N' OTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct. PERSONS WANTED. AUCKLAND.—] st instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Remuera," William Snellgrove, age thirty- three, height 5 ft. lin., greaser, native of London, fair com- plexion, brown hair and eyes. Absconded from the vessel at Lvttelton on the above- mentioned date. A reward of £ 2 is offered for his apprehension. AUCKLAND.— 8th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Remuera," Lawrence Sinclair, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 10 in., quartermaster, native of Scotland, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, " L. S." on left forearm. A reward of £ 2 will be paid for his apprehension. AUCKLAND.— 8th instant, on warrant for failing to pro vide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, Archibald Grandison. age twenty, height 6 ft., builder or carpenter ; native of New Zealand, broad build, black hair, sallow complexion, clean- shaved, brown eyes, long thin face, false teeth ; usually wears navy- blue 6uit and hard black hat. He is supposed to have gone to Sydney under an assumed name. Complainant, Hilda Erkila. AUCKLAND.— 8th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for one month in default of pay- ing £ 5 13s. fine and costs for a breach of the Licensing Act, Thomas Desmond, alias Fitzroy, age fifty four, height 5 ft. 5 in., labourer, native of England, stout build, fresh complexion, blue eyes, grey hair and whiskers, bald on top of head. AUCKLAND. — 17th October last, on warrant of com- mitment to Mount Eden Prison for three days in default of paying £ 1 8s. fine and costs for assaulting his wife, George Carroll, age forty one, height 6 ft., land agent, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair, brown eyes ; fond of drink ; poorly dressed. He is supposed to have gone to Helensville district. ( See next paragraph.) AUCKLAND.— 10th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for seven days in default of paving £ 2 10s. fine and costs for procuring liquor, George Car- roll, age forty- one, height 6 ft., land agent, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair, brown eyes ; fond of drink ; poorly dressed. AUCKLAND.— 27th October last, on warrant of commit- ment to Mount Eden Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 2 16s. costs for medical treatment while in custody for drunkenness, Phillip Hellon, age thirty- one, height 6 ft., fireman, native of England, medium build, sallow com- plexion, dark hair, blue eyes. AUCKLAND. —- 7th instant, for escaping from Rotoroa Inebriates Home, Maurice Brown and Cyril James Braithwaite. First: Age thirty- eight, height 5 ft. 9. J in., labourer and shearer, native of Ireland, strong build, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, blue eyes, scar under right cheek; clothing numbered " 59." A reward not exceeding £ 2 will be offered for his apprehension. AUCKLAND.— 1st ultimo, that a summons may be served on him for committing a grossly indecent act, George Ross, age thirty, height 5 ft. 8 in., carpenter, native of England, medium build, dark hair, grey- blue eyes, small dark mous- tache ; dressed in dark- blue serge suit and hard black hat. AUCKLAND.— 6th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the adequate maintenance of his wife and four children, Francis John Bell, age twenty- eight, height 5 ft. 4 in., butcher, native of Scotland, strong build, fresh oomplexion, brown hair, square jaws, olean- shaved, one finger ( supposed left index) missing, speaks with Scotoh ac- cent; a heavy cigarette- smoker ; fond of drink; dressed in navy- blue suit and bowler hat. He is supposed to have gone to Sydney. Complainant, Isabella Bell, Burnley Terrace, Dominion Road. HUNTLY.— 26th ultimo, on warrant for forgery and uttering, John Symond ( probably fictitious); age twenty- four, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., native of New Zealand, half- caste Maori, slim build, long hair ( curly in front), thin features, clean - shaved, smart appearance, speaks good English ; dressed in green- tweed suit and cap. Offender forged a cheque for £ 9 5s. purporting to have been drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Hamilton, by S. Carter, and uttered the same to William Collins, storekeeper. RAKAUEOA.— 17th ultimo, that he may be compelled to pay arrears due for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, James Gunn Leckie, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 8in. or9in., labourer, native of Australia, stout build, square pugihstio appearance, dark hair and complexion, olean- shaved, flat orooked nose, false upper teeth, small scar near one eye ; fond of boxing, and may be found round boxiDg- schools. He was employed on the railway- construc- tion works at Rakauroa, and is said to have left for Aus- tralia in July last. HAWERA. — 30th ultimo, on warrant for indecently assaulting Lizzie McRobbie, a child five years of age, Man, name unknown, age about forty, height about 5ft. 10in., supposed labourer, flushed face, had about three weeks' growth of beard, no moustaohe ; untidy appearance ; dressed in grey suit, dark- blue overcoat, and slouch hat. Offender enticed the child to King Edward Park, where he com- mitted the offenoe. LOWER HUTT. — 12th instant, on warrant for theft of £ 1 0s. 6d., the money of John O'Keefe, settler, Benjamin Norman Campbell, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, clean- shaved, very thin features, dark complexion, dark- brown hair; dressed in brown ooat and trousers, dark cap, and strong lace- up boots. Offender was employed by Mr. O'Keefe, who gave him the above money to purchase a postal note, which he failed to do. He also took away a bicycle, the property of complainant, described as having a 24 in. frame, plain clutch, rim- brakes, upturned handles, Brooks saddle. Of- fender may be identical with F. E. C. Wall, alias Camp- bell. