POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1912. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ( 5s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may bo, 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. VOL. XXIX., No. 2944. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should bt prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows: — ( a) All persons coming within Sections 5, 7, or 8, of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( b) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one months imprison- ment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. { c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one months imprisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. Bankruptcy offences. Being found on enclosed premises. Breaking into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Burglary. Cattle stealing. Coining. Conspiracies of all descriptions. Embezzlement. Entering with intent to commit a felony. Extortion by threats. Felonious wounding. Forgery. Fraud.' Frequenting. Horse stealing. Housebreaking. Importuning male persons to commit un- natural offences ( Vagrancy Act, 1898, Sec. 1, par. b). Indecent assault on female. Larceny. Mental degenerates. Obtaining goods and money by false pre- tences. Possessing housebreaking tools. Procuration of women and girls. Prostitution, living on proceeds of ( Vagrancy Act 1898, Sec. 1, para. a). Receiving. Robbery. Sacrilege. Sheep stealing. Shopbreaking. Suspected person. Unlawful possession. Uttering counterfeit coin. Warehousebreaking. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been previously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or convictions if possible, also the No. published in the List of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1 — C Division.— For stealing, 18th ult., ( by trick), a two seater 12 h. p. Adler motor car, L. N. 8202, painted creamy white, fine line green, trimmed green hide, black leather hood, Cromwell wind screen, scuttle dash— GERALD BENSON, alias MICHAEL JOSEPH ROCHE, Office No. S. 134389 ( for description and photograph see case 37, 23rd ult.). Is touring the Provinces with the above car and may endeavour to dispose of same. 2. - H Division.— For embezzling £ 3 5s. 6d. — GEORGE HENRY WALKER, age 33, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion pale, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, very prominent forehead, splay feet; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat. A native of East Ham. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For stealing £ 3 3s. 4d„ 4th inst.— HARRY MONTAGUE WEISBLATT, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, blotchy, hair black, eyes dark, prominent chin, walks erect, jerky gait; dress, light striped suit, bowler hat. A native of Mile End, London. May endeavour to leave the country. 4.— R D i V i S i O n •— For obtaining £ 8 bv a worthless cheque on the London and Provin- cial Bank— HORACE WILLIAM TAPSON, alias WILLIAM TAPSON, Office No. S. 35559 ( see Illustrated Circular 80, figure 16), age 36, height 5 ft. 6J ins., complexion sallow, hair ( thick and curly) dark brown, eyes hazel, two small moles right cheek; dress, fawn colour mackintosh, grey cycling suit and cap, white silk collar and tie, brown leggings, lace boots. Warrant issued. b.— S Division•— For embezzling 19s., 23rd ult.— JAMES BASS, age 17, height 5 ft. 8 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, walks rather badly, slovenly appearance; dress, dark blue jacket and trousers, dark vest, grey cap, torn at side of peak, lace boots. A native of London. Has been a sailor. Had in his posses- sion a bicycle and a seaman's discharge book. Warrant issued. 6.— Y Division.— For embezzling £ 1 2s. lOd. between 16th November, 1911, and 23rd Janu- ary last.— HARRY GILES, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fair, hair light, eyes ( full) blue, shuffles right foot when walking; dress, grey jacket suit, black bowler hat. A native of Poplar, Lon- don. Warrant issued. 7.— Y Division.— For obtaining money and goods by a worthless cheque, drawn on the London & Provincial Bank, New Southgate branch. — ARTHUR CHARLES BROOKS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., stoops slightly, complexion ruddy, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, rather deaf, well educated; dress, blue serge suit, light rain- proof overcoat, black hard felt hat or cap. A builder. May be found at Gorleston, Norfolk, Southampton or Aldershot. Has with him a new bicycle. Warrant issued. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings between 14th and 20th ult., a steel combination square ( recovered).