All communications ( or insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TIIE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, it they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. d. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of Us. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unv < ually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. C. Evertt announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed hi/ the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable , they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all eases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on \ X< dnesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at thi office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. BERKSHIRE. o.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences.— ELDRED WOOD, alius JAMES RIXON, alias COOK and WARD, Office No. 2075- 02, age 41, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair grey ( thin on top), eyes brown, scar forehead and right cheek, mole over left eye and left side of neck, birthmark right upper arm; dress, dark blue navy suit, fawn- colour cap, soft white collar, grey shirt, pink stripes. Has been convicted at Godstone, Doncaster, Guild- ford, Lewes and Maidstone. Rixon ( who is on licence until the 10th Decem- ber, 1913) left the Farnham police district without notifying the police. A labourer. Has served in the 6th Middlesex Regiment. Had in his possession several testimonials. Stays at com- mon lodging houses. Seeks employment as a job- bing gardener. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. 7.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing 50s. from lodgings, 7th inst.— SIDNEY SMITH, age ibout 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light; London accent; stoops slightly; addicted to drink, fond of singing in public- houses; dress, dark ( morning coat) suit, hard felt hat, rather shabby. Recently been em- ployed fixing glass advertisements on shop win- dows. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. CUMBERLAND. 8.— Brampton ( County).— For obtaining 5s. 9d. by fraud.— WILLIAM HINDLE, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 ins., slight build, hair brown, small moustache; a native of Blackburn. Represents himself as traveller for the British Metal Engrav- ing Co., Kingston- on- Thames; seeks orders for post- cards, bill- heads, rubber stamps, etc., and obtains money on account. Previously convicted at Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Whiteside, Brampton. ESSEX. 9.— Braintree ( County).— For embezzling £ 8 16s. Id., lst June last— LOUIS JOHN IIOL- LINGS, age 36, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion fresh, full face, hair dark brown; wearing dark clothes and cap, sometimes wears knickers and khaki putties. An insurance superintendent. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. 10.— Braintree ( County).— For stealing £ 2, 7th inst.— ALBERT GEORGE TAYLOR, age 25, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, long face, hair light; dress, brownish grey mixture suit, cap, Oxford shoes. Cowell, Braintree. 11.— Chelmsford ( County).— For leaving his wife and six children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Poor Law Union.— ERNEST JOHN WARRICKER, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair brown, eyes grey. May be found working as a labourer on a building or public works. Recently seen at Coventry; a native of Chelmsford. Warrant issued. NUNN, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair ( turning grey) dark; dress, black frock coat, dark trousers, silk hat, carried an umbrella with crook handle. Left Southend about two weeks ago with a bicycle, which he hired, and may attempt to dispose of. Has served in 2nd Grenadier Guards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Southend- on- Sea. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 15.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a lady's gold Geneva watch, gold dial with flowers thereon, rather old, and a long gold curb- pattern guard.— KATE HAMBLIN, age 20, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., inclined to be stout, complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, prominent nose; wearing dark fawn- colour rainproof coat, black hat, trimmed small white roses. A carpet weaver, native of Minchinhampton; may be working as a labourer. Stated his intention of going to Wales. Absconded 3rd inst., in company with the girl Sarah Edith Dean, age 16^ ( looks 19), height about 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, white blouse, black skirt and jacket, black hat trimmed with velvet, lace boots; may be wearing a wedding ring; red birth- mark from palm of right hand to neck, where it is very noticeable. May seek employment as a barman. Has served in the Rifle Brigade. Warrant issued. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining a banker's cheque for £ 152 10s. by false pretences, 6th May last.— E. LANDAU, alias WINEBAUM,. age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion fair, hair ( short) and moustache light, of good address, believed a Pole, speaks German and French and fairly good English; usually wears morning coat, two rings, large pearl pin, gold watch chain with masonic emblem attached, and gold pince nez. Poses as manager of a London City branch of the German Asiatic Banking Co., Ltd. Accompanied by his wife ( not wanted), age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 ins., stout build, large growth on neck; two boys, ages 9 years and 18 months respectively; and a German nurse. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. A flower seller; is known at Croydon and Mitcham. Warrant issued. 22.— Southampton ( Borough).— For being • oncerned with a woman in custody, charged with housebreaking.— A CH'UNN, alias CHUBB, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft, 7 or 8 ins., hair and slight moustache light; dress, brown coat and vest, dark trousers with blue stripes, cap, and A MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion and slight moustache dark; dress, brownish coat, whitewash stains thereon, black bowler hat. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23.— Hereford ( City).— For obtaining two natural woven shirts, 2 day flannelette shirts, 2 pairs of pants, a suit of pyjamas, 2 pairs of navy blue socks, and £ 4 10s. 8d. by false pretences, 23rd ult.— G. DAVIES, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion tawny, flat nose, decayed tooth in front, hair dark, moustache brown; dress, blue suit, believed black cap; appearance of a seaman. He selected the goods, tendered a seaman's ad- vance note for the Port of Cardiff, representing that he was the chief mate on the S. S. " Dalebank," and that the ship would leave Cardiff on 24th ult. Warrant issued. 24.— Hereford ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 13th ult,— FRAN- CIS C. PINEO, a ship's steward, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion and hair dark, clean shaven; dress, light suit and cap. He frequen- ted the Y. M. C. A. rooms for a few days, represented he was a steward employed by a Liverpool firm, borrowed £ 1 from the secretary, who also obtained food and lodgings for him at a boarding house. Absconded 13th ult., leaving behind a strong solid leather portmanteau of foreign manufacture, 2 ft. 4 ins. long by 14 ins., maker " Suela, Garantida" on top near handle, A. W. painted in red on each end, flat brass lock under leather flap on top, parts of several old shipping labels on side, and two side straps, lined with grey canvas, in good condition, containing a ship's account of wages slip, showing Pineo to have been discharged from the " Vandyck" at Liverpool in August last, Official No. 131378; 10 linen collars, R. W. Cassels written inside some, sizes 14 and 14i ins., makers A. W. Hutton & Co., Buenos Ayres; 1 blue soft felt hat, small; 1 blue and white striped night shirt; 1 pair of blue and white striped cuffs, T. Hearne written on one; 1 dark grey vest; 1 linen shirt, very small blue stripes, R. W. Cassels inside collar; 1 pair pink pants; 1 old blue shirt, R. W. C. inside collar; 1 light shirt, F. Garrett written inside collar; 1 pillow slip; 1 pair of green cycling stockings; 1 pocket handkerchief; 2 hair brushes, shaving soap and brush; 1 Kropp razor and a Bible, which has no doubt been stolen. Several letters and telegrams have been received by the Secretary of the Y. M. C. A. here, which were dispatched from Bristol, the last on the 31st August, 1912. Is identical with MAN, Case 17, 24th May, 1912. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hereford. KENT. 25. - Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 13th July last, a bicycle ( recovered). SCOTT, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair light; wearing dark clothes, lace boots. Accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), age about 23, height about 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion and hair dark; dress, heavy dark clothing, lace boots, wear- ing 2 gold rings. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Canterbury. 26.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing bicycle, Case No. 69, 23rd ult. ( recovered).— G. ALLEN, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 ins., extensively tattooed both arms, including palm tree, snake, etc.; dress, dark coat, brown cord trousers, nearly new, old boots. Will no doubt seek employment as a navvy on public works. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 27. - Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 27th ult., a Speedy Road- Racing Premier bicycle, 24- in. sloping top tube frame, black, lined bronze colour, mudguard with forward extension to mjatch, North Road raised handle bars, inverted lever brakes, 26 by If wired wheels, rusty, Cambridge tyres, Lucas pattern Challis alarm bell, No. 332508 on saddle lug of frame.— JOE COHEN, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion dark, clean shaven, of Jewish appearance; dress, navy blue suit, light cap. A hawker. Is fond of boxing, and may assume the name of HARRY SMITH. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing, 6th inst., a steel chain purse containing 14s. 6d., and a brown brief bag about 18 ins. long. WIL- SON, age about 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven, stoops; dress, dark suit and cap. Stated he came from London. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. 29.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For obtaining 9s. by false pretences, 2nd inst.— PATRICK ROLKE, alias COOK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fair, hair ( bald in front) dark brown, clean shaven, scars each side of neck; dress, black jacket, vest and cap, moleskin trou- sers, dark green and blue- striped muffler, light lace boots. He took lodgings, stated he had been injured in a pit at Bury, that he was entitled to draw £ 100 compensation at the post office, and obtained the above amount for stamps, etc. Warrant issued. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30.