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 159.) WELLINGTON.— 28th ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Arthur Ruff, age twenty- three, height 5 ft. 5 in., farm hand, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh com- plexion, black hair, clean- shaved ; dressed in brown- striped suit and black hat. He was heard of at Totara Flat ir. July last. Complainant, Rose Alice Lines, domestic, Wel- lington. WELLINGTON.— 13th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Remuera," James George Andrews, age thirty, height 5 ft. 8 in., A. B., native of England, soar on left side of chest. Harry Wilson, age forty- three, height 5 ft. 7 in., A. B., native of Canada, blue eyes, brown hair, fair oomplexion and moustache, anchor tattooed on left hand, and star on right hand. Robert Barley, age twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 10 in., A. B., native of England, blue eyes, brown hair, medium build, fresh complexion. A reward of £ 2 each will be paid for their apprehension. WELLINGTON.— 14th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Remuera," Daniel Santry, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 5| in., fireman, native of England, grey eyes, brown hair, fair complexion. Thomas Hewitt, age twenty- two, he'ght 5 ft. 3 in., trimmer, native of England, blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion " T. H." tattooed on right arm. A. E. Lake, age twenty- three, height 5 ft. 10 in., fireman, native of England, brown eyes and hair, three dots tattooed on left arm. William Watts, age forty, height 5 ft. 11 in., fireman, native of England, grey eyes, dark hair, fair complexion. Herbert Norcott, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 6J in., fireman, native of England, brown hair and eyes, fair complexion. A reward of £ 2 each will be paid for their apprehension. WELLINGTON.— 14th instant, on warrant for deserting from the s. s. " Ruahine,'' Frederick Allen, age twenty- eight, height 5ft. 11 in., A. B., native of England, fresh com- plexion, black hair, brown eyes, spot on right wrist. Charles R. D. Dyke, age twenty- nine, height 5 ft. 8 in., A. B., native of England, dark complexion, dark- brown hair, brown eyes, anohor, clasped hands, and horse- shoe tattooed on right forearm, two scars on left arm. Matthew Brown, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 7} in., A. B., native of England, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, " M. B. L. M." in heart tattooed on body ( what part not known). Charles Norton, age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 4 in., fireman, native of England, blue eyes, fair hair and complexion " C. Norton," and pot of flowers on right forearm. A reward of £ 3 each will be paid for their apprehension. WELLINGTONT— 13th instant, on warrant for failing to provide his wife, Jane Groth, 73 Hanson Street, with ade- quate means of support, Henry Jens Groth, age thirty- nine, height 5 in. 8in., labourer, native of Germany, stout build, fresh complexion, fair hair and moustache, blue eyes, prominent scar on left side of face ; dressed in blue suit and hard- felt hat. He follows Agricultural Shows as a wrestler and boxer, and was last heard of at the Oamaru Show. WESTPORT.— 12th instant, on warrant for being absent without leave from the barque " Mataura," Alvin Svan- beck, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 6 in., seaman, Russian Finn, fair complexion, square jaw, full face, clean- shaved, thick- set build, speaks very little English ; dressed in dark- tweed suit and oap, and a coloured shirt without collar. CHRISTCHURCH.— 11th instant, on warrant for theft of £ 4 0B. 9d., property of Barlow Bros., merohants, Cashel Street, Daniel Madden, age fifteen, height about 5 ft. 4in., messenger, native of New Zealand, thin build, fair complexion, good- looking, reddish hair; dressed in brown suit and cap. He is supposed to have come to Wellington. Total defalcations, £ 100. CHRISTCHURCH.— 11th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the adequate maintenance of his wife, John Bradley, alias David Blair, age fifty- one, height 5 ft. 2 in., gardener, native of Tasmania, strong build, ruddy com- plexion, small head, grey hair and eyes, thin face, reddish moustache, tattooed on left wrist, ships on forearms ; a heavy smoker; dressed in black suit and light- coloured felt hat or cap. He is supposed to have gone to Gisborne, en route to Auckland and Australia. Complainant, Emily Bradley, care of Mrs. Young, Leeston. CHRISTCHURCH.— 9th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the adequate maintenance of his wife and child, James Hallam, age thirty- one, height 5 ft. 7in. or 8 in., clicker, native of New Zealand, slim build, pale com- plexion, black ourly hair, blue eyes, small fair moustaohe, boil- marks on side of neok, stooping gait; dressed in navy- blue coat and vest, black- cloth trousers, green tie, and hard hat. He is supposed to have gone to Australia, via Bluff. Complainant, Grace Vastier Hallam, Munnings Place, Woolston. CHRISTCHURCH.