The Police Gazette is a CONFIDENTIAL publication, and is issued for the information of members of the Police Force, and Officers engaged in the administration of justice, ONLY. WELLINGTON, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1911. OTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct PERSONS WANTED. • AVONDALE.— 16th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the adequate maintenance of his illegitimate child, Charles Mayall, age twenty- six, height 5 ft. 3 in., boot- maker and mental hospital attendant, supposed native of New Zealand, stout build, fair complexion, brown hair, clean- shaved. Complainant, Neva Winifred Stella Jenkins, 60 Howe Street. AUCKLAND.— 11th instant, ori warrant for forgery and uttering, W. Corbert. alias Charles Stanaway, age about twenty- six, height about 6 ft., sawmill hand, native of New Zealand, quarter- oaste Maori, very dark complexion, clean shaved; smart appearance ; stylishly dressed in blue- serge suit. Offender forged a cheque for £ 6 2s., which pur- ported to have been drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, by T. Coates in favour of W. Corbert, and uttered the same to David Robertson, storekeeper, Clevedon. There are other charges pending. He may be accompanied by Mrs. Harris, alias Stanaway, who is referred to in Police Gazette, 1911, page 429. AUCKLAND.— 8th instant, on warrant for breaking, entering, and theft, and attempted arson, Mrs. Glasson, ( probably fictitious), age about thirty- five, height about 5 ft. 3 in., sallow complexion, brown hair, wrinkled face, very quiet speech. Offender broke and entered the dwelling of Arthur John Cotterill, teacher, St. Mark's road, Remuera, stole a ladies' 18 ct. gold ring, claw- set with three diamonds and two rubies, inside initialled " A. J. C. ", and " J. F. S. " ; a band ring ( recovered) ; a gold bar brooch ; two bangles ( recovered); a navy- blue costume ( recovered) ; two white soft shirts ; a pair of ladies' lace- up shoes, size 4; a green - corduroy skirt; two pairs of pillow- slips; and a pair of fanoy pillow- shams : total value, £ 30: aud then set fire to two ward- robes. " Opawa," Hugh Nipple, age thirty seven, height 5 ft. 5 in., seaman, native of Liverpool, England, strong build, ruddy complexion, brown hair turning grey, blue eyes, grey moustache, fairly full face, hawks and butterfly on left hand, flowers on right hand. " Opawa," William Cook, age twenty- five, height 5ft. 8 in., seaman, native of Aberdeen, Scotland, slight build, ruddy complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, lantern jaws, clean- shaved. " Opawa," John Widmark, age thirty- three, height 5 ft. 7Jin., fireman, native of Stockholm, stiff build, pale fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, fair moustache, elapsed hands, Union Jack, dagger, heart, American eagle, and anchor on right arm, flower, clasped hands, and heart on left arm, emblem on left hand. " Opawa," John McLean, age twenty- four, height 5ft. 7 in., seaman, native of Durraon, slight build, round shoulders, ruddy complexion, drawn features, brown hair, blue eyes, olean shaved. QUEEN STREET WHARF ( AUCKLAND). — 15th instant, on warrant for being absent without leave from the foreign ship " Australia," Crozetta Autonis Ernesto, ag>> eighteen, height 5 ft. 3 in., seaman, native of Torino, fresii complexion, dark hair, round face; dressed in dark suit and soft- felt hat. THAMES.— 13th instant, that he maybe interviewed regard- ing a report that he was assaulted and robbed at Thame?, William Owen Jamieson. age fifty- eight, height 6 ft , cook, native of Ireland, medium build, dark complexion and eyes, dark hair turning grev ; supposed to be dressed in a grey suit. He was last heard of at Komata. Inquiry is at the instance of the Thames police. MANGAWEKA.— 22nd instant, that, he may be served with a summons for failing to provide for the adequate main- tenance of' his two children, Stephen Carkeek, age thirty- seven, height 5 ft. l^ in., labourer and ex- jockey, native of New Zealand, stout sturdy build, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, hazel eyes, short sandy moustache, scar on left cheek ; active appearance ; fond of drink, and is prohibited under the Licensing Acts ; a heavy smoker. He was last heard of at Christchurch. MANGAWEKA.— 22nd instant, that he may be served with a notice of fine and costs (£ 1 7s.) for a breach of his prohibi tion order, George Clark, age forty- two, height 5ft. 5in., tailor, native of Scotland, stout build, fair complexion and hair, sandy moustache; untidy appearance; addioted to drink. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, pages 173 and 274.) He was last heard of at Ohakune, but is supposed to have gone to Sydney. WANGANUI.— 23rd instant, that she may be compelled to contribute towards the maintenance of her child, an inmate of the Wellington Receiving Home, Maria Jane Hake, age about thirty- seven, height about 5ft. 4 in., thin build, very dark complexion, Gipsy appearance, thin face, has a decided stoop, furtive manner; shabbily dressed. She may be accompat ied by her mother- in- law, age about seventy, short stature, thin build, wrinkled face, begging disposition. Inquiry is at the instance of the Education Department. MARTON.— 18th instant, on warrant for obscene lan- guage, Samuel Adams, age thirty, height 5ft. 8in., labourer, native of Scotland, stout build, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, light- blue eyes, small fair moustache, short neck; fond of drink; dressed in blue- serge or green- striped tweed suit and cap. MARTON.