— Boston ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., two bicycles ( recovered).— WILLIAM HENRY BARNES, age about 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., rather round shoulders, W. B. and woman on one arm; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers. — WILLIAM KENNEY, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion fair, " The road to ruin," woman and horse's head on one arm • dress, light jacket and vest, dark trousers and cap. May seek employment on public works or at foun- dries. Labourers, and supposed natives of Wis- beach. Warrants issued. 31.— Boston ( County).— For stealing ( servant) £ 5 10s., 27th ult.— BEATRICE PAULINE PHILLIPS, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., round face, rather red nose, hair light, eyes blue, slight deformity in eyes, may be wearing glasses, bad front teeth; dress, blue or black costume, black beehive hat, trimmed" cord ribbon, wearing a heart- shape locket ( blue on one side) and chain, carried a rush dress basket. A domestic servant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Boston. NORFOLK. 32.— Norwich ( City\— For failing to appear to a summons for an offence under the Bankruptcy Act.— ERNEST SILVESTER SAUNDERS, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair dark, supposed clean shaven, of gipsy appearance, often wears breeches and leggings". A butcher; native of Shipdham. Is well known at stock sales and markets. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Norwich. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 33.— Peterborough ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 10th inst., a dark grey tweed suit; 1 pair light lace boots; 1 brown leather port- manteau, 20 by 9 ins. ( recovered); 1 dark brown " Telma" mackintosh, 2 outside flap pockets; 4 twill sheets; 1 fancy Irish linen bed- spread, plain edges, cream colour, open- net work in centre and corners.— ARTHUR GOLLINGS, age about 32, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion ( believed) fresh, hair and moustache light brown; dress, dark jacket and trousers, light cap; formerly a member of the Northamptonshire Constabulary. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Peter- borough. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 34.— Nottingham ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 by false pretences, 15th ult.— F. B. JEFFER- SON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 to 7 ins., com- plexion fair, hair brown, clean shaven; dress, grey mixture suit, bowler hat, carried a light cane; ap- pearance of a valet. He calls upon" persons con- nected with a political party, states he is footman to the member of Parliament for the constituency, that he is on a holiday and obtains a loan by stating he is short of money. Moss, Burton- on- Trent. 36 - Stoke - On- Trent ( Borough).— For stealing, 5th inst., from his lodgings at Burslem a Raleigh bicycle, No. 198922, black enamelled, red and green lined, dropped frame, inverted lever brakes, 2 mudguards, Warwick tyre back wheel, Clipper do. front do., Raleigh transfer on head, good condition.— JOHN HILL ( supposed false), age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, turning grey ( bald on top), mous- tache ( slight) sandy, only 1 tooth front upper jaw; dress, black jacket, brown vest, blue overalls, Scotch plaid cap, light blue knitted tie. Had in his possession a gold watch, " J. Hill " engraved on inner case. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable Hanley, Stoke- on- Trent. SUFFOLK ( East). 37.— I O west Of t ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 27th ult., an English lever watch, shield on back, black hands and numerals, " Latham, Tottenham Court Road, London " on inside case, gold chain, small square links, gold medallion, engine, on one side, A. S. R. C. and dog on other, attached.— FREDERICK WILLIAM MARSHALL, alias ALFRED WHITE ( supposed false), age 28, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven, bad front teeth, North Country accent; dress, brown mixture jacket and vest, grey trousers, bowler hat with broad brim, " Cuthbert, Cheapside" inside, patent leather boots with grey suede tops. Stated he was about to open a motor cycle shop in the town. Is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1912. RENFREWSHIRE. 75— Paisley ( County).— 8th inst., on the south side of the River Clyde at Newshot Isle, the body of A MAN, age about 60, length 5 ft. 10 ins., eyes brown, hair grey, upper lip and chin shaved, short- cropped grey beard under chin; dress, double- breasted blue pilot jacket and vest, lined flannel, flaps on lower pockets and inside pocket, dark grey tweed trousers, flannel semmit with red binding round neck, grey flannel shirt, yellow and blue striped, lined in back with grey flannel, salmon- coloured worsted drawers, with red latches, heavy blucher boots, newly soled and heeled, right boot laced with cable picture cord, a narrow leather belt with brass buckle. Found in the pockets: a pair of steel- rimmed spectacles in pasteboard case, 2 pocket knives, tin tobacco box, pair of scissors, small key, small pill box, rosary beads, 2d., a portion of the Glasgow Evening Times of Monday, 26th August, 1912, and a green muffler. The post- mortem examination revealed that death was due to haemorrhage from wounds inflicted on the thoat. No traces of drowning could be obtained, and it is strongly suspected that he has been murdered and the body thrown into the river. See Case No. 96. Information to the Chief Constable, Paisley.
