POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2972. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be address*, d to TUE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property unll be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be. inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ( is. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less % ank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must, he guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They musi be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subseqw nt issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should bI prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. BERNDT. a Swiss, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion and hair dark^ moustache ginger, eyes full, two right fingers miss- ing ; dress, light brown suit, bowler hat, lace boots. Represented that he had a motor car which re- quired repairing and obtained money to purchase petrol. Warrant issued. A BERDEENSHIRE. 8.— Aberdeen ( City).— For fraudulent ad- vertisement, inducing several persons to purchase worthless bicycles; for obtaining the tenancy of a store by fraud and for obtaining storage for and re- pairs to a motor car, and 12 gallons of petrol by fraud, respectively.— GEORGE HEWES, alias G. B. HEWES, age about 33, height 5 ft. 11 ins., slight build, complexion swarthy, clean shaved, hair ( long) . black.— ALICE JONES or HEWES, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 ins., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair light.— JAMES GEEKIE, age about 55, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey. Acted as chauffeur. They arrived in Aberdeen on 2nd May, with a motor car which they put up at a local garage, then obtained private lodgings; advertised in the local newspapers, " Cycles. ( Lady's and Gent's) ; two high- grade machines; latest 1912 improve- ments; £ 12 12s. models; built to order; new re- cently ; sacrifice for 63s. each; urgent sale; going to Canada. Miss Jones, 69, Crown Street ( oppo- site Post Office), Aberdeen." In response to the advertisement a large number of people called at the address given, and the female is believed to have sold upwards of thirty bicycles. It has been ascertained that 38 bicycles, all consigned from " The Runwell Cycle Co., Birmingham," were re- ceived at the railway stations here, and taken de- livery of by George Hewes. The bicycles bore on the front tube a transfer with " The Lion Cycle Co., Birmingham, England." They also advertised furs and gramophones for sale. On 11th May, 1912, they left Aberdeen and were next heard of at Belfast, advertising and selling bicycles in the same manner, and appear to have left there on 28th May, 1912, by steamer for Fleetwood, stat- ing they were going to London. On 18th April, 1911, George Hewes was arrested at Exeter, on charges of a similar nature committed at Plymouth, and on 30th June, 1911, he was sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment. Warrants issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Aberdeen. ~ BERKSHIRE. 9.— Wantage ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 12th inst., an open- face silver watch, the figure VIII. has recently been repaired; jewel- led in four holes, " Robert Roskell, Liverpool" in_ side back case, steel hands, very old.— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion swarthy, hair black, eyes dark, " True love" tat- tooed right wrist; dress, navy blue jacket suit, raised seam front of trouser legs, dark overcoat, cap, light lace boots. Stated he was an agent for a gramophone company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gibbs, Wantage. CHESHIRE. 10.— LiSCard ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 16s. Id., by false pretences, at New Brighton, 23rd April, last.— A. G. HOWLETT, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fresh, round features, clean shaven, hair brown, turning grey ( bald on top), eyes brown ( short- sighted); dress, blue serge suit, soft grey felt nat; of" smart appear- ance; carried on the business of a financier in Liverpool.— M. H. HOWLETT, age about 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown ; dress, light grey or navy blue costume and black hat. The above ( supposed husband and wife) resided in this district for 15 months prior to May last; called at a local grocer's, made a small purchase, and presented a cheque apparently of the value of £ 3 16s. Id. over and above the purchase, which amount was handed to Howlett as change. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McHale, Liscard. ESSEX. 11.— Brentwood ( County).— For embezzling £ 3 6s. 5d., 14th inst.— EDWARD JAMES BAS- TOW, age 35, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy moustache ( inclined to curly) dark, eyes brown, very thick neck, near- sighted, knock kneed; dress, dark grey suit, with green stripes, black and white check cap, mauve tie, lace Derby boots, nearly new. A milkman; native of London. Has been in business in Folkes- tone, and at one time was employed by a firm of dairymen at Ealing. Absconded 14th inst. Warrant isBued. Information to Supt. GLA MORGANSHIRE. 16— TreharrSs ( County). - For obtaining a horse, at Caerphilly, 6th inst., by a worthless cheque for £ 28 10s., drawn on the National & Provincial Bank, Worcester.— GEORGE ROLFE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 ins., slight build, com- plexion fair, hair light, clean shaven, talks rather childish; dress, brown suit, green soft hat, dark tie. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Alton ( County). — For stealing, 11th inst., at Bordon, a blue serge suit, nearly new, and a dark cap.— GEORGE AUSTIN, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, bird carrying letter, flower and Will right arm, butterfly, clasped hands and flowers left forearm, scar right forefinger, supposed wear- ing the stolen clothing. Reuben, Alton. 18.— Gosport ( County).— For leaving his wife and child chargeable to the Alverstoke Union.— SAMUEL MAITLAND STEVENSON, age 26, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, brown birthmark on forehead; dress, black suit. A native of Paisley. Was dis- charged from the Royal Marine Light Infantry in March last. Stated his intention of obtaining a berth on a ship. Warrant issued. HEREFORDSHIRE. 19.— ROSS ( County).— For obtaining os. by false pretences, 27th ult.— JAMES MILLS, age about 24, height 5 ft 6 or 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaven, 2 front upper teeth and left thumb missing; dress, drab- colour slop or cord vest with sleeves, cord breeches, leather leggings, muffler, cap. FRANCIS RAMSEY, alias DE SAUMARIA, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, eczema marks on hands, wrists, elbows and chest; dress, dark suit with thin white stripes, grey soft hat, had with him a brown kit bag con- taining a dress suit, " Poole & Co., Oxford Street" on tab. LANCASHIRE. 