All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted tn one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars at to stolen property will b<• likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 0, Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of • police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the ease may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which catisis particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all eases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issw should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. Tliry must be clcarly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must br in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. He writes to West End firms from Aldershot on note paper bearing the crest of the Royal Field Artillery, personating a Lieut. Benson. Warrant issued. o.— P Division.— For obtaining by false pretences, a suit of clothes; 1 pair of boots, 1 brown leather dressing bag; and £ 4— FREDER- ICK GEORGE SMITH, age 34, height 5 ft 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes grey, several front teeth deficient, anchor, crosed flags, and dog's head right forearm, female and heart left forearm, in blue ink; dress, blue jacket, dark trousers and overcoat, grey mixture cap, red tie, brown shoes. BERKSHIRE. 6.— A b in g d O n ( County).— Particulars relating to JOHN ROWNTREE, Case No. 5, 24th November, 1911, cancelled. A man giving the name of John O'Connor, alias Frank Frod, was at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 6th inst., sentenced to 4 years' penal servitude, and the offence at Abingdon was taken into consideration. 7.— CI ewer ( County).— For stealing from her lodgings, 12th inst., a pair of lace boots, size 5, lined red satin; 1 green leather purse containing 8s.— — BRADLEY, age about 63, height about 5 ft. 4ins., complexion fresh, hair white, eyes dark, very plausible manner; crress, black coat and skirt, black bonnet with bow, brown muff and fur, wearing the stolen boots. She obtains charitable contribu- tions by representing herself to be the widow of a colour- sergeant of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holdine. Clewer. 8.— Windsor ( Borough).— For embezzling 12s. 0| d.— JOHN A. BAILEY, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., clean shaven, large nose; a butcher, has been employed at Wokingham and Staines. May seek employment at stables; absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. 9.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 30th ult.— A. R. BURNEY, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fair, plausible manner, of good address; wearing dark clothes and light cap. Represented that he was instructed to take a furnished house for three gentlemen, and on coming to terms demanded monev as commission. See Crses 29, 26th ult., 15 and" 71, 2nd inst. Warrant issued. CARNARVONSHIRE. 10.— Carnarvon ( County).— For stealing £ 13 from the porters' room at the Union Work- house, 5th inst.— JOHN ALBERT EDWARDS, age 55, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, prominent nose, red ; dress, dark grey suit ( trousers much too long), dark brown overcoat, with strap at back, muffler, light brown cap, heavy boots, underclothing marked " Carnar- von Union." He was admitted to the Workhouse on 21st August, 1911, and was employed as clerk. A native of Cefn, Ruabon, Denbighshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffith, Carnarvon. DERBYSHIRE. 11 — Ilkeston ( County).— For stealing £ 1 at West Hallam, 29th ult.— R. GREEN, alias MARTIN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion dark, eyes dark, hair black ( thick and wavy at back), clean shaven, appearance of an actor; dress, long dark grey overcoat with belt at back, dark trousers, grey tweed cap, with very large peak, large green scarf with mixture of white at ends. Is accompanied by a woman ( supposed his wife) and three children. He works in con- junction with a man ( not wanted) age about 35, height 5 ft. 11 ins. to 6 ft., complexion very fresh, hair light brown, clean shaven; dress, dark striped suit, cap, bow tie. They canvassed for photograph enlargements, and have been lodging together with the woman and children in Derby, which place they left 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daybell, Ilkeston. 12 — Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 10th inst., a leather purse con- taining 30s., also for obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— Licence holder, JOHN BROWN, alias BARGH, GLOSSOP, STOKES, & c., Office No. 1824- 07, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, scar left side of forehead. A collier, native of Whittington Moor, Nr. Chesterfield. Has been convicted at Chesterfield ( County), Nottingham ( County), Rotherham, Stafford and Wakefield. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DURHAM.' 13.— West Hartlepool ( County)— For abducting a girl age 13 years, 29th ult.— ALFRED HALL, alias PONTY and GARDNER, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fair, i hair brown, ragged moustache light, eyes grey, flat 1 nose, slight mark in centre, right ankle has been broken, limps; dress, dark jacket and vest, green trousers, dark grey overcoat, blue serge cap, dark blue scarf, lace boots, usually carries a stick with crook handle. A ship's fireman, native of Hartle- pool ; is known to have sailed from London, Cardiff, and Barry docks. Warrant issued. Description of girl, age 13, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes ( 1 blue, 1 brown), abscess scar about the size of a florin under chin; dress, dark grey skirt, with black stripes, and row of braid one inch wide around bottom, dark brown blouse with blue stripes and dots, black velvet hat with black band, light three- quarter length coat, lace boots. A labourer, native of Moreton, Cheshire. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 15.— Gloucester [ County).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences— ROBERT BONCEY, Office No. S. 36742, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache light, waxed at ends, dresses well. Case No. 16, 21st June, 1911, cancelled. 17.— Southampton ( Borough).— For larceny ( lodgings)— CARLO MOLINARI, alias HER- TERICH, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., drooping shoulders, abscess scars both sides of neck, can speak several languages fluently; dress, light brown tweed suit, fawn colour mackintosh, bowler hat, or light cap, lace boots or shoes. HEREFORDSHIRE. 18.— Bromyard ( County).— For embezzle- ment— THOMAS WHITEHURST, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 5J ins., complexion pale, hair brown, moustache light brown; dress, brown mixture suit, with small red stripes, grey cap, strong boots. A carter or farm labourer, supposed a native of Alderly Edge, Cheshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Groves, Bromyard. 19.— Hereford ( Citf/).— For obtaining 2s. and 3s., by false pretences, 18th and 19th ult. respec- tively— WILLIAM BISHOP, alios WILLIAM PHILLIPS, EVAN JENKINS, and SCHEMER, age 67, height 5 ft. 10J ins., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, moustache and eyes grey ( cast in one), stoops when walking; dress, old brown coat, rather long, brown vest, cord trousers, lace boots, all old. A carpenter, native of Orleton. He called upon a monumental mason, 18th ult, pro- duced a letter which he said he had received from a gentleman in the neighbourhood, authorizing him to order a headstone to the value of £ 10, and stating at the same time that his wife was dead, for whom he also ordered a headstone, whereupon he was given 2s. On the following day he again called to give the inscriptions for the headstones, when he was handed 3s. for his trouble, etc. Has been many times previously convicted of similar offences. KENT. 20.— Sovenoaks ( CW* 4*).— For obtaining goods and money by false pretences— FREDER- ICK ALBERT DENNISON, olios WILLIAMS, SMITH, and CLARKE- KING, Office No. 2781- 01 ( see also Case 22, 22nd December, 1911, and Illus- trated Circular No. 77, figure 12), age 37, height 5 ft. 11J ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, moustache brown, waxed at ends. Native of Lincoln. Smart appearance, and gener- ally carries a roll of paper or plans. Obtained a money order from the Post Office for Is. 3d., filled in same for £ 4 Is. 3d., purchased goods from a local tradesman, and received the change. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Sevenoaks. 21 — Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining a quantity of wearing apparel by false pretences, 20th ult.— E LANE, alias WARD, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, hair dark, turning grey, small moustache light, turns his toes inwards; dress, grey jacket, light trousers, brown canvas shoes, hard felt hat. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion dark, of Jewish appearance; and 2 children. During the past five months he carried on the business of a second- hand furniture dealer, ob- tained goods by representing that he had a cus- tomer for them. Absconded 29th ult. Has been employed by the Wesleyan General, and Liverpool Victoria Insurance Companies, and may seek similar employment. He is supposed to be well known at various seaside resorts on the south coast. Warrajit issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing £ 10, 3rd inst.— ARTHUR CALVERT, age 26, ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 or lHns., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curly) dark brown, clean shaven, eyes brown; dress, dark grey overcoat, belt at back, dark suit, check cap, lace boots. A reservist of the Scots Guards. Native of Dublin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crossley, Old Trafford. 23.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing £ 42 27th ult.— GEORGE DEANS, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 ins., good build, complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaven, prominent nose, square jaw, slightly bow legged. He was employed as manager in a mantle manufactuer's branch shop. May endeav- our to leave the country. 24.— Liverpool ( City). For obtaining £ 25 by false pretences from the Portuguese Consul, 6th inst.— JOAO AUGUST, a Portuguese, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 ins., ruddy cheeks, hair and mous- tache dark, eyes blue, takes short steps, speaks Spanish and French; dress, greenish suit, dark overcoat with velvet collar, white scarf, soft tweed hat. On 6th inst., the Consul received a telegram, handed in at Euston Station, purporting to have been sent by the Marquis de Soveral, asking the Consul to give his godson, who was in Liverpool, all the financial assistance he required. Later on August called upon the Consul representing him- self to be the person mentioned, and obtained £ 25. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 25.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For obtaining 6s., by false pretences, 13th ult.— A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 ins., stout build, com- plexion pale, full face, hair dark; wearing greenish grey ulster coat, fur collar and cuffs, black veil, hat with low crown, dark woollen gloves. She called upon shopkeepers, represented that she was authorized to appoint agents for a firm of sewing machine repairers, Manchester, and that the persons appointed would receive commission on all ordere. Warrant issued. 26.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 30th ult., a dark overcoat with grey stripes, velvet collar, and a pair of brown kid gloves— JAMES HAMNETT, alias BICKER- STAFFE, age 23, height 5 ft. 7| ins., complexion and eyes dark, hair and moustache dark brown, large burn soar right side of chest; dress, dark grey coat, blue serge trousers, dark muffler with green stripes, grey cap, new clogs. A collier, native of Fairgreen, Hanley, Staffs. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Helens. LINCOLNSHIRE. 27.— Boston ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences at Donington, 22nd December, 1911.— W. WARD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., rather slight build, hair ( frizzy) dark, clean shaven; wearing a long ligjht grey overcoat, dark grey cap, light lace boots; carrried a small camera with strap. He took photographs of several people, and promised to execute orders in about a week, obtained various sums of money, and gave receipts for same from an ordinary receipt book. Whilst in this district gave his address as " Meadow Gate, Bourne." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar. Boston. NORTH A MP TONSHIRE. 28.— Kettering ( County),— For obtaining £ 19 0s. 6d. by false pretences— SIDNEY LEA- WOOD, Office No. S. 123305, age 21, height 5 ft. 8J ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey ( cast in right eye and lid droops), of smart appearance, " Nellie" tattooed right arm. A ship's steward, and native of Ashby de la Zouch. May seek employment at a cheap auction mart or travelling theatre. Photograph on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hooper, Kettering. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 29.— Nottingham ( City).— For stealing £ 40, 31st ult.— OSCAR L'HOLLIER, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in6., slight build, square shoulders, complexion pale, rather blotchy, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) light, eyes grey, large absoen scar inside one wrist, addicted to drink, and habitually smokes cigarettes and pipe; speaki French fluently, and has slight foreign accent; wearing dark grey jacket suit, dark cap. He was employed as manager at a Wicker Works, and was entrusted with cheques on the National and Provincial Bank to draw amounts for business purposes; cashed a cheque for the above amount, receiving three £ 10 Bank of England notes, issued in London, Nos. 21438, 41453, and 66271, dated' 15th February, 1910, and £ 10. It is believed that he will endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 30.— Nottingham ( City).— For fraudulently obtaining credit, 21st November, 1911.— ELIZA- BETH KIRK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 ins., well built, complexion pale, full face, hair golden ( believed dyed), plaited on top of head; dressed in black velvet Princess robe. She took a shop on 6th November last, had billheads printed with E. Kirk, Draper, etc., thereon, wrote to various firms, and obtained from them a considerable quantity of general drapery goods. Absconded 30th December. It has been ascertained that on various dates the goods were packed in trunks, left at railway station cloak rooms, and taken away as " passengers luggage." Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 31.— Nottingham ( City).— For fraudulently obtaining credit, 17th ult.— R. WILLARD ( sup- posed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. llins., good build, complexion pale, hair brown, clean shaven, of good address; dress, dark suit, brown blanket cloth overcoat, bowler hat. On 4th ult., he took a house, on a yearly tenancy, advertised ii » a local paper, viz.: " Gentleman returning from abroad has £ 1,500 to £ 2,000 to invest in a good business." Entered into negotiations with a solici- tor and an accountant with a view to investing £ 4,000 in a business here, and by giving them as references obtained from firms furniture and other goods, afterwards attempted to transfer the ten- ancy of the house and dispose of the furniture. Absconded 8th inst. He spoke of having been to America, and speculated in aviation; was accom- panied by a woman ( not wanted), age about 35, complexion pale, hair light. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Nottingham. OXFORDSHIRE. 32— Henley- on- Thames ( County).— for stealing ( bailee) £ 12.— HERBERT CALLIS WINGFIELD, age 26 to 27, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion pale, hair lieht brown, clean shaven, eyes blue, north country accent, peculiarity in eyes when speaking; dress, long grey overcoat, grey breeches and black leggings, grey cap; carried a black portmanteau. May be found at skating rinks performing as a professional skater. A clerk, native of Sheffield. See Case No. 55, 12th August, 1910. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Porter, Henley. 33.— Banbury ( Borough).— For stealing from a factory, 30th ult., 12 children's knickers ( 7 recov- ered), trimmed embroidery, trade mark, " a col- legian's head " and Oxford underclothing, made of Horrockses long cloth, No. 463, size 2 stamped on each ; 1 white knitted muffler, fastens with button; 1 black and white silk and wool scarf, with fringe at ends, about 2 yards long, 8- 12 ins. wide; 1 white cloth muffler, flowers worked thereon; 1 lady's fawn colour mackintosh, stitched around bottom, also straps for fixing on bicycle; 1 " Corsair" bicycle lamp, round top, hinge off front, makers Powell and Hanmer, Birmingham.— WJLLIAM TOONE, alias WATERFIELD age 22, height 5 ft, 3J- ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, I. L. M., dagger, bell, woman, horse shoe, soldier, clasped hands right forearm, I. S. K., lock, rose, and clasped hands left forearm; dress, dark suit and cap. A native of Liecester. Was riding an old rusty bicycle. May be found at common lodging or low public houses. Information to the Head Constable, Banbury. STAFFORDSHIRE. 34 — Stoke - on - Trent ( Borough).— For failing to report— ARTHUR SUTTON, Office No. 566- 02, age 39, height 5 ft. 101 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar bottom lip, " Polly" tattooed left forearm; sentenced Chester Assizes 9th July, 1908 to 3 years' penal servitude for burglary.