— FREDERICK HYDE, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, peculiar squint in eyes. A driller; native of Man- chester ; usually employed at motor works. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. CHESHIRE. 9.— AHrincham ( County).— Far stealing, 20th ult., a small gas cooker and tube; 2 plates, gold and blue; 2 do. green and gold; 6 white handled table knives; 6 do. forks; 1 bolster cover; 1 picture of a woman in Oxford frame; 4 post card pictures, wooden frames; 2 brass candlesticks, ivy leaf and frog thereon; 1 black melton overcoat, vertical pockets, three quarter length— MAUD 6 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. A native of Broadheath, Althrincham — WILLIAM JENKINS, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, hair ( very long) dark brown, clean shaven, eyes weak, narrow face, wears glasses with strong steel frame; dress, blue serge jacket, dart brown vest, black and wfnte plaid breeches, leggings. Supposed a native of Birmingham. Has travelled with a van for the Stello Metal Polish Company, Liverpool; also sells scented saw dust in envelopes as perfumed floral sachet. Warrant issued. Sutherland, Altrincham. 10.— CrGWe ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings, and 3s. by false pretences 8th and 9th inst.— FRED HARRIS ( supposed false), age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark, very thick in front, moustache ( slight) light, eyes brown, long crooked nose, sores inside right forearm, bandages both legs; supposed suffering from venereal disease; dress, dark striped jacket suit, hard felt hat, broad brim, soft collar, dark green tie, dark blue muffler. He represented that his father was about to set him up in cycle- repairing business. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. CUMBERLAND. 11.— Kendal ( County).— For stealing, 18th or 19th December, 1911, a bicycle ( recovered).- HARRY WATSON ( supposed false), age 26, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion rather sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaven; dress, dark jacket suit with grey stripes, blue tie, green cap, old brown boots. A labourer; supposed native of Cumber- land. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Notman, County Police, Kendal. DENBIGHSHIRE. 12.— Denbigh \ County).— For stealing a bicycle at Llandyrnog, 6th ult.— GEORGE ROB- INSON, alias FRED COOKE, age 30 to 34, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, woman and pierced heart right forearm, muscle of right arm injured; dress, brown coat and vest, cord trousers, grey cap, dark tie. A tramping painter. Supposed a native of Wooton, Beds. Convicted of larceny at Ludlow in 1908. He sold the machine at Heswall, near Birkenhead, on 10th ult. Photograph can be seen on applica- tion. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Woollam, Denbigh. DERBYSHIRE. 13.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For ob- taining credit by fraud between 20th and 25th ult. J. ROBSON, alias ROBINSON, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., hair light brown, clean shaven; dress, dark jacket suit, dark overcoat, cap. He called upon tradesmen, stated he was organising a benefit concert in aid of a man unable to work through injury. Canvassed for trade advertise- ments to be shewn on the programme, then ordered a number of programmes and tickets to be printed, which he sold, and decamped, 28th ult., a few hours before the concert was announced to commence. May be accompanied by a woman ( not wanted) and a child age 4 months. they obtained deposits, but failed to deliver. Believed wanted elsewhere. Warrants issued. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 16.— Gloucester ( County).-* For house- breaking 2nd inst., and stealing a lady's metal watch, long black cord guard attached, and a black- handled table knife.— GEORGE GALLY, alias GARRY, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown; dress, morning coat, light trousers, nailed boots, nearly new, striped or plaid cap. Appearance of a farm hand. Recently discharged from Wandsworth Prison. Warrant issued Information to Gloucester. ^ Bristol the Deputy Chief Constable, \( City).— For stealing a clock and 2 umbrellas ( recovered).— FRANK FIELD, alias FRANK HAROLD BROMF1ELD, age 48, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes grey; dress, dark suit, light mackintosh, bowler hat. A chemist or dentist; native of Worcester. Previously convicted at Nant- wich, Longton, Newport, Mon., and Bath. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 18.— Bristol ( City).— For [ embezzling £ 21; 5th inst.— WALTER THOMAS MATHEWS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., thin features, hair light brown, no eye brows or lashes, clean shaven, eyes weak, bad teeth, stammers, peculiar gait; usually wears a blue suit, light rain coat, black tie, bowler hat, watch in wrist strap. A native of Wandsworth, London. Is fond of roller- skating. Was employed by the Provident Clothing Supply Company, Ltd. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. with striking machines, ball throwing, etc., at Fairs or Market Places. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness. Warrington ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false nretences, between 22nd and 24th ult.— JOHN BURROWS ( supposed false), age 24, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven, thick bottom lip, protrudes, eyes grey or blue; dress, brown striped overcoat, belt at back, light grey lounge suit, brown cap, blue tie, wore pin made of the centre of a farthing, and a gold signet ring with initials " J. B." thereon. He engaged lodgings, stated he was employed on the railway erecting automatic fog signals, and would be in Warrington for nine weeks. Warrant issued. MONTGOMER YSHIRE. 26— Newtown ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences.— WILLIAM DAVIES, age 70, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair grey, left hand amputated at wrist and has an iron hook. Stated that he travelled for a Chester firm of booksellers and printers. Last heard of at Car- marthen on 12th January last. Supposed native of Ruthen, Denbighshire. Warrant issued. Chief Constable, Borough DORSETSHIRE. 14.— Poole ( County).— For embezzlement— — JOHN CARTER, age 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache dark. Has been employed as a Scotch draper. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. ESSEX. 15.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing 10s., 11th December, 1911, and attempted larceny, 28th December, 1911, respectively— ROGERS, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark, thin face, front upper teeth artificial and badly fitted; wearing long brown mixture coat, tight- fitting brown worsted muffler, brown knitted cap, fits closely over ears, dark woollen gloves, lace boots— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 ins., hair and moustache dark, may be clean shaven, splay feet; wearing brown coat with astrachan collar. They lived together in furnished rooms, called upon domestic servants, solicited orders for photographic enlargements, returned a few days later with proofs, then asked for orders for frames, for which HER TFORDSHIRE. 19 - St. Albans ( City). — CHARLES WILLIAM CRICHTON, described in case 16, 8th inst., has been identified as Charles William Crichton, Office No. S 117052, age 31, height 5 ft. 10£ ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; a groom; female and flower tattooed back right forearm, female and snake back left forearm. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Albans. KENT. 20.— Cranbrook ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 10s. 0d., by a worthless cheque on Chartered Bank, India and Australia and China, 32 Bishops- gate Street Within, E. C.— THOMAS FIELDEN, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fresh, haii- and eyes ( small) dark, cheeks flushed, of smart appearance; dress, dark blue overcoat, blue serge jacket and vest, grey trousers, bowler hat. Late of Finchley, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. 21 Sitting bourne ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a cheque for £ 57 14s. 10d., and fraudently converting same to his own use.— WILLIAM HENRY McCUDDEN, age 48, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion ruddy, hair ( nearly bald) and eyes grey; dress, blue- grey suit, heavy greenish over coat, strapped cuffs, strap at back. Warrant issued. 22,— Sittingbourne ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Milton Union.— GEORGE HENRY HAMBROOK, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion dark, hair brown; dressed as a bargeman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crowhurst, Sittingbourne. 23.— Rochester ( City).— For absconding 11th inst. from H. M. Borstal Institution, Borstal, — FRANK CARR, Office No. S. 126915, age 17 height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown eyes grey; dress black cord sleeve vest, blue navy jumper, moleskin trousers, dark tweed cap, blue grey flannel shirt, red striped stockings, hob nailed boots. After his escape he broke into a house and stole the clothing and 2 watches. Sentenced at the Bolton Sessions, 26th October, 1910, to 3 years at the Borstal Institution for warehousebreaking. Information to the Chief Constable, Rochester NORFOLK. 21.