POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SEBIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1912. VOL. XXIX., No. 2948. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZBTTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted m one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the artitle in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s, per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6 » . should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 0. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of 1 polioe, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may be, 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 9. 10. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should b* prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. McDERMOTT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in6., slight build, drooping shoulders, com- plexion pale, hair auburn, clean shaven, eyes blue, sometimes wears pince- nez, bad teeth; dress, dark clothes and cap, sometimes wears frock coat and silk hat. He calls upon house and estate agents for lists of property to let, selects 2 or 3 houses, and gives himself as reference in one of the above names. Warrant issued. 5.— Y Division.— For embezzling £ 1— FREDERICK GEORGE SPENCER, age 17 or 18, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion sallow, very freckled, hair light; dress, dark jacket suit, white muffler, cap with large peak, blucher boots, of gipsy appearance. G.— Biggleswade ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a bicycle, at Sandy, 18th inst.— JOSEPH WINGFIELD, alias BONFIELD, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, ey. blue,. slightly deaf left side; dress, dark jacket, Army cord breeches, khaki putties, cap turned up at back, heavy lace boots. BERKSHIRE. 7.— CI ewer ( County).— For obtaining 18s. by false pretences.— H. WISE, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, stcops, complexion fresh, mous- tache ginger. He advertised ducklings for sale in the Poultry and had his letters addressed to a shop in Holloway. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holding, Clewer. 8.— Windsor ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 4 by forging and altering a Post Office Money Order, 5th inst.— F. E. Warrant issued. 9.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining an overcoat by false pretences— HENRY STAF- FORD, age about 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., com- plexion fair, hair ginger, a shoemaker. CUMBERLAND. 10.— Penrith ( County).— For obtaining 40 sheep by false pretences, 14th ult.— SAMUEL MATHER, alias GEORGE BECK and SAMUEL MORTON, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair light brown, moustache light, may now be clean shaven ; dress, light brown suit, overcoat with astra- clian collar, square top felt hat. Attends farm stock sales, makes purchases, for which he pays cash, then obtains credit by stating he has taken a farm in the District. Travels with a pony and trap, and accompanied by a woman ( supposed his wife). Warrant issued Information to Supt. Barron, Penrith. DERBYSHIRE. 11— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing from their lodgings, 25th inst., a suit ( recovered) ; 1 pair lace boots, size 7, Derby fronts.— HARRY WILSON, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, hair ( curly) and eyes dark, clean shaven, weak voice, long scar on head, subject to fits-; dress, dark overcoat with red stripes, dark check trousers, white muffler, dark cap, brown boots ( blacked), may be wearing the stolen boots. A file cutter. HANNAH WILSON ( supposed wife of above), age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 ins., good build, very red face ( spots thereon), hair dark, b<- teeth ; dress, black dress, long light coat, old strav? hat. Wore a Salvation Army brooch. A native H ' I of Newcastle- on- Tyne. Stated they were mem- bers of the Salvation Army, and were well acquainted with the South of Yorkshire. 12.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 9th inst., a. pair of brown lace boots, toe caps, far worn, and a white cotton muf- fler— CHARLES AUSTIN, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, ostrich right forearm, shamrock and leaves left forearm. A bricklayer's labourer. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Chesterfield. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 13.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a quantity of clothing.— ELLEN PULLEN, age 45, height 5 ft., complexion pale, hair grey ( wears a wig); wearing fawn- colour skirt, large blue hat. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 14.— Gloucester ( County). — GEORGE GALLY, alias GARRY, Case 16, 15th inst., has been identified as George Gaily, Office No. 307- 12. Warrant issued. IB.— Fareham ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) £ 51 at Durley, 23rd inst., A YOUTH, age 15, height 5 ft. 1 in., comnlexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, long dark grey overcoat, dark jacket with light stripes, dark cord trousers, dark cap, heavy lace boots.— A MAN, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes blue, upper teeth decayed, clean shaven; dress, navy blue suit, long grey overcoat, bowler hat, purple tie. A chauffeur, stated his intention of returning to America, and will no « loubt be accompanied by the first described. Both natives of Durley, Hants. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. KENT. 19.— Ash fort! ( County').- For obtaining boots by false pretences— EDWARD EAMES, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion pale, hair dark, north country accent; dress, dark tweed suit, hard felt hat, Derby pattern boots. Stated he was a farmer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Ashford. 