POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 191* 2. VOL. XXIX., No. 2954. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THB POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. i. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must bt clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be intcrted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 9. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of ^ police, or hit immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should bt prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within thi United Kingdom. BUCKINGHA MS HI RE. 6.— Newport Pagnell ( County)- For obtaining £ 3 10s- Od. by a fictitious cheque drawn on the London City and Midland Bank, Hockley Hill, Birmingham, 27th ult., at Stony Stratford.— EBENEZER WILLSON, age about 28, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., hair ( wavy) dark, of smart appearance; dress, blue jacket and vest, brown riding breeches, leggings and boots, or grey over- coat and cap, blue trousers, black boots. WEBSTER, alias PENDO, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., round shoulders, complexion sallow, hair brown, large protruding eyes, bends knees forward when walking, addicted to drink, an inveterate snuff taker; dress, brown three- quarter length overcoat, blue or slate colour jacket and vest, dark trousers, hard hat with small brim, old brown shoes. A travelling watch repairer, native of Birmingham. Stays at common lodging house ® . Warrant issued. 8.— Renishaw ( County).— Vox- stealing part of a reaping machine ( recovered) at Ecking- ton, 26th ult.— ARTHUR HOOTON, age about 34, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue; dress, brown overcoat ( torn at back), blue cotton jacket, dark cap, black vest, brown cord trousers, all far worn and greasy. A thrashing machine driver or feeder, supposed native of Nottingham. Warrant issued. 9.— Renishaw ( County).— For highway robbery at Eckington, 4th January last.— JOHN JAMES TAYLOR, age 26, height 5 ft. 4i ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, clasped hands, heart, " Ellen," outside right foreaijn, tomb- stone left forearm, scar right of chin ; dress, dark blue jacket and vest, cap, brown riding breeches ( worn), and putties. Twelves, Stephenson Place, Ches- terfield" painted in white on lid, " Moccasin" on side and bottom.— A MAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build ; dress, dark suit, cap. The firm received a telephone message asking that several pairs of boots be sent on approval to a local doctor, this was done, a few minutes later the doctor was rung up and informed that the boots had been sent in error, and that an employee of the firm would call for them. The above described called for same and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Chesterfield. ESSEX. 11.— Southend ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Rochford Union, 9th March, 1911.— GEORGE CAMPEN, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 9 ins., round face, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, of military appearance. J- CURTIS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair light; wearing dark overcoat and bowler hat. ( See Case No. 6, 29th December, 1911). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crowhurst, Sittingbourne. LANARKSHIRE. 21.— Glasgow ( City).- For stealing jewellery, and obtaining money by bogus cheques between lst and 3rd inst.— WILLIAM BAKER, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft 9 ins., complexion pale, hair and small moustache dark brown, may be clean shaven, right eye artificial, we, ars glasses, well dressed. A native of London. He traded as Baker, Baker, General Dealers, St. George's Road, and advertised extensively. At one time he carried on a similar business in Caledonian Road, London, N. Absconded 3rd inst., accompanied by his son, age 19. May endeavour to leave the country. May have in his possession a considerable quan- tity of jewellery and a large sum of money. Is identical with J. W. Benson, Case 22, 27th January last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, 21st ult., a gold keyless watch, white dial, dent in outer case, 1 gold double curbed albert, with slide bar, Kruger sovereign attached; 1 lady's 18- ct. gold keeper ring, flower pattern.— GEORGE DADLEY, age 21 to 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( long) black; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, light cap; may be wearing a dark grey double breasted overcoat with belt. Took lodgings and stated he was an electrician, and employed at the Hippodrome, Manchester- Native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crossley, Old Trafford- 23 — Liverpool ( City).