POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 3014. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the recjuisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for. the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. . All payments must be in advance, cither at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. THE EDITOR, New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. 9. 10 11. 12 SPECIAL NOTICE, £ 100 REWARD. MURDER. 1.— Whereas at about 9.20 a. m. Sunday, 3rd November, 1912, Miss Jean Milne was found mur- dered in the hall of her house at Elmsgrove, Broughty Ferry. She resided alone and was of eccentric habits, having few friends or visitors, frequently left home for long periods, and went to London, sometimes without intimating her in- tention of doing so; it is believed she last visited London on 9th April, 1912, and remained away till 2nd August, 1912, on which occasion she stayed at an hotel in the Strand. Was last seen alive on or about 14th October, 1912. A considerable quantity of valuable jewellery and money were found in the house. and on the deceased, but nothing appears to have been dis- turbed. About 10.30 a. m., on a day in the first or second week in October, A MAN of the following de- scription was seen in the private grounds at the back of the house, age 30 to 40, height about 6 ft., well set up, handsome and of gentlemanly appear- ance; wearing an evening suit, no hat. About 4.30 a. m., Wednesday, 16th October, 1912, A MAN of the following description was seen leaving the grounds of the house, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., approximate weight between 11 and 12 stones, complexion very pale, sharp features, slight moustache light, carried his head erect, and swung his arms when walking; dress, dark over- coat ( reached a little below knees), dark trousers; of gentlemanly appearance. Information to the Chief Constable, BurgE Police, Broughty Ferry, by whom the above re- ward will be paid to anyone giving such informa- tion as shall lead to the apprehension and convic- tion of the person or persons who committed the crime. A native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. 3 ,— E Division,— For obtaining £ 1 by worthless cheque.— J. E. COOKE, alias FRANK FRYER, Dr. FRYER, and BROOKS, Office No. 2603- 01 ( see Case 83, 25th October, 1912, and Il- lustrated Circular 64, Fig. 21); stoops slightly when walking, finger nails are bitten to the quick. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For stealing, 28th ult., 7 Coney seal fur sets ; 7 do. ties.— FREDERICK BRONSON, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 ins., good build, complexion fair, hair light, clean shaven, eyes blue; dress, grey jacket suit and cap, lace boots. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Reading { Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 4th inst., a heavy grey overcoat, lined flannel, 2 side pockets, ticket pockets and 2 inside pockets, grey bone buttons, button straps on wrists, and strap at back; 1 black vest and trou- sers; 1 old- fashioned white metal coffee- pot; 1 silver jug, chased, " To Dear Maggie, from Uncle and Aunt Scott," thereon.— CHARLES CLARK- SON ( supposed false), age about 46, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion sallow, clean shaven; dress, blue jacket and vest, grey trousers, blue overcoat. He took lodgings at a restaurant, 1st inst., stated he had just returned from abroad and was on his way to Southampton. Had in his possession a brown tin trunk with a label on top, " Las Palmas," thereon. Absconded on the 4th inst., carrying the tin trunk containing the stolen property. He left behind a bundle of letters which had been sealed with black sealing- wax and addressed to " J. F. Groom, Esq., 12, Abchurch Lane, King William BtlCKINGHA MS HI RE. 6.— Aylesbury { County).— For obtaining a horse, governess car and a set of black harness by a worthless cheque, 28th ult.— HAROLD J. BURGESS ( supposed false), age 28 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., rather stout build, complexion pale, hair and moustache brown; dress, brown suit, thick brown blanket overcoat, soft felt hat; may be wearing a new fawn- colour mackintosh, brown boots.— FREDERICK THOMPSON ( supposed false), age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion pale, hair light brown, moustache ( drooping) gin- ger or light; dress, brown mackintosh with cape, dark trousers, hard hat. CHESHIRE. 7.— Hazel Grove { County).— For child- stealing, 24th ult,, at Cheadle.— ROBERT MOORES, alias MORRIS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, thin features, hair light brown, eyes grey, square shoulders, walks erect; dress, brown jacket and vest, breeches, brown stockings and boots, red tie, soft fawn- colour hat, grey rainproof overcoat, " Goodall, Stockport," on tab. A master window- cleaner; native of Stockport. Had in his posses- sion a cubical sugar- box; dress- basket and an old bicycle. Description of child.