20— Maidstone ( Borough).— CHARLES ALFRED HOWE, described in Case 25, 22nd inst., has been identified as CHARLES ALFRED HOWE, Office No. 778- 03. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 21.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For burglary. 25th inst.— JOSEPH McCOY, alias DAILEY, Office No. 1897- 01, age 28, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; scar on forehead, " J. M- D. " and indistinct marks tattooed right forearm, bust of woman back right hand, star back left hand, heart, flags, crown, and bust of woman left forearm. Sentenced at Bromley Petty Sessions, 22nd May, 1911, to 12 months' hard labour under the 7 Sec., Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871, and whilst undergoing this sentence, he was certified as insane, and sent to the Kent County Asylum on the 18th January last, but escaped 23rd inst., and the Medical Superinten- dent reports that McCoy shows no signs of insanity. LANCASHIRE. 23.— B u r n I e y ( County). — CHARLES BERTRAND, Office No. 702- 97, Cases 71, 10th, and 25, 17th February, 1911; not now wanted. 24.— Manchester ( City).— For conspiracy— JOSEF WINZEN, age 55, height 5 ft. 7 ins., hair ( turning grey) sandy, moustache grey, wears rimless glasses, wearing raugh dark grey overcoat with patent seamed shoulders, bowler hat, carried a combined stick and umbrella. A manufacturer, aative of Hanover, Linden, Germany. It is ex- pected that he will endeavour to leave the country for the Continent. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. SOMERSETSHIRE. 28.— Flax Bourton ( County).— For obtain- ing at Winford, 6th inst., a brougham and gelding, by a worthless cheque, drawn on Farrow's Bank, Ltd., Derby— CHARLES WILLIAM P. GALE, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion ruddy, hair sandy, large nose, red face, ( blotchy J, clean shaven, slightly bow legged, swaggering gait, of horsey appearance; dress, fawn- oolour overcoat, brown leather leggings, bowler hat, long green mackintosh, large grey cap. His last address known is in France, and it is believed he will shortly return to England. Supposed accompanied by A MAN ( not wanted) age 32, height 5 ft. 1\ ins., complexion fresh, oval features, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes grey. Warrant issued. Warrant withdrawn. 33.— Sheffield ( City).- For stealing a cowhide and two sheepskins.— TOM HOPKINSON, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaven; dress, navy blue suit, dark overcoat, laced boots1, bowler hat. A butcher, native of Rawmarsh. Warrant issued. 34.— Sheffield ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences—' WILLIAM HUNT, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion pale, hair sandy, moustache dark; dress, grey jacket and vest, fawn colour breeches, brown leg gings and boots, fawn colour waterproof overcoat, soft collar and tie. A butcher, native of Kirton in- Lindsey. Believed to have been recently dis- charged from Lincoln Prison after serving 12 months. Warrant issued. 35.— Sheffield ( City).— For stealing clothing and money.— STEPHENSON, alias JOHN BARGH, LOWE, and FRISBY, etc., age 38 height 5 ft. 5J ins., complexion fresh, hair grey . going bald), eyes grey; dress, black jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, dark blue cap. labourer, native of Sheffield. Has been convicted at Chesterfield, Rotherliam, Nottingham, and Derby Assizes. Warrant issued. SUSSEX ( East). ( Borough).— Remanded, PROPERTY STOLEN. ESSEX. 39.— Chelmsford ( County).— 19th inst., at the Races, at Little Leighs, a valuable egg- shape pearl pin; a pair of field glasses in black leather case, " Zest" thereon. 22nd inst., by burglary, at Broomfield, a small black leather purse, £ 1 lis. 0d., and a quantity of old coins ( silver) with holes therein, viz.: 3 fourpenny pieces, 1 diam, 1 Italian, 1 French, 1 Jubilee 4s. piece, 1 King Edward Is., 1 King George do.; 1 George I. halfpenny; 1 do. II. half- penny; 3 George I. pennies; 1 dated 1762, and 4 pennies. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. HAMPSHIRE. 40.- Aldershot ( County).— inst., at Rotherwick, a light grey overcoat, with light stripes, " Jackson, Reading " on tab, band at back with two buttons, half band at bottom of each sleeve, fastened with two buttons. Suspicion is attached to A MAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., face pock marked, hair and moustache sandy, no6e has been broken, rather deaf; dress, old brown overcoat, blue trousers, tied with string below knees, dark cap. A labourer, native of Tadley. 41— Aldershot ( County).— 18th inst., a new grey costume, silk Paisley collar; 1 navy blue costume; 1 lady's felt hat, crushed strawberry colour, pheasant's feathers in front; 1 white flannelette night dress; 1 pair corsets, W. B. make; 2 pairs glace kid shoes, size 5, patent leather toe caps; 1 pair black stockings; 1 black purse, con- taining 5s.; 1 new brown brief bag; 1 dress basket with brown straps, about 30 by 18 ins.; 1 black ebony hair brush and comb; 1 lady's gold demi- hunter watch ; 1 gold bangle set turquoise; 1 lady's gold buckle ring, set diamond and 2 rubies; and about £ 1 10s. 0d., by a WOMAN, age 24, height 5 ft 2J ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, long violet colour coat, greenish tweed skirt, the stolen shoes and hat. I or obtaining money by a forged and altered Post Office Savings Bank deposit book, also by forged and altered Post Office Money Orders— HENRY EDWARD CLARKE KING alias DENNISON, WILLIAMS SMITH NOTICE. one for £ 3 or £ 4 more than the amount for which it was issued, and then induces hotel keepers or tradesmen to cash the same.