— 18th instant, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Police- gaol for forty- eight hours in default of paying £ 1 fine and costs for drunkenness, Samuel Adams, age thirty, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of Scotland, stout build, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, light- blue eyes, small fair moustache, short neck ; fond of drink; dressed in blue- serge or green- striped tweed suit and cap. MOUNT Cook ( WELLINGTON). — 19th instant, on two warrants of commitment of one month each in Welling- ton Prison for sly- grog selling, James Henry Hope, age sixty- one, height 5 ft. 9 in., plumber, native of Ireland, dark complexion, dark- brown hair, hazel eyes, shoulders and chest covered with hair, ruptured on both sides, short- sighted, wears spectacles, clean- shaved except dark- brown moustache ; dressed in dark sac suit. GREYMOUTH.— 14th instant, on warrant of commitment to Greymouth Police - gaol for fourteen days in default of paying £ 2 3s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during the currency of his prohibition order, Alfred Eugene Clever, alias Donald McDonald, age thirty- six, height 5 ft. in., cook and bill- poster, native of New South Wales, medium build, dark complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, clean shaved; slovenlv and imbecile appear- ance; fond of drink; dressed in bandsmen's blue uniform. GREYMOUTH.— 14th instant, on warrant of commit- ment to Greymouth Police- gaol for one month in default of paying £ 4 I5s. fine and costs for theft, Alfred Eugene Clever, alias Donald McDonald, age thirty- six, height 5 ft. ljin., cook and bill- poster, native of New South Wales, medium build, dark complexion, brown bair, blue eyes, clean- shaved ; slovenly arid imbecile appearance; fond of drink ; dressed in bandsmen's blue uniform. CHRISTCHURCH.— 7th instant, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for three months in default of paying £ 10 15s. arrears of maintenance of his illegitimate child, Charles Smith, age thirty- three, height 5ft. 9in., fireman, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, dark- brown hair, blue eyes, sandy moustache, two women, hand and heart, TRUE LOVE, and tombstone on right arm, sailor, globe, and bracelet on left arm, scar on back of neck. CHRISTCHURCH.— 21st instant, on warrant for failing to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his wife, William James Green, alias Armitage, age thirty- six, height 5 ft. 6| in., labourer, native of England, medium build, florid complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, large nose. CHRISTCHURCH.— 25th ultimo, that she may be returned to Te Oranga Home, Margaret Nixon, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 2 in , domestic, native of New Zealand, stout build, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes; slovenly appearance; dressed in blue- serge costume and large dark- coloured hat trimmed with daises. ASHBURTON.— 17th instant, on warrant for theft of two sovereigns, a half- sovereign, and 5s. in silver, the money of Erskine Wilfred Cardale, clerk, John Sullivan, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 5 in., guesser, native of New Zea- land, fair complexion, auburn hair, grey eyes, large hooked nose, very narrow jaws ; dressed in blue suit and bard black bat. PORT CHALMERS.— 19th instant, on warrant for being absent without leave from the s. s. " Kaikoura," George Williams, age between thirty and thirty- five, height 5 ft. 4 in., trimmer, native of England, medium build, sallow complexion, fair hair and moustache ; dressed in pepper- and- salt- coloured coat and vest, dungaree trousers, and blue cap. A reward of £ 2 is offered and guaranteed for bis arrest. DUNEDIN.— 18th instant, for escaping from the Salvation Army Reformatory Institution, where she was undergoing detention for twelve months for soliciting prostitution, Lily Evans, alias Mary Smith, age thirty- two, height 5 ft. 4Jin., prostitute, native of England, sallow complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, small scar on upper lip; dressed in light- coloured blouse and green skirt. SPECIAL NOTICE. • Australian pickpocket George Walterson, alias Waterson. alias Phillip Gill, alias Bernard Gill, alias Snowey Gill, alias George Walters, alias Storey, alias Hill, whose portrait apoears in Queensland, Police Gazette, 1909, Photographs of Discharged Prisoners, page 2, and who is referred to in Queensland Police Gazette, 1908, page 467, and 1910, page 328, and in Neiv South Wales Police Gazette, 1910, pages 19 and 348, is at present in this Dominion, and may visit the different shows and race- meetings during the summer months. His criminal history is registered in the Commissioner's Office, Wellington. He was arrested at the New Zealand Cup meeting, Cbrist- church, for attempted th- ft from the person, but was dis- charged. ( See prisoners discharged from Lyttelton Prison, this issue.) ( C. INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND. * SYDNEY ( NEW SOUTH WALKS).— 14th ultimo, on warrant for deserting his wife and two children at Helensburgh, Samuel Hamilton, age twenty- five, height over 6 ft., coal- miner, medium build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, upper front teeth artificial, peculiar nails on two fingers, birth- mark under chin, erect gait; dressed in navy- blue suit, white- striped shirt, tweed cap, and cream- coloured guernsey. SYDNEY ( NEW SOUTH WALES).— A warrant has been issued by the Cnildren's Court Bench, Sydney, for the arrest of Arthur Kelly, charged with child- desertion. Descrip- tion : About twenty- eight years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, clean- shaved; usually wears grey sac suit and grey soft- felt hat; a pugilist. He is said to have come to this Dominion. Offender is identical with man of same name referred to in New South Wales Police Gazette, 1911, page 316.
