ult., a dark blue jacket, black lining, white sleeve lining, black bone buttons; 2 National Insurance cards, " Edward Murfin, Mill Hill Farm, Poynton," thereon; and 12 stamps in one pocket, " Weston, maker, Stockport," on tab; 1 pair dark blue trousers, lined three- quarter length, white, bottoms lined black, " Bulldog" on two buttons on front; 1 pair brown boots, size 8, " South African Field Boot" stamped inside.— JOSEPH WRIGHT, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., clean shaven, stammers, one right finger deformed, anchor left forearm, dots right fore- arm, military gait ; dress, cord vest and trousers, green muffler with red stripes, light cap, may be wearing the stolen jacket. DERBYSHIRE. 8.— Alfreton ( County).— For obtaining food and money bv false pretences.— HARRY FORD, alias SERVANT, LEE, WOOD, BELL, and WIL- SON, age 51, height 5 ft. 8 ins., very stout build, fat face, hair ( bald on top) grey, clean shaven, lump on one wrist; dress, dark jacket and vest, molesbin trousers, grey cap, muffler, Army boots. He takes lodgings, states he has obtained work at local works, induces one of the household to write to his sister asking that £ 5 of the £ 11, left with her, be sent him, then borrows money and ab- sconds. DEVONSHIRE. 9.— Torquay ( County).— For larceny ( hotel), 27th or 28th December, 1912.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., thin face, bald, clean shaven; of good address; dress, dark coat and vest, green and white spotted trousers, green soft hat. He travels the country, sings in public- houses and in the streets. May be found at common lodging houses. Information to Supt. Roberts, Torquay. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 10.— Dumfries ( County).— For stealing, 13th ult., 1 £ 1 note.— GEORGE CRAIG, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, scar on left forearm; farm servant; dress, grey jacket suit, cap, strong lace boots. Supposed native of Glasgow. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 11.— Dumfries ( County).— For obtaining by fraud, and stealing £ 8; 1 silver English lever watch, maker, " R. Christie, Dumfries, 6051," en- graved inside cases, " James Johnstone, 2, Mafe- king Place, Annan," silver curb albert with two threepenny- pieces, 1 cent and coin attached; 1 new twilled blue serge jacket suit, vent at back; 2 white linen shirts; 2 do. Derby collars; 1 cap; 1 black tie; 1 umbrella; 1 pair kid gloves; 1 pair light lace boots, between 29th October, 1912, and 25th ult., at Annan.— DAVID KING, alias HEG- GIE, Office No. 686- 1911, an ex- convict, age 55, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and moustache sandy, turning grey, eyes brown, scar left eyebrow, left cheek, left side and back of neck, ruptured both sides; wearing new twill blue serge jacket, grey or lavender tie, green felt hat, new lace boots, carried an umbrella. IS — Southend ( County).— — EDGAR, described in Case 12, 7th inst., has been identified as MARY EDGAR, alias FRASER, TIBBLE and GRAHAM, Office No. 32- 08, age 50, height 5 ft.: 2 moles left cheek. Coleman, Dorking. 81.— Woking ( County).— For housebreaking, 8th inst., and stealing a lady's gold ring, set with 3 diamonds and 3 sapphires; 1 9- ct. bracelet, thick curb, padlock fastening with safety chain; 1 gold 10- franc piece, date supposed 1863, mounted for a pendant; 1 silver brooch, true lovers' knot, small piece of blue enamel in centre; 1 small silver* whistle; 1 pair silver sleeve- links, faced with blue enamel; 1 pair of silver shoes ( ornaments), fast- ened together with a ring; 1 lady's open face key- less silver watch, glass missing, floral design on face, " S " over each hour; and a pair of blue serge trousers.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark; wearing green mixture overcoat, soft green hat. SUSSEX ( West.) 32.— Steyning ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 7s. 6d. by a worthless cheque for £ 3 drawn on the London County & Westminster Bank, Victoria Branch, London, S. W., No. A. T. 93364, dated 18th January, 1913, made payable to self, signed G. Wall, at Shoreham, 18th ult.