— For stealing ( by trick) £ 19 5s 5d., 5th inst.— A MAN, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion and eyes dark, hair and moustache black, appearance of an Italian or Portuguese, speaks broken Eng- lish ; wearing grey mixture rainproof overcoat, bowler hat. He obtained the money in exchange for dollar notes, purporting to have been issued by the State Bank at New Brunswick, New Jer sey; the notes are said to be worthless; also passed as current coin, Russian coin which has been called in. May be found at Seaports. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool 24.— Manchester ( City)— GEORGE BELL, Office No. 3435- 98, Case 23, 15th September, 1911. Not now wanted. 25.— Manchester \( City).~ For obtaining by false pretences, 10th inst., a banker's cheque for £ 80.— AYANA REDDY, age 18, height 5 ft., slight build, clean shaven, thick lips, face pock pitted ; a man of colour; native of the East Indies, speaks fairly good English; dress, dark striped shoddy suit, bowler hat, and a brown mackintosh, torn. Is known to have consigned by the S. S. " Montgomeryshire," to Calcutta, a quantity of goods which, it is believed, have also been falsely obtained, and it is expected that he will follow at an early date. Warrant issued. NORFOLK. 27.— Norwich ( City)— For embezzlement— HERBERT HOLDEN, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark; dress, dark jacket suit, light cap. A journeyman baker; native of Catford or Lewisham. Absconded 27th ult., ac- companied by his wife ( not wanted), age 21, height 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, wearing dark clothing; and a child age 9 months. Warrant issued. 28.— Norwich ( City)— For stealing ( bailee), 30th ult., a bicycle ( recovered).— WILLIAM SEL- LARS, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 ins., good build, round face, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes dark, brown, of military appearance; dress, dark navy blue suit, reefer jacket, check cap, lace boots. Be- lieved a native of Aberdeen and to be a reservist of the Royal Field Artillery. Last season he was employed as checker on a fish wharf at Yarmouth. Stays at common lodging houses, recently employed as a labourer with motor car company, prior to which he sold laces and called upon Scotch per- sons for assistance. May be found in company of fishermen at low public houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Norwich. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 29.— Bradford ( County)— For stealing at Shipley, a black leather oblong purse, with side clasp ; a red leather purse, fastens with elastic band and £ 10.— HILDA DAVIS, age 19, height 5 ft'. 1 or 2 ins., complexion pale, thin face, hair light; dress, blue costume, putty- coloured hat. A native of Stockton- on- Tees. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Morley, Court House, Bradford. SO.— Doncaster ( County). — For shopbreak- ing, 9th inst., and stealing £ 20.— JAMES CON- NOR ( correct name ALEXANDER LAIRD), age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) dark ginger, heavy moustache ginger; dress, navy blue serge suit, dark tie, light greenish cap. A native of Auchterarder. Is a reservist of the Army Service Corps; stays at common lodging houses and associates with betting men. May be found working as a labourer or navvy on public works. In possession of four pairs of spectacles, with gold- coloured frames. A jockey, but at lodgings re- presented to be an engineer. Native of New York. Also wanted at Wellington ( Salop). Each bear a private mark of one or more of the following letters: " C. U. M. B. E. R. L. A. N. D."; 1 pair heavy blue trousers; 1 pair dark brown trousers, dark stripes, size 5 or 6.— WILLIAM JOHNS, alias FEIST, age 19, height 5 ft. 6i ins., complexion fresh, a mess- room steward; ' A rose with " W. Feist " tattooed inside right- forearm; wearing brown jacket, black muffler, green shirt with white stripes, sailor's Federation badge ( reversed) on coat. Believed accompanied by A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 ins., moustache dark; dress, dark green suit with light stripes, new boots, dark muffler, cap. 14.— Cardiff \ City).— For obtaining £ 1 14s. 3d., also a quantity of tobacco, cigars, etc., by a worthless cheque.— ARTHUR THOS. EDWARD DAVIES, age 55, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, broad face, wears gold rimmed glasses; dress, semi- frock coat, dark trousers, dark felt hat, lace boots. Supposed a schoolmaster, and native of Hereford. Warrant issued. 15.