22.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For carnally knowing a girl age 15 years, 19th ult.— THOMAS GRADY, alias O'GRADY, age 27, height 5 ft. 4£ ins., rather stout build, full round face, hair brown, eyes blue, of military appearance; dress, new black suit, blue silk muffler, black cap. A labourer. Is a reservist of the Manchester Regi- ment. Warrant issued. 23.— St. Helens ( Uorough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 14th inst., a blue serge suit, velvet collar on jacket.— PATRICK DEVANEY, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fair, hair ( curly) and small moustache ginger, eyes blue; wearing the stolen suit, blue and green silk muf- fler and cap. A collier or contractor. Is said to be a native of Swineford, Charlestown. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Helens. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Lincoln ( City).- For embezzling £ 5 be- tween 1st and 23rd April last.— JOHN ELSE JENKINSON, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., hair and moustache brown, and beard cut short, turning grey; dress, light grey suit, light cap, light rainproof overcoat, may be wearing knickers and grey stockings. A clerk. Is fond of singing at concerts. A fcreman maltster. May seek employment as a faim labourer. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Lincoln. 26 — Grimsby ( Borough).- For larceny ' lodg- ings), 31st ult.— HARRY ST. CLAIR, alias HAROLD ST. CLAIR, FREDERICK ELLIOT and BERT ALLEN, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair light, clean shaven, eyes blue, one gold tooth, woman and bird left fore- arm, woman in lathing costume, crossed hands, heart and butterfly right forearm; dress, light jacket and trousers, with dark stripes, fancy vest, soft felt hat, lace boots with cloth tops, wears a red badge with white rat thereon in coat, carried a light mackintosh. A music- hall artist; native of Canada. Represented that he was employed at the local music- hall. May be found in company of music- hall artists or prostitutes. Warrant issued. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 27.— Wellingborough ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 8th inst., a drab- colour mackintosh coat, usual pockets, nearly new; 1 lady's silver watch, old, " Jane Smith" scratched inside case.— FREDERICK HARRISON ( prob- ably false), age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion sallow, thin face, crooked nose, bad teeth, hair dark, clean shaven; dress, dark jacket and trousers, with green stripes, light grey fancy vest, green tie, black hard hat, grey gloves, lace boots. He took lodgings, stating he was about to open a business as a tea and sugar merchant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Macleod, Wellingborough. SHROPSHIRE. 23.— Whitchurch ( County).— For non- pay- ment of £ 9 10s. fine and costs imposed for offences under the Motor Car Act, 1903,— FRANK NEL- SON GREEN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh., hair black, slight moustache dark, abscess marks under chin and jaw, Birming- ham accent; dress, dark suit, overcoat, blue and white muffler, thin lace boots. A motor car driver, licence No. 1198, granted at Peterborough, 12th January, 1912; believed a native of Peterborough. He is at present driving a Net merchant about the country, selling nets for fruit trees, etc., in a car, A. R. 2746, 12- 16- horse- power, Rothwell 2 seats, open body, painted green. ABBOTT, age about 38, height 6 ft. 3 ins., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, sliglit moustache light, tattoo marks both arms; dress, blue reefer coat, moleskin trousers, blue muf- fler with light stripes, grey cap. Has served in the Army, and believed in the South African War. A navvy. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bath. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30.— Lichfield ( County).— For game trespass. — AMOS MATTHEWS, alias JOHN WOOD, age 33, height 5 ft. 6J ins., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes brown. A native of Broughton, Leicestershire. Warrant issued. . Information to Supt. Oakden, Lichfield. 31.— Tettenhall ( County).— For stealing be- tween 1st and 3rd inst., at Compton, carpenter's tools ( recovered).— HOWARD HARRIS, alias CHARLES WYNN and EDGAR GWYNN, age 24, height 5 ft. 5J ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, bracelet and leaf right fore- arm. A native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. 82.— Tettenhall ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered).— JACK EATON, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, dark jacket and trousers, blue tie, bowler hat. Robotham, Tettenhall. 33.— Wednesbury ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 17th inst., a dark grey lounge suit, black bone buttons, blue lining in vest and sleeves of jacket, 3 outside pockets with flaps, " Coney, Wednesbury" on jacket tab; 1 new white dress shirt with green stripes, double cuffs, W. H. in red ink on collar; 1 white collar, W. H. in red ink thereon.— — DAVIDSON, age about 33, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fair, full round face, hair light, eyes blue; wearing the stolen articles, dark overcoat, black bowler hat, brown kid gloves, carried an umbrella. A native of London. Stated he was journalist for a London newspaper. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. 34.— Walsall ( Borough).- For failing to report — JOSEPH PEACH, Office No. 1623- 09, age 30, height 5 ft. 4f ins., complexion florid, hair fair, eyes blue, female, broken dagger, bust of female and " Phoebe" tattooed outside right forearm, Buffalo Bill and anchor inside right forearm, clas- ped hands back right wrist, clasped hands and heart back right hand, heart back left hand. Sen- tenced at Gloucester County Quarter Sessions, 6th April, 1910, to 6 months' hard labour and 2 years' police supervision for larceny. Supervision expires 29th August, 1912, Prison Reg. No. 1056. SUFFOLK ( East). 36.— Lowestoft ( County).— For leaving his children chargeable to the Mutford and Lothing- land Union.— THOMAS EDWARD SKIL LINGS, age 36, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., com- plexion and hair dark, eyes broWn, slight twist left side of mouth; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, dungaree trousers, heavy lace boots. A native of Holt, Norfolk. Has been employed as a labourer at electrical works. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 1 for information leading to the arrest, and £ 1 for the arrest of Skillings, will be paid by the Guardians of the Mutford and Loth- ingland Union.
