THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 5, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2976. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be address/ d to TUB EDITOB OF THI POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAUD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought vrill be imerted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8a. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ( is. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6i. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsibl* for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the • paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Pott Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. « 14. BEDFORDSHIRE. 5-— Bedford ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 1 by false pretences, 29th ult,— H. A. JONES, age about 60, height 5 ft. 10 ins., hair ( bald on top) moustache and eyes grey, top of nose very thin, slight Irish accent, walks erect; dress, light tweed suit, grey soft hat, white silk tie, brown boots, carries a stick. He took rooms at a hotel and represented that his banking account was being transferred to a local bank. Stated he was a re- tired major and spoke about Canada. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 1 bv false pretences, 27th ult.— ALBERT R. GIB- BONS, age 23, height 5 ft. 10 to 6 ft., hair and eyes dark, clean shaven; wearing a cap, blue jacket or light jacket and vest. Is believed to be suffer- ing from an old injury to left leg and walked with a stick or sticks. A native of Waltham Cross and about 4 years ago served a few months in the lst Life Guards. Is accompanied by a woman, said to be his wife, and stays at common lodging houses. He called upon officers of the Life Guards and stated his father used to be head keeper at Theo- bald's Park, Waltham Cross. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor- CHESHIRE. 7.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing the articles described in POLICE GAZETTE 28th ult, Case No. 65, also a dark grey Norfolk jacket, minus belt, and a grey cap.— A MAN, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair light " brown, clean shaved, tattooed wild roses left forearm; dress, dark grey jacket or grey Norfolk jacket without belt, dark grey breeches, brown leggings, grey cap, tie used as a scarf. A farm labourer, believed to be a gipsy. Previously worked at Royton, Lanes. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 8.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For obtain- ing money by false pretences ( forged telegram) from Oldenburg, Germany, 18th ult.— ALBERT RENE ROSSO- LEON, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., slight build, complexion very pale, inclined to yellow, hair black, eyes dark, nostrils slightly inflated; dress, light grey tweed lounge suit, white straw hat. Supposed a native of South America; speaks English well with strong German accent, and is believed to speak several languages. Stated he was an electrical engineer. May be found in company of women, particularly theatrical and music- hall artistes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Macclesfield. DERBYSHIRE. 9.— A / ft* e I O n ( County).— For stealing a dark brown tweed jacket, green stripes, overlaid seams, brown bone buttons, flaps to pockets, Italian cloth lining; 1 Union shirt, white and green stripes; 1 pair lace boots, size 8.— GEORGE ERNEST CLIFF, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, mole right cheek and between shoulders, 3 moles right side of neck, scar back of neck and on one fore- finger; wearing the stolen jacket; dark trousers with faint red stripes, grey cap, neckerchief. A farm labourer; native of Castle Donington, Leices- ter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fennell, Alfreton. 10— Ilkeston ( County\— For failing to surrender to his bail at Assizes, 25th ult., charged with obtaining money by fraud ( 3 cases).— JAMES WILSHAW, alias WILTSHIRE, SELBY, and CARVER, age 36, height 5 ft- 5i ins., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and eyes brown, clean shaven, cut scar right temple, scar on chin and right knee. A dealer : native of Sheffield. He advertises for sale parrots, dogs, bicycles, etc., ob- tains payment in advance, forwards the dogs, etc., which are found to be worthless. Is accompanied by a woman ( not wanted), age 22, height 5 ft, 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown. May be found travelling the country in a van or in company of low horse dealers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daybell, Ilkeston. DEVONSHIRE. 11.— Devonport ( Borough). For larceny ( trick).— GEORGE JACKSON, alias JAXON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, slight cast in one aye; dress, light grey suit, light brown mackintosh, brown boots. Has been em- ployed as a baker's van driver for about six months, and was supposed to have come from London. He advertised in local newspapers, viz., " Several men wanted, willing to be useful, pensioners pre- ferred. Box, etc." Called upon applicants, gave a written agreement, demanded a deposit of 10s. and upwards, and informed them when and where to present themselves for employment. Was ac- companied by a woman, ( supposed his wife), age about 26; dress, violet or heliotrope- coloured cos- tume. Also two children, ages 3 years, and 1 year and 3 months respectively. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( oontinu* d)— DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Bland ford ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a pony and cart ( recovered).— CHARLES ADAMS, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache sandy, eyes blue, addicted to drink; dre6s, brown suit, bowler hat. A native of Dorchester. May be found in company of low horse dealers or fish hawkers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sims, Blandford. 13— Dorchester ( County).— For obtaining 2s. by false pretences, 15th ult.