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a quantity of rope.— GEORGE QUICK, alias WILLIAMS and SULLIVAN, Office No. S. 52661, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, two warts left cheek, scar left forearm, fleshy mole centre back of neck; has been con- victed at Barry and Swansea.— W. C. EVANS, alias HICKS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 ins., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark; wear- ing dark clothes, muffler, large peak cap. May be found in vicinity of Docks or Shipping Offices- Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 16.— Cheltenham ( County). - For obtaining food, lodgings and money by false pretences.— MAUD COOLE, alias JONES, PRITCHARD and CARTER, age about 36, height 5 ft. 9 ins., hair ( turning grey) light brown, eyes dark, 3 scars right side of neck, bad front teeth, 3 or 4 left upper teeth missing; dress, long navy blue coat, navy blue skirt, flannelette blouse, purple green and white stripes; heliotrope toque with roses to match, black veil, Oxford shoes, old brown kid gloves. Was accompanied by a boy, age 4 years, complexion fair, heavy appearance about eyes; dress, green jersey, trousers and cap, grey or brown overcoat, white silk neckerchief, brown socks and boots. Stated she was a native of Dean Forest, and came here for the purpose of consulting a solicitor with respect to property left her by a relative; also stated that her home was in Cardiff. Is well- known at Swindon, and was convicted of false pretences at Dorchester in 1911. Absconded 6th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 17.— Bristol ( City). - - For stealing £ 4 4s., 8th inst.— WALTER KINGSTON CALLER, age about 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, cut scar on temple near right eye, slightly deaf right side; dress, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, cap, lace boots. He belongs to the Army Reserve. Absconded 8th inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Alton ( County) — For embezzlement, 15th February and 27th ult., at Borden.— ALICIv TIMMS, age about 25, height about 5/ ft. 4 ins., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, may be clean shaven; of Jewish appearance; dress, blue serge suit, light cap. A clothier's assistant. May endeavour to obtain a situation by a testi- monial signed by E. Evans & Co., tailors and out- fitters, Woolwich Road, S. E. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. HER TFORDSHIRE. 19. — Watford ( County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 27th ult.— R. J. FIELD, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark, turning grey; dress, brown jacket and trousers, new fancy vest, hard left hat, red tie, lace boots. Calls at a Labour Exchange, Public Office, or Library to get the name and address of a gardener or caretaker in LINCOLNSHIRE. 26.— Epworth ( County)— For obtaining a half- legged brown horse, about 15 hands 2 ins., 11 years, white on forehead, by a worthless cheque, No. 1482, for £ 9, on the Metropolitan and Notts. Banking Co., Ltd., Doncaster, payable to Adams, signed Mr. Blackwell, on 12th inst., at Haxey.— A MAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., com- plexion fresh; dress, dark suit, red and green tie, green soft hat, lace boots, had with him a dark cap, gold or imitation ring on right little finger. Sup- posed to have in his possession a cheque book on above Bank. May be accompanied by a man, and is said to be well known to the police at Shef- field and Leeds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Hill, Epworth, 32.— Wrexham ( County)— Remanded till 23rd inst., charged with fowl- stealing at Ruabon. — WILLIAM RANSON, age 62, height 5 ft- 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey. A collier ; came from Doncaster about 6 months ago. Supposed previously convicted at Stafford. 33 — Wrexham ( County)— Remanded till 23rd inst., charged with obtaining food and lodg- ings by false pretences, at Ruabon. THOMAS SMITH, alias FOWLES, age 26, height 5 ft. 3J ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel", prominent irregular teeth. Has served in the Royai Field Artillery. Believed previously convicted at Liverpool and Chester. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Wrexham. brown suit and motor overcoat with strap at back, black bowler hat, white collar and muffler, lace boots; also WILLIAM HARDY, Office No. 1907- 04 ( Illustrated Circular 86, figure 14, and Case 52, 5tli January, 1912), age 31, height 5 ft. provincial town, and have a situation to go to in London; the first opportunity that offers one steals the jewellery, etc., while the other engages the landlady in conversation.