— G. WALL, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache light brown, of military appearance; dress, grey overcoat, tight- fitting at waist, grey striped trousers, dark Alpine felt hat, glace boots. He also obtained a similar amount by a cheque, No. A. T. 93365. Both cheques have been returned marked " Refer to drawer." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowler, Steyning. 83.— Worthing ( County).— For obtaining, 6th inst., by worthless cheque, No. D. 86671, dated 4th February, 1913, on the National Provincial Bank of England, Savoy Court, London, W. C., £ 3 19s. 2d., and grocery and a ham, value £ 1 0s. lOd.— A. CHAPMAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion sallow, hair black, moustache dark, round plump face; dress, dark overcoat, soft felt hat. Had in his possession an old brown Gladstone bag. Is identical with MAN, Cases Nos. 9, 20th December, 1912, and 23, 3rd, and 31, 17th ults. He calls upon tradesmen and states he is residing at an address in the district, orders goods, and tenders in payment a cheque for more than the amount of purchase a, nd receives the balance; he also tendered a cheque, No. A. 372249, on the London & South Western Bank, Ltd., Cricklewood Branch, dated February 4th, 1913. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bridger, Worthing. as a detective officer and stated he had been on special work at Chatham. Warrant issued. 15.— Southend [ County).— For stealing a feather bed, etc.— JOHN WILLIAM THOMP- SON, alias BROWN, Office No. 104- 13, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; scar back of neck, over left eye- brow, top of right forefinger has been cut off; dress, grey suit and cap, wears a neckerchief. Had a pedlar's certificate in his possession and may be found selling cheap music. At one time had a music stool in the New Cut, Lambeth, and was known as Brownie. Warrant issued. FLINTSHIRE- lo.— Rhyl ( County).— For concealing, removing, or taking away £ 454 in bank notes and cash, re- presenting part of the proceeds of sale of his goods, etc., with a view of defeating his creditors.— FRANCIS THOMAS ROGERS, age 43 ( looks older), height about 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache ( cut short) sandy; dress, light brown suit. GLAMORGANSHIRE- 17.— Neath ( County).— For highway robbery at Nantybar, near Cymmer, 6th inst.— ALBERT or BERTIE STRONG, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., square shoulders, hair dark, clean shaven ; dress, dark green suit, Paisley muffler, probably new cap. A collier or colliery labourer; native of Penrhiwfer, Penygraig, from where he was com- mitted in September, 1903, to Ty Segur Reforma- tory Schools, Neath. Since his liberation in 1906 he has been convicted at Pontypridd, Porth, and Ystrad, of various offences.— WILLIAM JOHN ISAAC, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., h^ ir and slight moustache light; dress, dark suit, light muf- fler, dark cap. A collier or labourer; native of Blaenclydach or Penygraig. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Evans, County Police, Neath. 18 — Cardiff ( City).— DANIEL JONES, described in Case 16, 7th inst., is identical with WILLIAM SYDENHAM, Office No. 1382- 12. Warrant issued. 19 — Cardiff ( City).— For larceny.— AGNES CHAPMAN, age 15, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair auburn, very large eyes; dress, navy blue jacket and skirt, black hat, lace boots. A native of Cardiff. May be found in company of prostitutes or employed in seamen's boarding houses. Warrant issued. 20.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining food by false pretences.— FRED JONES, alias FRED CHARLES BROOKS ( correct name), age 22, height 5 ft. 6 ins., strong build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven, eyes blue; dress, dark suit, bowler hat, dark tie, heavy nailed boots. A labourer. He obtains food and lodgings by false- ly representing himself as a grocer's assistant. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Lyndhurst ( County).— For stealing £ 1 at Brockenhurst, 25th ult.— HARRY GEORGE COLE, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fair, hair ( long) light, clean shaven, eyes blue; dress, new navy blue suit, jacket cut low, gaunt- let sleeves, light tie, shoes, carried a fawn- colour rainproof coat. A hairdresser. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wakeford, Lyndhurst. KENT. 22.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing the property described in Case 29, 24th ult.— JOHN ORAM, alias WATSON and HOLMAN, Office No. 1823- 08, age 44, height 5 ft. 5£ ins., complexion dark, hair black, clean shaven, eyes brown ; wears rimless glasses, but may be wearing a false moustache; mole over left eyebrow, hairy rnole outer right forearm; dress, shabby grey plaid cycling suit, brown leggings. A clerk; native of Barnet. Information to Supt. Heard, Canterbury. 23.— Old Trafford ( County).— For embez- zling £ 49 7s., between 19th December, 1912, and 6th ult.— THOMAS KING, age 46, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown; wears glasses when reading, etc.; dress, dark overcoat, blue serge suit, hard felt hat. He was a referee for the Northern Rugby Football Union; also Secretary of the Swinton Rugby Foot- ball Club. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keys, Old Trafford. 24.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences, 18th ult.— JOHN WILSON, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., good build, complexion fresh, oval face, blotchy, high fore- head, prominent nose, thick lips, large chin, walks erect, takes quick steps, hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes ( small) blue; dress, dark jacket suit, dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, black hard or soft brown hat. On 13th December, 1912, he took apartments, advertised in local papers for a part- ner in a profitable business, thereby obtaining the above amount. Absconded 22nd ult., accompanied by his supposed wife ( not wanted). Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. is.- Ashton- under- Lyne ( Borough).— For shopbreaking, 17th or 18th ult., and stealing 20 watches, mostly silver; 78 rolled- gold guards, alberts and bracelets; 15 silk mufflers; 6 suits of clothes; 4 pairs of boots; 1 portmanteau, etc.; a portion of the jewellery, 2 pairs of boots and portmanteau ( recovered).— GEORGE BROOKS, alias SCHOFIELD, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, C. I. right forearm, scar inside right wrist, G. I. K. and anchor left forearm, wart back of neck; dress, black suit, red silk muffler, cap, lace boots.— WIL- LIAM BROOKS, alias SCHOFIELD, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, Y- shape scar centre of fore- head, scar left eyebrow, O right forearm, N. Trent ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 6th inst., a 9- ct. gold ring, chain pattern; 1 do. curb bracelet, gold locket, S. S. and In Memory of Dear Jim engraved thereon, attached; 1 gold half- hoop ring, set 5 amethysts; 1 15- ct. gold ring, snake pattern, set diamond and 2 garnets; 1 do., set ruby and dia- monds; 1 rolled- gold pendant; 1 gold- mounted fob chain, locket attached; 1 pair gold earrings, set diamonds; 1 oval gold brooch, set 3 diamonds in trefoil.— A. STUART MARSHALL, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion ruddy, hair and eyes dark; dress, brown mixture jacket and vest, dark blue tight- fitting trousers, tweed over- coat, black hard hat, " J. DURHAM. — Gateshead ( Borough).— For failing to surrender to her bail at Durham Quarter Sessions, charged with conspiracy to defraud.— SARAH THORNTON, a Jewess, age 21, height 4 ft. 10 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair black, eyes grey, advanced in pregnancy. A native of New- castle. She takes a small shop, orders goods to be paid for on delivery, but refuses to pay or allow the articles to be taken away. Is accompanied by her husband. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Gateshead. A native of Ryde, Isle of Wight.— FLORENCE LYDIA SWAINE, age 47, height 5 ft. 1 ins., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes brown; wear- ing long dark overcoat, large dark straw hat, trim- med black silk, grey motor veil. A native of Brixton, S. W. They engage apartments, usually for a month, then obtain supplies from tradesmen and abscond without paying for same. Were accompanied by their daughter, age 16, and son, age 14. Found in their possession: letters addressed A. Garrett, James Cherry, M. Garrett, A. Jallett, Jane Garrett, and Jane Goome.