— A MAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( curled at ends) sandy, appearance of a heavy drinker; dress, blue serge suit, straw hat, wearing gold- colour Al- bert chain. Had with him a 6mall pocket book and a small counterfoil receipt book. He called at a house where a card was exhibited " Apartments to let," stated he was agent for a firm at Swanage, took the rooms for a gentleman and received the above amount, for which he gave a receipt signed P. P. Hixton & Son. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dennett, Dorchester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. It-— Cardiff ( City)— For uttering a forged cheque.— JOHN TAYLOR, alias McCLUDE, age | 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 ins., good build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, inclined to sandy, right forefinger amputated. A boot repairer. He was secretary of a co- operative money society. Ab- sconded July, 1911. Warrant issued. 15.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a bicycle, " Albion" make, green enamelled, lined in two colours, 27- in. frame, 28- in. wheels, coaster hub, believed Eadie make, plated rims, front brake re- moved; and a metal watch. — WILLIAM HOLMES, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion pale, hair dark, clean shaven, impediment in speech; dress, dark striped tweed suit, green cap, soft pink front with small tucks- A collier; native of Middlesbrough. Warrant issued. 18 — Cardiff ( City).— For stealing 10s.— GEORGE BANFIELD, alias BEECHAM and BURROWS, Office No. 944- 09, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, mole back of nec] t. A Canadian. He ob- tains lodgings by representing that he is employed at a neighbouring works and steals money from the house or obtains it on the pretence of fetching his box from the railway station. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Bristol ( City)— For stealing £ 19 10s., 31st May.— MARY ELIZABETH FINNIMORE, age 57, height 5 ft. 4 ins., stout build, complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, walks badly, ad- dicted to drink; dress, dark grey jacket and skirt, blue blouse with stripes, cap, cloth boots. May be found at refreshment houses, lodging houses or casual wards. Absconded 31st May. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 85, 21st ult.— A MAN, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair ( bald on top) and moustache light brown; dress, dark suit, black bowler or white straw hat. Had with him a small black hand bag and paper parcel. A brewer's clerk. Absconded 21st ult. May en- deavour to leave the country. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 19. - Gosport ( County).- For stealing, 21st ult., 5 war medals ( recovered in pledge).— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion fresh, slight moustache light; dress, brownish grey suit with light stripes, grey cap, carried a light over- coat or mackintosh. Information to Supt. Abel, Gosport. 20.— Romsey ( County)— For obtaining a cheque for £ 50 by false pretences, 24th May— HENRY BRISCOE IRONSIDE, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache ( brushed up) light, of smart appearance and good address, rather hesitant in speech. Rep- resents himself as a motor engineer and traveller for the Paris branch of the New York Garage. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Garrett, Romsey. 21.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 11th May, a blue serge costume. ALLISON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 ins., hair ( believed dyed) brown, right forefinger missing. Is accompanied by a boy, aged 7 years. Stated she was a widow and in receipt of a Naval pension. Absconded 21st May. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 22.— Southampton ( Borough).- Vov stealing £ 1 17s. 6d.— B. KNIGHT, age 23 to 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion fresh, hail- brown; dress, light jacket, dark striped trousers, light motor cap. A chafieur. Warrant issued. Watford ( County).- For obtaining 3s. 6d. by false pretences, 16th ult.— WILLIAM FREDE- RICK HARRISON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 ins-, complexion sallow, thin face, crooked nose, hair dark, bad teeth; dress, dark jacket and trou- sers with green stripes, light grey fancy vest, green tie, black hard hat, drab- colour mackintosh coat. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Watford. 24.— St, Albans ( City).— For stealing from her lodgings, 27th ult., a lady's gold ring, chased, ivy and shamrock leaves; 1 indigo blue blouse, bishop sleeves, collar and cuffs trimmed white insertion; 1 lady's umbrella, handle slightly damaged.— — RUTTER, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 ins., mascu- line appearance, full face, hair ( turning grey) black, prominent teeth, one chipped, scars on arms and right eye; dress, dark tweed dress, the stolen blouse, dark blue blanket coat with four pockets and large buttons, blue hat trimmed five feathers. She takes lodgings, stating she is employed as a tailoress, after staying a short time commits lar- ceny and decamps- Also calls upon house agents to negotiate the purchase of houses, etc. Warrant issued. Warrant withdrawn- KENT. 26.— Margate ( Borough).— For embezzlement 24th ult.— GEORGE PEPPER, age 30 to 32,' height 5 ft. 4 ins., red face, hair and moustache light, scar left side of nose, walks badly, slightly hunch- backed, addicted to drink. A milk carrier; supposed a native of Sutton, Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 27.— L iverpool ( City)— For embezzling £ 4 0s. 6d., 17th ult.— BERTRAM STALMAN, age 25, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache, may be clean shaven, quiet retiring manner. Has been employed as manager of a boot repairing shop. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 28.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For stealing, 28th ult., a pair of boots, size 9.