— SAMUEL WAL- TER WILBY LOMAS, age 9, tall, slight build, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, blue jersey, blue or grey knickers, light tweed cap. Was ac- companied by a woman ( not wanted); age 33, height 5 ft. 7J ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes bluish grey; 2 front upper teeth mis- sing; dress, fawnish green costume, green straw hat, shoes with patent leather toes; had with her an old black trunk and brown square tin box; and a girl, age 8J, hair light brown ( 2 long curls) ; dress, blue frock, blue coat with red cuffs and collar. JAMES, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, com- plexion sallow, bloated, hair ( very long) black, clean shaven, peculiar deformity of right hand, 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( cuntinued)— scar right wrist, Yorkshire accent; wears glasses; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers and cap, white cuff worn as a front, no shirt, old boots; appearance of an actor or musician. Stated lie was a native of Sheffield. Represented that he was agent for a firm of photograph enlargers, Stock- port. Plays the piano in public- houses. Warrant issued. Green" tattooed on one leg, cut scar right cheek, suffering from a severe cold and may seek medical attention at hospitals.— JAMES HOL- LINSHEAD, age 53, height 5 ft. ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brovvn, eyes hazel. A silk piecer; native of Macclesfield. Botl: are addicted to drink. Information to the Chief Constable, Macciesneld. DENBIGHSHIRE. 11.— Wrexham ( County).— For failing to notify change of residence.— Licence holder RO- BERT TAYLOR, Office No. 1313- 12, age 42, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion dark, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, scar right back of head, hairy mole left side of neck, coal mark back right elbow joint, " R. A native of Branksome, Dorset. Supposed working in coal pits in Monmouthshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 18.— Dumfries '( County).— For stealing, 10th and 15th ult., respectively, an " Elswick " bicycle, No. 48631, green enamelled, 25- in. frame, raised handle bars, Brooks saddle, rat trap pedals, roller brakes, 26- in. wheels, Warwick tyres; an " Ariel" roadster bicycle, 26- in. truss frame, Brooks B. 55 saddle, coaster hub, rubber pedals, Michelin back tyre, Palmer front do., V- shaped tool- bag under saddle 26- in. wheels, aluminium rims, upturned handle- bars.— JAMES FRANCIS BAKER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion sal- low, hair ( thick and long) black, 2 front upper teeth stopped with gold, Scotch accent; dress, light grey shooting jacket, dark grey trousers, soft felt hat, shoes. Supposed a native of Musgrave, West- morland. Accompanied by his wife ( not wanted), medium ^ height and build, complexion fresh, hair brown; dress, fawn- colour costume, straw hat with blue ribbon. DURHAM. 14.— Stockton- on- Tees ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 7 th inst., a bay mare, 6 years, 14 hands 1 or 2 ins., clipped ( except legs), short tail, supposed patch of white hair on one ankle; a set of black harness with nickel mounts, imitation horse's head on blinkers; and a Durham car, black body, underwork yellow; 1 lamp; 1 red check woollen rug. initials " W. C." thereon; and a whalebone whip, " Alf Coleman" thereon. HARDY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 ins., stout build, complexion and hair dark, clean shaven, Yorkshire accent; dress, dark jacket suit, cap and overcoat. Represented himself as a com- mercial traveller and that he was going to work the district for about a month. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. James, Stockton- on- Tees. ESSEX. 15 — Grays '( County).— For obtaining £ 2 10s. bv false pretences at Stanford- le- Hope, 8th inst.—- EMILY MATTHEWS, age about 38, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion fair, hair light, one front upper tooth missing; dress, long black coat, green THE POLICE GAZETTE. skirt, white scarf, black sailor hat with black lib- fcon, carried a green Morocco purse. She calls upon clergymen, lay readers, - etc., states her hus- band has just died in hospital and requires money to remove the body; also states that he is heavily inbured. Warrant issued. IS— Southend ( County).— For non payment of £ 9 2s. maintenance arrears. — JAMES ADOLPH CANTOR, age 36, height 6 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue; of good ad- cli ess. A decorator. H.— Stanground ( County).— For stealing at Elton, 6th inst., 2 steers ( recovered).— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, hair dark, clean shaven; dress, blue serge suit, dark grey mixture cap, fawn- colour mackintosh, brown shoes. Was carry- ing an umbrella- stick, handle missing, silver mount. Information to Supt. Wilson, Stanground, Peter- borough. KENT. 18.