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences ( worthless cheque)— CLIFFORD ERNEST GARRETT, age 43 ( looks 50), height 5 ft. ins., rather thick set, complexion sallow, hair very dark, tinged with grey, moustache ( believed heavy) dark, turning grey, eyes brown, Jewish appearance, abscess scar back of neck, cut scar 3rd finger left hand; wearing soft round black felt clerical hat, light jacket and dark overcoat. A native of Great Yarmouth. Formerly a school teacher at Colton, Norfolk, but lately carried on business in this City as an Estate Agent, under the style of " Messrs. C. E. Garrett k Co., Ltd." Absconded, 25th ult., booking from here by the 10.25 p. m. train for Liverpool Street, ticket No. 9995, 3rd single. He is probably in possession of cheque books on local branches of the following banks:— London City and Midland, Capital and Counties, National Provincial and Barclay's. He interviews the manager of a Bank, informs him he is expecting to receive a deposit note for a large amount, with which he will open an account; then requests that he be supplied with a cheque book, which he invariably receives, but the account is never opened. M — Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For horsestealing, 28th ult.— DANIEL BROPHY, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, flags, faith, hope, and charity right forearm, ship, lighthouse, woman's head and anchor left forearm; dress, dark brown jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, grey cap, red muffler, clogs. A native of Rochdale. Generally employed SOMERSETSHIRE. 28.— Bath ( City).— For stealing a lady's gold ring, set two large diamonds, and large square emerald in centre; 1 do., set 5 diamonds; 1 do., set large square sapphire; 1 do. ( signet), with N. engraved thereon; 1 gold safety pin brooch, fox head; 1 do., large turquoise in centre; 1 do., small do.; 1 do., pearls do.; 1 do. do., and gold spray; 1 small enamel watch and brooch, with girl's head and shoulders in pansy colourings, bluey- purple; 1 heartrshaped diamond brooch, with emerald in centre; 1 gold bar brooch, set 5 dia- monds ; 1 turquoise and pearl drop pendant; 1 coral drop pendant, and coral earrings; 1 paste and white sapphire pendant; 1 St. George and the Dragon pendant, in pearls, rubies, sapphires and emeralds; 1 amethyst and gold pendant; 1 gold chain and pendant in one, with 4 turquoise in centre, and one small drop turquoise; 1 large dull silver and paste pendant and chain; 1 diamond and pearl pendant, with platinum chain, with pin for making into brooch; 1 turquoise matrix bracelet; 1 paste and emerald bracelet; 1 heavy gold horse- shoe spring bracelet, with platinum nails; 2 imitation pearl necklaces; 3 gold neck- chains; 1 gold locket with photograph of a man inside; 1 gold chain purse, with long gold chain; 1 black jet drop ear- rings; 1 emerald and pearl drop earrings, very old- fashioned, in heavy gold mounts; 1 pair of pearl and paste earrings, to screw in; 1 miniature gold frame, with child on one side, and twins on the other, with antique chain.— JANET WESTALL, alias JANET STONE and JULIA S. ROUSSELL, Office No. 503- 00 ( see Illustrated Circular No. 84, figure 32 and Case 36, POLICE GAZETTE, 11th Aug., 1911), age 51, height 4 ft. 10 ins., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair and eyes grey, bad teeth ( 2 artificial in front of upper jaw); dress, black coat, skirt and veil, small black round straw hat, black bow left side, turned up all round; some- times wears dark grey jacket. She took lodgings in a poor part of the city and advertised exten- sively as a thoroughly experienced dressmaker. LANCASHIRE. 29 — Liverpool ( City).— Escaped from cus- tody after being arrested for shopbreaking— ALEXANDER HENDERSON HALL, alms rose and butterfly back of left forearm ; dress, blue serge jacket, low cut vest, dark trousers, blue woollen muffler, tweed cap. Is a special reservist METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 32.— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For conspiracy, procuring, aiding and abetting persons to commit offences under Sec- tion 51 of the Malicious Damage to Property Act 1861— CIIR1STABEL PANKHURST, age about YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 80.— Hull ( City).— For obtaining £ 35 by false pretences— W. H. COULSON, alias JAMES SPIERS, Summerhill, Turnbull, Office No. 1859- 11, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fair, well built, smart athletic figure, hair light brown, eyes blue, clean shaven; long cut scar across forehead, long scar left cheek, extending from corner of stating that he was the well- known player, W. H. Coulson, of the Durham City Club, County and International Teams, and was desirous of going over to the Northern Union. He also stated that he was able to procure the services of another prominent player, and accompanied two of the Directors to Newcastle to open negotiations. 30, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark; usually dresses neatly.