— EDWARD TIM- NEY, alias JONES, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 ins., good build, complexion fresh, clean shaven, cut over right eye. Has been employed as a drawer at a colliery, also as a labourer at brick works. Is a deserter from the 5th Dragoon Guards. Native of Coxlodge, Northumberland. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Helens. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. VS.— Northampton ( Borough)- Yor obtaining 2s. 6d- by false pretences, 15th ult.— J. REY- NOLDS, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion and hair dark, clean shaven, of Jewish appearance; dress, light suit, green soft hat. He called upon householders, stated he represented a well- known Sheffield firm, obtained several sums of money as deposits for goods which were to be sup- plied in a few days. Had with him an ordinary receipt book and a small parcel. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Northampton. OXFORDSHIRE. 30.— Banbury ( Borough).— For failing to observe the conditions of his recognizance under the Probation of Offenders' Act.— FRED MAT- THEWS, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( turning, grey) and mous- tache dark brown, well educated, erect bearing. - A road foreman. Bi.- Llandrindod Wells ( County),— For stealing ( bailee) £ 1— JOHN LLOYD, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaven; dress, dark grey suit, tight- fitting trousers, grey cap. States he is an Ameri- can jockey, obtains employment at farmhouses as horse- breaker. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Llandrindod Wells. SHROPSHIRE. 32.— Worn ( County).— For obtaining lis. by false pretences.— W- RYAN, alias FERGUSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, long features, cheeks slightly sunken, hair light brown, eyes blue, good teeth ( rather promin- ent), clean shaven; dress, grey tweed coat and trousers ( coat has band across back), gi een vest with small spots, grey cap, brown bo'ts, large horse- shoe pattern tie- pin, set stones or bril- liants, was employed by the Union Feeding Co., Ltd., Liverpool, as canvasser, and discharged iu March last. He calls upon people who have had dealings with above company and collects any outstanding debts. In above case signed receipt in name of J. W. Ferguson. Stays at temperance hotels or private lodgings and absconds without paying. Believed to be well known to canvassers for feeding stuffs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Francis, Wem. SURREY. 33.— Chertsey ( County).— For stealing, 20th ult., at Thorpe, 1 pair flannel trousers ( recovered); 1 white woollen polo sweater ( short sleeves); 1 white canvas cricket shirt with collar; 1 pair brown knitted socks.— FRANCIS BROWN, age 38, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., red face, high cheek bones, thick lips, hair light brown, clean shaven; may be wearing part of stolen property, white cricket boots, old cap, dark clothes, medal ribbon left breast, dark neckerchief. A groom; native of Egham. Absconded 21st ult. May be found at race meet- ings or livery stables. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mears, Chertsey. 34.— D O r k in g ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered). MUSKIN, alias PECK, age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, com- plexion fair, pointed features, hair light, clean shaven, impediment in speech; dre6s, grey tweed suit and cap, brown boots. A groom, may be found at racing stables or job vards. Absconded 10th ult Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Coleman, Dorking, SUSSEX ( East). So.— Portslade ( County).— For stealing a wheelbarrow ( recovered), 19th ult.— GEORGE SAUNDERS, alias HARRIS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion ruddy, full face, hair and moustache brown, eyes " blue, London accent; dress, blue jacket and vest, dark tight- fitting trousers, collar and tie, straw hat, light lace boots, rubber heels. Talked of having been engaged as gardener at the White City and Olympia- Supposed native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Suter, Portslade. YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 36.— Hull ( City).— For stealing ( bailee) 28 lbs. margarine. 7th ult.— JACK ELLIOTT, alias HEWITT and JEW1TT, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., rather slight build, complexion fresh, ruddv, long thin face, hair and moustache ( inclined to ginger) light brown, eyes light blue, prominent nose, rather large mouth, old scars back of head, addicted to drink; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, dark cap and muffler. A dock labourer. Frequents low public houses and lodg- ing houses. Warrant issued. 37.— Hull ( City).— For stealing £ 8 10s. from a ship, 10th ult.— ARTHUR SHARP, age 19 ( looks younger), height 4 ft. 10 ins., to 5 ft. 1 in., sturdy build, complexion very fresh, round face, hair ( cut short) light brown, eyes ( bold) blue; dress, pepper- and- salt- colour suit, " Arthur Sharpe " worked in wire fixed to collar, guernsey, lace boots. A ship's cook; native of Neyland, South Wales. Had with him a seaman's white canvas bag containing kit. Is on license from Ardwick Reformatory School. Warrant issued. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTR ICT 38:— Y Division-— For stealing jewellery, clothing, etc.— FRANK FRYER, alias Dr. FRYER and EDWARD ROBERT BROOKS, Office No. 2603- 01, age 39, height 6 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue ( sun- ken), very thin face, clean shaven, stoops slightly when walking, finger nails bitten to the quick, very respectable appearance ; chess, grey striped lounge suit, black hard felt hat, stand- up collar, patent shoes. He answers advertisements by young women and engages them to fill positions in the Provinces. He induces them to have their luggage conveyed to an hotel near a large terminus station or to the railway cloak room, then sends them ou an errand before leaving London for the post in the country, and after the victims have gone, takes possession of all the property and absconds. He also obtains their jewellery by false pretences. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W.