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing. 1st inst., a dark brown mixture jacket suit, with green stripes; a youth's dark mixture suit; 1 pair lace boots, protectors in soles; 2 white woollen blankets with red stripes; 1 silver hunter watch, old- fashioned, maker, Benson, London.— REBECCA REBREER, age 59, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., hair ( turning grey) dark brown, fringe on forehead; dress, black cape and skirt, straw hat, trimmed with black bow at side. A native of Jersey. May seek employment as cook or housekeeper or at laun- dries. Warrant issued. 19 — Canterbury ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 2nd mst.— ROBERT MUNRO, alias MUNKS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes ( prominent) blue; dress, grey jacket suit, soft light tweed shoot- ing hat, grey waterproof coat, linen marked " R. Munks." Is fond of billiards, frequents hotels. Stated he was instructed by a firm of tobacco dealers, London, to obtain a shop for them to open as a branch establishment. Warrant issued. A rag gatherer. Warrant issued. [ FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1912. 24— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, a gold bangle.— PERCY DOUG- LAS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 8| ins., good build, complexion and hair dark, full face, clean shaven, shifty look in eyes, slouching gait; dress, navy blue suit, blue tie, grey soft mixture hat, lace shoes. Has been employed as a photographer's door- man. Is a reservist of the Royal Artillery. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 25.— Wellingborough ( County). — For stealing a l'reak cow ( recovered).— HERBERT ANDON, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion dark, hair dark brown; dress, shabby grey suit, dark cap. A travelling showman. He sold the cow at Wellingborough and absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Macleod, Wellingborough. S TAFFORDSHIRE. 26.— Lichfield ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered).— PERCY WRAITHMELL, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, tattooed both arms; dress, brownish tweed jacket and vest, dark grey trou- sers, grey cap, blue overcoat, brown boots. Oakden, Lichfield. 27 .— Uttoxeter ( County).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences, 9th inst.— HARRY WARD, alias WOOD, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion dark, sharp features, hair dark brown, heavy moustache and eyes brown • Northern accent; dress, grey overcoat, blue serge suit, slate- colour soft hat, blue tie with white spots, strong lace boots. Hodkinson, Uttoxeter. 28 — Wedneshury ( County).— For stealing £ 1, 1st inst.— WILLIAM KENDRICK, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, swinging gait; dress, dark grey mix- ture suit, brown cap, heavy nailed boots; may be wearing breeches and leggings or black suit " and light boots. A native of Walsall. Was employed as a milkman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. STIRLINGSHIRE. 2$.— Stirling ' Burgli).— For embezzling £ 17 7s. 6d., and stealing, between 8th January and 27th June last, 1 instrument case, containing 7 paii- s of forceps; 1 hypodermic syringe in card- board case, lined red plush, " Alvatunder & Elliott & Co.. Edinburgh," stamped inside lid, has 4 nickel- plated nozzles of different sizes, and 4 glass tubes for holding needles; 4 sets of artificial teeth ( 6 in each set); 5 show set9 of vulcanite teeth ( 14 in each set); 1 pair of pliers; 1 nair gum scissors; 1 small brief bag, clasp fastening.— LANCELOT HENDERSON, age 37, height 5 ft. 7i ins., hair and moustache turning grey, cut scar over right eye. speaks fluently; dress, dark grey suit, black hard felt hat; sometimes wears a blue serge suit. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Stirling. SURREY. Dorking ( County).— On commitment warrant for non- payment of 8s. fine and costs im- posed for leaving a donkey and cart unattended on the highway.— CHARLES CRAWTE, age about 36, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fair, hair light sandy, eyes supposed grey; a gipsy. On commitment warrant for non- payment of 5s. 6d. and 8s. fines and costs imposed for drunk- enness, respectively.— SARAH TYRELL, age 62, height 4 ft. 11 ins., stout build, complexion fresh,' hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes blue. A field worker.— GEORGE EWENS, age 44, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey. A pedlar. Is believed to have in his pos- session a certificate, No. 1555, dated 3rd January, 1911, granted at Dorking. Information to Supt. Coleman, Dorking. WARWICKSHIRE. 81.— L O n g f or d ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) £ 1 0s. 8d., at Bedworth, 18th ult.— FRANK HENRY BISHOP, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scald scars right side of chin, neck and chest; of smart appearance; dress, light grey suit, band at back of jacket, light striped tie, bowler hat.