— 31st October last, on warrant of com- mitment to Lyttelton Prison for forty- aight hours in default of paying £ 1 fine and costs . for a breach of his prohibition order, William Henry Norgate, age thirty- one, height 6 ft. lin., labourer, native of New Zealand, slim build, fair complexion, brown hair and moustache, blue eyes, sharp features, long nose, round shoulders ; fond of drink ; gene- rally dressed in dark- blue suit and black hard hat. DUNEDIN.— 11th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide his wife, Anna Metcalfe, and two ohildren with ade- quate means of support, Christopher Metcalfe, age fifty- one, height about 5ft. 10 in., groom and labourer, medium build, dark eyes and hair, thin dark moustache turning grey, bald in front, sallow complexion. He is sup- posed to have left for Wellington about September last, and may be keeping a billiard- room in some part of the Dominion. APPREHENSIONS, PERSONS FOUND, ETC. AUCKLAND.— Mrs. Glasson, alias Edith Maud Wat- terson, breaking and entering, has b9en arrested by Act- ing- Detective Halke and Constable Murphy, Auckland and Raurimu polioe, and remanded. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 557.) AUCKLAND. — William Cook, absentee from s. s. " Opawa," has been arrested by Constable Gourley, Queen Street Wharf police, and remanded. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 557.) AUCKLAND.— Anthony Hesse, default of fine and costs, has paid the amount due to the Dunedin police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 241.) WANQANUI.— Maria Jane Hake has been located at Rangiora by Constable W. Robertson. She is of weak intellect, and is not in a position to contribute towards the support of her illegitimate child. William Henry Hold, age twenty three, height 5 ft. 5£ in., officers' cook, native of England, light- brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, faint tattoo- marks on right forearm, on right hand, and left forearm. ABSCONDERS FROM INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS. • CHRISTCHURCH.— 12th instant, from licensed service with Mrs. Heasley, St. Albans, Christchurch, Maggie Jones, age nineteen, height 5 ft. 2 in., nurse girl, native of New Zealand, dark hair and complexion; supposed wearing brown hat and full- length light coat. She will probably attempt to return to Dunedin, where her mother resides. WINTON.— 26th ultimo, from licensed service with Wil- liam Malcolm, farmer, Gap Road, Charles E. Thomp- son, age sixteen ( appears about twenty), height 5 ft. 6 in., farm hand, native of New Zealand, stout build, sandy ourly hair, small eyes; dressed in dark- green- striped suit and dark oap, light- coloured shirt, and light boots. His parents reside at No. 75 Kingsley Street, Sydenham, Christchurch. Photograph filed in the Inspector's Office, Invercargill. MISSING. • DANNEVIRKE.— Since 24th April last, Charles Strong, age twenty- three, height 6 ft. 2 in., miner and labourer, native of England, strong build, fair complexion, light- brown hair, grey eyes, teeth decayed, medium nose, large scar on left arm. He was last heard of at No. 40 Welling- ton Street, Auckland. Inquiry by his mother, Ada E. Strong, Dannevirke. INQUEST. • PALMERSTON NORTH.— On 1st instant the body of a man, name unknown, was found in the Manawatu River at Foxton Heads, and cannot be identified. It was in an advanced stage of decomposition, and had probably been in the water a month. Description : Age about thirty- five, height 5ft. 9in., brown hair inclined to be ginger ( cut short except small tuft in front), heavy ginger moustache, two teeth in front upper jaw broken and decayed, medium to stout build, probably a labourer : dressed in greenish- tweed trousers aud vest, soft tennis- shirt, hlueish tie, heavy woollen underpants and singlet, light lace- up boots ( half- soled), heavy brown woollen socks, had no coat on ; large silver open- faced Waltham watch, No. 1254205, maker Wm. Ellery, stopped at 10.50, following numerals on inside case probably made by watchmakers repairing or cleaning watch, 1426, A. M. 451, M. 27584, H. 62000, 81; silver old fashioned snake- pattern chain worn from watch- pocket to button- hole, watch- key secured to watch- guard ; also in pocket two watch- keys^ and narrow piece of bone about 2 in. long. He was subsequently sentenced to four years' penal servitude for bigamy. It has been ascertained that he is not identical with George Michael, alias Jarburji Harji, referred to in Police Gazette, 1898, page 213, and 1899, pages 97 and 121. KALGOORLIE ( WESTERN AUSTRALIA).— A Bench warrant has been issued by Judge Ruth for the arrest of William John Leahy for failing to answer to his bail at the Kalgoorlia Cirouit Court on a oharge of breaking and enter- ing with intent to commit a crime, native of Victoria, age twenty- four, bank accountant, single, height 5 ft. 5 in., thin stooping build, long black straight hair, black eye- brows, fairly high straight forehead, brown eyes, small straight nose, close mouth, thin lips, pointed chin, small ears close to head, thin face, olean- shaved, quiet- spoken ; somewhat addicted to drink; keeps late hours; mixes amongst the sporting class and clerks ; dresses in a brown suit, sometimes flannel trousers, often no vest, leather belt, boater straw hat.
