POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2918 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 0. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not Irss rank than Superintendent; and if the name of sxich person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be, 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents r, stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on tin apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of thi act, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the nert issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on TI'< dnesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xrw Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Natives of Ber- mondsey, now believed in the provinces. A bricklayer, native of Southwark, London. 10.— P Division.— For obtaining goods bv false pretences— MAUD HATCH, alias SAN- DERS, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 ins, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes bluish grey; dress, black velvet skirt, braid down side, Saxe- blue, knitted three- quarter coat, small blue felt hat, turned- up brim, black velvet pillow muff. Stilling, East- leigh " on tab of jacket; and a rather dark green rainproof overcoat, one sleeve slightly torn, " Jas. Eathorne, Eastleigh" on tab — CLEMENT N. MATTHEWS, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins, complexion fresh, features rather pointed, hair ( curly) light, clean shaven, tattoo marks in red and blue ink on one arm, takes short steps, turns his feet inwards, stoops slightly, believed to be ruptured, an inveterate cigarette smoker; wear- ing the stolen overcoat and a green Alpine hat. CHESHIRE. 13.— Macclesfield ( County).— For stealing 9th ult, a horse, cart and harness ( recovered)— RICHARD BAILEY, age 38, height 5 ft. 4 ins.„ complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown; a rag gatherer and poacher, native of Macclesfield. Is well known in Cheshire, Derbyshire and Stafford-, shire. Warrant issued. 14 — Macclesfield [ County)— For obtaining food, lodgings and £ 1 bv false pretences, between 13th and 21st, ult.— MARGARET LA VINA BOWERS, age about 60, height 5 ft. 3 or4 ins, stout build, complexion fresh, hair grey, mark right side of nose; dress, black dress, with deep crape flounce at bottom, black bodice, trimmed crape, black man- tle, with silk ruffle inside collar, black kid gloves, carried a black silk umbrella, with silver- mounted FRIDAY, N O V E M B E R 24, 1911. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT (. continued)— crook handle. She took lodgings at a beer- house, represented that she had 30 head of cattle on a farm, and was going to consult a local solicitor as to her share of the farm, having been turned away by her step- son. Wigton ( County).— For carnally know- ing a girl under 16 years of age, at Newton Arlosli, 2nd October last— GEORGE CARRUTHERS, age 20, height 5 ft. 8 ins., stout build, complexion fair, round face, hair light brown, clean shaven, eyes grey, cut scar knuckle of left forefinger. A blacksmith, native of Newton Arlosli, absconded 28th ult., may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Veitch, Wigton. DENBIGHSHIRE. — Wrexham ( County).— For stealing, 25th ult., at Chirk a bicycle ( recovered at Bishop's Castle Shropshire)— THOMAS WILSON, age 22, height 5 ft. 8ins., hair light, clean shaven; dress, dark blue serge jacket and vest, grey trousers and cap, light lace boots, supposed a native of Motherwell, Lanark. May seek employment on farms; was accompanied by his wife ( not wanted), age 19 ( looks older), height about 4 ft. 10 ins., complexion sallow, end of nose slightly red, slovenly appearance, wearing long, rough, dark blue coat, black straw hat, trimmed ribrbon. Had with them an old- fashioned trunk, covered with wall- paper, and a brownish portman- teau. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Wrexham. Not now - wanted, warrant withdrawn. 20 - Cardiff ( City).— For stealing, 15tli August last, a Raleigh bicycle, No. 246014, black enamelled, red lines, 26 in. frame, upturned han- blebar, Bowden back brake, part of front brake missing, " Raleigh" transfer front tube, " Ken- nard " transfer back tube— HERBERT DAVIES, Office No., S. 105180, age 30, height 5 ft, 3J ins., complexion fresh, hair dark ( curly), eyes grey, dark brown moustache, artificial teeth, 2nd right finger amputated at first joint, tattooed X left upper arm; dress, brown jacket, navy blue trousers, dark cloth vest, red piping around edges, grey cap, white rubber collar. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 21.— Bristol ( City).-— For stealing from his lodgings, a dark green overcoat, strap at back, and a pair of grey worsted socks— CHARLES WOOD, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, turning grey, thin pointed nose, London accent; dress, dark brown jacket suit, green tie, bowler hat, lace boots, and the stolen overcoat. Appeared to have a good knowledge of the leather and boot trade, and stated he was employed by a leather merchant here. Left behind an old dark grey overcoat. Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Aldershot ( County).— Particulars, re- lating to ALBERT WHITING Case, No. 17, 14th April, FRANK GRAINGER and EDWARD WIGNALL, Case No. 20, 8th inst. Cancelled. 23.— Aldershot ( County).— For embezzling 3/-, 23rd ult.- WILLIAM EDWARD HOLMES, a groom or coachman, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 3 Ins., slight build, hair brown, clean shaven, long sharp nose; badly ruptured"; dress, dark suit, overcoat and cap, wearing dark leather puttie leg- gings and white tie. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davis, Aldershot. 21.— Alton ( County). - For obtaining by falsrf pretencs, at Kingsley, 24th ult., a dark chestnut hunter mare, rising 5 years, 15 hands, white blaze down face, long mane and tail, off hind fetlock white, slight mark centre of off knee, small light patch on mane near head— HARRY GRAHAM, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, round face, rather large nose; dress, blue serge suit, long blue melton over- coat, velvet collar, rather large violet tie, green, soft felt hat, light brown boots. — A MAN ( sup- posed) WALTER LONG, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion and hair dark, round face, rather large nose, dressed similar to Graham, ex- cept that he was wearing a grey cap; and — A MAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., com- plexion dark, clean shaven; dress, grey suit, dark overcoat, hard bowler hat; appearance of a groom. The owner advertised the jnare for sale, on 24th ult., he received a type written letter addressed from School Farm, Heckfield, Winchfield, Hants., asking when it would be convenient to see the animal, a wire was sent and Graham and the 3rd described called on 24th ult., agreed to take the mare, gave an open cheque for £ 1, and a post dated cheque for £ 29, on Simonds & Co., Bank, Basingstoke Branch, signed Harry Graham, the cheques were returned " refer to drawer." May have in his possession a cheque book containing cheque Nos. A 43206 to 43230. The lst and 2nd described men took lodgings at the Farm, 22nd ult., the third man had letters typed at Basing- stoke, Graham and Long ( supposed brothers) ar- rived 24th ult. and stayed till 28th ult., when they left with the mare and a bay gelding ( which had been obtained at Salisbury). KENT. 25.— Sevenoaks ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a piano— ARTHUR HOWE, alias CLIF- FORD, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft, 11 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair dark blown, clean shaven, eyes grey; dress, blue serge or grey suit, bowler hat or cap, light lace boots. He was em- ployed as a pianist at. a picture palace. Is be- lieved a pensioner of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crowhurst, Sittingbourne. 27.— Canterbury ( City).— For obtaining money by worthless cheques ( 4 charges) on London and South- Wetern Bank ( Fleet Street Branch), Nos. C132757 to C132800.— TWO MEN ( 1 gave name of A. L. Brown, age, 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion pale, hair and slight mous- tache light; wearing double- breasted black melton overcoat, black, hard, felt hat. 1 gave name Wil- liam J. Langley, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaven, eyes dark brown; wearing double- breasted black melton overcoat, black tie, kid gloves, and hard felt hat). They visited several tradesmen, purchased articles, tendered cheques in payment for same, and received the change. Warrants issued. Information to Chief Constable, Canterbury. 28.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 1 by a fictitious cheque— G. A. RUSSELL, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., stout build, com- plexion fresh, round face, hair and moustache light brown. Represented that he was an advance agent for a Life Insurance Company. Appears identical with MAN, Case No, 6, lst inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 29.— Abergavenny ( County).— For attemp- ted carnal knowledge of a girl, age 14 years— FRANK SMITH, age about 28, height about 5 ft., complexion and hair dark; dress, blue serge suit, tight fitting trousers, light grey cap, red and white tie, brown boots, supposed dark green mixture overcoat. A native of Turistall, Staffs. May seek employment as a baker, ostler or labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Davies, Abergavenny. RENFRE WSHIRE. 30. Paisley ( County).— For theft and fraud board and lodgings), 5th inst.— A MAN giving the name of Montgomerie, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaven, outer side lower lash of right eye slightly contracted, peculiar shaped mouth, upper teeth artificial, prominent flat chin, English dialect; dress, dark jacket ( clerical pattern) suit, trousers tight fitting, dark grey three- quarter length overcoat, patch pockets, with button fasten- ing, heavy lace boots; carried a small brown leather hand bag, represented that he was an organ tuner. Is also wanted in Kirkcudbrightshire and Ayr- shire. Warrant issued.
